Used to have the most unpredictable months, have about 1 or two truly safe weeks. Cons weren't fun.
Started getting Depo in January last year. No period since. I don't even have to think of it at cons any more and it makes the whole thing easier.

Also trick that I found, Juice 3 fresh lemons and it slows down/stops everything for about 6-8 hours. I used to drink that before I went to meets and things to make it a bit safer.

i haven't been able to function go out or do anything on my period for the past few months since i've gotten back on birth control, i went off it for a while because i didn't have health insurance but i got some state insurance just for birth control and parent planning type stuff

however the month before i got back on my birth control i think i had a miscarriage, i did really well not to have sex with my bf the entire 6 months i wasn't on my birth control (i mean we still did stuff he just didn't put it in my vagina) but one night we wound up trying to have sex with a condom
he didn't even finish inside of me but the condom did actually break so i was thankful for that but damn my next period was the worst period i'd ever had and my mom told me i probably had a miscarriage because of the amount of bleeding i was experiencing (it was seriously a lot and i was considering going to the hospital) and the fever and pain i was in

Watch out, most pregnancies end in miscarriage (most people don't even realize they are having one) but after the first time you become more... er... fertile, I guess is the word? It is more likely to stick after the first time is what I am saying, keep some pregnancy tests around and use em if you feel like something is off, even on birth control. Won't work for meetups but for a one-off event like a con, you can get put on a pill that's like a weaker version of the contraceptive pill, which doesn't work as birth control but also doesn't have so many side-effects as the contraceptive pill because it's a lower dose, but will delay your period. You go to your doctor and tell them you have, IDK, a beach holiday or a long hike in the wilds coming up and your period is due then, and they'll prescribe it to you. I got prescribed Utovlan when I had to go on a week-long fieldcourse without proper toilet facilities, and it was perfect, I had literally no side effects, not even the mild ones like mood swings. I got it for free since I live in the UK and was under 18 at the time, but even if you don't qualify for it for free it's only like, the £7 nominal prescription charge to UK residents.

You can also buy them over the counter without the embarrassment of going to the doctor, but that will cost you loads more money: https://onlinedoctor.superdrug.com/period-delay-ppc.html?gclid=COSD4-Hi-cUCFYrJtAod4ikAZA&gclsrc=aw.ds

As a gross side story, my mum had a menstrual cup as a kid (not like the modern ones, it was thicker, opaque and orange or something) and it went missing. Apparently toddler me had taken it to use as a hat for my dolls!

I'd be worried about wearing a revealing cosplay if I was on my period, but lolita is no problem. Usually I'm wearing underwear+tights+bloomers+petticoat - that's a lot of layers for the blood to get through before it gets anywhere near my dress (I wear bloomers over my tights to hold them up because I'm tall and tights for Chinese/Japanese sizes ride down on me).

Gross story so if you're going to be a baby cover your ears

>go to momocon for a saturday only because i didn't have much money
>wore giant ballgown luka cosplay, pic related, not me but same dress
>white crinoline underneath
>suddenly my vagina decided to open the floodgates to the red sea
>no tampons on me, expected period to start 2 weeks later
>rush boyfriend out in atlanta, the most poorly designed city to drive in to find tampons
>friends were supposed to stay with me so i don't bleed to death without any witnesses
>"hey anon we're going to the dealers room instead"
>can't risk standing up and unleashing the beast
>sat on the con floor for 2 hours probably, accepting my fate
>every time someone asked for a picture had to make the fakest pokerface when the niagara falls began again while standing up
>boyfriend comes back with tampons
>somehow manage to lift up giant skirt and crinoline and dam the river
>takes one handicap stall and 10 minutes of patience because dress is basically impossible to take off without assistance
>person in wheelchair waiting outside stall, feel bad
>"gf you ruined con for me let's go home"
>ok.jpg
>crinoline goes straight in the trash when i get home

Now I'm on birth control so I don't have periods anymore, they usually lasted up to a month and I would use an entire box of tampons in a day. I'm just so happy that dress was black.

Holy shit, did you not go to a doctor and get prescribed birth control earlier? I have a friend that was put on the pill at 14 for that reason, very heavy periods (2 weeks though, not a month) and the doctor was worried she'd get anaemia.

I'm anemic with PCOS. Periods were heavy and lasted nearly two weeks sometimes. I'm on Jolessa right now which is still a pill but I only get my period once every three months now, and It's not painful or a total blood bath anymore. I didn't gain too much weight either, only about 5 pounds.
Back in high school I just wouldn't go to class at all when I had my period. Senior year I had about a 50% attendance rate.
I was always lucky my period fell after a con even when it was bad.

I have some mooncup questions that I haven't been able to ask irl.

Do they work like a ladies' condom? Like, you just squeeze the edges and shove it on up there (gently, obviously).

Secondly, do they FEEL like a ladies' condom? I find them really uncomfortable, so this might just be a dealbreaker for me.

Finally, and this might be covered by the other two questions - how squishy are they? I have trouble with tampons because they're so rough, but if these were smoother and fit better I'd definitely give them a try.

