What other retards thought this was a good idea?

On a semi related note I specifically remember Ventrella arguing it was a good thing that the rulebook cost money because something along the lines of "It looks more professional and you could find a copy in a bookstore." In case there was any doubt in your mind you could not find a dead tree copy of the alliance larp rules in any bookstore I'm aware of.

I don't see a problem with that if there's transparency as to where the money goes. If they state outright that there's a one-time fee for the rulebook as a funding generator for events or starter gear or whatever, I'm cool with it.

Except alliance has chapters throughout the US so there'd be no way to know where the money was going. Though admittedly its a moot point since the rules are free now.

I'd imagine the funds would go into the coffers of the local land, not to some shadowy organization bent on world domination in Ohio or some such place. Like you said, it's moot, but it's not something I would consider to be an egregious affront to human dignity if a game were to charge for a rulebook.

>> No.8373190

>>8373143
I know it doesn't go back into the local chapter's pocket, but the local chapter also can't sell rulebooks to you, you would (back when they cost money) order online.

Our chapter had a stack of 10 copies in NPC camp for reference and also so new players could read them.

If I had to guess, a lot of the money goes to maintaining HQ's site since they have a private, specialty built area. I expect the rest of the money goes to Ventrella.

I don't begrudge him that money though- If he can make money off a rulebook for game, or the game itself, then good for him. Paying $8 for a hundred page book isn't going to kill anyone.

>> No.8373209

It's like Amtgard's dues system, where you get the full franchise if you're dues paid at your local park, and that money goes into the land fund for events and awards and other game-related expenses. Unless you've got a shady-ass Chancellor, it's pretty open and clear as to where the money is and what it's used for. I guess Alliance didn't use that kind of system, though.

Having a private site used to be a dream of mine.

I actually have found copies of the old NERO rulebooks in a used bookstore before. And the original one was sold straight out of a local gaming shop. It's good advertisement, if it's done right.

The local LARP sells hardcopy versions of the rulebook, but that's more to cover cost of printing than profit. DLing is free.

I wish there was something like in my part of the country. The campsite we got is quite nice and its twenty bucks for a weekend with cabins and a shower area along with enough copper to feed yourself which is a hell of a good deal if you put that in respects to a camp ground. Camp Sacajawea is pretty darn good in that regard- it'd seen plenty of LARP use before it got bought, and they've been remodeling/adding new cabins ever since they took over the place from the Scouts.

Being "green space" does mean there's limits, but there's plenty of fields big enough for setting up temporary structures ala Mythodea/Drachenfest/Epic Empires.

Watching that horse farm in Brokeloh turn into a small city for a week lets me know it's possible.

Temporary isn't really an option in California because nobody has storage space (though... I suppose if we owned the site we could store stuff on it).
Building actual buildings is difficult because we have a lot of earthquake laws regarding building, because the land we stand on could rip open into a gaping maw to hell at any moment.

My ideal would be a fort that we could tent in- with cabins for nobility and a big communal cabin for people who need to sleep indoors/with electricity for medical reasons.

Then litter the site with random walls/scaffolding/places to fight.

In Kendo if you didn't have both hands on the hilt to support the sword you would either get pushed down or your weapon would be pushed aside to open up for a retreating hit.

At a German swordplay seminar I went to you would be better off using your off hand to grapple and disarm them or push their arm aside to deliver a blow with the blade, hilt or crossguard. Trying to actually hit with your fist is a lot less useful then using your hand to grasp or hold.

In LARP you just have to learn not to do it the same way you have to learn not to do all the crap you've probably picked up from movies.

Tabards seem pretty popular and don't require a ton of effort or sewing expertise. There's a whole range of quality though. Some of them look like a beach towel with a hole cut in it and some of them are extremely detailed (appliques, embroidery, different fabrics, etc.). To their credit, Alliance was spawned from a game that started square in the Satanic Panic of the late 80's. The last thing they wanted was hordes of fucked up fundamentalists claiming that people were having devil-worshipping in the woods.

