This time I've made a beginner's guide on the basic makeup routine. It's quite massive, but I tried to be as descriptive as possible [sorry for picture size!]. If I don't wear foundation* do I need a primer or concealer? I have an eyelid primer (I used to use the Urban Decay one but I had a weird reaction to it, so I'm trying the Kat Von D one since it didn't seem to cause any issues when trying it in Sephora). I don't usually wear blush, just eye makeup and lipgloss usually.

*I don't think my skin is perfect, but on several trips to Sephora when I asked about foundation, I was told I didn't need it. I have sensitive skin so I figured it was one less thing to possibly have a reaction to.

Also not sure if BB cream is something I should try, or if that's too similar to foundation.

BB Cream is typically lighter in coverage than foundation (more similar to tinted moisturizer but with added benefits like spf, whitening, and anti-aging ingredients)

>> No.7901358

List your worth mentioning HG products please. If it's a foundation it would be helpful to include your skin type and the finish of the foundation. Been wanting to check out some new stuff. Thanks!

If you're not going to be wearing any all over face makeup then a primer isn't necessary. Concealer - well you do have anything you want to cover?

As >>7901356 mentioned bb cream is a good alternative but if you want even lighter coverage than you could try a cc cream. It color matches to your skin to even it out and can give you a healthy matte or dewy finish depending on which type you get.

>>7901351
>If I don't wear foundation* do I need a primer or concealer?
No. A primer is only needed when you're going to apply full coverage makeup on your face.

Some people don't find the need in a primer at all, even when they wear full makeup. Same applies for concealer when it comes to whether or not you should use it in your routine.

As for concealer, yes, you can use it without wearing foundation. However, I don't recommend using it if you have large areas to correct, otherwise your face may look patchy. Just for small imperfections it should be fine.

>Also not sure if BB cream is something I should try, or if that's too similar to foundation.
BB creams are lighter in texture than foundations. They also tend to offer less coverage but they have a more natural finish to them. They're also different in the sense they double as moisturizers. However, take into consideration that even though they're moisturizers, they're still makeup, so don't treat them as your only moisturizer in case you decide to give it a try.

I have dark under eye circles (not sure if genetics, lack of sleep, or both) that might be worth trying to conceal. Maybe I will try BB or CC cream first and see how I feel about them before I try messing with concealer though. I have a hard to match skintone so I might be falling down one rabbit hole with the BB/CC cream let alone concealer. Thanks!

1 of 2 OP, here.

>Mizon's Snail Repair BB Cream- Good for girls with very fair skin with COOL undertones, otherwise you may end up looking grey. I have combination oily skin, but this has not caused a break out. May vary for other girls. Covers sebaceous filaments on nose nicely. I do not use conventional foundations as they sink into my pores (rendering them more noticeable), feel heavy, and cause my face to itch after a few hours.

>Hourglass Femme Rouge Velvet Creme Lipstick- Color choice is 'Icon', best suited for those will COOL undertones, not warm. Wonderful color, does not dry lips out, rivals my Chanel lipsticks.

>Too Faced LashGASM Mascara- Effect is similar to Clinique's 'Lash Doubling Mascara', only with a better brush and bigger tube. I have a preference for the plastic, "prickly" type brushes as "hair" type ones seem to create clump, in my experience.

>Too Faced's Primed and Poreless Pure Primer- White tube, for sensitive/oily skin types. Has never let my makeup falter and skin feels soft even after makeup removal. No irritation, no breakouts.

>Chanel's Poudre Universelle Compacte- Shade is 20 'Clair'. Does not cake or causing itching and is good for shine care and pore coverage.

>Lancome's Cils Booster XL- Eyelash primer to keep mascara from flaking off and also helps to create a lovely bit of volume. I have thick eyelashes, so I go easy on this when using it to avoid looking like a drag queen with huge falsies.