I'm a different moon cup anon from above, I've been using a Lunette menstrual cup for about a year and wish I had switched earlier. Never had a problem and they answer a lot of questions on the website
>https://www.lunette.com/au/

>Like, you just squeeze the edges
pretty much, just fold it together, pop in in place and release

>Secondly, do they FEEL like a ladies' condom?
I have never used a ladies condom, but when the cup is in place I cannot actually notice/feel that it is there because the Lunette is the same shape as the cervix

>how squishy are they?
The Lunette is hospital silicone so think of it like a thicker version of those silicone baking trays, which will give you and idea how soft/squishy they are.

They hold far more flow than tampon and don't irritate the skin. I pop it in at the start of the day and then don't need to worry about it for about 10 hours. There is no smell like with the bacteria that feeds on tampons either and no toxic shock risk.

>> No.8381437

>>8381388
They're made of silicone so I fold mine over on itself to get it in. Once it's placed, I can't really feel mine at all. They're not absorbent like tampons so they don't slowly dry everything up, and it also means they're easy to remove. Moon cups aren't rigid at all, so they move with your body. I don't ever want to go back to tampons or pads

>> No.8381443

>Have you ever been so excited for a meetup or con only to wake up and discover it's that time of the month?
Nope. Though I've been on my period during meet-ups, it's never been a "SURPRISE!" kind of moment.

>Have you ever started while at a con or meetup?
Also nope.

>Do you still go dressed up and risk it, or do you just not bother?
Unless there were other circumstances going on, yes. I got into lolita "late", so I already had a handle on my periods by then. They were pretty rough when I was in high school and at university (so much so that they suspected I might have endometriosis and put me on the pill at 17; things levelled out after there, but it took years for me to be comfortable with things like tampons and changing in public toilets).

>Any horror stories? Any solutions?
None of my own, but I received a dress with suspicious rusty-brown stains on the lining once. Was a bit less than thrilled that the seller hadn't said anything.

All that said, I currently have the implant as my birth control, due to other health issues. It caused pretty considerable weight gain, but has otherwise been side-effect free. Given the choice between putting on 15 pounds and not having periods for three years, or risking bleed-throughs due to malabsorption of the pill, I'll go with the 15 pound gains.

>> No.8381480

>>8381388
you fold it and then insert it
they don't feel like anything, unless you don't cut the stem, in that case you feel the stem sticking out of your snatch, they fit low like tampons and you can't have intercourse with them in
depends on the cup, I have a ladycup (Yuro brand, also makers of LadyP) and it's quite stiff but I've heard some other brands are softer. It has to be able to bounce back into shape when inserted and lodge in there nicely.

My question for the thread: what do you do about the cup leaking? When I wear mine it's nothing quite terrible but I still enjoy clean underwear too much to ignore it. I was hoping it'd stay in place no matter how you sit but with me that doesn't seem to be the case.

Also it's so difficult to remove, part of the reason why I sometimes give up and just stick a pad in is because it's so much hassle to boil it, remove it, reinsert etc all the while somehow having clean hands and not having it drop into the toilet by accident.

>> No.8381490

I'm unfortunately anemic for that very reason, I told the doctor and she nearly ran to get me a box instantly, I owe that woman my life and I'm never coming off birth control.

Fully expecting this to be me tomorrow. Fortunately, with all the layers lolita provides, I feel a lot more confident wearing lolita on my period than normie clothes. Normal clothing only has two layers: the underwear and the outwear, whereas lolita has underwear, tights, bloomers, petticoat(s), and the dress.

>> No.8381497

Here's a tip that should be obvious but for some reason, most people don't know it:

If you're staying in a nice hotel or a con hotel and your period starts unexpectedly, the front desk of MOST hotels have tampons on hand to give to you. I've gone entire con weekends on just asking the front desk.

Don't ask any of the housekeepers or anything, ask the front desk. That's almost always where they are. I have yet to be at a hotel where this is not the case but I'm not going to say "oh yeah it's universal!" since IDK.

They're 90% of the time regular absorbency tampons but if you need something, they're there.

>> No.8381515

>>8381480
The only time i have had the cup leak was when it wasn't in place or I hadn't changed it in time and it was full. If leakage is a worry maybe invest in some cloth reusable pads?

To remove it you need to break the seal around your cervix - just pinch/squeeze the bottom reservoir. The top should then contort and release. I only boil mine at the end of the cycle, mid cycle I just wash it with hot soapy water, rinse it off and pop it back in. I find it easier to change when I am in the shower, because my toilet is right next to it to flush the contents.

Yeah, this is mostly true for chains. I've not had to do it myself (though I've had to ask them for a hairbrush and toothbrush before when my luggage got lost on a flight), but a friend clued me into it on their "menu" book. They usually list the toiletries they'll provide as a courtesy in the back of that little folder-binder-thing that you find on the table in your room. Go to your gynaecologist. Express these feelings to the doctor. The doctor will help you pick a method of controlling your period that suits your requirements.

