so as I promised in the other thread I wanted to talk about a little more serious topic (and after that I will dump pics)

The topic is: what makes a larp into a good larp?
Or to be more precise, how do we measure it?

I talked about this with a lot of people, and one of the problems is that you can enjoy yourself at a larp but the game could be still shit. You can enjoy the company of your friends while the rules are shit, the GMs are shit and the NPCs are shit, even the other players are shit too.
You can also feel shit in a good game, like you get all muddy and soaked while it isn't your thing. Or you just went to a game which wasn't for you. Or you managed to put an axe into your leg. Or someone took a shit in your campfire.
So we can safely cut that out of the equation.

What I came up as a definition for a good larp is something along the lines of "A larp is good if the organizers gives the most opportunity for enjoyment to their target audience"
Operating words are opportunity and target audience.
This means if the players doesn't use those opportunites the larp can still be considered good (although if they are unable to, though to the design of the game then it is obviously shit), and it's important that we are talking about the target audience. You can't make everyone happy so you should make the game for a specific target audience, no reason to cater every group.

Also it is important that when I say larp in this context I mean how it was put together. The rules, the logistics, the communications by the organizers, the story for it, etc. Not the actual event.
These are all mix together, especially the communication part which is very fucking important and some can be even objectively observed, like the rules system.

So, are there any interest for talking about this a little more in-depth?

I would like to tack something onto this.
As someone who has only played table top RPG's I have always been interested in LARPING.
However I have never done it for two reasons.
1. I am the type of person who overdoes shit. So if were to go on a LARP I would commit getting a outfit I really enjoyed wearing, armor I thought was badass with a full intention to look the part I intended to play. But the reason I can't bring myself to do that is that I am dreadfully afraid that I will be over dressed to the point where people will be like "You just joined no you can't be a knight."
2. This kinda deals with point 1, but I am also afraid of going to a LARP and finding its just a huge "clich" type situation. Where if your not in with any of the cool kids no one wants anything to do with you.
How prevalent in the Larp community are these things? or are my fears unfounded?

From a personal level, over doing it isnt really possible. players who show up looking boss as fuck as the best, brings so much more to game

You just cant come to game having done tons of amazing things ("I killed 3 dragons and am a lord and married to a princess"). Its totally fine to say all that shit. I played a character once that called himself the king of the forest. My outfit was definitely above the average there so a bunch of players listened to me and did what I told them. But its important to remember your adventure starts at game

From the clich thing. Yeah, that happens. But literally every game Ive been to has been noob friendly. While there always are shitters, find the cool people and hang tight

Lindybinge is just pulling things out of his ass half the time. The other half he is either correct or close to the truth which makes the false things even more dangerous as your average viewer won't know when is he talking bullshit and because he seen some true stuff he will assume everything else must be true too. Who wants to win free stuff?

The order of the bucket knight is one of nobility, honor and stolen kitchenware, and is something of a running gag for larpthread. Show us your best armour made of kitchen utensils, buckets and other "found objects", and you have a chance of winning the pictured items: One sealed reproduction deck of the 17th/18thC I. Hardy playing cards, a set of wooden dice, and a lovely bag for it all.

To enter, simply post your best bucket-knight costume, and email the same pic to screwloosecircus@gmail.com so I know who is who. The best gets the prize, with points for humor, realism (IE, is it using historic/larp themed items vs a tshirt and a plastic pasta strainers) and action/theme. Sadly, due to my educator's salary, I will be limiting this to US and Canadian entries only for now.

1. Do it. If you're a Europoor you'll fit in nicely, and if you're an American you'll blow some of the vets (possibly literally) out of the park. Even if the event has no standards or the likes, having a great costume is a must, if not just for yourself. It's half the fun of LARPing!
2. In America this might be a bit of a problem more than in Europe, but we got them here too. The easy way to deal with it is doing just a small bit of research, ask around on this thread and some others about the event you're attending. Furthermore, if even they're a little clique-y just step up to a clique member in the group on Facebook.
You don't have to outright tell him you're scared of falling off the boat, but just ask him if they're still looking, or maybe for a way to get an IC connection with them during downtime.

