Old thread hit image cap and is almost at bump limit >>9460968

This thread is for ouji and aristocrat (aka "boystyle") discussion. "Boystyle" is shorthand for "boystyle lolita" and refers to the masculine counterparts of lolita and, often, aristocrat fashions. There is a lot of overlap between these styles, and different people use different terms to describe them. So, consider this a thread for those whose style is on the right half of Buttcape's Lolita Family Triangle: http://www.kawacura.com/moripress/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/0dmmLH6-350x350.jpg

I have one of AatP's vest/shorts sets.

I'm slowly building up, I wish I could wear long pants but I'm a womanlet. I was eyeing all the AatP wide pants on lacemarket but the length seems too long for shorties unless they're altered.

and another Halloween ouji coord from KERA but fuck if i can figure out what differentiates it from a regular coord, since they put the spooky accessories at the bottom and not on the damn model.

the h. Naoto hat shown reminds me that spider web gauze (not the cottony stuff, nor the tulle(?) on this particular hat) is available where most Halloween stuff is sold, and it makes a really cool temporary addition to a hat.

At least once a month, trying for more often, but work dress code makes it hard.

I would like more blouses and waistcoats. Most of the blouses I have are hard to work with my other clothes, so I end up using the same two all the time.

while ouji can look more conventional and masculine, it is a pretty specific type of jfashion and isn't inclusive of all male jfashion, you're asking about techwear in a goth thread, just because they're black doesn't mean they're the same thing.

to answer your question though you have to be careful with those jackets if they're from cheap sellers, the asymmetrical look rarely works out in person

I'm not sure how this will be received but we don't have much else to talk about.

Here's some Jean Paul Gaultier couture for inspo. Might not be jfashion but if you see Alice auaa and JPG stuff on closetchild or wherever and are as confused as I am as to how it's supposed to be worn, here is some inspo.

I wouldn't call what they're wearing ouji exactly, but I think there's a lot more room for experimenting and these are pretty visually interesting. Pop on a jabot or whatever and you're in business.

I think it might also be motivating for tall masculine men who are interested in the style.

Probably better aristocrat inspo? Eh, ouji vs aristocrat is tough sometimes. I usually say all black + pants = aristo but these also have some pops of colour and use AatP style vests where aristo uses long jackets. The effeminate and youthful ouji styles are very distinct, obviously, but the lines can get very blurry.

The idea that ouji has to look a certain way and meet certain requirements is silly. More experimental stuff like Dangerous Nude has been putting out above, is a step in the right direction, I think. The progress lolita has made, looking back to oldschool, is leaps and bounds ahead of ouji. That's largely due to popularity, of course.

Most of this isn't even close to ouji at all or even aristocrat. Some of the elements, like the cage top hat, if you accessorized it a bit more could work. More interesting fabric choices too, but these cuts are just no to me.

Dangerous Nude isn't even a ouji brand, nor is Alice Auaa. They're just straight up goth/punky eccentric jfashion. A lot of their pieces could be worked into a coord but it's more difficult than just using pieces from a proper ouji brand. Ouji is changing but the Chinese are pushing it in a bad direction with taobao releases I personally feel. So many same-y cutesy cuts with super short shorts and short vests. You can see that same push with loltia fashion, and a lot of people don't like the direction it's going, hence why old school lolita is becoming more popular again.

There are no ouji brands, to be fair. Who, AatP? Their main demographic and focus is still lolita. Given that all most people know is Boz and AatP, we get stale coords using the same rolands and fjords, captain hollows and rose of versailles and samey-cut vests from years of aatp releases. At some point we stopped doing image dumps in these threads because everyone has already seen everything.

Taobao is a bit too kuroshitsuji-inspired these days, but at least they're doing something. AatP has been pretty stagnant for years, and hasn't released anything of the same quality as the above-mentioned jackets ever since.

Obviously what I posted isn't ouji, but looking at different fashions and taking inspiration is important if anyone is going to make innovative coords with their own taste and style. You look at bakasoseji, agentlemandoesnotconga, and aeryn. They all coord in very different ways, but bakasoseji was always using the most unusual pieces and accessories. Kinds of glasses that are acceptable? Seriously, being able to see properly trumps fashion every day. If you feel your glasses don't match your outfit, don't wear them for photographs. The only style of glasses I have seen get ridiculed in lolita are thick black chunky hipster frames. Ive personally not seen styles of glasses get bashed im ouji. If you're that worried, and are getting new glasses anyway so want to get some that got in with the ouji aesthetic, you're best looking for a style that suits you and look smart. Get some that work well with your wardrobe's colours as well as suiting you. It's worth investing in a good pair, look round for frames that feel and look right on you, and don't scrimp either on the lenses. Your eyes are important, look after them, go to a good opometrist, and discuss options on styles that suit you, and if need be, mention the fashion aspect for what you're looking for. Don't feel pressured to wear contact lenses if you can't wear them, not everyone can. Just like not all styles of glasses suit everyone.
I'm a fan of thin metal supra half rim frames as I have delicate facial features. I wear them when needing to see but take them off for photos even though they're smart.