Cinema Secrets Foundation/Concealer palettes.
I'm pretty pale but I have distinctly olive skin that makes finding a good foundation match damn near impossible. I also have hormonal acne, combination skin, and lots of dark spots from long-gone cystic acne.
Found Cinema Secrets when I was building my kit for theatrical makeup and I haven't bought another foundation or concealer since.
It's a cream so it's full coverage, but you can mix it with moisturiser and apply with a damp beauty blender sponge for lighter coverage. I use it as a concealer as well and it covers everything. I usually set with loose translucent silica powder (MUFE) and a setting spray (NYX) and my foundation lasts through the entire day, even in humidity and heat.
Shade range is amazing. I like the smaller palettes for personal use because you can blend your own shade and/or use the other colors for contouring. The price is beyond decent, I normally get mine for about $16 a palette online.

>>7901358
Sure thing!

My skin type is cool with neutral undertones. I'm also dry skin combo [oily in my t-zone]. Very pale sensitive skin, too.

I have tried three different foundations so far:
>Revlon's Photoready, I don't remember the shade
>Guerlain's Parure de Lumiere in 02 Beige Clair
>Chanel's Mat Lumiere in 30 Cendre [current one]

The first one was good for coverage. I really didn't need a lot, but even though I'd use as little as possible, I'd have the same caked up finish. I tried with sponges, with brushes and with my hands. Nothing changed. It didn't break me out, which is good.

As for Guerlain, the foundation stays in place. It feels light on the skin, it didn't break me out at all, the scent is nice, and overall it's a great foundation with good coverage, although it could be better. It gives a natural finish.

In the case of Chanel, it's a matte foundation. It's a foundation for oily skin [it has never dried me out despite having dry skin]. It gives much better coverage than Guerlain [it's also a little more dense], although the scent could be better. The finish is silky and matte.
The only problem I have with it is that it's not my shade [the woman at the counter gave me the wrong shade], but I can still manage if I just use a little amount of it.

I think that Guerlain has been the best foundation so far, although if I actually the Chanel one in the right shade, it'd wreck Guerlain completely.
I'm planning to buy Hourglass during the holidays, though. I think the shade's Porcelain, can't remember.

As for my holy grail products:
>Chanel's pressed powder in 20 Clair
>Chanel's Rouge Allure lipstick in 99 Pirate
>Lancome's Rouge in Love in Rouge Valentine [I think]
>The Body Shop's liquid eyeliner in black
>M.A.C.'s eyeshadow in Charcoal Brown [I use it for my brows because I hate pencils. Great finish, doesn't smudge. Holds on for forever]
>M.A.C.'s lip liner in Nightmoth [Stays for fucking ever too]
>The Body Shop's Vitamin E lip balm.
cont.

Hey seagulls, do you have any recommendations for a beginner? I'll be visiting Hong Kong and the US in a couple months time, so I'll be hitting up SaSa and Sephora since everything in Australia is so god damn expensive. I know for sure I'll be stocking up for BB cream and mostly skincare stuff in Hong Kong and probably mostly cosmetics in the US. I've done a bit of research, and it'll be great if I got a second opinion.
I'm mostly looking for basic, affordable products since I'm not too involved in makeup atm (low - average/mid price range)

>BB cream
O'slee Rosehip BB Cream HD Flawless, or maybe Innisfree Air Skin Fit BB cream. Open to other suggestions so long that they are available at SaSa or in the states.

>Gel liner/smudge pot
Maybelline? Revlon? I'm not sure about this one. I would go for liquid liners, but I don't trust myself with pointy things around my eyes. Plus, my lids are hooded and I'm wary of the dragging it might create.

>Eyeshadow Palette
Mostly looking for a versatile neutral palette, seeing as i don't have many opportunities to dress up. I've read good things about UD Naked Basics and Lora, but Coastal Scents - Revealed seems like a pretty viable/affordable option if I can get a hold of it in Aus.
The limited edition Sephora Collection VIP Pass Eyeshadow Palette or lim. ed. UD Pulp Fiction Palette seem very tempting at <$20. I'm open to other suggestions though!

>Brush set
Probably Eco-tool's starter set.

>Primer?
Monistat Anti-chafing Gel???

>Setting Spray?
NYX was mentioned earlier, so probably that. Not quite sure if I'd need this though, depending on the primer/bb cream i get.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

For gel liner I recommend M.A.C. if you can find it. It's really good in texture and stays on for long periods of time.

As for eyeshadow palettes, I honestly think the Naked palette would be the best option. Coastal Scents in my opinion are too concentrated, but then again I prefer subtle makeup that isn't so intense.
The Body Shop's cube palette is also a good option, although you may find it too shimmery.
I've tried it personally, and it's a good product. It's worth the price.

