Lifestyle thread?

What do you consider the requirements or tenants of 'lifestyle" lolita? Are there any particular hobbies or activities that you think lend themselves to lifestyle? Are you a lifestyle lolita, or have you ever thought about trying it out?

People who are lolita (have lolita as their main clothing style and don't wear something else unless necessary)

>> No.9488558

Do people even really practice lifestyle lolita anymore on any broader scale? Maybe it's because the community is fractured since EGL died but I hardly see people who claim to be lifestyle now. Then again, I also rarely see people who wear lolita daily like people used to, versus coordinates for special occasions

In EGL's heyday, lifestyle was typically defined as someone who

-Wore lolita regularly (every day if possible, with exceptions for situations where they couldn't wear it)
-Subscribed to the idea of Lolitas being polite, reserved, feminine, as promoted in some of the essays in GLB
-Had hobbies that were considered refined/feminine/polite, like embroidery, reading classic literature, etc

People who wear lolita often don't feel like posting their coords unless they want to be efamous or went to an event. Think about it, anyone who posts every week becomes known in the community whether it's good or bad. Some of those GLB articles were obviously jokes. The last thing you listed are normal things to like for any lolita.

>Some of those GLB articles were obviously jokes. The last thing you listed are normal things to like for any lolita.

That's nice. That doesn't change what people considered lifestyle lolita back in the day.

I wear lolita daily but I usually don't bother taking pics, not to mention post them online. Quite a few gulls say they'd love to see more daily lolitas and wearable coords but in actuality coords like that don't get any attention when posted so it feels a bit pointless. Not that I mind, I wear my frills for myself, but that could be one reason why you don't see it often.

now I'm reminded of that "Quaintrelle" movement Vivcore tried to start but abandoned after it didn't garner a lot of attention. A similar concept to lifestyle lolita, except it focused on historical fashions and historical lifestyle aspects. There are some people who do attempt a historical lifestyle to varying degrees, although offhand I can only think of quirky/insane people who try to make it their full lifestyle like the "Victorian era" couple.

I think the community shift from livejournal to tumblr/instagram/social media has made it harder for people just to post daily lolita outfits. With livejournal we specifically had daily_lolita for... daily lolita outfits, so people who posted and lurked and commented were in it for daily outfits, but on social media people only really care about the outfits and photos that jump out, so it feels pointless to post them most of the time.

>> No.9489992

>>9488558
It's not as relevant, no, and I think it's a result of the evolution of the fashion since EGL dwindled and Tumblr and other personal social media pages became the norm versus a forum/community environment.

>> No.9490070

I think tolerance for things like strong enthusiasm, eagerness and effort in talking about lolita lifestyle has decreased a lot, so that unless it's perfectly aesthetic the whole idea comes across as cringeworthy. The community used to overlook it pretty readily but I think now, if the 'seams are showing' or someone has too much to say about themself and their efforts, it's really looked down upon. Maybe that's just my personal perception of how my own view point changed since early on but I don't think I'm alone with that. With the community so decentralized, blogging etc seems a lot more public and not as intimate and 'secret club' like, so the standards for what seems embarrassing has also changed

There's a bunch of places selling these kinds of blooming flower tea, which always struck me as being very lolita-like. They actually do take a few minutes to properly bloom and open out fully, and they look best in a glass cup, the fussiness is what makes it seem more lolita-lifestyler to me.

The only thing problem is finding a pretty one with a nice scent. A local cafe has this one beautiful blooming tea with a beautiful scent, but they won't tell me what brand it is. Thus, alas, I continue on my quest for a blooming tea blend that appeals to both my eyes and nose.

To me a lifestyle Lolita is someone whose primary wardrobe is their Lolita. The aesthetic does extend outward in some capacity in their life. I define that as their living space is inspired by the aesthetic of their wardrobe; they have a frilly bedroom. But it is also inclusive of interests that would be open opportunities to enjoy Lolita. Maybe they like ballet or they collect feminine BJD. It doesn't have to include tea, as some just are not interested in the nuances of tea as a hobby. It may mean an appreciation for fine pastries or other sweets.