The trend for the thin metal round frames is ridiculous. Most of the people I have encountered wearing these in ouji and lolita don't need to wear glasses, so you might be asked if you actually need them. Also, they don't suit everyone. Some people do look good in them, but some people need a small, rectangular frame. Some people look better in rimless or half rim frames. Don't skimp, invest, and go to a decent optometrist's to get the right prescription.

Ouji is not as popular as lolita. It's not even 5% as popular. All of the main lolita brands, save Mary Magdalene? have made ouji pieces. Even Angelic Pretty has a few odd ball sets. I really think it's just more people don't wear ouji nearly as much as lolita. And this has always been like this. I really think ouji has evolved alongside lolita, back in the day you only saw black x white coords like this. OF course there is EGA too, but ouji has definitely gotten more interesting over the years.

I love rolands, I have 4 myself and they're versatile with my lolita wardrobe too. I'm sick of aatp's releases with the bright trim and nasty pleated ribbon trims. And I'm also sick of everything being black still. I've been successful in buying a lot of colored and textured ouji pieces recently, you just have to look around.

the rules for ouji are basically: like lolita, but with pants, and, if you want, a more masculine look.

the same brands that make stuff for ouji make stuff for lolita. and offbrand ouji often looks bad because it is people using office blouses or fast-fashion shorts instead of quality materials.

here is some random shit i have saved recently which was called ouji directly, or else seems obviously ouji to me. i am happy to do more themed image dumps so i have a reason to hoard these photos.

since the discussion is on boundaries of ouji here are some coords which you may find interesting

"masculine/androgynous version of lolita" is not much of a "rule" but i think it is the best rule we have for ouji. a lot of diversity is possible within that framework. without the need for a skirt that accommodates a petticoat, ouji is freer to experiment with silhouettes.

just make sure you follow the rules of head-to-toe coordination (a balanced silhouette, unified theme, and color scheme) and quality (frills, pinktucks, lace, bows, etc., are more important than prints). the extra care in assembling the outfit pieces, both on the manufacturing level and the coordinating level, is most important.

in contrast, this dude on the right looks like literally any kind of neo-vic fashion enthusiast. a lot of guys who are too big for the usual ouji items make this mistake of using normal clothes. then, you might as well be at a steampunk event, a Dickens fair, or the Victorian picnic at WGT.

this man is probably not aiming for "ouji" (the pic is from, iirc, Artism Market, which tends to be more mature than a tea party or KERA event). but he is standing next to some people wearing burando so the contrast is good. on Mr. Right, the jacket is too plain, and not fitted.* the ascot and blouse are nice, but again, too plain. there is no accessorizing, and the outfit looks rather thrown together instead of coordinated in a way where each piece is talking to each other piece as part of a unified self-referencing whole. in comparison, the person in the middle seems closer to ouji because of the fit and extra details on the coat, and the flair on the top hat.

*have you noticed that often, but not always, ouji sets made by brands have a defined waist around where a lolita OP or JSK would flare out? this is often because vests and jackets and blouses are made with both ouji and lolita in mind. it is a small echo of the lolita silhoutte, not as extreme, and not ubiquitous, but i think it is there more often than not. offbrand coords that use menswear tend to be shapeless in comparison, and fall short of the ouji label despite ticking off the usual items (buttoned shirt, waistcoat/vest, and pants/shorts)

the defined waist, often created by either a fitted jacket or pants that are loose/poofy at the hip, is what seems "off" about indie designer Fidel David to me. his work is beautiful, but his ouji often looks odd due to emphasizing the square torso with items that are fitted to waist, hip, and leg. this is a very masculine look, but a little give or poof in the upper part of his pants, or even a gathered hem below the knee, might help bring it in line with Japanese brand aesthetics. i am not sure about this. but i know many other male ouji designers and models go for the defined waist and flared hip, and i think his work would seem less "Western" if he did the same

>"masculine/androgynous version of lolita" is not much of a "rule" but i think it is the best rule we have for ouji
Precisely why I think it is ripe with opportunities to incorporate interesting avante garde fashion pieces. We have a very flexible guideline to work with, so long as a few key points are hit, and ouji can, as you've shown, blend in with other styles very fluidly.

