I mean I've had this happen in super rural areas of Southeast Asia because they literally never see white people except in Hollywood movies, so kids get excited and want to take a picture with me so they can pretend they met Jennifer Lawrence. It really depends. I'm a plain American living in the city and people in Japan make comments all the time and some ask for pictures, especially if I'm dressed up. Everywhere I go I hear "cute", "beautiful", or "sexy" in Japanese, even though I know it's not true. They just have different standards and can't tell ugly foreigners apart. Koreans seem more vocal about this. Koreans do stand out because when they see you they're not embarrassed to turn around and stare at you directly. At least most Japanese people try to sneak a peek when they think you're not looking or they assume you don't know any Japanese.

That's what I thought too. I work in Kyoto, but travel around the local area and visit Tokyo occasionally. Tokyo itself isn't so big on pictures, but they talk about my foreignness like I can't hear them or stare. I travel there to see concerts and I've had bands spend way too much of their set staring at me as the sole foreigner at the show. I thought they'd be desensitized by now too. I lived in Tokyo as an exchange student and I want everyone to know this is complete bullshit. Like another anon said, 'white people aren't a novelty'. I was even out in the Tochigi prefecture for awhile and again; this doesn't happen because they know what a white person is, I met a lot of students that watched BBC news at home with subtitles. It really isn't. I spent a semester in Japan and the only people who got looks were my black friends and my 6'9 Mexican friend. Kyoto, Tokyo, and Osaka didn't give a fuck that half my group was white or that I was white when I traveled alone. As others mentioned already, it depends. When I visited Beijing last summer with a friend, she was asked for pictures at least 5 times a day. She is a natural blond and looks as European as it gets. Then again, maybe many of the people who wanted pictures were tourists as well, just visiting Beijing and originally coming from a part of China where white, blond people are a rarity.
