Reposting from old thread as it was posted after bump limit:

Would you class a print that's faded in the wash as minor damage or major damage on LM? Obviously I'd clearly declare it in the description. It's barely noticeable and even all over, which makes me think minor (I wouldn't have even noticed if I didn't have the matching headbow to compare), but the fact that the entire garment is faded makes me think major.

>> No.9443915

I bought it last year, wore and washed it once. It faded slightly after that one wash (it was Taobao, I'd be a bit more concerned if a brand print faded that quick). I'll declare as major just in case but fading isn't necessarily a sign of heavy use.

As someone who's fairly clueless about this stuff, is any non-japanese stuff acceptable for lolita wear/coords?

>> No.9444778

You can sometimes find non-brand pieces that can work with lolita but it's better to stick to actual lolita pieces until you know what to look for, otherwise you might waste time and money on stuff with full skirts or awkward collars and a bit of bad lace that you thought could work with lolita but in actuality doesn't suit the aesthetic at all.
TL;DR: It's possible when you know what you're doing. Not recommended for beginners at all.

depends on the specific dishes! i wouldn't use the dishwasher on some of their plastic plates because there's the risk of warping/rubbing off the designs. probably wouldn't eat hot food on the plastic plates either. handwash and eat sandwiches off of it or something and they will be fine.

but plates/mugs that are made out of ceramic get the same treatment as the rest of my dishes. i threw them in the dishwasher prior to use and they held up, which means they can withstand some heat. it's one of those things you just gotta determine yourself

so yeah, they're all usable, but you can't toss all of them in the dishwasher, can't microwave some of them, and probably shouldn't eat hot food off of others. this is the longest post i have ever made about dishes

Theoretically it’s nice to have a group that appreciates outfits that aren’t OTT everything-I-can-wear-at-once-plus-wig coords, and it’ll be nice to have coords with sleeveless cutsews, denim jackets and sneakers back again. But I equally don’t want to be in a group where people post colour-blind outfits, or just a jsk (and nothing else), or crocs and birkenstocks, or 3edgy5u bondage gear, whatever dumbassery because “lel it's casual lolita”.

In that sense I’m quite happy if members realise that cgl will still take them to task if they post 50 shades of nothing goes together or cheap-looking office blouses. I’m so tired of itas throwing “casual lolita” around everytime someone points out their shoes are too bright or why cutsews with jeggings isn’t lolita.

It was CoF, handful of years back. And once they were done with the "casual lolita" excuse they went on to invade the "otome" group. Easier to switch groups to avoid actually working on looking well put-together, it seems.

I cheated a little, the girl with bright green shoes (or socks? I forget) said she was doing otome, and therefore they didn't need to match because "otome isn't lolita". The rest were "casual lolita", though.

So it might be more like the newer stock image but because it's an older release it's probably best to err on the side of caution and look for more worn pics and recent reviews.

You can make things look good in a floordinate that would look like shit in real life, I used to do a lot of floordinates when coord planning and it's surprising how different a lot of them look worn. Not important at all. They're very popular but they're not the end all be all of lolita. Solid dresses can be just as over the top or great for dressing down and wearing regularly, depending on the piece.

The newer, (ala Starlight and beyond), tend to run bigger than the measurements listed on the Haenuli site, but the 1-2 size dress era either run true to size or smaller. (My St. Giles dress is definitely smaller than the measurements listed). Maybe if it's a common print you could wait more, but if nothing else you can keep it to trade for a smaller size later.

>>9447079
This, too. Even when lolita brands collab with an anime to produce anime-inspired dresses (like IW with Rozen Maiden) the dresses end up looking kinda weird. Stuff designed for animated characters rarely translates well to real life because everything gets simplified (e.g. large blocks of a single colour) and exaggerated (e.g. huge, gravity-defying ruffles), plus anime characters often have different proportions than real people. Something that looks elegant on a babyfaced Clamp character with noodle anatomy will likely look frumpy on a real person.