>>9623385
>*have you noticed that often, but not always, ouji sets made by brands have a defined waist around where a lolita OP or JSK would flare out?
This bothers me a lot, and I am always upset to try something on and realize the vest is made to fit a skirt under it; the waistline is extremely unflattering for men unless they can pull off some sort of shota coord. We need a better name for that, shota probably isn't a good one, but that's another discussion. I was going to say schoolboy but that sounds like it excludes young prince, I.. eh, anyways.

It's very interesting to me that Isobe has done something here that no one else has.. he's wearing a granny smith long vest in black under a vargossa jacket. When combined like that, the omnipresent gaudy trim aatp uses on everything actually looks cool and adds layers to the outfit. I was going to joke that he probably can't button it up given his size, but.. I think he actually can't I'd assume he would modify it to fit, but from the look of his vargossa collar being folded over in a way that needs some serious ironing, he probably doesn't care.

>With layering, sometimes the more the better. When you layer a lot of black you're like a walking Louise Nevelson sculpture, and that's pretty attractive. Allowing yourself to be vulnerable is also one of the most attractive things you can do.
this applies to all dark and gothic fashion, what we lack in colour we make up for in depth and texture

>Hair and shoes say it all. Everything in between is forgivable as long as you keep it simple. Trying to talk with your clothes is passive-aggressive.

Some different shoes and more elaborate hair would do some of these wonders, and could turn steampunk or historical wear into.. at least more passable of an ouji coord. A wig can or fancy up-do can really turn you from "regular dude looking out of place in victorian clothing" to full fledged ouji pretty quickly. you could just say "childlike," it is how lolitas refer to certain sack dresses. it would be 100% better to keep "shota" far away from ouji discussion. lolita suffers enough from its loli connotation.

as for the waist, i think the prime periods of mens fashion that ouji designers draw from (Rococo, Regency, Victorian) have defined waists. ideally, i think a jacket or long gilet for ouji would have a subtler flare than one made for lolita, but i enjoy swooshing too much to do away with it and just have a straigt, tight line.

it is disappointing to still not have full coordinate photos of these two brands' ouji releases, since they offer sizes that Asian brands often do not. generally speaking, both matticus and frochan fit brand normally, and the photos are not clear quality

yes it is.

if you look on Yahoo Japan, you can go into the "angelic pretty" category and waste even MORE time sifting through a bunch of poorly-classified lolita items in hopes of finding something for ouji.

also, for any Japanese second-hand site, run the brand name you are interested in through Google Translate to get the katakana of it.

Self post for hair/makeup recommendations. I've been getting into ouji/aristocrat type fashion, but I'm struggling on what to do with my hair and makeup. I tend to do foundation, a bit of subtle contouring an fill in my 'brows a bit, but I'm not sure what else to do - I'm Goth in every day life (and Romantic Goth) and I don't know how to do ouji-appropriate Gothic makeup.

Several people recommended I get a hat for this co-ord, and I do have a tricorn for it now :) But hat aside, what should I do for hair? This is a short black wig. My natural hair is pretty unnatural these days with v-bangs and neon green, so not ouji-appropriate

alice auaa jacket, 51cm shoulders. probably the widest you can get brand. it has a Moitie-esque shape so if you prefer the asymmetrical, flowy drama of Gothic Aristocrat, this baby calls out for you

>>9638911
this is a solid coord, but your face looks washed out and your wig needs texture. i would start from whatever your usual makeup style is and subtract elements that feel too strong. as a goth, you have a style that is yours already. own it. in fact if you want to post a pic of your usual makeup i can give tips on how to oujify it.

because the western comm gets most of its inspo from the rare scans people deign to post, and those people who deign to post tend to all come from the "fresh faced lolita" aesthetic, gothic aesthetic is under-represented. this was less true back when gothic substyles reigned, but for a long time, the most circulated scans have followed a similar plain aesthetic. most ouji does do best with a cleaner look, but gothic ouji with darker makeup does exist.

pic related is an OTT coord for Halloween (the spider is attached to the jacket) but check out the face squiggles

Thank-you very much! Lots of inspiration there! Very helpful indeed :)

I think I need to invest in some more layered/choppy wigs. The one I tend to use (in the picture) tends to lay very slick and flat, and even when I try and make it more interesting (which I did for the pic shared), it's still very plain. I do have a black wig with a red streak, that's a little fluffier but have worried that the red wouldn't be suitable for Ouji, although I have actually worn it for an Ouji co-ord anyway (no good pics, sadly).

