How can I make a light-up sword like this with limited skill in electrical shit?

Best I can figure is to cut out a hollow blade from some clear plastic, and run a string of fairy lights through it.

>Best I can figure is to cut out a hollow blade from some clear plastic, and run a string of fairy lights through it.

that works fine. Sand the sheet on the inside before you glue it up to diffuse the light, and attach the fairy strings to a metal/wood/whatever (clear pipe would be best and just stuff them in there) rod that 'floats' in the middle of the blade.

Shitty MSpaint diagram but you know how on sleeping masks there are elastics on the side that go over your ears? Like that, and the bit that goes down can wrap around or something I don't know if putting the elastic there will actually work. Maybe double layer black chiffon if you want it to be opaque but still see through it.

Depends on what youre making. Individual parts use a box cutter and (dremel)sanding to make a smooth seal and sand down irregularities (most common), if youre trying to engrave a pattern, use a soldering iron. Power sander is great to make horns and other similar stuff from layered eva foam plates but goes too quickly through foam for anything else.

Lots of ways, look up how to rig a LED strip.

What I would do here is make it three layers, using alternating bits of sintra and plexiglass for the pattern, and with the electronics in a opening in the middle layer.

>>9380484
Sometimes, but it's primarily a problem with applying the primer on uncured glue, or vice versa.

>>9380373
Wood filler? What the fuck are you doing.

First off, if you're building a sword, why the hell are you using EVA to begin with? That stuff is terrible for swords. Either go with Polystyrene, or preferably, Sintra/PVC foam. That shit is the best for angular props like swords, AND accepts paint and texture easily and readily, while being incredibly sturdy for the weight.

I say scrap the project.

>>9380504
Depends, EVA foam is soft and flexible so you want to go at it with knives and saws. Treat it more as large sheets of really thick plastic fabric, rather than something to be carved.

>>9380520
I'd take them apart and sand the plastic and paint a pattern onto them, but you can try handpainting and stenciling if you're not good at electronics.

Or, you know, stickers.

>>9379636
>>9380528
You can certainly cast the crystals. However, here they look more like flat pieces, so you'd probably be better off with pieces of acrylic. Alternatively, due to the ambiguous nature of the material, I think even metallic strips or bits of foam painted reflectively could work here.

As for attaching acrylic/resin to cloth, it can be tricky but epoxy usually does the job fine. You can also cut openings onto the backs of the crystals, and sew them onto the outfit.

>>9380578
>>9380893
Just buy a dremel and some very thin drills, and an adapter. That's what I use, alongside a pin vise for when I need to make delicate, hand-drilled holes.

While I was in some Staples a week or two ago, I noticed they had this thing called hair chalk in a as-seen-on-TV section, comes with a few different colors. Given that it was in that section, that has me naturally doubting if it's even any good to begin with. To me it'd seem like the best of both the dye and wig worlds provided there was some made-to-order option where you can pick out a custom color like white or purple or anything else not already part of the pack. I think it was about $20 or so.
Have any gulls tried this so-called hair chalk? If so, how was it? Is it a total joke as its placement in an as-seen-on-TV section would imply, or is it actually something good?

Some proper cosplayers that do commissions have their own company registered, like me for example. If needed I use the company for official stuff like this, and usually they are aware of what NDA's are.

Hey, I have a few questions about 3d printing, if anyone with some experience or knowledge would like to help me out I'd be really grateful!

First of all, how much skill is required to create a piece? How much work do you have to put in? I'm not lazy, but I'm very bad at crafting and creating stuff in general

Secondly, I how much should I expect to cash out to get a decent printer? I know there are those who cost like $200 and up to like £2000, how much is reasonable, and how good does it have to be?

Lastly, how much do the materials that you use cost? It obviously depends on the size of what you're creating, but lets say like a gauntlet, how much material would I roughly need, and how much would that cost me?

Just glue seal it! literally just water down white glue, brush it on evenly and let it dry. same anon here, i would probably wear them and folded if i take public transit for example. I'm also planning a huge wing project but it's only for summer so it's still far away.

For the example posted i would use pvc pipes divided in two sections, splitting at the bend of the wings really, then use those pvc connecting pieces to build them together.
Alexa has a video where she shows how she makes sheets with real feathers to hide her mechanisms, in this case you can use it to ply them over your mechanism to connect the two parts of the fabric feathers. (see picture) and at the same time protect and transport your real feathers more carefully.

The big feathers are also a lot more durable than they seem, since theyre made with fabric. You'd prolly have to bend a couple back but thats about it.

My initial thought was the opaque black and I still think I like it the best but I'm worried that if I go that route people will just think I'm doing a shitty job of crossplaying instead of intentionally genderbending since it's so close to his original design.

Only way to guarentee fit and color is to buy one in person (hard to find) or make it yourself with dancer spandex

As for the rest you have to be really good at hand-painting if it's going to look right. But it's hard to make things that blurred and soft. Airbush is also preferred because it's not bulky and you don't want any paint stiffness or streaks on what is supposed to resemble skin.

