With some ivory lace tights, this would be a pretty outfit... but it's more like a vintage-y 'going to church' outfit than a Lolita outfit. Tights are too plain and too dark for the level of detail in the rest of the outfit.

I think it's mostly that the jacket seems too boxy and angular for Lolita; makes me think of the older women who'd turn up to my church in the '90s in floral two-pieces... The hat gives me that vibe, too. For a vintage-y outfit, the skirt's too Lolita, and for a Lolita outfit, that hat and jacket are too vintage.

I'm not sure I'd call this 'ita' in the standard sense of the word, though - she's not a painful-to-look-at level of badly dressed, just awkwardly between two fashions. I kinda want her to have a pencil skirt to match the jacket and some patterned/lacy tights, and to just go out there and be this ornately vintage sort of thing.

If everything in this wasn't Milanoo tier cheap, she'd have a chance - she's got the silhouette, the idea that you need either an OP or a blouse, some leg-wear that balances, etc. However, everything she's wearing's just terrible quality, and she has one thing on her head that looks like a floral headdress, and then like... just the one 'neko' ear??

If someone stripped that dress of all the cheap raschel lace, replaced the 'corset' lacing at the front with perhaps some black machine embroidery at the top, it would not be the /worst ever/ red x black dress. Her hair is too scene for the outfit, and her clothes are a little big, but if she wore a black wig, or even a nice darker purple blend one in more Lolita style, she wouldn't be that bad. Socks are a bit plain, and I think there's something up with the straps on her shoes, but it's not the worst co-ord. The hair does cheapen the whole thing, though.

Well sometimes people get depressed, and taking care of yourself is hard. If tumblr is any kind of barometer there seems to be a prevalence of mental health issues be it anxiety, depression, or other in online lolita communities. I myself suffered from depression and didn't care for myself as well as I should have. This of course is a self perpetuating cycle.

Anyway, that and I know plenty of lolitas who are afraid of really shopping online for lolita via taobao especially. That brand JSK you can shove yourself into you bought from an American seller on lacemarket is much more appealing to them than the perceived risk of contacting a shopping service to get a taobao JSK custom sized. That and the "status" of owning brand.
