I would say no besides the ever-increasing amount of people attending (last year and the year before the AA has been moved into a room similar to the dealer's room due to things getting crowded). In 2013 they also started implementing bag checks at the doors, the one where the hynes empties into the pru is literally the worst. They needed to do it I think as per the rules of like, the state's convention association or w/e stemming from the boston marathon bombing I guess? It's just a pain in the ass if you have a bag and you have to wait in the line.
Still lots of younger kids/teens but I wouldn't say they've taken over just yet.

WATERPROOF, WARM SHOES. Hell, even if there isn't a ton of snow still on the ground, at this rate there's still going to be a metric fuck tonne of slush. Do NOT go tromping around the city in your sneakers, you need boots (winter boots are better but cosplay boots are still better than sneakers)

If you're going any kind of distance, make sure you have a hat and gloves.

Alternatively, just stay in the pru and food court it all weekend. This winter's been brutal by New England standards, if you're coming from a warm climate it'll be extra hard.

Informal Dance has been canceled indefinitely.

>Anime Boston's Informal Dance has not been held since the 2012 convention, where a series of incidents occurred during the dance. We attempted to secure an off-site location for the Informal Dance in 2013, but encountered issues with city permits and planning and had to cancel it last minute.

>We have thoroughly investigated all avenues open to us in order to host an informal dance again. Unfortunately we have found that the options presented to us do not meet our needs, either in terms of safety for our attendees and staff, proximity to the Hynes Convention Center, budgetary allowance, or in meeting city licensing requirements.

>Our criteria for hosting the informal dance is unlikely to become any easier to meet in the future. As our attendees population increases, it will result in needing a higher capacity venue, bigger safety concerns, more staff, and a larger Boston police detail.

>The increased cost to do all of that would result in shifting money from other facets of the convention to the informal dance. It would result in a lower quality Anime Boston experience overall, in favor of one single event.

>The leadership of Anime Boston is committed to bringing you the best show we possibly can. After trying to make that include an informal dance again for the past few years, we have been unable to reconcile the two. Ultimately this means that the informal dance will be suspended indefinitely.

>We thank you for your understanding of the situation. We do hope that you will join us at Anime Boston 2015 and beyond to experience all the other wonderful events here.

Amazing cosplays will stick right out of the crowd of course. I'm from NYC and ab was my first out of state con too. Taking a cab is fine since its not that far from the station. Your other options are taking the train and making a transfer somewhere along the way to the mall where the con takes place.

The first time I went there I actually walked to get to the con center since it was a nice day. I ate at a cafe, passed through Chinatown, went around the park, and I check out the library for a bit before heading to Prereg.

>> No.8170844

>>8170402
If you want to, but a cab will be expensive. I would recommend getting on the red line, which is right at south station. If you want detailed instructions: You'll want to get on an inbound train going towards/with the end stop being "Alewife" (it'll say this on the train, writing this here because I know sometimes this confuses people but if you're from NYC you should be used to subways). When you get on, the next 2 stops will be Downtown Crossing and then Park Street. Get off at Park street, because here you will be able to switch over to the green line - just follow the signs. At Park st, there are 4 different green line trains, pay attention to the signs on the trains or on the platform: there's B, C, D, and E. You can get on any one of these, really. (Again, make sure you're going in the right direction, though. Take inbound. Outbound will say Lechmere and you don't want that unless you're going back to Park st to get back to South station) If you get on B C or D, get off at the Hynes stop. You will do a bit of walking but it's like 2-3 minutes and not a hassle at all - this will bring you to the convention center entrance. If you get on the E train, get off at Prudential, and this will spit you out at the Prudential Center mall, which is connected to the Hynes. This will require you to walk through the mall to get to the convention center. I'm not sure if Hynes or Pru stop is easier than the other, I personally have always gotten off at Hynes because I always take the E line in. I suppose it depends on if you're trying to get to a hotel that's on the other side of the Hynes, near or in copley.