Watched an actually nice french lolita documentary from 2011 and I feel like I'm "late to the party".
Only could afford lolita/going to meetings/... in 2015 (but watched everything from afar since 2010) and I feel like all the super fun era is gone now. I saw another (cringy) one , still in french, and they were reading the storybook François Amoretti wrote about lolita fashion and it felt like it was released only a year ago when it's been 7 years'. I don't know anymore.

Also I would be ok with translating said first documentary if you wish.

Actually I would love to translate the book I talked about in my post, it's so dreamy. But I think it wouldn't be legal to do so. But it only exists in french and japanese and I would love to share it with english gulls and english friends.

"In the land of lolita"
Miwako (18yo) : Dressing in lolita gives me the impression to have the right of dreaming. There's a lot of elegance, it's fine, delicate, and the colors are vivid.

Nekotan (17yo): It's a representation of beauty for me. To me, you can't be lolita and have disheveled hair. You need to assume your clothes.

Kima (19yo): I don't what to say but it's just that I like it and that I please myself when I wear that kind of clothes and am with my friends

Josca (16yo): I can exist like I want because after all under the dress, with or without the dress, it's me and it'll always be me. But it allows me to feel good, the concept allows me to feel good. because lolita is also a concept.

Josca: What I mostly like is its "fresh" side with the flowers. And I like the two big bows here, it's beautiful and with that lace it's sumptuous.
And most of all, what's really researched in lolita dresses is the print.

Nekotan: And since every print is unique, every time a new one is released everyone is jumping on it and thus, if you really want it, you need to be there at the right place at the right time

Josca: A hairpin is very very rare, when they release a hairpin you need to jump on the occasion. Especially since hairpins aren't very common and they look differently on someone's head than a simple Alice Bow
Also, putting lots of things in your hair is OTT. It means having lots of things on you. I decorated this outfit with all the accessories I have like, for example, wearing gloves with lots of rings. But what I find to be good taste is having lots of things but not too much or else it looks -sorry to say that- it makes you look like a Christmas tree. Having just enough and not especially a huge lot is what good OTT is to me.

Nekotan: There,mom!
Mother: It suits you wonderfully. It's the next one you want if I understood?
Nekotan: Yes!
Mother: And the shape? Do you like it? That kind of shape is unusual.

Nekotan: At first, mom and dad were absolutely not ok with me wearing pink. They told me "It's no wearable, I mean, you can't wear a dress with ponies on it!"
Mother (Nathalie): I kinda took it slowly thinking it was more of a whim than anything but when I noticed that it really was important to her, that she felt better in those clothes than in the one we choosed together in other stores, well... we needed to invest a little in it, then a little more,...

Josca: And so, you were saying that the little dotted cardigan was...
Mother: In the end it actually looks funny!

Josca: Yes! I love lending my dresses but if some people don't want to I would understand, from fear of damaging them, but I like taking that risk. And even then, I lend to reliable people that I know very well, people that generally take care of their dresses. I know who I'm lending to, it's not as if I was lending to anyone

Nekotan: I don't lend to everyone. Because lolita costs a lot of money and telling yourself that by lending a dress, that you had a hard time getting, to someone who, in the end, doesn't care as much as us, will damage it...It kinda hurts my heart. Because, well, you had a hard time getting it and we care about it.

Nekotan: This one is at 290€ but Angelic Pretty dresses like the one I wore before are (about) 359€. Even if normally in Japan, it's like 100€

Josca: There are also websites where there are dresses that are at, for example, 35€, and they're way less expensive. It's almost the same type of quality except there are less fabric options, while here there are fabrics with different textures,...
What you can also do is going to websites specialized in second hand dresses.
Second hand is dresses that were already worn by people that want to resell it on the internet. But you need to be careful about the notice because on some websites, they have a notice where they tell you about the quality of the dress, the number of times (Nekotan) it has been worn,if it's damaged or not.

Nekotan&Josca: They always put pics to show you if there's a little stain of something, they circle it in red,...

Josca: So, after that, you have to be willing to want the dress despite her damages.