Even afterwards, there were so many players that just didn't want a game with religion in it that it stuck, and later on Alliance carried that with it when they split off.

(By comparison, LAIRE (the first NERO splitoff) gave no fucks and promptly put divine beings into their game shortly after splitting off, and many other spinoffs did in-game religious stuff as well. After the mid-90's or so, people weren't generally shitting bricks about that sort of thing anymore unless they'd started a game earlier.

Hey hey folks. Sorry to pull us back to the old thread, but I am a huge fan of bathing, just as our ancestors were... Remember that submersion baths on a regular basis is still a relatively new thing.

Twice a day at events. Once in the morning, once at night. Sometimes after fighting too. Heat up water over the pot, and use a basic, ewer, loofa/sponge and soap to wash myself completely.

Pic is my minimum toiletries that sit on a small table in my tent.

*Ewer (wash pitcher)
*Mirror
*Scrubbing lufa
*Towel
*Comb
*Tweezer/earspoon/pick
*Witch hazel for astringent/toner
*Clove oil (to smell good)

*Apple cider vinegar for deoderant (kept in the glass carafe) It sounds odd, but it really works.

He succeeded. Of course, other raised the bar after him, far higher in many cases. And Alliance proceeded to stagnate, as many of it's cousins in the US have before it- although they finally got on the latex weapon bandwagon, most games are chock-fulla boffers in the vast majority.

Bringing an instrument like this to a LARP is a bad idea, and that's completely disregarding that "picking up the lute" might just be a tad more difficult than you imagine, barring several years of classical schooling.

It's also worth nothing that when he started doing this, it was the 1980s. European LARP was basically a few primitive games in the UK that wouldn't have seemed out of place a decade later in the US.

Alliance was indeed a significant improvement at the time it was created, but it's become obsolete in many ways vs. "modern" games since. Considering how backwards a lot of US LARPs are in terms of costuming/kit, he's still doing better than the vast majority of what the US considers "fantasy LARP".

Remember: "LARPs" like pic related are far, far, far more prevalent in numbers and population than even the small step up Alliance represents in the US.

Now, mixing our body oil with a thicker oil (olive) and then scraping it off, help remove the dread skin particles and dirt missed by the scrubbing after bathing, and moisturizes the skin Add some lemon, clove, or lavender oil, and you're set for a hot date.

Very different systems all around.

Some games require "turns"... you swing three times, they swing three times, repeat.

Some games go by hit location... hit a head, instakill, hit an arm, leg, different things. This usually requires actual skill.

Some games are all out brawls, whoever can whip their weapon the fastest does the most damage first wins, no matter the location or the "fairness".

IMO the skill based ones are the best as long as you stick to the big organizations.
The combat systems (and the cultures) vary wildly and going from one combat system to another can be very jarring
Amtgarder here and I once showed up at a HFS (High Fantasy Society) park and they kinda tried to hug me with their swords in slow motion while I rolled the field, I was very confused. I went to an SCA event and they asked me and a buddy to leave because we were sparring with our Amtgard legal gear in our down time and they had deemed our boffer swords as too dangerous. Went to a local LARP called Action League (very poorly put together and having almost no rules) and I made a few poor kids very scared after rolling their field and adhering to their rule of calling all of your shots before throwing them.

>>8388368
Tapfights with padded sword simulacrums. Sometimes there are bows that fire ~30-40 feet and people throwing birdseed packets to represent magic.

But seriously some LARPs use stats and have set damage numbers and effects you have to call out. Others use a 'black knight' system where attacks will disable the individual body parts they hit. There are others, but those are the big ones we have stateside.

well first of all the target:
It was the local governor.
He started to act strangely doing strange things, and sometimes even borderline heretically, but mostly he was disoriented, forgeting things, etc. So brother Kasimir, a monk, did a little magically what the fuck is happening spell on him and realized that he no longer has a soul. I asked for help from the captain of a mercenary band so the miracle of the Emperor can happen in a subtle way. I mean if we start killing people in plain sight people will get confused and there will be chaos and more dead bodies. We needed a miracle instead.