Ah I hope none of this was confusing and I hope I didn't write anything wrong, other anons feel free to correct me please. I just know that sometimes people get really confused on the t so I thought maybe I would help out. If worse comes to worse, you can just find your way by asking someone or following all the costumed people of course.

Not sure when you're getting here, but I should mention that registration/badge pick-up is in the Sheraton, which is also connected to the pru. If you go to the Hynes by going through the pru, the entrance to the sheraton is right by the entrance to the Hynes that is inside of the mall, again just look to see where people are going. If you end up getting off the t via the Hynes stop, you'll need to walk around to get to the Sheraton (people will show you how to get there just ask if you don't know)

AB is nice in that the whole set-up is really convenient in terms of hotel locations, it being connected to the mall, public transport being easily close by/accessible, etc.

Last year I don't ever remember it being too terrible, but the biggest place that gets clogged up with traffic is in on the first floor, the main hall that goes to the dealer room and also the entrance into the pru. Nothing is ever so bad that you can't move, it's just in that main hallway where things get a bit crowded.

I remember the last year the AA was in that smaller dark room and attendance went up so much, there were so many people in the AA often and I remember getting so irritated and how it was hard to move sometimes in there. So glad that they moved the AA to a bigger, dealer's room type place.

Anyways, I do wonder what traffic/space will be like this year though now that there's an attendance cap. Do you guys think they will stay at the Hynes and keep doing an attendance cap or will there be some point ever in the future where they will move locations to the BCEC? I know the amount of people probably won't get that high in the near future, so how long do you think it would take for AB to reach that amount of attendees, or will it ever?

This - besides areas that are going to have lots of traffic no matter what, the Hynes has stayed pretty uncrowded.
And yeah, I'm so super glad they finally moved the AA to the bigger hall! It was crazy how tiny the old room was, especially given how many artists there were. They'd been using that room for it probably since the start, and it was definitely time for a change.
Mm, I don't know if AB will ever get so big that they'd have to go to the BCEC, or at least, I kind of hope that doesn't happen. I love AB and I'm so happy that it's grown so much in the past few years, but the Hynes is a seriously ideal spot to hold a convention, especially one where so many people under 18 attend. The Pru is right there, plus there's a supermarket three seconds away, so it's really convenient. Unless things get really dire with attendance, I hope they don't move.

Since it seems that therw are a few out-of-staters coming to the AB for the first time, there are a few things you should know.

-subways do not 24 hours a day. This past year they introduced a new T schedule that has extended hours on the weekend, but the last train is usually around 2am. Plan accordingly.

-subways are always better than taxis. Most of Boston's streets were laid out centuries ago, and were not meant to be driven on. T is slow and sucks but is still the better option.

-there is pretty much no nightlife past 2am. Don't expect to be at the con till 1 and go bar hopping afterwards. Nothing will be open.

-don't ask the locals to say "park the cah in hahvahd yahd" or any other stereotypical Bostonian phrase. They WILL beat the shit out of you if you do

I'll add to this excellent post!

- There is some excellent and cheap dining a T ride away in the Davis-Porter-Harvard area of the Red Line. The restaurants in the area around the con proper can be quite pricey! I'm sure that Berklee/Emerson/Northeastern students have a better idea of where to eat cheap in the area, but I've had the best luck dining out in the places I've mentioned.

- If you're into Asian beauty care, there is a store in Chinatown, whose name I don't remember, but which is right in between the Eldo Cake House and the Sasa Beauty Salon. It is expensive as hell ($5.00 sheet masks; Banila Co Clean It Zero, which retails at $20.00 online, is a whopping $40 here) but there are testers of a lot of products out for you to try, which can be really useful! It's also near some excellent Chinese bakeries.

- The city is way more walkable than you think it is if you're wearing good shoes. Particularly on the green line, I would say that if something's within two T-stops you definitely don't need to ride there. (This breaks down a little the farther you get away from the city center.)