Josca: Everyone is dressed with dull colors like black, grey,... and it doesn't make me happy. When I go in the subway and wear pink, even if some people are going to criticize, at least, I'm sure that I bring some cheerfulness in that dull world.

Nekotan: I think that it's a style that looks doll-like, more "childish" and it matches with my way of thinking and who I am

Interviewer: Are you scared of growing up?
Nekotan: A little.
Interviewer: Why?
Nekotan: Because I don't want to have a lot of responsabilities like paying bills. I don't find that fun.

Josca: The world as it is now, doesn't allow us, being different, to take more freedom. Since the world was world, the Man must work to feed himself, the Man is must do this and that, needs to be conscious of other people, realize he's not alone,...Which makes it in a way that in the end people trapped themselves in one type of life, one type of person,in only one type; the type which is our opposite and is called "normal" which means with no differences, without being capable of having a real personality, without doing anything really attractive to them and tell themselves that they are "themselves"
(wew this part was super hard to translate and I made her sound like a huge special snowflake in the process. I guess what she clumsily tried to say was that some people nowadays are so used to following the norms that they don't really think by themselves anymore)

-Welcome to Josca's home-
Josca: What was difficult was talking to my parents about it. It's not exactly simple to come up to your parents and say "By the way, I would like to be lolita!"
At first they were quite surprised, and they kinda braked and said "In what kind of adventure are you getting us into?"
At first they looked at me funny because telling right to your parents, i mean you can't really tell them otherwise, that you wanna be lolita when you already have a "manga" style with pleated skirts and all of a sudden say you wanna change to be lolita...that surprised them.
I took one year to convince my parents by talking to them about it constantly.

Josca: This is something I love a lot which made me fall in love when i saw it. It's a phone case.

Interviewer: It's a little imposing

Josca: Yes but it's so cute. I rarely use it as a phone case, I usually clip it on my bag. What I like a lot about it is the little face of the bunny.

Josca: The lolita's soul is the soul of gaiety. it's a soul different from all of the other souls, it's the soul of the "little girl" in yourself, the soul of feminity, of finding beauty in things, of romantism,...Of everything the world has lost to us.
I don't only count lolitas that have dresses, I also count lolitas that are lolita in the soul, who are discreet,at home, and dream to be like us.

-Welcome to Château de Breteuil-

Josca's Mother:I didn't even know about that movement, I didn't even know about the dresses.. I didn't know anything. She showed it to me 2 years ago. It made me laugh, I found them a bit...ridiculous. But by seeing them again and again, seeing the dresses, pretty things that are well made, well sewn,... I admitted it was pretty, not on everyone, but it's pretty when it's well worn. But you have to know about it, be into it,... It's like everything else; By seeing it again and again. Like when you listen to a music passing at the radio, at first you don't like it, they pass it again and again and at the end you find it cool and you buy it. It's kinda the same thing

Miwako's Mother: At first I had trouble getting used to it. Some outfits are kinda exuberant. But I'm here today, to make her happy,. And I tell myself it's not a bad movement, they're nice , they're girls that wander around in dresses that aren't ugly, they drink tea, eat little cakes,...It's not a dangerous movement so, well.

Interviewer: Now they're still teens but what if it continues?

Miwako's mother: We'll see!

Interviewer: Will you still tolerate it as much?

Miwako's Mother: Well I think she should, it's my point of view, I think she should change, but I think she'll change by herself the day where...she gets married, has kids,... Or maybe she'll stay this way and introduce her lifestyle to her kids, her husband,..
But I'll always tolerate it. It's my daughter so I'll tolerate.

Miwako: People find me weird compared to her (Josca). But we're the same. We both come to school dressed "normally", well, "normally", what's normality?

Some girl in the background: To me there's no "norm"!

Miwako: To me, being "normal" is being who you are inside, dress the way you want,.. as long as we like it it stays "normal". There's not a special style called "normal" and all the others are called "weird". Normality is what we are ourselves and not what others want us to be.