Personally, I do appreciate seeing some balance in a lifestyler. Not to edgelord status, but just enough so it isn't too extreme. Psychologists have said for a while that people who don't curse tend to be less trust worthy, and my experience agrees. So, I'm not saying a Lolita should never curse, just selectively and within the context of both environment and company. By that I mean they keep their "French" to a minimum when at a formal tea party or around new people, but effectively use it in the company of their friends.

>> No.9495577

I stopped cursing because it doesn't work anymore if you do it normally. If you only let out a curseword when something really, really pissed you off, it works as a stress reliever.

The concept of "being into manners" baffles me. Being polite or having manners is not a hobby of mine, and nothing that I actively want to achieve. I just wasn't raised in a barn and don't want to be an obnoxious jerk when I'm around people, so I follow basic rules for social interaction and have table manners that won't embarrass me. Is that lifestyle-y enough already?

>> No.9495648

>>9495536

I'm just not a fan of forcing yourself to swear or not swear. You shouldn't have to feel pressured to start using swear words just to fit in with your "friends". Surely you can find some group some where that doesn't mind if you're not putting a swear word into every fifth sentence or whatever the stats tell you.

Adding to >>9495577, it also works on outsiders. If you normally don't swear, and have a reputation for not swearing, people pay ten times the attention when you do swear. I've gotten way more drastic reactions with a simple "oh shit" than girls who throw out entire vocabularies of swear words, because I'm the polite girl who doesn't swear, so when I do, everyone notices, and everyone immediately thinks serious shit has hit.

That's just common courtesy, it's not necessarily lifestyle-y but always good to have. You don't have to actually implement old fashioned etiquette into your own life to be a lifestyle lolita by the way; I have an interest in etiquette as a social custom, I like reading about it but like you I mostly stick to common courtesy and don't necessarily follow Victorian etiquette in my life.

I would love to wear lolita more often, but i spend most of my time cloistered in my dorm room. Idk wearing lolita indoors in a 10 meters square space isn't very stimulating to look forward to.

I drink tea and infusions all the time, but i don't even have a teacup and drink tea like a "barbarian", in glasses, using microwave to heat the water.

I wear lolita every day barring social standards that might need to be met that day or if im literally only leaving the house to get food

I cant be bothered to take a picture every single day and even with somewhat over 30 dresses its going to be a lot of repeated coords which will get boring for everyone.

I just take pictures when its a new coord or im actually doing something special. Other than that I do crochet and love to read but thats about as feminine as I get. I dont like tea or coffee and I dont think lolitas have to be polite or reserved although I tend to be more out of social anxiety than the thought of "Im a lolita"

I think the only thing now that makes you a lifestyle lolita is simply if you treat the fashion as your normal wear.

Lolita-at-heart types did contribute to the stigma around the lifestyle concept (not that people supported it fully before but you get what I mean), but the lifestyle and fashion aren't mutually exclusive. Meeting up with your friends to casually browse the GLBs, watch Kamikaze Girls and do other "lifestyle" things is ten times more fun when you actually wear the fashion.

>> No.9496477

I think wearing the clothes matters most. If you don't do that, it's never a lolita lifestyle really. But if you wear the clothes already then lifestyle is mostly just 'things you do in lolita?'
I wear lolita fashion at least a couple of times a week, often more but I've always thought this lifestyle ideal is a bit strange. I'm just as girly or feminine when I wear non-lolita clothes. I don't do different things or act differently when wearing the fashion. I dress up a bit more for meets, that's about it.

>> No.9496498

>>9496477
I don't think there's an ideal for lifestyle lolitas other than wearing the fashion daily. The rest is what you make of it, every "lifestyle" is different, but I think at its core it's made up of things that make you "feel" more lolita or give you inspiration relating to your personal lolita "bubble".
Changing your personality or "acting more lolita" (whatever that means) when you're dressed up is more like putting up a false persona and treating the clothes like a costume than participating in the lifestyle.

