Considering the amount of people that got their gifts in April last year, better to start early than late. The organizer from last year wasn't the best, but with a little more moderation the general idea of filling out the forum and whatnot I stand behind. Really we need to think of a better solution to grinching though, and have more strict deadlines.

the fact that you even had the idea of doing this is why i'm always hesitant to join. people feel entitled to participate in things like this, and then grinch people saying "oh b-but it's not my fault! it was an accident i accidentally didn't have money for it!" if you don't have money don't join.
anyways before getting ready to throw an email here, we need to know if it's even happening, and if someone is even going to organize it. usually it happens by filling out questionnaires on those google survery things desu

What is reading comprehension?
I wanted to join but I purposefully didn't to avoid even the possibility of grinching someone.
How does me intentionally avoiding something that could end badly for someone else make you hesitant to join?
No where did I even consider joining with that possibility in mind.

Last year there were different price brackets, including $10-15, $20-30, $40-50, and $50+. These price ranges also did not include packaging or shipping costs. People generally had their gift value at the upper limit of the bracket, and it was actually kind of common to go over the suggested value, which was really nice. I had no problems managing 4 Santas, and received brand pieces or accessories in 3/4 of my gifts. Honestly though, I'm not picky and don't really care if I get brand, as I listed a lot of interests and there were plenty of cute handmade or offbrand gifts.

On another note, please don't sign up unless you know what you're getting into, and be honest with your budget/ hobbies. Last year we had someone who was not into lolita but who wanted to buy gifts for lolitas, and someone ended up getting hairbows that were kind of meant for toddlers. He was really nice about sending make up gifts, but things were kind of messy. On the flip side, some people were only able to shop locally and this got some people freaking out about not getting gifts related to their interests, but all of the gifts were very nice and well over the price bracket.

Last year for White Day we experimented with a white list for people- those who passed the Grinch Check were allowed to do more than one gift, and those who were new to it could only do one. Not sure what happened to those who were considered grinches though.

>> No.9626011

>>9625987
No, not really, and nice doesn't have to mean expensive. It just seemed a lot of people got excited and ended up going over budget because they wanted to get the perfect gift. Of course this was more common in the higher price brackets too. The vast majority of people were grateful recipients.

>> No.9626198

Grinches could still sign up for the card exchange, and then if they get enough positive feedback be allowed onto the white list for the next gift exchange. The issue would be keeping track of these different lists since all these events are organized by different people.

imo they shouldn't be allowed to do this. i have no pity or feel any obligation to allow grinches to ever participate in any similar even again.

>> No.9626229

I really want to participate again, but I just have such a sour taste in my mouth... I got grinched during both SS and the following White Day. In SS, my $50+ gift I sent was never posted by what the group mutually realized was a grinch and I worked incredibly hard to get them pieces relevant to their interests, and even hand-drew a /cgl/ themed starbucks card for the mix. Another recipient really obviously didn't care for the brand piece I had picked out for her. My $50+ in return got me things that were way too small for my height, not to mention incredibly threadbare and poor quality... I wish I could be excited, but I can't find anything positive to say about the experience. No one seemed to appreciate the pieces I gave, and the pieces that I *did* receive weren't even wearable...

Yeah. The White Day grinching sorted itself out re: sending gifts to grinched gulls (at least for me), but not SS. A part of me wonders if my list of interests had anything to do with my grinching? Maybe I shouldn't say that I wear masculine j-fash styles? Maybe SS is better for people who are more into lolita and not primarily cosplayers? I do feel like there's a real discussion to be had here re: what kind of things are better/worse to see on a wish list, but maybe my double grinching was just a coincidence and I'm looking to put a reason to it

Yes, because that was exactly their reasoning. I was one of the santas from last year with 6 giftees that ended up sending out my gifts a little late due to some unforseen stuff happening in my life. My gifts were pretty well thought out and I hope everyone liked them all. Santagull said I wouldn't be blacklisted, but not whitelisted earlier. I'm free to paticipate. I must have worded it poorly. I'm primarily a cosplayer myself. I was wondering if that had anything to do with my high grinch rate. I didn't say or imply anything about leaving us out of future SS events.

>>9626297
I know on my list, I suggested wigs, gave my upcoming cosplay list, sizing in both mens and womens, as well as suggestions for makeup (even giving my foundation brand/number so they knew what skin tone I had if they wanted to get something that would be flattering.)