Josca: Unfortunately there are a lot of people who are complexed by their appearance or mentally or that were belittled too much and they can't understand. People always need to be with "the others" in hope to feel better, to say "Yes, I have friends". But that's not what life is. When you are yourself, you see life differently, you see it from your point of view, and not from"the others"'s point of view.

Nekotan: They know they're unhappy so they tell themselves "other people must be like that too!"

Josca's mother: A style really doesn't hurt anybody. Everyone could be able to wear what they want and tell yourself "i'll buy that because everyone wears that" ,in a way, it's being scared of being different, scared of people judging. But I'm sure that at least 50% of people wouldn't want to be dressed the way they are. That they are sad about it but they don't dare. And when they see lolitas they'll compliment them, because in a way they're kinda "envious".

Nekotan: It's a fear of asserting themselves

Josca's mother: Exactly. The other ones are complexed, and when they see lolitas they feel bad they feel ashamed for them. And since they feel ashamed for them they take the shame for themselves and they become aggressive

Josca: If we were self conscious we would be really discrete and we wouldn't dare to show ourselves in public in colorful dresses, exposed to people and their remarks. Like, for example the remarks we have is that this style is very..."look at me". Sure, you can say it looks this way even if it's not our intention, but if I was really feeling self conscious I would probably dress in black, with discrete things, and hide in a corner.

Miwako's BF: When we are together in the street she's rarely dressed in lolita because it's not always easy because people stare. But I entirely assume being with her when she's dressed like this in public.

Interviewer: And how does your surroundings see her?

Miwako's BF: My family accept it just as it is.

Interviewer: And what do your friends say?

Miwako's BF: They say "don't you find it weird she dresses like that?" or "did you know she dress like that" and I say that yes, that I know it and don't care. And if they're not happy about it it's the same thing.

Josca: We don't have to force ourselves to be something else than what we are just to please people, people we don't know, that aren't our parents,family,.. That'll never talk to us and that don't have a word to say on what we should do of our lives. Life is long so we need to profit and make it nice and not waste it.

(just noticed one of the photographer was repeating "you are sublime")

Interviewer: What does it feel like to be stopped constantly by photographs?

Miwako: It's kinda embarassing. But it's true that often, when we go to Paris, we stop for that and sometimes it lasts 10,20 minutes or more because more people stop again and again to take pics and they say "Oh please just two minutes we want to take a pic!". So sometimes it's cumbersome but ah well.

Nekotan: We don't do that to be noticed, and sometimes when you're in a hurry well...And sometimes they don't even ask permission and we feel like circus freaks.

(mother and photograph "arguing" a bit, the photograph excuse himself and the mother says it's alright)

Interviewer: Aren't you scared about your picture getting deflected(not sure if it's the right word)

Nekotan:Yes, often. And I never see the pictures in the end so it's kinda scary but what can we do besides posing or go away? There's not a lot we can do. And even if we tell them no they consider they're right anyway because we're dressed flashy. They don't wanna hear anything or admit they're wrong.

-A big family-

Josca: I'm going to introduce you my several sisters reunited here. To begin, I'll introduce you to Loliz, my big sister.

Loliz: Hello!

Josca: It can have different significations: you can be sister with another lolita if we share a fraternal link or simply because it's a great friend but also because some of us need advice,to be guided in lolita,... And also know some things that you don't know when you just began.

Loliz 31yo: ("oooh mistress!") She's really my little sister, the little sister I wish I had. There's the sharing we have in between sisters, like when you share the same passion, and I get along with her family, her parents,... I come to at her place sometimes. I maybe feel the need to protect her from the viciousness of some girls and...

Interviewer: Does it exist?

Loliz: Unfortunately yes, Josca is attacked quite a lot but well.

Josca: And there, is my sister "Miwako", she's my "twin sister".
(n.b i remember that back then, the "sister" system was present quite a lot in the french community, even more than in america it seems)

Miwako: A twin sister is someone who's always there for you and who guides you when you make mistakes. Josca is always there to put some light in my life. Every wednesday she would come over for Spanish lessons and everytime it made me happy for the week. And if I need someone to talk to or if I need help for something she'll be there.
Seeing her gives me confidence.

