I've got two large stiff rectangle pieces to make a fake obi and a bow like this. However I'm blanking on how to get them secured in the back. Originally it was going to be velcro but I think that might get annoying or snag.

I'm looking for a coin to complete a Two-Face getup but I'm having a dickens of a time finding a good inexpensive one.

I'm seeing a lot of two-headed Harvey Dent coins that are clean on both sides (and much cheaper, like 1/10th the price) - how hard would it be to scuff, scrape, and darken one side myself?

>>9662392

You want to look up tutorials for making tsuke obi. I've seen them done with large velcro pieces or ribbon ties, I'd suggest ribbon ties myself but I guess both are viable options. Would avoid snaps, they'll either open easily and therefore fall open easily when you don't want them to, or be really difficult to open when you actually do want to take your costume off.

Im building Bondrewd's helmet, and Im having trouble figuring out the shape of the faceplate.

I have the base for the rest of the helmet built already, and plans for the LED work and all, but I cant seem to figure out a pattern for the faceplate that curves both horizontally and vertically like I need it to.

Advice? Or other patterns I can use as a base?

I'm working on Weather Report's shirt and am going to do the holes as reverse appliques to give it stability. The problem is that I'm not sure what the best way to apply them is. I don't usually sew, but I'm not totally incompetent.

I have a cotton blend shirt as the base and beige upholstry vinyl as the applique material. I probably won't machine sew them since I don't have a machine and don't want to get one just for this project. My main problem is the patterns, I figure the simplest way to do it would be to cut out pieces of vinyl with the hole shape drawn on the back, sew them on, and then cut out the front. Are there better (cleaner looking) ways to do this? How do I get all the patterns aligned properly with the shirt (I know how they have to be positioned relative to each other)? Any tips for cutting out fabric from the applique window if I go with my method?

Not sure how well this will work without a machine though, especially if you're using cotton that will fray. It's going to be difficult to finish the edges of the shirt without a zigzag or satin stitch.

I saw that guide before but yeah, it's not incredibly useful since I probably won't use a machine, and if I did it would be a pain since my base is a pre-made garment. The base material is more cotton than spandex so it doesn't have to be stretched much when sewing.

Also the author doesn't point out when they cut the reverse applique into the spandex, did they just do it through the tear-away paper?

So I'm putting together a faily simple witch costume for halloween, and the only things I'm missing are a hat and a wand. Now the hats you can find everywhere, but I'm lost on the wand. Tried searching around in party shops and toy stores, and my only options seems to be Harry potter-replicas or sparkly fluffy glittery princess wands. I was thinking ordering from Amazon or Ebay, but I'm afraid they won't get here in time.

How difficult would it be to just pick up a twig from the ground and make one myself (similar pic related)? What would be the best method? Sand it down? Sealing it? Maybe colour it?

A smaller bra. It'll be like a corset. Because it's torture for your boobs.

>> No.9664416

>>9664250

You can try a sports bra, or see if your local places still has some of those cleavage-enchancing bras that work by pushing your boobs together. If you're just looking to reduce a little sometimes just having a sports bra or cleavage bra that essentially squishes your left and right together into a uniboob helps to make a bust shape that looks smaller because it's tightly packed together.

The old alternative to a binder is a load of medical tape (and baby oil/hot shower/a lot of patience to take it off with later), if you have a particular chest shape you need (eg if you need to wear an open chest shirt or something) then it's worthwhile to look into that instead.

Be careful with all the methods. If it's just worn once for a cosplay you should be fine. If you're wearing it over several days it could cause some deformities such as you boob fat starts growing to the side because your bra cup is too small, or something.

I have some parts of my costume that use faux fur with a 2-3" pile length. This is intended, because I need the texture it has when it's brushed/slicked down.

Issue is that since it's long, it has a tendency to fluff up with even slight movements. Is there a good styling product I can apply to synthetic fur to make it stay down while retaining a bit of waviness and not getting sticky? I'm going to try diluted school glue, g2b glue, and some generic hairspray on samples, but if there's a specific product or some other solution that isn't immediately obvious it'd be a great help to know beforehand.

>> No.9665577

>>9665289
Detangling spray isn't really useful for wigs since it's formulated for hair, which is made of keratin and coated in oils. Wig fibers are polyester, so the best solution for detangling is a bath with fabric softener (wig shampoo optional), and then just slowly working out the tangles by hand after you rinse and air-dry it.

Use an anti-static comb for wigs if you have one, not a brush or plastic comb (though imo brushing is fine, negative effects are only noticeable in the long term). Start at the scalp and work your way down, when you get to a tangle you hook from inside and gently pull it apart. Work in sections going around the wig, pulling the hair up and away as you go down. If you start fucking up, restart yhe section from the top.

