Old thread's OP image broke during the 4chan glitch and thread approached autosage >>9322411

This thread is for ouji and aristocrat (aka "boystyle") discussion. "Boystyle" is shorthand for "boystyle lolita" and refers to the masculine counterparts of lolita and, often, aristocrat fashions. There is a lot of overlap between these styles, and different people use different terms to describe them. So, consider this a thread for those whose style is on the right half of Buttcape's Lolita Family Triangle: http://www.kawacura.com/moripress/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/0dmmLH6-350x350.jpg

I really don't think it works well with ouji. The images posted just don't really say ouji to me and more regular jfashion since it's so much more girlie. that one is a bit classic, imo, a sort of blend maybe. feminine does not always equate to sweet, much as with lolita. sometimes it helps to imagine the coord with a skirt instead of pants to see where it might fall. unfortunately, that is a distinction not even all lolitas can agree on

but fortunately, labels are fluid. mixing things up is fine, and the boundaries between substyles can overlap.

here is a manly-man's cut in ouji style, though as pointed out by Gropey, this man's custom works tend to be too boxy and a bit shapeless. but drawing from the Rococo/Georgian era or another men's fashion template does something interesting to sweet coords, pushing them out of the moe-shoujo sweet look of pumpkin pants

Yea, his stuff is rather boxy. Nonetheless he makes the brighter colors work because of the length of the pants and other more elegant styling. Ouji in general needs more colorful options.

It's pretty good. Like, the fabric is not aatp or Boz level, but I haven't had any issues with it coming apart or the buttons falling off (looking at you, aatp). Basically Putumayo is usually meant to be worn a bit more casually, and the materials reflect that. Fabric is less stiff, but wrinkles a bit easier in my experience. If you actually read the OP, they literally say that they are different styles, but there is a lot of overlap between them. There is also typically not enough interest in masculine aristocrat to warrant it getting it's own thread.

I've started femme Aristocrat threads but those usually fade out fairly quickly sadly again due to lack of interest, mainly due to it not having many wearers. It might be worth trying to start an Aristocrat general for femme and homme evrsions?

part of the problem is Aristocrat has no brand presence outside Moitie, which itself has dwindled to almost nothing. the way the west defines aristo is not that compatible with Japanese websites and social media, so finding more inspo is difficult - Aristocrat as the West uses it is not a living fashion in Japan.

HOWEVER, labels are fluid and language changes and even if it is not a "cousin of lolita" in Japan, it is too entrenched as a pseudo-jfashion in the West to just handwave away the way we do with kodona and dandy and even sometimes otome. and i have been gathering a heck of a lot of photos and screenshots for the fashion styles/themes the West calls aristocrat, just to explore what labels Japanese use for them, to expand the knowledge base of the western comm and to give aristocrats search terms that may be more likely to turn up results on Japanese sites, or help make their perusal of GLBs/KERAs more interesting.

i think you & i have talked circles around the topic (if you are the same poster who usually does aristo threads), and my concern is still that the majority of those who use the aristo label do it to re-classify coords that would, in Japan, be considered lolita or ouji, and place them into a more respectable category. it perpetuates stereotypes about ouji especially, infantalizing the fashion while setting aristocrat up as the "mature, masculine" ideal.

that bugs the shit out of me.

if it weren't for that--if the western community had gathered a different set of coords to represent "aristocrat" with than ones that are literally labelled ouji in the original source material--if it was closer to >>9458952 or had its own distinguishing characteristics--it would be great to have its own thread. but most people use "aristocrat" to mean "ouji that doesn't threaten male ego." it is more of a substyle or theme of ouji than it resembles what Mana envisioned.

>> No.9481232

>>9480897
back when we did the poll about splitting, homme aristo wearers preferred to stay in /ouG/, mostly because when you get down to it the styles and brands are the same. a thread specifically for Japanese gothic might have a broader appeal, but gothic threads in general tend to limp along.

i have a dump ready for "heavy gothic" inspo (h. Naoto Blood, alice auaa, Stigmata; stuff Shiratama tends to wear) that could be repurposed for an EGA-like thread without cannibalizing ouji.

that is because a lot of people use aristocrat to mean ouji with pants or lolita with a tea-length, or longer, skirt.

however, no matter how you define aristo, there will be overlap. even a coord branded by Mana himself, like pic related, can meet the qualifications for ouji. to me, the difference is in how it is styled. ouji tends to have a fresh-faced, minimal or "no makeup" makeup, with hair that is well coiffed and managed but not extreme. EGA has a more gothic/visual and sensual manner of styling, which is often reflected in its draping layers, asymmetrical cuts, and vampy makeup. arisrocrat silhouettes tend to be more modern & mature, in that they may flow with the body's contours, use leather or pleather corsets and harnesses, and long cutsews or overskirts that sort of blur the division between layers.