>>9294887
And how would we/you decide what makes a game filled with good opportunities? That'd need a pretty in-depth analysis, from a whole lot of sides. Because maybe you got a good amount of personal plot. But Davey from next camp over got shit and spent most of his event doing menial shit. You'd have to get a whole lot of people their review on the game to do it.
Maybe make a bit of a basic Google doc for it, and ask players to fill it in post-game.

none of them.
Well the string a little.
Mostly it's the horn and how tight the sring is on it so you vary a little by putting longer/shorter string on it but that's not an options with real crossbows for various reasons, though can work with larp crossbows (and of course you can put on elastic bands for larp crossbows too which is a different setup)
The wood only decides the draw length, which in reality should fit the length of the bolts.
And we measure the draw strength on the draw length so as you can see it's all tied together a little

>>9295194
This is purely "academic" or philosophical question for me, I don't think we can effectively measure games in a truly objective way because it has too many subjective stuff. That's why I try to cut out the subjective stuff from it as much as I can and see what's left.
The feedbacks while important for organizing viewpoint (because communication should be always a two-way thing) they can't tell how much opportunity was given to the players, only how much opportunity they realized. So this is mostly good for the organizer to see if his communication and setup was working or not outside of the drawing table

And yeah, lot of in-depth analysis is needed to truly know the answer BUT here is the thing: if some of the beforementioned things are missing we can safely assume that the larp is shit from an organizing viewpoint. Like if there is little to no communication between the players and the organizers. Or if the target audience isn't clearly defined, etc.
As I said this doesn't mean that the players can't enjoy it, but the concept of the game is flawed and there is a greater chance that sooner or later bad things will start to happen.
With not clearly defined AND communicated target audience there is a greater chance that someone goes to the larp that isn't for him. Maybe it's a game heavily about intrigue and doing detective work, but the guy excepted heavy fighting and such and likely he will be dissapointed.

Anyone ever make leather turn shoes?

Was going to make a pair, and I have 8/9 oz veg tan double shoulders to use for soles, but it occurred to me I also have some old busted sperry flip flops with thin soft rubber soles I could pull off.

Can't decide though if I should use them on my turn shoes. Would give better grip certainly and probably improve durability, but would they look like shit? Should be pretty innocuous I'd think and being translucent tan certainly would help, but still.

Either way, if I'm gonna do it, would be a hell of a lot easier to go ahead and attach it to the leather sole before sewing them up rather than fucking around with it after the fact.

pic related, want to make something like that or maybe the low cut shoe version.

Also boot or shoe? Which would be more versatile for medieval through early renaissance?

generally speaking if it's for a larp then no probelm in adding the rubber soles. Noone will give a fuck, and those who does can be called out as retards.

Haha that's kind of what I was thinking. As cool as boots are shoes are better suited to finery.

As far as others noticing I'm not worried, I just can't make up my own mind as to how I feel about it. But why should I care? The pros seem to massively outweigh the cons, the sole would be barely noticeable.

Depends, imo. With tattoos, as long as it's nothing obviously anachronistic you can sometimes pass it off as in-character (a barbarian with tribal tattoos, for instance). Same with piercings, like a Fantasy India culture having nose chains like the real thing. Hair is the least immersion-breaking imo, since it's easy enough to just say "in my setting this hair color is natural."

In general, I figure if there's no way to remove it, burden is on the player to play a character who can reasonably have those accessories without it being too out of place. It's tricky territory though.

>>9295056
Yeah, one of my eventual larp goals is to be able to make scrap clothing that looks good. Still haven't quite gotten there.

>Or if the target audience isn't clearly defined, etc.
I think the target audience is one of the most important parts, yeah. Because of how subjective larp quality can get, it's difficult if not impossible to measure a game's quality without knowing its target audience.

For example, most of us here would probably consider it good design for a larp to use little or no damage calls. But even that is subjective, because if the target audience is people who want to play a more relaxed game, there's good communication between the runners and the players, and the system is still organized so that new players aren't being shit on, then it might still be a good larp.

Hey guys, I need some ideas. I've started making chainmail, and it's awesome, but I want to start on some scale mail too.

But with the scale mail, I'd like to produce the scales myself. Anybody have any ideas on doing it cheaply and efficiently? And making sure they're safe, and won't razor the shit out of larp weapons?

