Considering all the assumptions you're making, I'm going to go ahead and say you've never actually met me. I have no clue how operations works at the con but facebook threads move fast, get buried fast and often have a bunch of people whining about stupid shit.

I suggest putting valid complaints in the forum, because that's not going to get buried by the traffic on the facebook page. It might be easier to reference when they have their meetings and might be more visible to the departments that handle those issues

Just because a suggestion is made, doesn't mean it's feasible. People complain about the rave fence, but obvious that fence has been put in place because of some need for restrictions, possibly from something that happened. They can't just ditch the fence or they wouldn't have shelled out to rent it in the first place. People say more guests or better guests, but what constitutes more or better? If you open it up to people to suggest stuff you're going to get a youtube con. With the volunteers, they can't make more volunteers appear out of thin air and not all volunteers are able to attend their training sessions -- so how do you resolve that?

Perhaps they couldn't afford the guests, or get them to commit to the date, or get in contact with them. If the guests are japanese, they might have issues getting translators.

As I said, I have no idea how AN handles things, but I work at a place that hosts big events and see the craziness and planning behind the scenes. What looks like a simple solution, isn't always simple.

It could be that they do suck at taking feedback though. In the end it's their con and they can choose to make it whatever they want it to be.

But as one of the biggest cons in NA, there are certain expectations people have. It's not just the guests - some areas are quite disorganized. I signed up to be a volunteer this year and when I sent an email, I didn't get a reply. Other people didn't either. And last year, they announced a volunteer meeting with just a few day's notice (I do applaud them for giving more than a week's notice this year). There were other issues too last year, like the Nominoichi line-up.
You are right, however. It is their con and they can decide what to do with it. Whether we want to continue supporting them is our decision.

I know you are trying to help, but AN shoudlnt have those issues. If smaller cons both in Canada and smaller ones in the US can get better guests, then the biggest con in the country should be able to. They dont have issues with getting translators. They can afford the guests because they have a shit ton of money with selling out every year.

The issue isnt that guests are hard to book, it is that AN staff gives no fucks. They wont put in the work to try new things because they are happy with it atm instead of trying to continue to grow. Despite all the signs that they need to grow because it has been 20 years since most of their guests have been relevant. They stick to substandard staffing because they dont want to change.

Here's the deal;
AN is volunteer run. It has hundreds of "staff". To get staff you need to volunteer and then they put you on staff. So your "issues" aren't encompassing all of AN, but different departments. That's why some events, activities or areas of AN are better than other and why some could use some work. Some department coast and dont do much, others are fucked over by other departments who don't help and then there's a few really great people.

Exactly. As a recent example, look at Sakura-con. They have a great line-up, appealing to many different audiences. For English voice actors, they had Vic, Jonny, Bryce. For Japanese, they had Yoshitsugu Matsuoka and Kana Ueda. They also had Kanako Itou come in, as well as other guest from the industry. Sakura-con is volunteer-run and the amount of attendees is lower than AN.
I don't know what the background work is like for these things, but from what I can see, AN staff doesn't give a fuck about what the attendees want. And as the biggest con in Canada, they really should be stepping up their game.

So your beef is with the guest they bring which means you have a beef with guest relations. The more important duties like guest relations, scheduling ect are done by veteran AN staff. They've been there for years and they probably are just going with the flow at this point.
If you want this to change get into the con and start making changes. That's how they finally got fashion guest at the con.
AN does well with or without good guest so unless someone makes that change or something changes in attendance, I doubt this will ever change. This criticism comes year after year.

AN only got a fashion guest after the girls went to other cons first and got them to do it and proved to AN it was doable. This was something that AN refused to do for years and years, even when the con in Vancouver has had AP over a few times now and is fine. Then Fan expo brought misako over first and AN followed with a subjectively smaller brand Jetj. Otakuthon brought Btssb over first, and AN followed. Changes happened once people started implying they would go elsewhere and put their effort into cons who were willing to help out and they buckled, and you shouldn't have to create that kind of situation to get a con to want to make a con better. While Fan expo is a shitty con that wants money, it also is a con that is easier to work with to get guests because they are willing to let groups prove the interest. This is why groups like the steam punk people, and larpers are more likely to go to that con, despite the higher cost they get more out of the con itself.

Also it isnt like other parts are any better, AN has a history of being shitty at scheduling and treating their guests like shit. Veteran AN staff are a huge part of the issue, it is those higher up people who are the least likely to want to change because they have the power yet are out of touch with the con goers.

>> No.8260995

AN does not *HAVE TO get good Japanese guests. AN executives realize the convention is going to sell out ANYWAY regardless of what kind of guests it gets, shitty or non-shitty.