>First of all, how much skill is required to create a piece? How much work do you have to put in? I'm not lazy, but I'm very bad at crafting and creating stuff in general
3D Printing takes just as much effort as other forms of crafting because you need to know how to model as well as craft, and model properly, meaning usually quads preferred if not tris, and all watertight. So you need that skill.
Pic related, prints dont come out smooth, they come out layered so you needa sand it down to smooth or use an acetone "bath"

>Secondly, I how much should I expect to cash out to get a decent printer?
The price will change depending on the size of the print bed. Desktop, cheap sized printers usually only have like a 10" by 10" print bed, meaning the maximum size you can print is 10x10x20ish inches, depending on the height of the printer. You want a large print bed for large props, and those printers are usually around 1000+

>Lastly, how much do the materials that you use cost?
You get the plastic filament in rolls. The rolls are around 40 bucks, and how much you can get out of it depends on how well you model/set up.
For example, a pyramid with the flat side down will use less filament than a pyramid pointy side down, because the pointy-side-down print will require "support material" (usually little strips of filament under stuff that overhangs the base size of the print) and support material will use up more filament.
So costs vary a LOT depending on how you model, what you model, and the effectiveness of your printing skills.

I recommend reading the pages on ShapeWays regarding details to think about before printing to familiarise yourself with some of the terms and issues before you run off and buy a printer.
3D printing is super satisfying though and I love using it for props that need to be super thin but sturdy or some props when I'm too lazy to sculpt. (I'm a 3D modeller by trade so it's super quick and easy for me.)

I really don't see how you'll be able to sew moss. If you're using real moss, moss isn't woven together like fabric is. You'll have to glue it to a base fabric, like muslin. Even glued on, it's still going to just fall off, no matter how well you have it glued down.

I'll take any suggestions, anything to make my little sister look as cute as possible, no pictures though. She has the bangs of Akko, same brown hair, and is about 4 foot something honestly I'd give more details if I were more comfortable but if you seagulls can help me id really appreciate it

Following what the other anons have said, your best bets are either dropping a ton of time into hunting through a ton of thrift stores for something kind of close or --

Do what my housemates and I did one Halloween, before I'd even started cosplaying "for real" and none of us had a sewing machine (ie fast hand-sewn single-wear costume)
>Buy 2-3 yards of blue fabric in the colour to match her dress and hat, buy a half-yard of red fabric for the hat band and belt.
>Have your sister lie on the fabric and, using chalk, trace around her upper torso in approximately the shape of the dress + sleeves. Leave about a hand's width between your chalk line and her actual body because she's a 3D person.
>Cut two of the dress shape, sew them together. Depending on your speed, expect to work 2-4 hours on hand-sewing.
>Look up a tutorial for how to make a wizard/witch hat. You'll use plastic canvas and a hot glue gun, which you can find at a craft store (you could probably substitute cardboard for the plastic canvas?).
>Your sister wears a white collared shirt underneath the dress, knots the belt around her waist/hips like a sash instead of finagling with a buckle, and wears knee-high boots in a coordinating/neutral colour (brown would work).
The dress won't fit ~perfectly~ (esp around the shoulders) and will err on the side of baggy, but the waist belt will help give some shape. She's 10 and will probably be more excited about dressing up as a favourite character over the Accuracy Or Die that is espoused here.

If your deadline is Halloween (instead of this week), this is a fantastic beginner sewing project -- for you or for her! Between now and Halloween, you should try to find a beginner sewing class that will teach you how to use a sewing machine and use a pattern. The place with sewing lessons will probably also let you rent/borrow machines by the hour.

This is basically an "A-line" dress with bell/lantern/kimono sleeves and a "V-neck." There's a similar pattern here if your sister is still this small: https://www.mychildhoodtreasures.com/products/bluebell-dress

I think the issue making it look like "armour" is that it's been sorta gradient-ed and stiffened so it sits in that bell shape.

I definitely think you could make it look cute and fae-like with some shimmery light material, but you'll need something to keep the shape if you want to have that bulb shape. I think some thin light wire around the hems might work.

Clear plastic works fine. If you want to diffuse the lights, throw in some paper to cover the back of the blade where the light will shine.

It'll still be see through on the outside, but not the inside. But that's fine, considering you want it to look like that.

>>9382814

Use inch thick EVA foam for both ends of the blade, you're going to sandwhich them between both between a slightly hallowed inner shell, where your PVC pipe will sit in. Blade sanding is going to be awkward unless you're patient enough with a dremel or a belt sander.

If you're uncomfortable with that, there's also Pink foam as well. But shoving a Dowel rod into one of those things is much easier if you've got a giant skewer or screw driver desu.

Also if you're using pink foam, learn how to seal it with wood glue or modge podge. It'll save you the grief of your weapon dying if you use aerosol spray paint.

The hilt on the other hand, yeah you can make that out of 3MM craft foam if you know how to make seams properly to get that shape.

It should be a good learning experience!

>>9383828
EVA foam isn't barrel like if you make your armor plate in seams and cut the halves at a 45 degree angle. Think of it as making a mountain or valley fold on pepakura. As to make the full armor, it really depends. Look at the back of Samurai armor or conquistador armor. ... or even, like a tank top. The back is always going to be shorter than the front, you'll just have to make one side attachable and the other side not, if that makes any sense.

Look into armor strapping and you'll get what I mean.

>>9384466
Lowes. Lights section.

>>9393486
Google Robocop Pepakura, or at least use pepakura EU. There's a pattern for the modern one, that should help alleviate your issue once you figure out how to scale it to your size.

Also, you'll have to use the push buttons from Joann's. The metal ones. Glue on Velcro will help too.