I don't know about other cosplayers, but things like base wigs, base shoes, accessories to a costume, or even circle lenses from a wishlist or something all seem like potential gifts.

>> No.9626325

>>9626318
i guess as a lolita, the hardest thing about shopping for some of the things you've mentioned (like base wigs and base shoes) would require us to see the potential in something for you... and when it comes to cosplay, that can go awry if what we buy can't be of use. so without very specific links/statements like "i need x's wig pls" i would have a hard time buying for a cosplayer who is only interested in cosplay materials.

hopefully that makes sense. with someone as fashion as their primary interest it can just kind of be like "here is a cute thing to put on your body hopefully it goes with whatever you have"

I mean, given this a cosplay and j-fash board, I don't think it's so crazy to expect someone to list out a j-fash as their interest and expect to get a j-fash gift. I agree that's it's courteous to list some easier gifts, such as makeup, gift cards, snacks, and off-brand accessories, but why would someone be out of line to list himekaji? As for only collecting brand, maybe they meant they didn't want any replicas.

T b h , I also only collect main brand pieces (as a lolita). I wouldn't be upset if someone sent me taobao or off-brand, but my giftee might want to know the makeup of my wardrobe/what I like.

I'm also into both cosplay and lolita, and honestly I wouldn't sign up for this if I was only into cosplay. It's hard to gift for cosplay without saying "I want [specific piece for specific character]" which takes the mystery and surprise out of it. The whole point of SS is to get something you didn't fully expect, and be surprised at what you get. I wouldn't want some random wig or piece for a character I'd have no interest in cosplaying either. Even asking for makeup and whatever, it's just in general more difficult to not ask for specific things. With lolita, it's easier because you can just give your style and measurements.

I think there isn't that many cosplayers, there were stats listed and most who participated last year were Lolitas. There were a few other jfash only ppl as well, but overall it was lolita based. I don't think we should cater to such a minority. Not that they should be banned but they should be able to buy lolita (since the chances are they will) and be able to provide vague interests that are cgl related that is reasonable for a lolita to buy for. Ideally we match the non Lolita's together but it gets complicated with other stuff.

Last year it was sorted by local and interests as some people didn't want to spend on international shipping which meant that local was a priority. This led to some not preferable matches. There was also trying to match by price range as well but it didn't work out.

I feel like as long as it's board-related, it should be fine?

Jfashion: vkei, nanchatte, fairykei, mori, otome, lolita, aristo, himekaji, gyaru, etc etc etc

fan/otaku fashion: itabags items, cosplay,

other: side interests such as art, thematic "kawaii", makeup, cards

I'm really hoping this gets picked up and on the roll soon. I know it's super early, but I like ordering gifts from Japan for the people I get, and I take a while to put together the perfect gift (never been late sending out, but last year I felt really rushed). With the amount of people that sent gifts out months late, starting planning a few months early is better.

2017 Seagull Secret Santa Rules and Restrictions-
-Send all gift lists to seagullssanta@gmail.com
-Include 10-15 items on your list. Provide links if applicable. Make sure you add measurements, styles, and colors that you prefer.
- Do NOT specify brand only or for specific items only. This makes things harder on your gifter!
-Specify what type of gifts you're looking for (lolita, cosplay, vk, yumekawaii, etc) We will try to assign people to like hobbies. If you know enough about other /cgl/ hobbies, let us know incase we need to assign different people to different hobbies.
-Let us known what your shipping limits are and where you are located. We will try and keep things local.
-Please send lists in by October 22nd- We will not accept any late lists. Pairings should be assigned around November 1st.
-Specify which tier you'd like to like to be in. (Prices are BEFORE shipping costs. Please bear this in mind when signing up)
Tier 1 (Cards, Small Trinkets, and gifts up to $10)
Tier 2- $10-$30
Tier 3- $30-$60
Tier 4- $60-$100
Tier 5- $100-$150
-Do NOT spend below the tier you are given. If there is an uneven amount of tiers, we may bump you down to the next lowest tier. However, you're more than welcome to spoil someone and spend above.
-Do NOT sign up for more than you are able to spend. We will cap the amount of gifters/giftees at 3 per person. If you are on the whitelist, you can sign up for more if you're able.
-Please try and provide lists for lace market, etsy, ebay, facebook sales, or simmilar lists for selling. Otherwise, you will be restricted to tiers 1-3. (Unless you are on the white list from a previous exchange)
-Please also provide your address for your gifter. You don't have to use your real name.
-Gifts are due to be shipped by January 15th, otherwise you will be listed as a grinch. (Unless discussed by your giftee incase of unforseen circumstances. Shit happens)