For primer, go for Urban Decay or Too Faced.

I don't wear makeup every single day, but nor do I limit myself to holidays or "special events". There are some rare days where I put makeup on even if I'm staying home just because I enjoy the aesthetic, but I honestly spend more money on skin care to correct problems rather than covering them up. Prior to my BB cream, it was just (after face care routine) primers, powder, brow pencil, mascara, eye shadow, lipstick. I only wear balms to bed for overnight care. I'm unable to use foundation for reasons stated in >>7901418 and because they're always too dark. Always. I don't contour because it's a personal peeve of mine to look drastically different after makeup is washed off, which I feel that contouring does after seeing so many "Before & After" shots. If that's what some people like, I don't care and I'm not going to throw shade at them, but for my own face I would prefer to not do it. Just a matter of personal taste.

I'm honestly unable to say exactly how long it takes, but it certainly isn't more than probably 15 to 20 minutes. I have never timed myself and I often get up two hours before I need to leave so I can have tea, take my vitamins, make a smoothie, and do some exercises before heading out.

I'm gonna get the Real Techniques Sponge from Ulta. I'm still not entirely sure if MUFE HD is for me. At the end of the day it looked fantastic but those first few hours it still looks like I am wearing a mask. And I thought I had oily skin too, but I had issues with the foundation just looking way too dry. If I can't get it to work I'm gonna call it quits, just a shame since I FINALLY found a matching shade! Maybe the finish is too matte? I'd rather mattify a too-dewy foundation with setting powder than try to add a more moist look to a too-matte foundation. The next possible candidates:

>> No.7901797

I'm sure some are harder to blend than others...but they tend to apply just like any other compact foundation...just dampen the sponge a little bit and blend it around. They start off as a cream, so it isn't too bad. It dries to a powder. I'm using a discontinued Urban Decay one at the moment (Surreal Skin, in the color Illusion) that I really love & it's super easy to blend and stays on well for more oily skin combined with heat/humidity, IMO. I use mineral veil over it.
Now as for completely powder foundations, I don't like the way those look on other people so I haven't really bothered to use them myself...so I can't really comment on how hard those are to use.

For your lips, tinted balm is good. You could try Fresh, Burt's Bees, Nivea, Vaseline's Rosy Lips, or Dior. Mascara may be too heavy for you, but you can overcome that with time. As for eye shadow? I'm overly sensitive to gritty, sticky, and heavy textures, and I've tried smashbox's primer before and it's too gritty, but I'll definitely give the others a try.

The problem with eyeshadow is also the "gritty" texture of the powder. I like the texture of UD's but the only colors I've seen are tacky as hell. It's that soft, powdery feel that I'm looking for, like the finish that Mizon's BB cream has. That product is now my HG because it's pale enough and has a texture I can tolerate well.

Mizon's Snail Repair is actually my BB cream. For eye shadows, you could try Clinique or The Body Shop's cube palette. I own both and they never feel heavy. Plus, Clinique is also very big on making skin care conscious cosmetics, so I do trust a lot of their things. Hourglass and Bare Minerals also make primers that aren't heavy.

How2 remove waterproof makeup without blinding yourself?
I don't like the look/feel of mascara very much, but I bought a bottle of Heroine Make Long and curl for days when false lashes aren't ideal. But god damn I used it 2 days ago and I still get racoon eyes after I shower. I have an eye makeup remover, but I go through several cotton circles and still have residue.
I like the effect way better than the shitty maybelline ones I used in 7th grade but I might go back to that. I can't really justify buying nice mascara to wear 5 times a year.

I used to wear really thick glasses so I went full panda on my eyes and it didn't really showed as such.

There's a L'Oreal makeup remover for sensitive eyes and it does work wonders. If not, this >>7903872
I have had the same problem as you, so the only thing I found would work on me was

>Removing eye makeup with Camomile's makeup remover from tbs/that L'Oreal one [the latter doesn't burn but the former does, a little. I still find tbs more effective]
>Proceed to take off my face makeup with the Camomile Sumptous Butter, also rubbing my eyes with it
>Cleanse with water and then use my facial wash
>I still get some residue by this point so I just pic a cotton pad before drying my face, and remove the remnants, using the water as remover.