Heat straighten and silicone spray if you can manage to completely detangle it. Again, work in sections going around when straightening. This'll give the wig a lot of longevity before it needs to be brushed again.

This. I think the cost alone is probably what decides it for most cosplayers. There's no big benefit to using real leather, the main problem with fake leathers is that they just don't last the same way real leather does, but most cosplayers aren't looking for something that will hold up for years and years of heavy use.

Yes but you'll need practise doing satin stitch (there are lots of tutorials for this). Also look at tutorials from people who make plushies, especially how they add the embroidered eyes.

You'll need felt or another stiff fabric in the same colour as your jumper to embroider the design onto. An embroidery hoop to keep it stable. Good quality embroidery thread such as DMC. You'll also need interfacing if the fabric you're sewing the insignia onto is stretchy.

Doing a backstitch around the edge of the design will help you keep your satin stitches straight.

So, I'm stuck on making my first prop. It doesn't seem too difficult in theory, but I'm stuck on the steps because I suck.

I plan on using a wooden dowel for the base of my staff, carved insulation foam for the top details, sand that, cover with masking tape and paper mache, gesso then paint. Making the jacket for a con, and was wondering how to secure the grey strip that runs lengthwise. I opted to do the full buttons to close the jacket, but now I'm wondering how to secure the strip as the material is super light and doesn't really fold down.

I'm thinking of putting in a magnet strip inside of the gray strip, and then putting in another magnet strip on the inside of the jacket. That way, there is no visible harness but it is secured well. It is also easy to take off but stays in place relatively well.

Does anyone have ideas on how to go about creating a "hiltless" katana like pic related? I'm assuming the highest quality result would be from shaping a wood plank, but I don't really have access to the tools or workspace to do precise woodworking.

A big problem is that it has to have a gentle curve, so many options based around using a perfectly straight base like a dowel that would give good stability are ruled out since they give unfavorable results.

For example, I've been thinking about using a rigid foam, but I'm afraid the sword I want to make (which is ~5 feet long) would be liable to snap even if I made it in segments that lock together. Otherwise I'd just get an 8x4ft board of insulation foam and cut it out.

Lots of shampoos and conditioners are designed to leave 'residue' on hair to make it shinier and smoother- look for sulphate, paraben and silicone free ones. You can even get clarifying shampoo which helps remove build up, and use that before you switch.

Also it sounds like you need to rinse more thoroughly. I have long hair and I have to spend time rubbing my scalp and finger combing though my hair in the shower to make sure my hair is properly clean. If your water pressure sucks, try taking down the shower head and holding it close to your hair while you rinse to help make the process easier.

I wanna dress as Arai-san

I mean.. it's perfect for the incoming winter season!

I have trouble finding what should I wear for the top.
I mean the rest is pretty easy, a black pleated skirt and some gray legwear I have those already.
But I can't find something that has the fluffy thing on the neck and the puffy sleeves.

I've seen some people using only a regular old blouse but that's pretty lame.
I hope there's an alternative since I can't sew those damn puffy sleeves myself.

The parts and skills you will need.

Leatherwork (belts, which you could maybe buy, and the straps on the legs)
sewing to make the cape, flowy shirt, and gloves.
sculpting- you will need it for the gloves which are fabric but structured, as well as the top bit of armor. You will have to sculpt the armor, the trim, and the filigree-thingies along the ends.
You'll need to mod the boots too.

And finally the belt buckles and the detail on the cape which could be interpreted as embroidery or metalwork

It will take you a while to get it right, because honestly this fashion is not made with large busts in mind. best first step is ALWAYS know your correct measurements, and never squeeze into something too small for you.

His hair doesn't actually have pigtails, those are spikes. I think it'd be easier to just spike up the back of the wig in chunks rather than use clips, plus it would look more accurate.

Also if you're buying from Arda you should probably get Kyle in a monotone blue. Nagisa's hair is cropped really close to his head and cutting a longer wig is going to look awkward even if you do it well. Kyle has longer bangs and hair on top for styling/spiking, and you can just leave the rest alone without having to worry about cutting.

I'll say right now (As I'm sure pic related will show) I'm no cosplay expert
This was the first prop I made, so hopefully my hassle can save you some headache later on.