>> No.9496843

>>9496498
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think in Japan it's less unusual to have a fake persona for different clothing styles. They wouldn't see it as fake, but as showing a different side of yourself. I remember reading about a lolita who acted more gallant and put ladies first when she wore ouji.

But see, that's just it, I'm not sure what you were doing to be 'active' but unless you are wearing the fashion, it's just not lolita. That's the most basic part. You can have tea parties, braid elaborate hairstyles and have all manner of elegant and feminine hobbies but the basis of lolita fashion is always actually wearing the clothes. That is the real beginning.

This is why I don't usually like 4c, there are a bunch of you sounding off here that don't even wear the fashion yet but somehow think your opinion counts already within the fashion. It doesn't. It's fine to wear a sundress, shawl and a hat and have elegant manners at the local garden tea party, admirable even. But that's not lolita or lolita lifestyle. I'm not hating on those who aren't there yet but until you start wearing the fashion yourself, there is only so much you can really do to be part, and the rest is some sort of play pretend that is only happening in your own imagination. Lolita is wonderful but just imagining things eliminates all the real frustration of it too, like when your accessories did not arrive in time, your shoes pinch, your wig gives a headache and your lace crumples up.

I used to post in the lifestyle threads until I figured out that most of you here don't even wear the fashion yet. And yes, it's disappointing because I wear lolita often and I do have what my friends consider a lolita lifestyle. So I still look in occasionally.

Most lolitas-at-heart idealize what it means to be a lolita when the reality is quite different. It's a shame because they kind of cheat themselves out of the actual beginner experience when they jump in to discussions with no basis, with no clothes to begin themselves. The beginning while waiting for a new dress and putting together the coord is something that you just can't experience without buying the pieces and it's a big part of the journey for some of us, we do it over and over with each new main piece.

I'd love to be part of an online lifestyle lolita group but only with others that are actively in the fashion already. If there was a forum, we could have a gateway thread for those not active yet but who were buying their first coord soon. When they made their first complete coord, they could debut their photo and we could welcome them into in the main forum and grant full access.

I think the lifestylers are the ones who will keep the fashion going in the end when others give it up for something new or grow out of it. We will still be hosting the tea parties and getting a new bonnet and seeking out lolita shoes in pastel colors.

I'm not really familiar with what Chinese lolitas are doing, so I was only thinking of the western lolita scene since we already do things very differently than Japanese lolitas who don't really do comms and regular meets and such outside of brand events. It's already a very different experience between these two.

There used to be a certain Gossip girl here who kept us more up to date on Chinese news, I miss her!

But yes, encouragement to actually wear the fashion is about all I can offer here since everything else in a 'lolita lifestyle' is based on that first of all. There's no getting around the fact that you need to wear the fashion to live the lifestyle.

New lolitas can go the casual or soft lolita route and buy used items, that's about the least expensive way to really get into it. I've talked with a few lolita-at-heart types and they built up the fantasy in their mind so much first that actually wearing the clothes and going to events and meets was a let-down for them because they had this pre-conceived idea about it that wasn't based in reality at all. I'm sorry to see that happen.

Most of the girls in my comm just treat it like a fashion. The ones who come out to meets dress in full lolita but we have more meets that are just fun outings than teas or going to the theater or to classical concerts or more of what I imagine lifestyle lolita activities would be. Online chatter is more about buying and selling dresses than pursuing lolita-like activities.

I prefer coronation chicken salad as my favorite so far but now I want to try this. We will have at least 3 picnic meets in my comm this summer and it's usually too damp to keep merengue treats crisp until autumn. We go for little cakes or pastries as the treats but we all seem to love fruit too.

My comm isn't so much lifestylers but we do love to go to tea and dessert places and have picnics, both of which I think are pretty lifestyle lolita type meets so I'm happy. I wear blouse-less lolita without a petticoat often in the summer with my sandals, being such a rebel. But don't worry, I dress properly for meets or photos.

All in all though I don't think there's much for life stylers to discuss. I wear the fashion regularly so I don't need help coording or feel the need to snap pics. Thanks for posting about blooming tea, my recommendation would be to grab a selection of different kinds. Even though you might feel like saving them for a special occasion, try them out first. >>9493832
I would be interested to hear about what people consider lolita recipes. My lolita friend and I love hosting tea parties but have completely different tastes, so we split up the seasons to best represent our palettes.