I've got some pics of my usual make-up styles; I go for either vivid colours to match my hair, or swirlies. My real hair is dyed pretty bright, so it's a) not ouji- appropriate and b)what I usually try and go with in my make-up; black + the colours of my hair, so the bright hair and all black outfit get tied together more. (Pics have been collaged from the collages I make for my Insta)

>worried that the red wouldn't be suitable for Ouji
i think it can work, especially for gothic.

for your makeup, i personally like bottom-left best. i think swirls would look better if your brows were also darkened, since in the upper photo the vine crawls over it and makes it seem weak in comparison, which highlights the unnaturalness of the squiggles, but i am NOT a makeup artist or any kind of expert. in my unexpert opinion, to j-fashify your current makeup style, i think i would go subtler and play with the gradient idea on bottom left, bringing the brows closer in for that visual kei scowl (like >>9639029 and >>9639031). the Boz dude has a gradient shimmer up to his browbone but it is much lighter. even the relatively raccoon-eyed example (>>9639042) keeps the deepest colors closer to the eye. so i would try to blend the color into something paler approaching your brow, if that makes sense.

Mana-sama is always good inspo for dramatic makeup, and gothic lolitas & oujis still imitate his style. even in a dramatic Aristocrat look, like pic related, there is the blending i was trying to describe. compared to western goth, Japanese goths seem to prefer to keep the deepest pigment concentrated around the eyes with any color directly beneath the brows blended more mildly.

also, the matchiness of choosing eyecolor based on hair color could work well for gothic ouji, even that wig you mentioned. i imagine a black wig with a red streek worn with dark, black eye makeup that has a pop of red. or black+red gradient lips, which are a longtime staple of visual kei looks.

another thing, which i have been gather inspo pics for for a different thread, is that colored hair is trendy in Japanese street fashion of all kinds right now, and all genders. the colors are on the softer side, mostly, and often they have a gradient involved. i have been looking for an affordable short wig like that without luck, but i hope the trend continues and more options appear.

this is an ouji with multicolored hair, but the Japanese are shy so it is hard to see. i think your bang/fringe line is probably not right for ouji, but i have also seen a certain model with a similar hairline but as a wig where the V was much further forward. still, fun hair colors are In so everyone should have fun with them. and even if they go Out, have fun with them. the Western community needs more style and variance and risk-taking

if your shoulders measure more than 40cm across, you will probably have to rely on indie brands that offer custom sizing. Fan+Friend makes many dupes of Atelier Boz and Moi-meme-Moitie, the main masculine gothic brands suitable for ouji. they are iffy quality-wise, but check reviews for the items you are interested in.

technotropism (>>9611629) is quite tall and manages to fit men's sizes in brands like Moitie, Boz, and Alice and the Pirates. other tall, broad-shouldered men have had success with alice auaa as well. however, you would also need to be thin to fit those brands.

Buttcape's list of brands (in the thread OP) mentions which indie brands have custom sizing.

one day, Ikemen Mode will have an online shop. they are meant to fit larger, Western oujis. they look good in person. but they seem to only sell at cons.

meanwhile, as mentioned earlier, napoleon-style jackets are sold by many non-EGL brands so be on the lookout for them. and always remember to color coordinate. sometimes the "feel" of ouji can come through in non conventional coords if some general guidelines are followed. pic related is in Ozz On, which is still a Japanese street fashion brand, but this kind of outfit (napoleon jacket, interesting black pants, and Docs that kind of match a jabot) can make for "good enough" ouji style when you are starting out and give you coording practice. no reason to wait for that Fan+Friend order to come in before you start dressing like a prince with what you have on hand!

My girlfriend is really interested in aristo, but she's a complete newbie to jfashion (it's starting with this) and I'm not much of somebody who followed the masculine counterparts of lolita previously (or gothic, which is the kind of vibe she wants to go for), so I'm not sure what exactly to show her as an "intro" of sorts, like a good introduction to the main brands and where to find accessories, etc. Any help would be appreciated! She's really been digging Atelier Boz as of right now.

>> No.9665277

I figured this would be the best place to ask for aristo even though the thread seems mainly for ouji, but what are the top brands for masculine aristo? (Atelier Boz and MMM are the only two I can think of off the top of my head, along with some stuff from Ozo)

I'm trying to find some stuff to help my girlfriend who is a jfash noob who is suddenly really into aristo/EGA, but not so much ouji. I'm a lolita/more feminine jfash sort of person so I haven't paid much attention to the masculine counterparts until now!

