Kind of interesting, but they didn't nail the details enough for this to look anything but sloppy. The panels on the boots and the fingers don't look intentional, neither do the diamonds on the joints. It took me a minute to realize they had done an intentional more "detailed" design. I hate talk like that in regards to super cartoony series: the most challenging thing is getting super basic costumes to match the form, fit and silhouette of the cartoon. Adding unnecessary details just mucks up the design.

I think the problem is the top eyes. They're just so freakishly big and don't fit the face the way characters with larger eyes do. I think if they were both normal sized the way Garnet's are it might look a bit better. Or just swap the eyes for arms. Though it seems like the multi armed fusions are reserved for more than 3 gems except Opal. I'm thinking it has something to do with Amethyst.

If you have photoshoot it isn't super hard if you can be patient and fiddle with some settings. I usually either use the lasso tool to select the area and manually adjust the hue/saturation/etc, or use the colour replace tool and tweak the shadows/highlights with burn and dodge and a bit of colouring. The important part is not accidentally colouring things that aren't skin, like bits of clothing or edges.

Hey gulls, I've got a question for you. I'm working on Rose's dress, but I'm having trouble deciding where to put seams since the art style shows the whole thing as seamless. Do I do a princess seam, add a waistline somewhere, or something else? I'm tossing up cosplaying Opal or Lapis, I've seen other cosplayer use manikin arms and stuff, which looks fine form a distance but is a bit of a mess up close, does anyone know how to get the arms thing to look decent. Also boday paint tips? I've never painted my whole body before let alone for a con, I want it to stay on for most the day and look nice as possible.

There's a tutorial in the post...

They said they used 1.5mm plastic, that's gotta be pretty lightweight, but I don't know how rigid it is in larger sizes. I think an aluminum frame (at minimum, extending from where it's secured at back up and out to the wing shapes) would be lightweight enough and rigid enough for this material. I would put the diffuse light orbs in the 'drops' of the wings since that seems to be the most natural place for that shape.

You could combine ideas from that with this method which is described as "Heat-shaped PETG strips to form a half-sphere structure to support organza, all attached together by tape. The most vivid sheen swirls in the bottom left photo were created by a torch. " Combine metallic high-shine organza with light orbs and the thermoplastic?

The thing about using plexiglass is that it would end up being flat. I honestly wouldn't suggest it. I just finished a plexiglass prop and it was hell, and as other anon said you're gonna need power tools, too. And the cheaper you get, the rougher your edges are gonna be and the more you're gonna have to spend time fixing them.

I know very little about prop making, so this is just an idea thrown out there that I hope you can work with. Once upon a time, I followed some tutorial for fake lucite cuffs and a ponytail cover using a plastic called perspex that I found at home depot.
And I think maybe cutting out the wing shape in the plastic then heating and molding it to the shape you want and installing leds near the harness would work? I'm imagining that rave gear they sell at cons, where it's only a couple leds but the light reflects through the plastic and lights it all up.

hey seagulls! i'm cosplaying pearl this month and I've got everything (mostly) figured out except for her skin. i'm a pretty pale person but not pearl pale and I'm wondering if I should bother with body paint? i have experience with it and a lot of leftover white paint that I was thinking of applying in a very thin layer just to get a tint. is this a good idea?

IF you can get it thin, sure, but in my experience white is a nightmare to make even. Personally I think pearls should go for a porcelain look with lots of powder and some goth-style foundation. If you avoid stark white though, you should be fine.

Yes to body paint, it'll definitely set you apart! The gems are all aliens, and IMO keeping human skin breaks that illusion.

White powder will also help a lot with smoothing over the white paint, since I know it's hard to apply evenly.

Anybody have any idea how I should go about choosing the colors for Rainbow Quartz? The only things we've seen from her are in that weird purple/pink lighting so I'm not sure if I should just use that scene as a reference.

I like them but I wouldn't make the hair that light blonde shade - white or pink/white seems more appropriate to me. If you wanted to be a BAMF you could incorporate a bunch of the white/pink/purple/blonde rainbow shades in too.

I like this a lot but I agree that the wig looks unfinished and I'm wincing at the clashing cool/warm pinks. The shield is really clean, and I like the dress a lot besides the colors.

Oh god, so many crappy Steven Universe cosplays. So much shitty body/face paint or none at all. The sheer amount of Rose cosplayers who didn't even try. Some you could barely tell was Rose because of the pink wig and Mr. Universe t-shirt.

It felt like homestuck all over again.

I really wouldn't be surprised. It was just a sea of poorly done costumes. I think the amethyst cosplayers had the worst paint jobs. Saw a lot of Lapis but they did much better jobs with their paint. Tons of Rose with poor job in the costume overal(did see a few that actually tried making the dress) but the majority threw a Mr. Universe shirt over a wedding dress or even just jeans. Saw a few Garnet's. Several Pearls. Saw one who seemed to have gotten the color right. Also a sea of Stevens. Lots, and lots of Stevens.

I agree it looks great, but please refrain from the Tumblr phrasing. What usually happens in these threads is that the flow of conversation will latch onto one or two topics for a while, but other people scrolling down the thread afresh will catch the cool-looking whatever and comment on it.

What I don't understand is why a single newbie cosplayer would ever WANT to do a full body-paint outfit. Unsealed paint is uncomfortable as fuck. You feel greasy or dusty or just downright slimy all over, all day, and it gets on everything you love, and several things other people love. Why would you subject yourself to that shit for any extended period of time? Do it right or not at all.