I will normally take a theme, i.e (I am a fairly country 'bunny's garden'. From there I choose ingredients that I think a bunny would eat from a country garden and make recipes from that.

I think lolitas will interpret themes differently and since everyone has different tastes there isn't really a set lolita-esque spread. For me it is more about excellence that defines lolita dining, and I interpret that by growing many of my own ingredients preemptively for creative menu's at tea parties.

Response to OP: while I do consider someone whose primary wardrobe is lolita as lifestyle I don't really feel like it is the only requirement. Personally I think people who adopt the lolita subculture more as lifestyle, even if they can only wear the fashion on the weekends due to work requirements. The fashion is important, it is the main tenant, but many who have adopted lolita as an expression of their identity, feel like actual lolitas to me; in contrast to those who would respond "it is just a fashion" when asked what lolita meant to them. While people would discount the notion of subculture within lolita, if the clothing is the only thing making you lolita than you stop being lolita as soon as you put on a tracksuit to go to the grocery store. Which would in tern suggest there is something more to being a lolita than some frills.

Anyone who has 'adopted lolita as an expression of their identity' without wearing the clothes is the lolita-at-heart or armchair lolita that is the parody that most of us don't like. Otherwise I agree that it takes more than just wearing the fashion sometimes to really be a lifestyler though that's always the first requirement. Having afternoon tea, sewing, crafts and hobbies like studying singing or an instrument. I would say lifestyle lolitas as the ones who would like to have a lolita book club or go to tea rather than the ones up for bar-hopping or karaoke.

I'm a little of both. I wear lolita to meets and then several times a week on my own, sew some of my accessories. I collect dolls, I like the historical aspects of the fashion and prefer a tea party meet to an anime con but I like to go to both.

>>9501025
I agree and I actually prefer the savories unless the sweets are not just pastries or cakes and sweet breads. I like teas that are about half and half. And I don't like meets planned with a tea substituting for a meal if the offerings are more of a snack and mostly sweets.

I think that's lifestyle too. Japanese lolitas did and still do this. I wouldn't wear anything really good or valuable to a live but I'd wear lolita to one. Most con-going lolitas who are dressed up that day go to the music shows in lolita instead of changing but I've seen people change for the raves/dj shows.

But I'm pretty much of the opinion that lolita lifestyle is whatever people do regularly while wearing lolita clothes. Not every lifestyler is classical or likes crafts, sewing or more Victorian lady type stuff. I do a lot of stuff in lolita not because I 'dress up specially in lolita to do it' but because I like to wear the fashion a lot and I've got stuff to do.

Brand lolita tableware and cups, lovely tea sets, pretty china, kawaii bento and food prep stuff, pretty aprons you actually use. Who here likes and uses fun and loliable kitchenwares? If you wear lolita often, do you cook in it?

>> No.9501641

For me the lolita lifestyle was kind of a huge draw to the fashion in general I've always been kind of clumsy and boisterous naturally so for me flipping through the English glbs and later the Japanese ones I could get my hands on was really cool and gave me an ideal to shoot for, I taught myself how to do a lot of basic cooking and baking, minor sewing and learned about historical clothing styles from different eras. I don't need to wear the clothes everyday ( I litterally can't ) but I can easily see everything in my wardrobe and along with old novels I keep cute kitschy old lady nic knacks around so even if I can't wear the clothes my environment/ my living space feels at least a little lifestyle.

I know that a lot of negative things are said about lolitas-at-heart or armchair lolitas (and admittedly the special snowflake types are annoying with the 'everything can be lolita if you just believe' crap) but I always think to myself that someday they might be able to start wearing the fashion so I always felt like there should be some kind of not-quite-official but still lolita-related place for them to post too.

