Recent posts demonstrate that love of OTTness is fading in favor of regular, if dressy, coords. Some of the most popular coords posted to CoF this week have been very simple, with that one handmade JSK getting an amount of likes that used to only be given to theatrical OTT coords. We're seeing a return to the fundamentals of lolita fashion and it's encouraging.

Now if only everyone would stop calling nice but not-OTT coords "casual."

Building on this, I scrolled down (and down and down and down...) t8hrough the beginning of July to see how many coords had passed the 1,000 likes benchmark. Some things I noticed:

1. Getting over 1k is really fucking rare, like a once-a-month type event.
2. Photo composition and color correction matters as much as the coord itself does.

From left to right:

>Sept 10, 1k likes

Viewing them out of context of other coords from around those times probably doesn't leave the best impression, but from scrolling past so many fucking coords it seemed like between mid/late June to now, love for OTT was dwindling. And something else: August's "winner" is poised to overtake September's currently most-liked coord, because in less than 24 hours >>9191452 has accrued over 600 likes. Considering June's big hit was getting bumped into July (and thus would have been accruing likes for weeks), I'm betting that EGA coord takes the cake within a week.

To emphasize how rare it is to hit 1k likes: most decent coords without shitty photography got 100-150 likes. Good coords (or frankly gimmicky ones, which includes having a cat in the photo) seemed to average in the 200s, and very few got more than 500. If I was going to make brackets based on distribution it would be:

>Ita: <50 (5-10% of coords)
>Acceptable, or ita with redeeming features: 51-100 (maybe 20% of coords)
>Decent: 101-200 (30-35%)
>Good: 201-499 (30-35%)
>Extraordinarily good, or good with a gimmick: 500-799 (5%)
>Excellent: 800-999 (1%)
>Legendary: 1,000+ (<1%)

My math is shit and arbitrary. Just a rough sketch of my impressions scrolling back through the summer.

Another thing that supports my theory that the community is returning to basics? The growing number--and good execution of--boystyle coords.

Ouji rarely has prints, and EGA operates in an even more limited range of color. For these coords, without a gimmick to draw attention, fit and basic coordination matter a lot. When OTT Classic began its popularity, popular boystyle tended to be OTT ouji with big hats, buttcapes, crazy accessories and lots of layering. Now, ghostintheforest's recent CoF posts didn't hit it as big (in terms of likes) as some really basic but well-coordinated ouji.

If bad photo quality, barely 100 likes.

If good photo quality and mediocre coord, gimmickiness easily takes it up to around 200.

If the coord is actually good and the photograph composition is good and has been color-corrected so everything matches (or filtered for a dreamy effect), over 500 likes easy.

Just add a boyfriend and/or cat to the picture for extra gimmick points and you're looking at upwards of 700 likes.

But it would be too much of a clusterfuck to break 1k.

Beyond gimmicks, I do think the metrics for an average coord have a huge amount to do with photo quality and the number of lolita friends you have, like >>9191743 said.

Whether it's a popular substyle matters a lot too - if you could graph it I'm sure there'd be a U-shaped trend of likes:rarity of substyle. The most common styles are (obviously) popular, and rare substyles also rake in the likes as extreme rarity qualifies as a gimmick, but the in-between zone of mildly unpopular stuff can get under 100 likes easily even if it's a good coord.