There's no real 'scale' to go off of. I work in trades so I tried to draft them as well as I could based on my face. I have different advice based on what you're willing to work with. I tried to do mine with EVA foam and worbla (First time working with it, hence the less than smooth finish)
You essentially need to measure from your nose left/right, and straight out from your ear to find an intersecting point and take the measurements from there. The side going from your ear will be longer. Cut 4 of those triangles and cut an angle on the top piece to accommodate your brow (For me, it was 30 degrees exactly) the bottom piece may not need any angle to stay level on your face. Get a few pieces to function as the bars for the glasses, reinforce them as required and attach the top and bottom pieces. I used an elastic strap to attach them...explaining the side pieces may be a bit too complicated for text. Let me see if I can find my draft prints again.

My suggestion for the holes would be to buy a set of curtain eyelets, like in pic related. There's a nice vid here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CV3a92DikEo of how to attach them.
As for the sleeves, I'd personally interpret those as being quite a chunky ribbed knit fabric. If you'd rather them by 'flat' like in the pic, you could try to find a white fabric with thin black stripes (ticking fabric?) and dye it purple, since obviously the black won't take the dye but the white will.

Can anyone help me, please?

Just a tip, but for props that look shiny I would recommend using a glossy, non-metallic spraypaint in the future.

I personally think glossy flat paint looks much better than anything metallic, and brushing will always give you messy results compared to spraypaint. Or at least use sponge brushes instead of hair brushes.

Anyone know where to get fish scale fabric? I keep getting shiny green ones or complete off green ones. Would love to find this exact color, which seems to be a generic green, but not findable on eBay.

Those shoes. Knee high boots? Thigh highs? Or make them yourself? In that case, how? I've been turning eBay upside down the past hour in hopes to find something that resembles this and that I can continue to work on.

Any tips?

Just get regular boots, then the part that sticks up on the side you can craft from leather or fake leather with buckles, and just strap them over the boots

I don't see any dumb questions thread, so I'll drop this here.

I've never cosplayed before, but it's been a dream of mine to cosplay Aigis ever since I was a kid playing P3. Anyone here have an idea of how much it would cost to get her commissioned? I'd be looking to get basically everything but the wig done by someone as I have very minimal sewing experience. I don't even know what to put down as my budget when contacting a commissioner, because I have no idea what's reasonable and don't want to get A) ignored for putting too small an amount down or B) scalped because I'm an idiot and offered way more than it's worth.

Knocking around ideas for a Phos cosplay now that the anime is out. But this hair... should I just spike a vocaloid green wig or try to do something more interesting to create a headpiece that catches light? I feel like the latter has too much potential to look like shit. I do feel like the luminescent gem hair is the really iconic aspect of this anime.

I think a smart idea would be to approach a custom bodysuit maker, and then all you need is the headphones and the arm thingy. For the bodysuit pattern and printing I would expect about 250eu, for the headphones and arm 100eu if you can find a nice maker. And add the bow and you're done.

If you're good at sewing I'd say using a cyan version of this kind of fabric would work best:
http://www.mjtrends.com/products.Blue,clear-vinyl-material,Fabric#.Wghc98Zl_IU
Stuff it with something opaque like thin upholstery foam to hide your real hair and attach wig grips to the inside to attach it.
As long as your stitches and seams are neat and you pay attention to shapes in your references images, I think it could look really good.

Didn’t see a suggestion thread in the catalog, so I’ll ask here.

I want my next project to be a hand-sewing nightmare. I’ve done big Armor builds and giant dresses but I really would love to do a ton of hand embroidery. Aside from ‘A Bride’s Story’ (pictured) can anyone recommend a series and character (preferably female) that I could incorporate a lot of hand-embroidery into? Many thanks!

Hi! I have a quick question about how yahoo auctions work. At the end of an auction, does the winning bidder pay the amount of their highest bid, or the highest bid that they've beaten? (E.G. if the current bid is 200, and i bid 300 and win with that bid, do I end up paying 200 or 300 at the end of the auction?)

Always contact the commissionaire first and ask how much it would cost for whatever level of detail you want, then worry about negotiating it down/removing details to lower the price. Don't tell them your budget, especially don't tell them your budget and say "this is my budget". They want your money, so they're not gonna block you and send their assassins to kill you in real life if you step out of line.

I was thinking about Houseki no Kuni cosplay a while ago and the best looking way would probably be either vinyl fabric like >>9690913 suggested sewn like a plush with some kind of metallic spandex as the "scalp", or acrylic sheets heat formed and glued together to make a solid piece.

Fabric option is going to require some ingenuity to make it stay rigid, but it would theoretically have a bit of flowey-ness to it since the material is soft. Acrylic option would be rigid by nature but a bitch to work with.

Third last resort option would be to get a cyan wig and just hair glue the shit out of it like Steven Universe gem cosplays, with the major downsides being no transparency and obvious hair texture. However, it'd be the easiest/fastest way to get the style and general appearance down.