I think the majority of lolita-at-heart lurkers weren't annoying, it's those who were trying to post in lolita spaces with their non-lolita things insisting they were actually the real creative lolitas and the brand whores who bought full sets were just dull and boring. I still privately call them 'doily heads' because one girl had some kind of table doily lace looking thing on her head with her 'creative coordinate' one time and I thought it was the perfect example.
Mostly from tumblr and mostly thankfully few and far between, their lacy legend lives on.

People who don't wear lolita yet but plan to and actually go on to do it, even just a coordinate or two aren't usually like that at all. The only thing I'd caution anyone about is what you addressed, about lurking and learning and NOT just joining or jumping into the community with a bunch of posts and opinions until actually starting to put together that first coord.

>>9501671
I think if you actually wear lolita and like to pursue what are considered lifestyle things in your free time then that counts as lifestyler. Most people who have dress codes pursue their lolita fashion and activities in their free time. I think a few hardcore lifestylers try and arrange their working life so they can wear toned down lolita to their jobs but if I had to choose, I'd pick a better job with wearing lolita in my off time.

Oh lovely, where did you buy them? I'd love to see them and see more photos of friends meeting for tea and such, another reason I miss having a Daily Lolita type place to post, of course most people won't self-post here, nor do I blame them but CoF isn't the place to post fun lifestyler lolita things either. I'm not sure there is a good place for posting Lifestyle lolita things. Maybe on Instagram, tagging #lifestylelolita? #lolitalife? #lifeinlolita? Themed Instagram accounts are pretty popular.

Discussion question, since >>9502465 brought up wardrobe size and everyday wear: how many main pieces ( skirts, jsk or op) do you think a lifestyle lolita needs for daily wear? Minimum number and an ideal number.
Also how about blouses and shoes?
To start, I say 7 main pieces absolute minimum because weekly laundry/regular cleaning. Better if they are washable. Blouses would depend on how many main pieces were OP, say 3 OP so that leaves 4 days per week needing a blouse. Some blouses can be lolified, even thrifted.

Alternating days for shoes so 2 pair of shoes.
7 sets of legwear.
At least 2 head accessories though you can find some non-lolita bows, Alice bands etc.
assorted jewelry from various sources and some handmade.
An functional full front apron will be a staple since cooking in lolita requires dress protection.

What else? Other suggestions?

>> No.9502548

>>9502478
I agree with you.

I also think that at least a parasol in a neutral color (off-white, ivory or black) is ideal, a simple bag that fit any outfit and a vest or a coat, depending of where you live.

Of course, you can have more of them but I think they are nice additions to a building wardrobe.

>> No.9502557

>>9502478
As someone who's currently trying to wear lolita as often as possible, I've noticed that what I'm missing most in my wardrobe is blouses, cutsews, cardigans/boleros and legwear. Skirts and even JSKs (if you wear a blouse underneath) don't need to be washed every single time you wear them but blouses and leg wear do, plus blouses/cardi's/legwear are a great way to mix it up with only a few main pieces. If I had only the minimum number of blouses/cardi's and would have to coord my main pieces the same way every time I'd get so bored so quickly. Cutsews are great for lazy/comfy days, too.

Also seconding an apron, especially if it has pockets. Many of my skirts and dresses don't have pockets and when I'm bumming around the house I often put on my apron just so I have something to carry my phone around in.

It can depend cause some lolitas touch all sub-types which means they need more variety.
I personally am into gothic and i think:
>7-10 main peices{inluding skirts}
>7-10 blouses/cutsews
>2-3 pairs of shoes
>unlimited accessories and socks{variety is always nice}

But 100% agree on the apron, cause protection is needed and aprons are cute as fug. And i personally love cooking, baking and meal prepping.
Also an everyday light petticoat. Sadly cant always be maximum poof.

Does anyone else practice historical hobbies/crafts? I've been using a knotting shuttle for a while ago (purchased from a historical re-enactment site) to make strands for embroidery, and I've been prepping to attempt to recreate some historical embroidery patterns based on samplers and other pieces from the 18th-19th centuries.

I love researching different time periods etiquette because it can give such good input into how they lived their lives...but they don't work for modern settings in the slightest.