I tried googling, but most guides I can find seem to be "order them online, then follow this guide".

>> No.9296331

>>9296327
I should mention that the few guides I did find were essentially telling me to cut each one from hand. While I definitely can do that, I'm worried that if I cut them all out with tin snips their edges will be sharp and stabby.

>> No.9296361

>>9296327
the problem with making scales by yourself is that it needs a lot of labor and you probably don't have the proper machines for it.
And yess you should edge all the scales by hand by a file or grinder or something.
Also scales work the best if you give them a slight curve, so it's not just a flat piece of metal. That's also requires a lot of work

>> No.9296376

>>9296361
Damn, I was afraid of that. It's sounding like I should focus on making my own chainmail, and just buy the scales.

Thanks for the reply man.

Cutting them takes time, but with a cut-off wheel is easy. Dishing them also takes time, a large domed head lag-bolt is perfect for the curve.

Buy a sheet of metal and have at.

So far it seems that the combo of Chestplate/some body armour+Open face helm is rocking.
Any inspo is good. What I know I want from my set is to be:
-Useful at large-scale battles
-Decent at duels (Archers can use S&B, Polearmers use... Well, polearms.)
-Being able to be both comical and serious, tends to comical.
-Using something you could look flashy and cool with.
-Won't be strange to look at without a full unit.

Currently I'm thinikng of a Spanish Halberdier dude but any suggestions are great.

Motherfucking Landsknecht

It's Landsknecht o'clock

You might think I'm saying landsknecht a lot because I have a landsknecht kit and I'm into landsknecht reenactment but truth to be told it's not that.
It's because landsknechte are awesome... and I have a landsknecht kit and so on.

Or if you don't feel like a cool enough dude to be a landsknecht then go grab a classy shirt, a good doublet (not necessearily arming doublet) 16th century armour, baggy pants that goes to the knee, some tight knee socks and done.
But don't forget to do it in bright colors.
And have a hat. Hat's are important. The most important thing in fact. Feathers are a must have too on hats, on helmets it's optional but recommended

That's only the case if either the polearm user is less skillfull than the shieldman, but in that case the weapon doesn't really matter, or if the game rules gives way too much advantage for the shield user.

>-Would a Landsknecht work with a weapon like a rapier as well? What do they use in off-battlefield time? I don't suppose they carry the Halberd everywhere.
Rapiers weren't really a thing for them as it's a civilian weapon and they were mercenaries. Proto-rapiers, cut and thrust swords and such are possible though. And the non-battlefield carries or sidearms were mostly katzbalgers and messers and falchions or other similar one handed blades more often than not the single edged stuff. Or firearms.
But there are paintings and even a few written sources where during the tavern brawl people started to beat each other with halberds and polearms. (also their main weapons were the pike and firearms, but you can't safely represent 4-5 meter long pikes in a larp)

Muh two-handed sword or a 1-'n-a-half handers.

Or simple shields and picks, etc.
It's not like they had a rulebook telling them not to use any weapons. (I think? And fuck, it's larp, you can do it anyway.) Just for big battles pikes are better.

Also reeeeeee on saying they get fucked by shields, you just suck.

>-What would a flashy Landsknecht fight like in a duel? Did they have champions or anything?
If you ask what would they bring to a duel then the answer is their friends. I mean the only unfair fight is the one you lost.
Champions they didn't had per see although there were hierarchy as they are basically a military organization (and I use the term very loosely here) and there were obviously veterans as in every such cases.
There were the döpplesoldners, every fanwankers favorite but contrary to popular belief there weren't the most badass ones. They got douple pay for the douple work. Usually they used two handed swords or halberds and their job was to do the crowd control and guarding the flanks and such stuff. Usually they had more armor than the rest because they had more money, and they really needed it because their job was more dangerous (and no, they weren't used to open up enemy pike formations)

Then there were the bodyguards of officers and stuff, they got even more money than the döpplesoldners, but they had to stick with the guarded persons. Can't remember right know their paygrade but I think it was somewhere around x5 than your average knecht, will look it up if it's important.