Lads honestly this is looking for trouble, I commend you on the "dont specify brand only" rule because honestly relieves alot of pressure off newbies but can also lead to a SS sending off shitty taobao bundles and claiming its $100 when in reality, more like $50. I'd keep it to 3 tiers so you can track it alot easier and $50+ being the max. Lets anons spoil eachother if they want to but can also not come off totally disappointing.

Also that's gonna tempt so many grinches.

I'm a bit confused as this is my first year interested in this. If you aren't asking for specifics, why would links be needed? By gift lists, do you mean like asking for "wristcuffs, hair bows" and things like that, that are generic but still specific enough?
also, how would cosplay work? it seems like it'd be really hard to ask for cosplay without being extremely specific. I'm asking as I'm more into cosplay than lolita, but I wouldn't want to burden someone or take the fun out of it by asking for specifics.

>> No.9630029

>>9630026
Links could be used for a dress you're looking to accessorize.

The "no specifics" thing came about because some gulls last year got people who said they ONLY wanted brand and wouldn't be happy with anything else.

I think the rule writers are trying to say, "You can't ask for one specific item and then get mad when you don't get it."

Cosplay in the past has included general crafting items, items related to past or upcoming cosplays (merch from the property you're cosplaying, for example). But again, I think a wig would be a perfect thing you could get for a cosplayer.

>> No.9630030

>>9630026
It's more like, you shouldn't have a list and say "I ONLY want these items." Your list should provide a general idea of the types of things that you would like. If your partner can get you the specific items that's great, but if not, they can get you similar items.

ASking for a handfull of specifics is fine. But the issue is ONLY specifics.
Like saying
I ONLY WANT THIS SPECIFIC ITEM, THIS SPECIFIC ITEM, THIS SPECIFIC ITEM, OR THIS SPECIFIC ITEM.
Is what the issue is- because your gifter won't have any options if they can't track down those specific items. (Especially in Jfashion)
Same goes for brand. Having a list of ONLY brand items is more what is against the rules, but there's nothing wrong with having a few brand items listed on there.

To me, asking for specifics at all should not be allowed. That's not what secret santa is about. Regardless of being able to, or not being able to track down items is irrelevant. The point of SS is the surprise. It's what makes it fun. If you want specific items, buy them yourself, obviously if you're participating in the price bracket of those items, you have the funds to do so.

Rather than gift lists, I'd prefer the format of last year's where people just mentioned their interests in the form.

For J-fashion this could be styles, substyles, main wardrobe colours and themes. For cosplayers(and this time I assume itabaggers) it was series they were interested in, colours and materials they might need, etc. While people were allowed to mention specifics e.g. they needed more accessories like wristcuffs, asking for particular pieces was discouraged.

Alot of anons mentioned their fave madcot characters, and some were interested in beauty products and included skin type/shade. There was also an option for whether handmade gifts were alright.

As much as last year had its flaws I think the google form and info it gave had a generally good result.

With all this discussion about restrictions and separating interests and knockoffs, I can only imagine some poor anon's going to give the wrong gift to someone on accident and cgl's going to go nuclear.

On that note, one of the only things that will 100% be not allowed are print replicas.
Design replicas and bootlegs (though I'm kind of against the latter) will be allowed provided someone is okay with it.

I just went to my local chinatown to shop for character goods last year because I didn't know what to get this cosplayer. I feel horrible now because I didn't know that was an issue. I just thought the sailor moon keychain was cute and that she wouldnt mind if it didnt have a package.

See this is why I feel bad about getting worried about bootlegs, since I don't want to discourage people, and in my Chinatown at least there are plenty of cute, non-bootleg items. Also I was thinking of more high-end items, and kind of forgot about simple stuff like pencils, pens, stationery, etc. that are harder to verify and confirm

I'll do it if theres anons into menhera and gurokawa participating. I know jack shit about lolita.

Also, what other boards do this? I mostly use /mu/ and everyone is a manchild who believes the roastie meme on there.