Nekotan: Tea parties are always grandiose, that's also why we don't want to miss them.

Josca: It's an extremely prestigious event, not everyone can especially attend it. It's an honor to attend it because we're always in fabulous decors. it's also a way to meet our correspondants and talk about our experience in lolita and have a good time!

But sometimes you need to put yourself in a bubble and not listen to what the others say and continue to live our passion with our friends that are true and sincere.

-The surprise guest, Aoki Misako, kawaii ambassador, dedicate her book-

Josca: There, I'm waiting in line, as you can see the line is huge, to get a dedicace and a picture with Aoki Misako! It's a lolita icon and also a known Baby model. And for me she's kindness incarnated.

(I noticed Misako said "merci" which means "thank you" in french)

I own the crown pair, actually a little while ago was eyeing the same two for needing the exact same kind of thing, ended up getting the crowns because I wear a bit more gothic, haha. I can try and take pics tomorrow hopefully if you'd like, dead of night here and my lighting is awful.

For an idea/reference of how they fit/stretch, I'm 116 lbs, 5'4", 92cm hip, and honestly should lose some weight in my legs, or at least IW socks/tights make me feel like that. My legs stretching out the print more makes the stripes much more obvious than the sample photos, and the crowns a little less stark. Honestly they're really nice though and not as sheer as some IW tights are on me, my skintone doesn't start peeking through until upper thigh, a tiny bit in the knee area.

If you haven't found it yet, they're worn with the British Crown Lace Jumperskirt on the website. Fairly accurate to how they are IRL, I just really feel the vertical stripes are more obvious in person. Not a bad thing though, breaks up the starkness of the ivory.

Thanks! I managed to find all the worn pics on the website but IW are selling so many long-length dresses at the moment that you only end up with a small flash of the tights, which isn't that helpful in deciding. Pic related. I'm leaning towards crown pattern because it matches slightly more things, but those things are mostly dresses that I already own legwear to match, whereas the floral tights would match a couple of dresses that don't match any other print tights in my wardrobe.

it only looks to be about 25-30 dresses/skirts, which isn't really that much. the design of the wardrobe itself is nice though, if that's what you meant. she makes me want to clean my room.

The "death of harajuku/jfashion" threads and the ones about the G&LB closing are down, but since people were arguing in those whether it was a sign lolita was dying or just that altfashion and print magazines were struggling globally I thought people might be interested in this:
http://gothic-charm-school.com/charm/?p=1104

Basically just a goth complaining about the exact same thing, saying their scene is dead and the magazines are closing and things aren't like they were in the good old days. It seems familiar.

Oh my i miss when sweet lolita looked like this. The time just before OTT was wonderful. I need to start wearing stickers in my face too, so weird and cute.

I bought a dress on auction from 2007 and there a bit of stains in the front.
Im trying to remove the stains with dish soap, baking soda and vinegar to no avail. Anyone else have any other ideas for stain removal?

Look at the wardrobe in the video anon. I used to be in the french comm and this girl had two closets and then had a full dressing room because of how much stuff she had. (her parents were loaded, which is partially why "Josca" was often attacked on the internet)

I was going to ask this in the SS thread but it appears to have died.

I bought a bag on mercari about a week and a half ago via Japonica but it hasn't been shipped yet. Japonica are trying to chase it up but I just wondered about what happens if Japonica don't receive the item/a refund.
Will I just lose the money?

If it's not a light area next to a red/dark area, make a paste of oxyclean powder. Apply directly to the stain. Put a damp cotton ball over it to keep it damp. Wait 30min or so and rinse. You can also dampen the area and lay it in the sun.

Yeah, except people were talking about a teenage girl who really did have everything bought for her by her parents. There's no need to take everything personally and get defensive.

Is it bad to wear replica shoes if your feet are too big for normal brand shoes? I bought a pair of shoes a while back and just found out they were IW replicas.

just because someone's parents are loaded, it doesn't automatically mean they were buying her dresses.