The Governor lingered around the main place of the settlement, in front of the inn, close to the shrine and a lot of campsites, so obviously people always walking left and right.
To drop down the number of witnesses brother Kasimir started to talk with various people, told them they are needed elsewhere, or asked if they can help with various religios duties, etc. Meanwhile the Captain stood in the door of the inn, talking with the innkeeper and basically covering me and the Governor with his full body so noone can see us from there.
In the meantime I stood next to the Governor and did a little small talk about random things and kept an open eye to the moment when nobody is watching.

Meanwhile the undead not too far away from us did their undead thing constantly making noises, sometimes sounding horns, etc. One such time the right moment came, noone was watching so I knocked the Governor out then shouted that the undead are coming,
Little panic was ensued, people getting ready to an undead attack and I brought the unconscious body of the Governor to the shrine (witch was the backroom of the inn) and put him on a bed.
The Captain immediately stood in the door so noone can see what's happening and calm down the random people. I just casually grabbed the fluffy from the shrine, rolled it up and started to choke to death the Governor. Because I didn't wanted to leave any weapon marks on his body. Although the choking sounds were a little too loud so the Captain had to raise his voice a little, talking to the people outside of the shrine, fortunately brother Kasimir arrived just in time and realized what's happening so he started to pray loudly and encouraged others to do that too. This way nobody could heard the strange sounds from the shrine.
At last the Governor choked to that and to my surprise his body disappeared and a very strange sound was made by his disappearing body (he was overcome by an entity, later known as to us as the Emptiness)
Anyway a little later the undead indeed attacked because of that strange sound, there was no corpse that some meddling kids could investigate and we secretly high fived with brother Kasimir and the Captain when noone was looking on the fact that another miracle of the Emperor happened when it was needed

I use actual military stuff, largely because the Army gave it to me for the low, low price of a year of my life, a lot of metal in my leg, and a limp.

But I'm playing a character who both came from a well-equipped corporate background in an area that wasn't under a fallout plume in our game documentation (east of Houston TX) and so had access to such gear, and who explicitly raided a storage locker at the edge of the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Crater during my first game, so having that stuff isn't a stretch. If I had a quality Thompson, I absolutely would.

The game rules limit us to <250fps and single-action weapons (no automatics). Which in turn means that we can only really buy fairly cheap airsofts, and in turn THAT means that they break a lot. At one point I went through 3 Thompsons in 4 games, and at that point I stopped giving much of a shit about detailing the weapon. I throw some silver weathering on it and it's "good enough" for as long as it lasts. At $20 for a replacement, it's not worth spending 10 hours on filling the holes and painting them to match the wood grain.

I've got my eye on a full-weight, low-FPS replica Thompson airsoft (without stuff like screw holes) if I ever manage to find a fully-automatic gun in-game, but actual automatics are really expensive (in-game) to purchase AND to keep running, and I just don't have the resources to pull that off yet.

Besides, it doesn't look so bad in action.

You're not the first person to say that. I think I was, honestly.

But the thing only comes with rails, and the top rail is molded directly into the plastic, so I can't remove it. AND the rail interferes with the iron sights. It's a reflex sight, not a telescopic sight, but if I want to be able to hit anything at all, the uselessness of the iron sight necessitates a scope.

Since the spam filter keeps catching my direct link, go look at Airsoft Megastore and search for "Cybergun Thompson M1A1 RIS Railed Concept Spring Rifle w/ Hi-Cap Mag". That's the gun.

I really don't get the 3 attack then rest rule. Why have this? It totally wrecks any advantage you get over a less skilled opponent. If I get inside the reach of a polearm I'm not going to step back and reset so he gets his reach advantage back.