But if you want a real badass who is kind of a champion then there is the flag/standard bearer. Now THAT guy was choosen because he is a badass and can protect himself while holding the flag (plus he got a fuckton of bodyguard too) it was a job where you could easily die because the enemy liked to go after the flags. But if you were a veteran in that position that meant you are some ultra badass... or that your pals are really good at protecting you.

>If you ask what would they bring to a duel

Not nessecarily. I'll try explaining it better:
The fights here are mostly based on looking good while fighting and 'fighting like your character', so if you play an axe-wielding barbarian you'll have like wide swings and "RAWRGH"s. If you're some Swashbuckler you'll fight in a fencing stance, maybe hand in the air, on the hip or behind your back. What would a Landsknecht fight like? Did they have a specific HEMA manual style or something? Would they use their polearms to stab mostly or like a Kung Fu spear and such, like using it as a staff with a lethal end?

>> No.9296908

Excuse my french but that sounds totally gay. But sadly I know which school of thought that comes from...

Anyway german "fencing styles" as they were german. Like Talhoffer, Mair, Lecküchner, Lichtenauner, Meyer, etc.
I could get into details but for a larp probably that's more then enough.

You an an issue with people fighting as their character?
Why? Don't like people properly acting in character?
It promotes people really taking the role of the person they are pretending to be, in all aspects.
Seeing a savage orc all of a sudden start fencing as combat starts will look stupid as fuck (unless its part of the character)

>> No.9296924

>>9296917
my problem is what it usually means.
the axe wielding barbarian will grunt and telegraphs their movements from miles away and act like they are holding something that is at least 20 kg heavy instead of just a fucking axe.
The Swashbuckler will try to incorporate every move he seen on television, and probably from the bad ones.
I mean, fighting is fighting, if you fight like a retard you will die like a retard (with the exception if the rules promote fighting like a retard) On that note I totally hate the kind of fighting which goes on in the Drachenfest champion fights and arena fights in general. There are only a few people who can do it good but the majority doesn't

Also fencing does not mean exclusively the rapier gayness so a savage orc can totally do fencing.

Telegraphing barbarian isnt quite what Im talking about
More like, if you're a strong character, attack like your strong. Don't wind up 40 meters back, but use your strength in attacks. Attack in succession with little concern for defense.

I don't think savage orc should be fencing. I realize its not just the rapier but its more forms, waiting for an opening, proper combat as opposed to brutal fury
Little switches in style, while still fighting well, is important to representing your character

The thing is that there is few way to swing a sword effectively. It is true that different weapon are wielded differently by different culture, but when you take the same weapon with same property , let say a one handed saber, it's mostly the same shit everywhere.
And larp foam shit are quite limited in this regard.

A savage orc who has hema training and read "le jeu de la hache" could do cool and effective stuff, if his polearm was heavy and balanced, that he had the right to strike with the wood part, and to stab. If not, he is gimping himself for show. which is cool, we aren't here to winwinwin.

But most people will gimp themselves to make holywood tier retarded shit because they just don't know better.

If you outclass totaly your oponent, you may add fancy shit, but in this case you are just humiliating your opponent by gimping yourself.

Which is totaly cool in my book, but not something to do everytime.

Something that you can do, that cost nothing and is hard to fail would be your stance.

If you play a noble, or smug bastard, keep your posture high and upright, and favor some stance that look defensive or careless, as if your enemy is barely worthy of your attention.

>I don't think savage orc should be fencing. I realize its not just the rapier but its more forms, waiting for an opening, proper combat as opposed to brutal fury
Orcs can but brutally cunning not just cunningly brutal.
But it's part of the problem, people will quickly start to put others into stereotypes and then they "should" fight according to that.

And I say fuck that. You should fight what works with your chosen weapon. Obviously you have to consider how trained your character is with it but choosing a fighting style depends more on the weapon than on the lifestyle of the character.
BUT if you are a savage orc that doesn't know how to fight in any other way than from strength then obviously you will choose a weapon that is good for that. And hopefully you will do it right.

>>9296939
usually short as the system is trust based and it's easy to get incapacitated. While I wouldn't say there are much style in the fightings as most people did not learned how to fight but everyone tries to fight according to their weapons strong points. Which not always successful, because as I mentioned they just doing it by the ear, but at least it's not a tap dance and try to act like they are real weapons.