I do wish more folks knew how to take tea/dinner in a formal setting though. Just simple things like
1. Don't start eating until everyone has been served.
2. Pass from left to right.
3. If someone asks for something, closest person picks it up and passes it, not reaching over the fucking table and bumping everything / Tossing it over.
4. If refilling your cup, ask your neighbors if they would like to be topped off too.

A photo on simple table settings and how to place your napkin and silver if you leave the table but aren't finished and then what to do with them when you are finished would be helpful too.
Many people also forget to thank the meet planner/host(ess) as well and say polite goodbyes instead of just dashing off.

Tea manners would be a good one too, there are lots of little manners concerning steeping and stirring tea, eating from a shared tea service and how to actually eat scones politely.

A question for all the gothic lolitas out there: Do you consider yourself apart of the gothic lifestyle? If so, how does lolita play a role in that? Do you like tea parties, well-made fashion and the lolita elements?

I always considered gothic lolita something of almost a hybrid style. A "gothic lolita" lifestyler is not quite like a classic or sweet lifestyler. Sweet and classic seem to be closer to one another in "lifestyle", while gothic lolita borrows heavily from goth and "gothic lolita" seems to be the flavor of goth.

"The Sick Rose" is gorgeous.

I love historical mourning traditions. I feel like in modern society we're expected to hide and squash our grief right after the funeral because it makes other people uncomfortable to talk about death, whereas historically you were allowed and even expected to express it with mementos and jewelry and fashion well beyond the burial of your loved one. Practicing some historical aspects of mourning culture have definitely helped me after deaths, it feels more cathartic to me, like I'm actually processing the death by acknowledging it in various ways.

While I love brewing tea, baking and cooking for friends, sewing, gardening and lengthy conversations about lolita I also spend a lot of time studying anatomy and pathology, visiting graveyards, watching old horror movies, hoarding photography and art of very morbid subjects and decorating my home with as many macabre things as I can find. I thoroughly dislike the "gothic" label, even the "romantic goth" label, simply because of the negative connotations it evokes in most people. If I tell my coworkers I wear so many black dresses because I'm a "gothic lolita," the reception would be terrible. I prefer to say that death, mortality, dark and grisly things can be beautiful, and I want to fill my life with beautiful things.

>you were allowed and even expected to express it with mementos and jewelry and fashion well beyond the burial of your loved one
Yeah, my mother told me that she remembers her mom (my grandma) being kinda grateful for the widow's veil. My granddad died very suddenly and left her with 3 kids and a difficult situation, and she had to balance both mourning for the sudden loss and somehow rallying to go from society housewife for sole breadwinner for 4 people, and apparently she would scream in her nightmares calling for him for months.

She would occasionally also burst to tears of anguish while doing the groceries or such, and people just saw the black clothes and the black mourning veil and immediately knew what the problem was and sort of knew how to react. The mourning traditions gave her a permission to fall apart publicly, in a way, there was a pre-agreed social code of conduct for those situations

One of the reasons for the development of mourning fashion was so that people could outwardly display their grief in a way that was obvious to everyone around them, and so that the grieving person would be spared constantly having to explain their situation, so your grandmother's feelings are definitely understandable.

Yes because in reality I don't feel 100% other reasons like wearing also sweet in , not having a goth styled room and so on. I don't have a full gothic lifestyle nor I listen much to the classics of goth music even if I heard some of them or need to find more artists that fit my tastes.
Lolita lifestyle is more fitting for myself rather of a full blown goth lifestyle.

>> No.9511594

I listen to goth music and sometimes go to goth clubs but I don't consider myself part of the goth lifestyle really, although I sometimes joke that I'm a "part-time goth"...I love history and gothic architecture but I don't feel on the same page as most goths I meet since I don't like any other stereotypically gothic things. I hate tacky Halloween stuff, occult themes, and don't enjoy horror movies or gory/creepy things. I had a little bit of an edgy streak when I was younger but I definitely don't now. I basically just like the fashion and some of the music and don't have the morbid outlook, which makes me feel like a poser in goth circles.