>> No.8392639

>>8392499
>I really don't get the 3 attack then rest rule. Why have this? It totally wrecks any advantage you get over a less skilled opponent.

There's actually three reasons for this. It's generally called a "flurry" rule.

1) A ton of US larps don't want you to have an advantage over a less-skilled opponent. The thought is that you are not your character, and it's unfair for somebody who is skilled OOG (but a new player in that larp) to be able to stomp on somebody who is unskilled OOG (but has been playing that PC in the larp for years). The veteran's CHARACTER should be more skilled than the PLAYER. Note that this is a dumb policy, but it's extremely common.

2) It's a reaction to ultralight dickswords. Unless you've tried to fight a UL wielder, it's difficult to articulate how much of an disadvantage a guy swinging a reasonably-weighted, 1-lb latex weapon built like a real sword has, when facing a guy with a ludicrously-long, 5oz dicksword that can change direction 3 or more times in the middle of a swing. Generally speaking, each feint in the middle of a swing counts as a "swing" to the flurry rule, so this rule is *intended* to put a little bit of a break on UL wielders. It also stops people from "machine-gunning" swings; moving their 5oz weapon through 4 inches of motion during the swing and damaging you each time it hits (but if you knock their weapon away, you're "hitting too hard") at a rough "3 swings per second" rate.

>cont

>> No.8392648

>>8392639
>cont

3) It stops people from panicking when under a sustained assault. Most folks don't know how to handle a fast, sustained, series of attacks, and a fair few will essentially curl up into a mental shell when you do it. While I disagree with this rule in general, this rationalization I can actually sort of sympathize with, even though I disagree with the rule; I watched a teenage girl go into a full-bore, "call an ambulance" panic/asthma attack as a direct result of being pressed - hard - by an attacker. This is something that SHOULD be trained for by larp organizations; even the SCA requires you to get "pressed" by your veteran test partner when you're getting your weapon authorizations. But since the big draw on larps here is that you can walk in off the street and play without any mandatory competency or safety training whatsoever, it becomes difficult to actually get people to a point where they can be pressed safely.

Let me reiterate this. I DO NOT agree with this sort of rule. You ARE your character in a larp, and it's functionally impossible to separate out the PC's physical abilities from the players as long as live combat is a part of the system. But these are the reasons cited as to why this sort of rule exists.

Hell, during CASTLE development, this rule was pushed for, and I was actually cited as a reason FOR the rule; I use swords professionally, and it was "unfair" to other players that I get that sort of advantage when I haven't done anything in-game to "earn" it (like pay skill points or something).

>wrecks any advantage you get over a less skilled opponent
Answered your own question, man. Nerds get really mad when someone is just better at them at something. Bear in mind that most local LARPs have to cater to whatever whiny manbaby contingent makes up their core.

For the longest time my brother was convinced that swords were either fencing foils or 10 lb wrought iron bars. Sadly this viewpoint a lot more common than you think; there are a few guys at my game who own 'swords' from a local smith. The issue is that these swords are untapered lengths of stainless steel with a huge secondary bevel on one side and no sense of balance whatsoever. these guys all insist that this is what 'real broadswords' handled like.

Also a Sci-fi/Fantasy LARP in my area posted pictures from their recent event. Want some?

Disclaimer: I am not a part of this LARP, nor do I ever have any intention of going. That being said, I'd really like some fucking context for this.

The fact that this shares players with my own game is revolting

Adding this to "very cool ideas if anyone was actually capable of putting stuff together."

I'm more weirded out by the bulge on the guy on the right. It reminds me of the pregnant enemy from dead space for some reason.

I actually know the guy on the left. It goes to say that he's put more energy into costuming than anyone else there

Flesh tone! Whyyyy! if you are tan/taupe colored don't make garb in that color. It will make you look like a saggy baggy elephant gijinka.