you could think of EGA as visual ouji, maybe

when ouji adds more layers, the differences can become clearer. ouji usually uses items that are sort of thick or structured, unlike Moitie's usually flowy EGA items. in the coord on the right, there is a blockiness to the layers, where they are clearly distinct from each other. there is also more of a fantasy, pseudo-historic (like an anime version of historic Europe) look, compared to the glam-vampire look of much of EGA.

pic related is an example of an ouji coord that would be considered aristocrat by the west, since the west has redefined aristo to mean "mature, more historically inspired ouji." that distinction is a fabrication the same as "kodona" was, though.

even though this image is labelled ouji, i have seen a cropped version of it used to explain aristocrat.

this image of Akira (on the right) is another coord labelled ouji which is cropped and used as an example of aristocrat. this is the other kind of look the west imagines aristocrat to be, the standard jacket+(faux)vest+pants formula with or without jabot.

it would be like if Mary Magdalene coords were considered something different from lolita because they were nothing like the often fanciful/glitzy AP or BTSSB. the more classic or mature ouji coords got reshuffled under the "arisrocrat" umbrella for mostly arbitrary reasons, which i will not speculate on at this time.

in my opinion, whether you classify a coord as ouji or aristocrat is not due to some easily identifiable essence of either style, but your own affiliation with or exposure to different schools of thought about what boystyle lolita is. except in cases where there are puffy shorts or extravagent cutsews involved, you can use either label for what you wear and probably develop a reasonably good argument to defend your position. or you can just call it boystyle lolita and skip the debate.

So /ouG/ what kind of basic information do you think belongs in how to ouji video?

>> No.9482349

>>9482274
what to call it: not kodona or dandy, boystyle lolita is fine, aristocrat is sometimes a synonym or substyle or unrelated depending on who you talk to

what it is: a unisex fashion meant to be the male version of lolita. follows similar rules about coordination and body coverage. kind of fairy tale/anime Europe fashion. ouji-kei is mentioned in the first Gothic and Lolita Bibles and is generally treated as a companion or mirror of lolita, usually taking a backseat to it.

what to wear: minimum is blouse and bottoms and legwear and shoes with styled hair and clean, fresh face. usually a vest and neckwear is added. sometimes jacket and hat.

where to buy what to wear: brand is best because modern shirts and shorts do not have the right silhouette or fanciful little touches. can get away with offbrand sometimes but it needs to be well-shaped, good quality, etc. secondhand is cheap. if you are bigger than the average Japanese slender adult, you may have to go to Fan+Friend, taobao, or Western brands that make ouji such as Ikemen Mode or Elegy. there are fewer options than lolita even though most ouji is made by brands that also make lolita and things like blouses, vests, jackets, etc. can be worn in a coord for either style.

optional stuff, maybe covered in 102 video:

historic inspiration: mostly rococo menswear and victorian boys and menswear, but also a LOT of Napoleonic menswear influence as well as Edwardian and straightup anime/JRPG, especially for hair styles. and all of this is in a more modern cut

substyles: literally the exact same as lolita (see beginning of thread for some examples)

where to wear besides just by your badself: joining a comm, attending meetups, alternative fashion events and conferences, anime or comic or pop culture conventions that have an alternative or jfash presence

where to find more info: bloggers like Buttcape, Deerstalker ouji videos, other vloggers you recommend, etc.

>I know when it comes to fashion like this a lot of information is based on speculation and opinions
yes! and when it is presented as a kind of canon, wherein the speculator claims or implies their opinion is how it is truly done in Japan, it influences people who feel less experienced or who cannot access source information. since those who had the GLBs often only shared fragments of them to the public in order to encourage people to buy them, the culture was significantly shaped by the tastes and opinions of a small number of people. for ouji, this meant a scarcity of information that led to people more or less making things up to fill in the knowledge gaps.

and resulted in things like coords called literally "butler style" (inspired by Kuroshitsuji) being cropped and shared as an example of "aristocrat." which is the funniest "lost in translation" example i have found so far.

I guiltily admit to often using 'aristocrat' as a style label as sadly it's often the easiest way to communicate certain looks as they are perceived outside of Japan, especially seeing as well known figures as such buttcape and iiralina use the terms. I know it self-perpetuates things, but at the same time, I do acknowledge that what's often labelled as male aristocrat falls under ouji. It's a commication thing.

>> No.9484046

Urgh, heavens no. I can see why this viewing of the more elegant aspects of feminine jgoth and ouji have been joined together as a single style in the eyes of some, especially if you look at the male and female versions of pieces released by the likes of Moitie and Boz that would fall under these sorts of brackets, even if by the Japanese scene's eyes they haven't been. The masculine and feminine versions of pieces can look a lot alike, and it can be very convenient (and like you say, 'easier') to label them under one style, that's become known to many as 'aristocrat fashion'. Especially so if you say, put together two outfits, near identicaly styled, with the same makeup, accessories, blouse, jacket, etc, but where the only differences is one will be styled with long pants as an ouji outfit, while the other outfit swaps the pants out for a skirt or dress, which would put it under a different style label. You can see why under such circustances the looks can be put together as the masculine and feminine variants of one style, in this case, 'aristocrat'.