It is kind of a long process, but it's the only thing that worked for me.
That or you could go ballistic and rub your eyes for like 2 minutes with your makeup remover and then wash them out.

(Sorry for blurry shit, iPhones blow.) I may pick up Pure Poison by Dior, because after smelling it recently it seems so much more tolerable.

Prior to these, I was a fan of The Body Shop's Sun Glow, but they discontinued it along with the old version of their jasmine perfume I was also fond of. Their newer version of it just doesn't smell the same. Their rose perfumes are good, but I was hoping for something with stronger rose content.

I usually prefer powdery/sweet scents, so rosy doesn't really come to mind except for two fragrances.

The first one is the rose perfume The Body Shop makes, which is really good in my opinion. I have the Atlas Rose perfume and I don't know if they have changed the name [they do that often], but basically it's the same formula, as far as I know.

The second one is Miracle by Lancome. That one is amazing, and would buy again. They had like different versions of it, but I owned the first one and it's still available, so that's good.

Both have really great longevity, the scent is strong and the notes are basically rose and more rose.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm going to try to make it out to sephora and MAC this weekend to check out a few of the suggested products. I'm also going to give those liquid to powder lipsticks a try as the chubby sticks were too thick and felt like they never dried. I really like Benefit's posie tint and high beam quite a bit as a tip for other anons who have similar issues. Another thing I might retry are Urban decay eyeshadows, the texture of them is good but I've only ever seen that horrible neon graffiti pallette. For cream eyeshadows, they're thick, but I've only ever used the shit drugstore brands so I'll check out some higher end stuff.

Also Sugarpill makes good lashes if you're into dramatic stuff.

Are there any eye lash glues for sensitive eyes? I've tried so many brands and glue types and they all make my eyes water like something awful. At first I thought I wasn't letting the glue tack and set enough before applying, and the fumes were bothering me. However, even after the glue dries a bit it still bothers my eyes, and it makes my eyes water so badly it pretty much is an instant makeup ruiner.

Full strip is easier for first time. Get a plastic lash holder rather than using fingers to put them on.

Okay, crazy anon here. I'm trying to compile a list of what I'm using already and what I need so I'll be ready to test things out in the store when I go out this weekend.

For my face, I need to try out primers from Too faced, the body shop, mac, and clinique. (I think the Revlon one is a Smashbox dupe that was irritating but I'll check it out.)
I already have a bb cream so I don't really need foundation
Benefit's posie tint is my blush and highbeam is my highlighter so I need to find a bronzer that works.
Eyeshadow is something I need to find so I'm going to check out Urban Decay's makeup palette along with a couple other brands

Pen eyeliners work great, so I was planning on trying out that K-palette 24 hour tattoo stuff to see if it has good stay power. Stila's felt good, but the color fell flat imo. Waterproof mascara isn't a huge issue, the falsies drugstore stuff works well as long as I replace the tubes as directed.
For lips I'm going to try out the liquid to powder stuff and check out the other lip tints.

Any more suggestions or things I left out? Also, for setting spray, has anyone tried out the Skindinavia setting sprays? They have the best reviews online, but I'm wondering what they feel like. If the ELF one worked worth a damn, it would be perfect.

1] It really depends on preference. If you feel comfortable with applying it with your fingers, it's fine.

Hey, what does everyone do to beautify their bodies?

I've been considering switching to waxing as opposing to shaving, but I'm still unsure. Anyone have advice on how to make eyeshadow look good for people with hooded eyes? I've been trying to teach myself how to do makeup for cosplay and I've gotten half-decent at everything except general eye stuff (liquid eyeliner, eyeshadow). It's not a huge deal but it would be nice to be a little less clueless. I just can't make it look decent.

Because, unfortunately, a lot of girls are not aware of Lime Crime's sordid history. They just see the lipstick swatches on the website, don't realize that they're HEAVILY photoshopped, and order them. The thing that I've noticed with LC is that their newbies tend to be roped in by their Velvetines, but as we've discussed in the previous two threads, there are about six or seven better alternatives to theirs that are bigger and won't dry your lips to the point of flaking. And, you won't be giving your hard earned money to a cunt who kills her cat, so there's always that.