Even though I ended up becoming a daily lolita, one of the reasons I originally really embraced gothic lolita was because it made me feel like I could wear multiple styles and that was okay. It's totally normal to wear, say, gothic AND classic, and in your average comm most lolitas don't give a shit what you wear when you're not at meets, even if it's not alt or girly at all. Totally different to the goth scene when I was younger which had an insane amount of gothier-than-thou gatekeeping and made me feel like I had to either wear goth exclusively or not participate at all.

> re: mourning traditions // and life now
Unfortunately our modern culture has gotten too removed from death to where it's basically impossible to talk about too. As someone who worked at a cemetery, people have moved to pretending it doesnt happen until it does and then it being a disaster.

I have to be blunt about this cause I have so many feelings after seeing families come into our office tearing themselves apart... Talk to your family and find out what they want and get it put in writing. If they want to go in the ground or mausoleum, get them to start paying on it now. I was working on a scanning project for the old documents to go digital and the price flux over the last 5 years was ridiculous. You can pay on it now like a car payment if its what you want. Dont leave it guys. Talk to your senpai. Sorry for the rant.

It sounds kinda like a cop-out answer, but one of the real turning points I can think of for the idea of "lifestyle" is that of ritual. Take care and pride in everything that you do.

Think of this: my gf and I like to have tea and a drink in the evening. I could just microwave a couple of coffee cups of water, drop a couple tea bags in, and spoon some sugar and cream in before sitting my fat ass down on the couch. No fuss, no muss.

OR, I could take the time to boil a kettle and fill the teapot. I could slow down and dress a few sugar cubes on a tray and have the bottle of brandy ready. I could garnish with a few small stawberries just because I know the color looks good, and my gf likes them. When that tray is placed on our beat up coffee table, it has some care and meaning to it. These little bits of reflection and consideration are what every manners and ettiquette book boil down to. Though small, the psychological impact and sense of satisfaction is gratifying. pic related.

And as an aside, being properly polite to people who you are at odds with is a great way to drive them absolutely insane.

I have my own "fake" clotted cream recipe that I like more because its richer, tarter, and sweeter // doesn't involve scalding milk forever.

Let half a block of cream cheese sit out until room temp. Whip with mixer to be fluffy. Add vanilla extract or even almond! Pour heavy cream slowly and keep mixing until fluffy, nicely whipped. Try not to over whip or it becomes buttery and more heavy. If you want it to be a little sweet, powdered sugar is a neutral add, but I love honey. If you have a sweet jam though its usually not necessary.

Its also really good on pancakes with blueberries.

there are plenty of places that sell teas ready made in loose leaf form and in bags some have flavors you would not normally get.
Tevana
Republic of tea
premium steep
to name a few
these places sell many types of tea, some of my fav are:
blooming ( peach ) - Tevana
Republic of tea - Red velvet, rose petal, celebration, ginseng green

Sometimes I make ginger tea by scratch just by boiling ginger and honey

If you boil the ginger with brown sugar until it thickens; strain it, and wait until it cools.
You can add it seltzer to make a ginger soda with way less sugar.

Peppermint tea - by boiling peppermint leaves
mountain mint tea by boiling mountain mint leaves
I also make a "Health tea"i guess
- earl grey ( any black tea will do ) steeped or boiled
- ground cinnamon
- Bay leaves
- Nutmeg
- tumeric
- teaspoon of honey
- milk ( i use almond (non sweetened ) because i am intolerant )
You can also process your tea yourself. If you do this you can either grow herbs to do " bush teas" or herbals. ( like chamomile, mint, ginger etc)
buy a camellia sensis plant for green/white/yellow/black
or get a roobious plant for red tea.
Depending type you want will determine if processing is very simple and short or long and a bit tedious.
You can add flavor with food grade oils and dried fruit, and flowers.

I posted earlier in the thread but it's really nice to hear from someone else that appreciates a gothic lifestyle. Could you tell me a little bit about your taxidermy? I've never had the desire to do it myself as I'm much more interested in human anatomy, but I still really appreciate the skill involved when it's done well.