What is much more incorrect is to label these looks as EGA, as that's specifically Moitie's clothing line. You can still see why it's mislabelled though, especially if a non-fan of the specific brands might not be able to tell the individual brands' pieces apart.

>> No.9484749

We've already established the 'difference' between ouji and aristocrat so I don't quite get the context of your post.
I said it's understandable because when I've had people ask what I'm wearing they're usually just more confused when I say "ouji" because then I have to elaborate by saying it's a Japanese fashion or it's related to lolita which opens a whole other can of worms. I'm patient and don't mind most of the time, but I know if I said something along the lines of "aristocrat" or "kind of like neo Victorian" those random people on the street who don't really care would just move on.
It's like the people who wear lolita that tell randos they're wearing EGL or "Alice style".

No general masculine jfash thread so I'm going to have to ask here: is there any Western second-hand market for MILKBOY stuff at all? I've checked keimarket, depop, eBay and all come up with nothing.

There's a T-shirt I want up on auctions but it's not in my size and I'm worried it'll be way too big - in a cute/cool oversized way, just in a way that'd wreck the print by making it impossible to read the text properly. It's pretty hard for me to figure out how things would fit on me since they only show sizing on male models on their website and the girls who post MILKBOY coords to wear.jp never list the size they're wearing. I'm worried about buying something I won't be able to sell if it doesn't fit (it's not cheap enough for me to just donate). I know some people like their pastel stuff and I could probably sell their more modern vaporwave-looking shit to people that weren't into jfash but I've no idea if there's any market for their older/simpler designs.

Pic semi-unrelated, an example of some of the stuff they used to sell way back when.

there is no MILKBOY Western market but imo there should be, their designs are copied enough. are you involved in a local comm? if you cannot offload it via usual channels, people impulse-buy at swap meets pretty often

>> No.9522946

>>9522923
Thanks. I am in a comm but I know none of the girls there are interested in that kind of style. I expected there to be a Facebook sales group for MILK like there are groups for a lot of other jfash brands but I couldn't find one.

I don't really like MILKBOY's recent direction but I have a few guy friends that are /mu/ types and when they saw it they really, really liked it. There are definitely enough guys in the West that like that sort of style to support it - it'd be interesting if they promoted their designs abroad but I guess the price is too high for the quality for it to sell well. At least with MILK there's a bit more that goes into the construction and the designs are more unique so buying first-hand can seem worthwhile, but so much of the MILKBOY line is $100 T-shirts that I never buy anything from them new. Then again, guys pay over $100 for Supreme T-shirts so maybe if it was marketed right it could work...

Are shoes with thin heels too effeminate or out of place looking for ouji? I noticed in most photos that a lot of people have the chunky heels associated with gothic or wear boots.

iirc Ikemen Mode started out as self-made for ouji because the boyfriend also didn't quite fit Japanese size ouji.

I should warn you you're getting into a hobby with a lot of dress nerds and detailed-oriented, picky people. By "self-made ouji" what you really need is "well-tailored stuff sewn by someone who seems to actually know what they're doing" and not "babby's first cosplay". The first will get you a lot of admirers. The second -- well, don't bother showing up unless you enjoy being gently ostracised.

top right is NOT explicitly called ouji that i can see, but the frilly necktie with the neat little hat help somewhat loli-fy the jumpsuit of this punk coord. accessory details like that could help make Teddy Motors worthy of any prince-who-works-on-his-own-cars-while-moonlighting-in-a-biker-gang

the Air Force one is NOT ouji, but i want to include it so you can see what a non-ouji military-punk style coord might look like. it is still glam but it does not have those anachronistic/fanciful frills that >>9579318 has (the one i decided is actually ouji even if not labelled explocitly as such). or just compare to the Army/Navy. when lolita brands release this kind of uniform-inspired stuff for their boystyle coords, it can be difficult to figure how they fit into the ouji aesthetic, but when you look at a coord in the same genre (punk-military) WITHOUT the ouji influence, i feel like you can get an idea of what the ouji flavor brings to the mix of styles.

finally Akira in an AatP jumpsuit

i think accessories and styling matter most. these jumpsuits are just salopettes you do not need a blouse for, the "OP" for oujis, usually worn in a punkish style. Teddy Motors's biggest issue may be its long sleeves and pants: it covers the WHOLE BODY so accessories are key. but i think we have all seen ouji coords with individual elements of TM: long, loose pants (esp. with AatP), no defined waist (not uncommon with salos or overalls), simplistic design, etc. these individual issues add up for a challening item.

i do not think TM was intended for ouji but i think it is possible.

long and short pants
nice shoes
simple blouse
fitted vest/waistcoat
snazzy socks & neckwear (can have variety with just a collection of these + above basics)
decent hat
fresh face
full hair

the latter 2 are where a lot of otherwise ok Western oujis fail. if your hat completely hides your hair, the coord is unbalanced. grow it out or wig it up gulls