As for Indie brands, I'd avoid Impulse Cosmetics because they do the same shit as LC with picture stealing and shopping the hell out of their product swatches online. You could try Pla Beauty, ForStrangeWomen, OrangeThyme; Borne Cosmetics' Foundation tends to be compared to Revlon's often and users speak to it being much better. Oh, and for those looking for super pigmented shadows a la Sugarpill yet cheaper? Pic related are swatches of 8 Bit Cosmetics. There's more colors than just those. They also have the longevity that Sugarpill's eye shadows do. As always, primers are recommended to help increase that lovely staying power.

I've been really interested in indie cosmetics lately and have been trying as many as I can.

My favorite so far is Glamour Doll Eyes; they have really pretty pigments and are great quality. The turn around time (TAT) is also super quick; if it's not a special release, my orders get shipped usually within 2-3 days, if not sooner. I also really love how you get a free full sized pigment with any $10+ order and the color changes monthly.

I also liked Shiro Cosmetics. They have nerd/pop culture themed items and, like GDE, are also really high quality. They have a great website, too.

Definitely going to look in to some of the brands you named!

Hi anon, not sure if you're still here or interested in making that foundation work for you, but I've been using MUFE HD for a few years. I use a flat foundation brush first to apply it and a "HD" stipple brush to blend it out. Stipple brushes are better for blending than application in my experience. Flat brushes lay it down well, and stipple brushes help get rid of any lines or uneven areas.

I think the first one is more bronze, warm-toned neutrals, and the second is more true neutrals that would look good on anyone. The third is very pink or "rosey" golds and browns, not a lot of proper neutrals in there.

>>7905627
The Naked Basics palettes with only matte shades are really nice. 4/6 shades are fairly light colours, and the matte finish gives a nice understated look that you can blend to be really subtle. I think Naked 2 and Naked Basics 2 would suit you with your cool undertones.

re: setting spray - Urban Decay's sprays are Skindinavia sprays so go for that. I use the all-nighter one for long makeup days. For pen liners, I've used Stila, NARS and Eyeko and liked all of them.

>>7905960
Bronzers aren't really necessary but I sometimes use a bit if I feel like I need a bit more colour in my face. If you're pale, go easy on it, especially in winter. In summer it's nice to add a bit of a "healthy glow" or whatever.

NARS: Orgasm, Super Orgasm, Deep Throat, Sex Appeal, Sin, Seduction etc.; Illamasqua: Thrust, Beg, Hussy, Excite, Tweak, Allure, Lover, Tremble, etc.

I just wanted to drop a quick review: I recently bought some L'Oreal BB Skin Beautifier Redness Reducing cream.

I was hesitant because it is "self-adjusting" and I'd never tried one of those before, was it going to be some hokey thing and a waste of money?? I decided to jump and buy it because I have a rosacea, like many people, and have been questing for a product that actually neutralizes the red and doesn't cost me $50.

I have been using it for a couple of days and with the cream applied to my cheeks and chin + setting powder all over to even everything up, and day 1 it lasted my most of about 8hrs before it just started to fade. Day 2, with the addition of setting spray, everything stayed perfect until I wanted to wash my face after work [approx. wear time, 10 hours]. It would've lasted longer but as I teach at a middle school, I tend to want to detox immediately when I get home by washing my face, changing clothes, etc. Kids and schools can be so gross. Regardless:

Pros:
+ Does actually self adjust and neutralize red skin in a believable way [but see 2nd con]
+ The cream did not irritate my sensitive, dry skin.
+ Seems to last a while, which is good

Cons [really minor]:
- Formula is a lot more liquidy than expected and comes out of the tube quickly
- On me, it only looks natural on red areas. Cannot apply to entire face as indicated in the instructions. It looks too Jersey Shore orange on areas of my face that weren't red.

Overall: I think it generally does what I want it to and while I cannot use it all over my face, it's not a dealbreaker. I'm sure other people can wear it that way and love it. I don't think it would work quite as well on someone who is super fair-skinned since I've got light skin with gold undertones and had the issue with it looking orange on areas that weren't red... if you're much lighter than me, you might just completely look like you face planted hard into the bronzer.