Thanks for any help, guys, sorry I'm retarded.

the same brands for ouji. the distinction is mostly artificial, created by the Western comm to separate cute from mature ouji. imagine classifying Fanny Rosie's coords as "not lolita" because they are different from Lovely Lor's. in many cases, coords used from KERA or the GLB to illustrate "aristo" are literally labelled ouji or prince in the magazine. or butler. because the distinction has a weird relationship with the Cielification of ouji and KERA did a lot of Black Butler inspired coords and all the "butler" ones got labelled "aristocrat" by the Western comm. fucking ironic.

anyway, look for brands from the Gothic section of Closet Child like other anon said. if you want masculine or mature ouji that is not gothic, Alice and the Pirates sometimes has items good for that and so does Excentrique. they also each offer men's sizing.

>> No.9689730

It's not necessarily ouji because it's not jfash, but you can style yourself with this style in mind as long as you accessorize well because Edwardian fashion doesn't have many frills if at all so you could easily look like you're just wearing a fancy suit. A nice ascot and an interesting (but not too big) brooch will be good, as well as interesting colors and patterns like wearing a wine damask waistcoat under your jacket to add some interest.

Mind you that dandy is a very broad term and you can have facial hair with it... depending on what it looks like of course. Don't tie a bow in your beard, that'll probably just look comical. If your hair is long enough you can tie it in a ribbon though.
Have you seen this video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwnmGod0OqM Look around the 5:00 mark and you'll see an example of a great aristocrat outfit that's absolutely appropriate for meets, and incorporates 0 brand. Another idea or reference for you, if you will.

William Gladstone. It's named after an English prime minister.

Anyone have photos/reference of lolita items being converted into ouji ones? I recall a few people converting jsks into vests/skirts and the like and would love to look closer at how they went about it.

Mana-sama said he would no longer be modeling lolita for Moitie, but would give EGA renewed focus while hiring a female model for lolita.

do you think this may mean more EGA releases on the horizon, fewer, or the same?

also if you have a Twitter, Mana-sama wants to see your Moitie coords with the hasthtag #moitie_code

show him the power of Western aristocrat/gothic ouji

aw

i am sure he will not cry. last i checked, the tag was not going far and he may even have taken it down after getting about 3 responses. either that, or Twitter vanished some posts on me

my bad, it looks like it was reposted to be for #moitie_coord instead of "code." the new international team probably corrected it, i imagine. the tag is hopping, check it out!

My fingers are crossed for more EGA. I feel like While Mana modelling the lolita side of Moitie is traditional, I see the merit in swapping to a female model. Let's face it, Mana doesn't look quite as good as he used to in lolita. He still looks amazing in EGA though.

Considering the sizing and his consistently conveniently placed arms (over the most likely gaping zippers) he probably doesn't fit size 2 anymore anyway

I'd heard that he had custom sized dresses made for him. I think some of his posing was to disguise his masculine build as well.

this is what i have also been hearing (for years).

i also think he would look better if he stuck with his old-school gothic lolita look. attempting the more natural wigs and cuter poses does not work.

Um hi guys. This is my sweet boystyle outfit, and I posted on CoF yesterday. However people don’t seem to buy it, it got like 20+likes. Could anyone tell me what I did wrong?

>> No.9714551

-that camel toe
- bloomers as shorts
- ita colorway in pink and black
- edgy garters that aren’t functional in a “sweet” coord

You look like the typical Chinese cosplayer trying to fit in. No sense of the style whatsoever.

>> No.9714559

>>9714542
I almost commented on it critiquing it, but didn't... The garters absolutely ruin it for me I'm afraid. The bare skin isn't a good look, it doesn't balance out the solid black blouse enough.

>> No.9714561

>>9714542
i know you from Discord and various other platforms and i feel like i should tell you that likes aren't everything. every time you post to CoF, you ask people in the Discord why you didn't get likes and it's a little concerning. maybe take a step back from CoF because all it seems to be doing is making you sad that you aren't getting the likes you want. it's natural to want validation but doing something that disappoints you over and over isn't good for you.

>t. genuinely concerned acquaintance

as for the outfit, i think black tights (patterned or solid) would be better than all of the interesting legwear you have on right now. the garters are a little too menhera-esque. your posing is getting better but it still looks a little forced; instead of overly posed photos, focus on standing up straight and having good posture. i think it'll help a lot.

i dont think this is awful, but need to change everything on legs other than shorts.

I would ditch the garters and get some different shoes, like booties. I also dont think the wig is very flattering cut.