Hi everybody~ So, I know it's obviously too late this year, but me and a few friends have been playing with the idea of a 'popup maid cafe' since we're not allowed to have one in the sheraton or hynes because of ridiculous regulations.

I work in restaurants myself and so I know the inner workings of a popup restaurant and can apply them to the maid cafe. I will be making flyers and handing them out at AB to get reservation interest for next year, as well as looking for maids. I would like some seagulls to have first dibs on the maid possibility or any other position working in the cafe.

If anyone's interested you can respond ITT with your email and I'll get an email sent out to you.

Different anon but a 45 minute walk is seriously not a hop skip and a jump away, especially since locals are not going to want to dick around in the tourist part of town on Easter. Thanks for the "warning" but it's kind of worthless, especially when attached to an "omg aggressive locals!" sticker.

>> No.8205351

>>8205334
Food court? Nono. It would be in a building near the hynes, obviously not AB affiliated but during the con, probably the sunday of the con(since not much is going on at that time) I will be putting up polls for the preferred day and time.

I can explain the basics of a 'popup restaurant' too.
Basically a chef and staff rent out a building for one evening or so, rent out tables etc(if the building doesn't have anything like that) and set it up like a restaurant, in our case, a maid cafe, they gather a staff that usually gets part of the profit, in our case I would be providing a bit of compensation but it will be mostly volunteer like a regular maid cafe. We make a menu, decide on uniforms(I will compensate those) and then put the info up out to the public and take reservations up front. A lot of the capital can also be started via something like gofundme. Hope that makes sense.

>> No.8205356

>>8205340
The locals aren't even aggressive to begin with...I don't know what everyone is on about. Maybe when they're drunk, sure, but that's just some of them, saying all irish/italians in boston are going to be aggressive drunks is pretty shitty. This is coming from a boston native too.

>> No.8205378

Staffer here, you may want to try pitching your idea to programming anyway; if you're a professional, you may find that they're interested in at least promoting you the same way Rise isn't associated with the con but still gets a shoutout as a paid event attendees can participate in. The food restrictions are ones enforced by the hynes/sheraton, not staff. If you can make your cafe match the current year's theme, that's even better.

>> No.8205379

>>8205340
When I'm talking about walking distance, you also have to take into account the T. You can easily make it from North End to Prudential in about 15 minutes if the T isn't busy. Doesn't matter if most locals aren't agressive, it only takes one asshole to start a fight.

If you've worked in a restaurant then you should have the common sense to realize no restaurant in the back bay area is going to give up its kitchen for a pop-up on weekend when they could be doing a couple hundred covers and bringing in tens of thousands of dollars.

Even if magically you got this to work, there is no way on god's green earth the weebs of the city and the attendees that you can get to leave the pru area are going to make up that kind of money. Profit? You should be looking into how to ask for a second mortgage.

Well known bakery? You mean Panera? How anyone can have claimed to work in the service industry for so long and still have an utter lack of reality is beyond me.

and you people are effing delusional if you think there is somehow cheap space for rent, restaurant or otherwise in the area around the Pru. Do you even have any idea how much rent goes per sq. foot in the city? Or ever done an actual study to determine market interest for a maid cafe? People posting on cgl does not constitute an accurate accounting of how many people will come.

Shit-tons of people work in the service industry and I've certainly done my fair share as FOH, BOH and everything in between. But that doesn't suddenly make things easy peasy nor does it make you an expert.

It's not even, though. All it does is show that you a) go on 4chan and b) are trying to use a 4chan function on another site unironically, making you look like an idiot

they didn't, but they're used for greentext on 4chan, and the way he situated his on that post is exactly the same as the way they're often used for jokes on this website

Honestly, you aren't going to find a hotel in Boston this close to Anime Boston. Try looking around the various commuter rail stations. I recommend Anderson/Woburn, theres a Marriot within walking distance, and commuter rail + T to Hynes will set you back about $20 per person each day

There's space at the Marriott copley place according to orbitz for under $250. I'm surprised tbh.
