Could I get a fabric critique? I planned on making the pants for the uniform, but I bought a pair of light grey jegging things as a back up. I thought the color was pretty good, I'm just worried they're a hair too dark grey (I put a piece of white paper across the bottom for reference).

Oh god, most AOT cosplayer's makeup is shit. Huge eye makeup for crossplay? Really? And people don't really consider the setting of the story, even the girls wouldn't be wearing makeup. And while I actually think contouring is needed for cosplay, the lengths people go with it is appalling. Attached is a classic, but I've seen way too many aot cosplayers go that far and it doesn't look even remotely good.

Yeah, it 's even more annoying that in the anime version, they gave Annie and Mikasa obvious lipgloss and eyeliner/mascara. Where the hell would they get make up in those situations? I never noticed this until today. I always just figured the coloration was just a minor detail and didn't realize it was meant to be cosmetic until you pointed it out. It is absent in the other female characters. Makes me really angry at essentially all Christa/Petra/Hanji cosplays Ive seen.

Who else is working on their costume and just thinking this is fun and all but I'm just gonna be in a sea of half assery.

My love for the story so far is making me do it though. I tried to resist the pull. I have no reason to do it. I look like NO one on the show, there are too many of them already, and I have to make the entire thing cause I'm too tall and leggy to just get a Chinese one and call it a day. So I can't even scoot by just saying it's a throw away costume I didn't spend time on.

Honestly, my friend and I are just making ours' because of money; all of the materials to make the uniform cost a fraction of what it would be to buy a whole costume. I'm waffling between wanting to make everything clean and crisp and perfect (because if you're making it from scratch, why the fuck not), and giving up because no one is fucking going to care. Whatever, as long as I'm happy at the end of the day, hopefully it'll be worth it.

I third this. I just keep plugging along, because I figure it's the loyal fans like us that will still be around after all the trend-followers leave. Kind of like how (at least in my area) more of the shitty fans have left the Homestuck fandom, so it's finally starting to gain a better reputation. I got the pants and the shirt ready, and I have a guide for making the 3D maneuver gear. I'm not going for the best cosplay, but I'm going for something sensible and realistic given that I have only two and a half months. I'll hunt around for a jacket that's already made since I have zero sewing skills, but I'm curious as to how some of you guys make your boots / get your belts (3D harness, etc.)

Anyone got some pointers on these? Also this might be unrelated, but for some of you who choose to do colored contacts, where do you usually gets yours from? Any particular measurements needed before purchasing them? I never used contacts before so this is unknown territory for me.

or you can just buy ones that look similar enough.
I made my belts from brown vinyl with a leathery texture cut and sewn into inch-wide strips and then glued/sewn together to make the harness. Buying them might be the easier option though since you have to deal with everything getting twisted up by accident but making them means no saggy bits.
As for contacts, unless you have known eye problems you should be fine. They generally have the same measurements besides the size but talk to an optometrist if you're worried. Pinkyparadise and iszocirclelenses are both pretty reliable sites and Pinkyparadise definitely has the largest selection. There are also other smaller shops like Alice and Rabbit that might be cheaper/more reliable but I haven't tried them.

Thank you. I can sew simple seams together but it seems like making boots is a complete different animal. Since I'm running low on time and I have another project upcoming I'm thinking about purchasing the jacket+belt+boot set and making the maneuver gear myself.

Personal pet peeve: baggy pants. I suppose what irritates me about it so much is how easy it is to get leggings/skinny jeans these days, but people still wear baggy monstrosities that look terrible under the belts. Walmart sells basic skinny jeans for $7, they aren't expensive or hard to find if you're smart about it.

God damn. I'm cosplaying Petra, and I'm just trying to figure out what tailoring wise would be best so it looks less like, well, a shitty store bought coat. Aside from actually making sure it sits at my waist, what would you guys suggest? Adding a patch to the back instead of the print? I don't mind if the backs don't match and if I did that, I may be able to convince them to do it. Who knows. Haven't been watching SnK cosplayers closely at all, so I'm at a complete loss.

A patch would nice! Usually, the patch on the back of store bought jackets are printed, but I have heard that some have actual patches instead.
Another thing would be the choice of fabric for your jacket! I'm sure you've seen a lot of the manufactured jackets that are vinyl.
I'm not sure about these things on store bought jackets, but getting the proper colored buttons and top stitching could also make a difference!
And of course, making sure your jacket fits you well.

Hey guys, I sew leather jackets for a living and am wondering how the fandom feels about genuine leather uniforms. Anyone strictly against it?

the consensus on /cgl/ seems to be that when meat is so rare, they wouldn't waste so much leather on jackets for recruits (who are going to get eaten one week into training anyway).

I am against it, imo it just kind of ruins the costume. I feel like woven jackets end up fitting better on people too (probably cause they're not as stiff or hard to work with or whatever). a genuine leather jacket as a piece of fandom merch you can wear could be cool. Just not for cosplay.

I think leather or cotton just really depends on what you're going for. If you're in a big group it will be easier to get uniformity inexpensively with a polycotton. I think if you were doing a solo costume or small group you could rock leather jackets, but they should be real. I have yet to see fake leather SNK jackets that look good.

As for the actual jackets here are my thoughts

Yes they are flying at high speed, but they are also doing incredible feats of athleticism to fight and will be sweating a ton, more so in leather. The cloaks are there to protect from the wind instead. They would likely have a limited supply of leather because while there are cattle in the walls, meat is still a luxury. The limited leather supply would probably go just to boots and straps.

Leather boots have more practical use than leather jackets; they wouldnt be able to land on rooftops and trees and whatever other hazardous terrain and have their shoes last without tearing through if they were some kind of cloth. Also a pair of boots doesn't use as much leather a jacket, it seems like it would be more efficient to cover two pairs of feet than just one jacket for one person.

my 2 cents though. I'm sure a well-made leather jacket, in a matte finish, would look bitching but I wouldn't recommend that cosplay groups go with this. And certainly not pleather, yuck.

I could definitely do the bandages, but I still like the Garrison patches better. The Garrison soldiers got fucked-up, too, anyway.
The other thing that draws me to the Garrison patch is that when I was at Sakura-Con a couple weeks ago, there were a metric shit-ton of Scouts and not a single MP or Garrison, at least not that I saw.
