Nostalgia time. Remember "the" Hot Topic dress that came out in 2005 or so? And the dramatic posts saying that lolita was "now dead" because girls would go into Hot Topic, buy the dress and declare themselves lolita? Good times.

What are some other 'remember whens'?

Oh man. Was that dress really 2005? I thought it was a bit later than that.

I miss when Meta's lucky packs weren't almost "starter sets" ("You get 1 skirt, 1 blouse, 1 accessory!" with the skirts usually being 100% shirred and made from leftover fabric) and were actually just "hey you'll get random stuff worth x amount of money." Nowadays everyone gets mostly the same stuff, but years back you might find someone who got 2 jsks, or 2 skirts and a hairbow, just sort of random things and not necessarily "welp we've got a bunch of bolts leftover from this release, time for that same ol' skirt."

>> No.8704549

>>8704513
To be fair, that dress wasn't bad at all, it's still passable as oldschool with today's standards. It could pass as old Btssb or Maxicimam.

>>8704526
I remember this. Everyone wanted it, because it was piss cheep, and it had the right silhouette for lolita (no excuse for the fugly lace though). The black version was acceptable though, it resembled some Moitie to some extent.

>> No.8704552

>>8704546
I feel like their packs haven't changed all that much though. You still had starter packs/special set packs from them back then, too. They were just at different times of year from the leftover packs.

And people BITCHED about the leftover packs because so many of them were two pairs of bloomers, a shitty print no one wanted, and an ugly blouse with raschel lace.

>> No.8704557

>>8704546
I miss when they had simpler and nonprint stuff for lucky packs. They had polkadot and weird fabrics that they would make dresses and bloomers out of.

However I do have to say that I like the fully-shirred skirts. They are comfortable and great for casual wear.

>Momo & Jia Baby Shop at TaoBao is only selling to China local market. And all of theirs photos in their shop are taken by themsleves as well. All of the dresses in their shop are handmake by the owner one by one.

>From what we know, the Momo from ebay will use the other brand's photos in their shop, however the Momo & Jia Baby Shop will only use theirs own product photos for showing.

I get your confusion, though, the first time I saw mention of a Meta petticoat LP was on here and I didn't know they were doing one -- I'm subscribed to their blog via feedly and their facebook, you'd think they would post about it there. But they did hype up the two lucky packs in one of their customer emails once the sale went live. I really miss the lifestyle aspect, I remember in the old livejournal lolita handbook, there was a list with something like, 100 romantic lifestyle ideas or something. I took that list to fucking heart man, I went on little walks by myself in lolita with my new parasol I bought directly from Baby after a hell of a process and a shitload of cash, I spun around my room wearing my first Baby dress and listening to Malice Mizer, I bought all the English G&LB's and looked through them time after time, I went on EGL like 10 times a day, I used to spend hours curling my hair into perfect sausage-curls and top it off with a black and white headdress I made from a G&LB pattern. I had lots of Meta underknee-socks with a shitton of ruffled raschel lace, remember those? Oh man this thread ignited my nostalgia... I miss the times when AP's first prints were controversial and people didn't consider them lolita. I miss the times when we were all like excited kids about the fashion, sharing every little tip about how to find or make something lolita, since we had such few ways to obtain it, we were a lot more crafty. There were tutorials for everything, simple skirts, headdresses, bows, sewing lace to bought kneesocks, making wristcuffs from lace, etc. I wish the community was more focused on lifestyle now, that dreamy air of lolita is gone to me now, it doesn't take any effort to be lolita anymore, and you can notice the effect that has.

I agree. Every single old school lolita thread fills me with joy to know more people feel the same. I guess it's funny how at the time experimenting a lot was a bit forbidden and could get you posted on getoffegl, but at the same time, you look into street snaps and everything felt so... free? Lolita had more of a romantic point at the time. I am really content with more brands shipping internationally and the fashion growing but now it's becoming formulaic as well. Lolita was never cheap but to me it feels like to get e-fame you just need to be rich + have some decent coordination more than anything. Livestyle also helped lolita be more like a subculture IMHO instead of just a fashion. Since old school focuses so much on lost eras it's only fitting we old schoolers feel this way, so mellow lol... it's definitely romantic if you think about it.

Kirakirajenjen. What ended up ticking people off was that she advertised her sales as "Group order for petticoats, $40 each plus shipping!" without mentioning that the actual price she paid for the petticoats was $8 each. It was normal to add on a little fee for doing a group order, plus shipping of course, but $32 fee or each petticoat? Especially since there's far different expectations for quality in a $8 petticoat versus a $40 one. For a $40 petticoat, I would expect something similar to In the Starlight or the cheaper Malco Modes. What people were getting were, well, $8 Chinatown petticoats which were at a mark-up already in Chinatown. I recall her shipping her petticoats in bizarre ways too, such as shoving them into those thin soda boxes.