AN is about meeting friends, cosplayers. If you want to meet Japanese Guests, you SHOULD go to US cons. Canadian cons generally suck at getting Japanese guests.

If you want change at how AN invites its guests, volunteer, then after that, become a Staff, then after that, become a Department Head at AN. Complaining about AN's shitty guests will not change ANYTHING. People at the top will NOT listen.

People running AN (the executives) are in their 40s and 50s, AN's general attendees are 15 -25 years old, teenagers, young adults. So there is a HUGE generation gap here.

If you want change, do something. Complaining about it on Internet won't change a thing. Even AN executive once said, "people can complain all they want, I'm used to it."

AN does not have enough staff to constantly patrol the Dealer's Room to look for bootlegs.

The con is in a better place since it is in the city so you not only get the ability to go places but there are nicer places to get photoshoots done. Most people go there for the scenery instead of the actual con. When you compare it to AN, which is in an ugly area and there is only a handful of places to eat and nothing to do unless you have a car, it is easy to see why traveling to Quebec for a few days seems nice.

Lolita isnt a big thing at otakuthon, besides last year they havent had much con stuff and the tea party they had was the first time they had a tea party at the con.

Usually I'll just go in and out of panels until I find one I want to stay in. This runs at the cost of potentially missing the first 30 minutes of a great panel, but it works great for my short attention span.

>> No.8266889

Who are panels for anyway? I'm talking about series-based ones here.

If it's a series I haven't seen, I'm not going to be interested enough to see it.

If it's a series I've seen and find average or not too great, I obviously wouldn't want to go.

If it's a series I like a lot but doesn't have a huge fandom or I'm not part of the fandom, I wouldn't go because I know enough about it already.

The only series-based panels I would go to are the ones for series where I'm part of the fandom, but in this case I imagine most people there would be part of the fandom anyway and it would essentially be a sort of circlejerk thing.

I've never been to a proper panel because no matter how many times I look through panels, I always have one of the first 3 issues up there. I would definitely go to a panel I'm part of the fandom for, but no one does them at local cons and I don't care enough to make one.

That's just not true, otakuthon has an orgy every year (although there wasn't one last year) masquerade style, some people show up in cosplay. You do sort of have to be in the right circles to be invited but there have been a couple new people every year, it's doubled in size already.

I just hope it happens this year or we'll probably lose the regulars, organization and finding a large enough space is an issue and it's hard to coordinate people when things are hush-hush.

Ever considered starting a panel for them yourself?

If you really want to see a panel on some anime or manga that interests you, volunteer for it. Expecting other people to do it for you is why there is no panel for (x series).

The less people apply for panels, the more likely anime cons are to accept awful trainwrecks such as "Ask a Homestuck", "How to Get a Gamer Girlfriend", and "MLP Slash". They need to fill the rooms with something.

That actually reminds me of a pet peeve of mine: people who complain about panels on Western things at anime cons, yet aren't willing to host panels themselves to help fix the problem.

My main thing is iM@S.
We have actual iM@S guests at AN.
To get good seats at their Q&As and to get autographs, you need to line up for a long time.
That's why I haven't done a panel and that's why other iM@S people don't do panels. We've talked about it and that's the issue.

We would have time to take an hour maybe to go to a panel, but not necessarily enough time to set up for one.

There is something else I could maybe do a panel for but only one other guy in Toronto cares about it as much as I do and I don't know if he or I care enough to do it.

>> No.8270092

You think little of iM@S fans in Toronto. I know at least 10+ people that play the games, both console and mobile and love the franchise but don't bother with a panel because they know trying to get new people to get into any idols (Love Live, AKB48, iM@S, Aikatsu, PreCure, PriPara, etc etc) is a pain the ass and if people really wanted to be a fan, they'd already be part of it. The problem with idol franchises is that, unlike other anime(mainly) it just follows girls(mainly) doing idol stuff, which most people aren't used to despite being obessessed with celebrities and following their lives. Just that the celebrities are mainly 15~16 years old.

tl;dr iM@S fans are abundant in Toronto region, you're just not trying hard enough to look for them. Try /vg/ with their /@/ thread or even /a/ to look for Producers. Trying to find producers on facebook, tumblr, god knows where is going to give you little to no results.

>> No.8270115

I honestly feel that people running the panels are mainly trying to show off to everyone else about how much more they know about a series or trend. iM@S fans generally come from all over the world. I've met people from Europe, Japan, the States and even Australia come to AN just for the iM@S guests because of how hard it is to get them. I don't know how AN does it, but the biggest appeal it has imho is the iM@S guest it's able to bring for the past 2 years. Beyond that, it's shit.