We can't help you beyond our own anecdotal experiences. If your periods are that bad, your best bet is some form of hormonal birth control. There are dozens of options with varying levels of invasiveness (Nuvaring versus implant versus IED versus various pills or patches).

When I go in to get it done, I'll sit and close my eyes, face away from the nurse too and tell her what my plans are for the next con. They always make small talk to try and try and distract you.

I find thinking about one specific thing I'm going to do at con, and focus on that as I get it done. It blocks out the 4 second long warm-numb feeling in my upper arm.

Seriously go see a gynecologist.
Even if you're not exactly 18 (you shouldn't really be here if that's the case but I won't judge), and your life is hell because of your periods, if you have a chance to get birth control to sort out the pain its a godsend. There are other options but typically birth control handles it pretty well.
My PCOS used to cause cyst ruptures even when I wasn't on my period and I'd be on the couch huddled up in pain until it faded. I think the birth control helped with that. Sometimes I feel them anyway but they definitely do not hurt as bad as they used to.

I don't know how likely it is that if unchecked you'll go infertile but it is definitely a worthwhile trip to the gyno.

You should definitely see a gyno first, but sometimes bad cramps are just bad cramps and you just have to find some way to treat the symptoms (be it BC or painkillers or other options).

Made a world of difference to me, only hassle is getting into the routine of remembering to take it at a certain time. And that just becomes habitual after a bit. I went from incapacitated to it being no big thing. I only really need a pad for a day and half, the rest of the week, a liner, and that's it.

I'd honestly rather get it over with at a convention where I'll have a ton of things to distract me rather than suffer through it at work. Mine can be kind of irregular though and tends to end up half a week or a week later than the tracker predicts, knock on wood.

I used to have long heavy very painful periods even after taking bc; prior to bc and on rare occasions I'd also be vomiting if I didn't take any pain relief as soon as my period started. Ponstan helped with cramping until last year when I started experiencing such intense pain my doctor thought I had appendicitis and I had to go to hospital. It was ruptured cysts. Which then was the norm for me almost every month until I saw a really good gyanecologist had a laproscopy and located Endo. Also sex is painful for me a lot of the time.

I have paralyzing painful periods. Went on the pill and they made no difference whatsoever. Nothing changed. GYN had me start skipping pills for as long as possible so I have one less often since they didn't get any better for me, but I can only go a couple months before my body rejects the meds and I bleed and it progressively gets worse until it turns into a period and won't stop until I go off the pills and have one. And it's completely unpredictable. Ugh. I feel like I should just be happy it's not every month now, but I'm not. I'm bitter at the cards life dealt me and mad that I can't do anything more to give myself better health.

>periods getting worse over the past year or two
>bleed around 6~7 days, heaviest the first 3~4
>in recent months vomiting whenever i get my cycle, almost fainting while trying to walk, excruciating pain (i am a big baby but lord it hurt)
>mother please help me
>she gave me this awful period, no one else in whole family has it
>finally go to gyno, get the pills, told to start after my next cycle
>they want to do an ultrasound to make sure there's nothing wrong with my sexual organs
>imfine.png
>start on the sunday after my period starts, etc.
>in a week or two cycle supposed to be coming back around, gyno said if i bleed 2 weeks gotta up the dosage, 1 week of bleeding is fine
i hope my problems are going to disappear at last. the side effects of weight loss, breast increase and acne clearing would be a nice bonus, but i really just want my cycle to be lighter. also fuck you to all of my family who always told me to suck it up, everyone has a period, etc. they are all asses. if you anons have bad cycles, consider getting on bc. anyways, i am SUPER lucky i never started while in lolita (i never kept track because i dreaded it coming, i could tell a week in advance anyhow because of my pre-period cramping and mood), because i wear pastels and white petticoats. it would be awful to bleed on those clothes (and i dont find them comfortable on the cycle anyways).

It depends on your flow. On my single heavy day I find myself needing to pour it three or four times. But for the rest of the period, I only do it twice a day. A menstrual cup can stay in for up to 12 hours, which is a lot longer than a tampon. No risk of TSS, either. Just make sure you boil it once in a while.

>getting your tubes tied is a little more risky and complicated than a vasectomy
>very few people are willing to do a reversal procedure, if possible at all
>it's expensive, so if you regret it you will have wasted money for nothing
And last but not least

However, my next con has been pushed back to a week before its usual date, right onto The Week. I'm REALLY hoping my period starts before the actual weekend so I don't have to lay on the ground crying in a bathroom dressed as Yosuke Hanamura while my Yu runs to daiso to get heat packs

I used to cosplay when I was younger but my social anxiety eventually got the best of me and now I haven't done it in years. I've switched to being the con mom for my friends though, because I love helping them and they all tend to wear super elaborate costumes. I usually carry this bigass bag with me that I stock with snacks, water, pins and quick fix stuff, first aid, and plenty of pads and tampons. You wouldn't believe how many times I've been at a con and been approached by some frazzled or upset rando asking for a pad or anything for their friend and I just give a few to them.