I have one of hers (that I bought from someone else) that I still use. My one complaint about it is that the nylon material for the "waist" portion doesn't wash well, so it's gotten stained from wear over the last however many years I've had it now (almost seven I guess?) and that's gross. Otherwise, it's a nice petticoat for layering, because that netting is stiff as anything.

Since egl is clearly dead, and Facebook groups can be hard to find, I think the lolita subreddit is the next "easily findable" thing for beginners. Hence the annoying newbies.

I like the fact that it has the up/down vote. Gets rids of trolls by the community rather than waiting on mods.

And something on topic, I remember sweet rococo, I was saving up money for a year right before they closed down back in my high school days. Ordered overpriced bodyline from cosmates after that devastating news.

I got into lolita just as a friend was getting out of it. So I'd spent my early years with her going "omg wonder party is so popular it goes for a lot" and I was going "nope, not anymore lol". I actually did try to pick up dreaming macaron yellow OP just because she said "dreaming macaron was everybody's dream print!", and that's where I found out why a lot of the prices drop so much. It's only half about the print, the other half is that after 6 years most of the dresses you can find for sale have been worn many times, been through multiple owners, have been modified, have stains or marks on them or faded, and so on. After looking through 10-20 auctions I gave up finding a new-ish dress for a low price.

It gives some perspective when I see trending pieces go for double their retail price on auction. On the one hand, you know the prices will probably drop to retail or below in 5-10 years time. On the other hand, 5-10 years is a long time to wait for a dream print's prices to drop.

I think it doesn't help that a number of prominent members have left lolita and that many images are deleted/broken, so it's hard to see older posts, and some of these people used to run places like Hellolace and the comm sales which we know is out of date and being used less and less.

Wank as a term is more of an old fandoms thing which is why it was used so heavily in LJdom. I feel like back in the day if you were on egl on LJ, you already had an LJ, so you probably were already fandom-y in some way or another (before lolita spread in popularity to more normalfag levels). That probably explains why it doesn't really get used anymore.

>> No.8721879

>>8720684

Ah, I didn't mean to imply they were all worn to the point of "worn out" or "always damaged". At that time I had two prints I was looking for, Memorial Cake and Dreaming Macaron, and the difference between the much older Dreaming Macaron, and the newer Memorial Cake was really obvious. It was still possible to find Memorial Cake that was brand new with tag, had never been worn, worn once, or a mix of these. But Dreaming Macaron, without fail, they all said that the dress had been worn many times, nervous buyers please do not bid.

I'm pretty sure most of the Dreaming Macaron dresses would still look good, maybe they even look mint or near-new. To most of us, dresses being 6 years old, worn often, and still looks good means it's still a bargain, but to many people, the difference between "worn many times" and "only worn once" is why the price for the former would be much lower than the latter when pricing an auction. The dress itself may not have any issues, but buyers would be less willing to shell out a lot of money when they're bidding on it over the internet. So the prices of dresses that have been worn a lot tend to be lower than those that are new with tags. And most items that are 6 years old tend to have been worn a lot. It's not always just the popularity of the print that makes the value of the dress go down.

6 years isn't that much but if a person has washed the item many times, unless it's dry clean the print would fade a bit, usually the prints start to fade if washed otherwise not but we can't wear dirty dresses, ew. I hope in future there are some tips how to recolor or make again brillant these prints or online services to fix faded/worn out items, with solid items you can dye them again but prints no.
Weird, usually from the pics you can see if they item is faded. One day i bought a Dreamy Dollhouse, it had a internal yellowing in one of the straps and a slight fading (not sure if was the print itself or just a fading), overall the condition was pretty good but i sold it because it didn't fit me.

>> No.8726595

>>8726556

Actually, considering a lot of the older dresses were on cotton, it's more common for them to start pilling and get fuzzy, rather than for the print to fade. They're also prone to becoming, how do I say this, a bit "loose". Like the seams aren't as tight as before, the fabric seems a bit floppier (so bows might have trouble standing up, or skirts have trouble draping on a less poofy petticoat), that kind of thing. These things are harder to see in most photos.

Although I guess you can make the argument that if it's not visible in a photo then to some people it doesn't really matter if the dress doesn't have the crisp, new feeling.

Just an additional note btw, fading mostly happens in direct sunlight, for eg if you were displaying a dress in a spot where sunlight hits it often, but another thing girls often overlook is laundry -- if you hang your clothes outdoors, they're exposed to the sun and they will fade. The few hours of drying does add up over six years. So dry your clothes indoors/in shade instead, it helps to keep the colours from fading.