So I don't go to concerts and haven't been to a goth club in about 5 years. I do visit and take pictures of historical cemeteries very often, study forensic pathology, watch lots of films with darker themes, hoard morbid photography, have listened to goth for most of my life, and wear nothing but "corporate goth" to the office I work at.

Dress code keeps me from wearing gothic lolita for the vast majority of my week, but when I do have spare time it's all coffins and skulls. There's something about combining such blatant femininity with morbidity that appeals to me like nothing else does. Even when I'm dressing casually I'll throw on a pair of anatomically correct heart earrings or a long black skirt.

Needless to say I spend a gratuitous amount of time online getting inspo from just about anything with a macabre theme, from google images to my pinterest to here.

Here's one of the photos I've taken from one of the cemeteries I frequented in NY. It was so beautiful and well maintained, my terrible cell phone camera didn't do it any justice.

I've had the F+F one and it was all right, you need to layer a thin petti over it to get a really good shape though.

My unpopular opinion is that cage skirts without pettis over them look awful, and I'm kind of disappointed so many girls in my comm have been buying them and talking up how good they are. A lot of the time when you're wearing a hoop skirt your dress will ride up or really obviously show the hoops from the back - obviously the wearer can't see it, but if you're walking behind them at a meet or in public you can. They also don't move as naturally or nicely as a petti, they're quite stiff. They look good in static photos which is why they're more popular, but I'd always prefer a ton of stacked pettis to a hoop skirt unless it was super hot.

I was reading an interesting article on Turkish Delight and how must kids had some wild ideas of what it was because CSLewis didn't do much to describe it.
>What did you think Turkish Delight was? Have you tried it since and do you like it?
>What other obscure candy do you like?

I really love marzipan treats. My friend made these cute little carrots that went ontop of a cake she made out of colored marzipan.
(Pic Marzipan Piggies!)

This cemetery looks really familiar...I'm from NY actually. My dad first got me interested and encouraged my fascination with morbid things. He's a bit of a history buff. Wherever we went on vacation, he always had to visit the local cemetery. haha

I'm really into the old horror movies and have been trying to integrate more books with dark themes into my reading. I'm about to start reading a book I dug up somewhere called "With Graciela To the Head-Hunters".

I usually stick to bones and prepare them for mounts. I prefer to use ones I find while on walks that are naturally deceased. This one is a squirrel a friend brought me to prepare. I cleaned it, soaked it in hydrogen peroxide for a few days to whiten it, and then gave it a nice coating of polyurethane spray to preserve it before mounting it. This method of soaking also works with teeth! I found the perfect size jars on ali express to make a cute jar of wisdom teeth. There used to be this great museum in Brooklyn for taxidermy! I'll attach some photos if you like.

I'm a student so I tend to dress kinda cozy for class. Fuzzy black SPR sweaters, and ripped leggings. I basically lived in these boots last winter semester: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0482/6561/products/yrulasospikeyangle.jpg?v=1476393611.. My work has a pretty strict dress code so I can only really get away with jewelry.

I believe the picture was from Green-Wood cemetery. Absolutely gorgeous, the lake there is breathtaking.
Your work is lovely! I would adore some of those other photos if you wouldn't mind sharing.
I feel your pain about strict work dress codes. The most I can get away with is a little jewelry too, or a pair of combat boots on casual Friday.

Like one needs an excuse! Do you know Ron? He's my uncle. I'm super butt hurt about not being able to go to that Ball that they were putting on. I didn't hear about it until all the tickets were sold out.

Which Ron? Potts? There are thousands of us.

As for the ball, there will be more. We shot a few volleys from the balcony, but I didn't stick around to schmooze or dance.

...I have known him for well over a decade. He's one of the founding members of my local SCA (medieval history) group, and my morris dancing idol.

He was actually one of my personal references when I applied over half a decade ago.

Yes, I know him :P

I am working on it. I fluctuate a lot, but I need to get back into shape for the next ACL/IMBC season. Thankfully, on top of my cardio, weights and fencing practices, I work a very active job. I just gotta cut back on the rich foods .

I will never have the 6-pack of young Gropey, but I can get rid of the damn keg.