I am going to stop you for a minute:

Firstly, "fencing" should not be synonymous with rapier, small sword etc. Its simply refers to a standardized martial art system.

Secondly, "barbarians", like say, the Nordic peoples, undoubtedly had systems of combat for great axe, as we know that they have fencing systems for sword/shield, and spear, as well as standardized images of stances with axes. I would assume that a warrior-culture of orcs would pass on combat training long enough to build a cultured system of sorts.

Thirdly, all this landsknecht wank is laughable. Its more of a fashion culture of Germanic mercs, rather than a specific people. They would use whatever fencing systems they had access to.

funnily, most people didn't had access to fencing systems. I mean most of the hema fanwanking on how to do properly X or Y stuff was so far beyond the simple soldier that it's laughable

sadly, or luckily I don't think so. I still think that larp fights look terrible on video

Not first hand, but the concept of professional soldiers drilling and disseminating basic techniques is something that is regularly mentioned. Its like the military having someone who studied first hand, teach a unit second hand.

yeah, I meant the fencing masters stuff. the various master strokes and whatevers.
Probably they doesn't even used most of the guards consciously, although that sometimes even the masters couldn't agree on those so there is that.

I don't understand this fencing has nothing to do with rapier point. I get it.
I'm just saying that an unorganized group of savages while probably teaching fighting skills, probably didn't have organized martial art systems.
When I talked about orcs not fencing, I was trying to say that drilled combat techniques probably wouldn't be common in an orc's arsenal, because they are so physical strong, they would rely more on that then skill

And I did not know about the Nords have actual fencing systems. Do you have good place to read about them?

>When I talked about orcs not fencing, I was trying to say that drilled combat techniques probably wouldn't be common in an orc's arsenal, because they are so physical strong, they would rely more on that then skill
The problem is, if you rely solely on strength and nothing else you won't be effective. And if you are a warrior culture you can only be not effective if you won't be long lived either.
No matter what popular culture tells you using weapons solely by strength is not an effective way, and nobody who goes to kill other dudes want to be at a disadvantage

Ok, time for me to blow your mind.

The Maori have centuries old codified martial arts.

The Hawaiians have centuries old codified martial arts.

Most native American tribes have centuries old codified martial arts.

The African tribes still living in dung-hut on the Savannah? They have centuries old codified martial arts.

Most of these peoples lack a native written language, and yet they have organized, well documented combat skills and traditions that have survived and are systematically recognizable.

Why? Because as warrior cultures, that is possibly the single most important thing to their people.

One good thing to look for that is the bayonet drills.
Well documented in various nations, and only teach the most basic stuff, if you compare it to earlier writing on spear and polearm.

But seeing how in longsword , of all the techniques we learn, in sparring you mostly use the basics...

I guess that's enough.

well, the best technique in a battle is to gang bang on your enemy and have more armour than him. Also artillery and firearms.

I use a buckler in LARP fervently, and in short it boils down to getting fucked in most linefights.

But me being part of the town guard just made sure I could rek most lads in a 1-on-1 by getting in close and beating them into submission with my little club.

All in all it works great, and if you fight nicely, and don't run into too many spergs you can shieldbash with your buckler.
A tip I'd give you is to make it with that large extruding round part with a very thick foam layer. Don't make the shield wooden beside that, but make it more like a weapon.
I've slammed more people on their wrists or pushed away weapons aggressively and never got a complaint.

I prefer my knightly knights Roland/Arthurian style with naught but chain and some bits of plate because it's fantasy.

If I go later medieval times I just need a new pair of big girl panties when looking at the pikemen or reiter armours. And yeah, it might technically be knights that own some of the armours, but they don't have the 'knight' vibe if you get me.

So Spanish, German, etc. it is for me.

Yeah but a lot of those arts were, I don't want to say lost, but definitely misplaced with the introduction of firearms. For instance Samoa has always had a warrior culture and even originated the siva afi but I can't find many references to how they trained to fight or what techniques they used to fight and I've been looking hard so I can learn them to pass them onto my sons. It's actually quite frustrating.

If that makes you feel any better the majority of european martial arts pre-industrial era were also lost. HEMA tries to ressurect it with just a "few" broken fragments that were found. Most of the things that are going in HEMA are mostly educated guesses and experimental archeology
