Howloween edition
Post fursuit/mascot pics, questions, stories and anything else fursuit related.

Frequently asked questions:
>How much is a new suit
Expect to pay at least 2k for a fullsuit commission, 3k+ for something padded, and higher if a realistic suit. Heads typically go for 400-1k, partials 900-1.5k.
>Where to buy second hand?
https://www.furbuy.com/
https://www.thedealersden.com/
occasionally the 'fursuit' tag on furaffinity.
>What about Japanese suits?
list of makers and other relevant kemono suit info
https://www.furaffinity.net/journal/6993893/
>fur supplies?
Fabric.com and fursuitingsupplies.com, Mendels if you want higher-quality stuff. Also try "I'm Stuffed Fur" and "CR Crafts"
>Foam?
I usually buy mine in bulk off Amazon.
High density for heads, med/low for body/padding.
You can get decent discounts from jo-anns as well.
>How to clean?
I prefer handwashing with woolite. Don't use a dryer unless it has a cool setting, you'll melt the fur.

I noticed the same problem with my lucario (it was a bit better than yours). I opened the mouth up and also opened up the ears, since they're more 3d -ish they kinda act like those vents in car garages. There's an usb fan in the nozzle, powered by a powerbank.
I've also seen heads with extra holes in the foam/base to allow more breathing through the fur fabric in cases of bad ventilation (kemono heads for example tend to have small nozzles, no room for a fan and also non-breathable eyes and mouth).

Depends on what fan you choose. Mine is quite silent, I don't notice it. But I do recommend choosing a silent fan, since you will hear it for sure since it's inside your mask.

t b h, it's really not all that bad.
USUALLY it's one time deal with suits. there are the people who do commission multiple suits, but that's really not as common.
compare that to people into jfash with large wardrobes. there's a ton of people who buy exclusively brand on here, and that can be a minimum of 400/set even. when there's so many people picking up multiple dresses a year- it adds up preeeetty fast!

On my hoshiikins ears, they edges are heat treated in some way to where the fur just looks like a seamless edge.

On ears I have made, and what it looks like in this picture, I sew them together and pick all of the trapped fur out of the seam, which basically will not show a seam much, or if at all.

Had a idea for a suit, but not sure if I'll ever actually do it, so hence the initial idea "sketch" being here.
Mostly because to this day I have never seen a good shark outfit (or even a decent shark that actually looks like a shark for that matter) for this I referenced actual sharks (Internet cookie if you can guess species) and tried to keep it as on reference as possible (less than realistic eyes aside). Intended to be made with a lycra skin and be form fitting on the front of the torso, hands(webbed)/arms and around the front of the legs.
Main reason I'm not sure if I'll do it, wanted to have the front fins of the shark be the legs of the wearer, but there's no real way to incorporate the feet into it without the fins either being wrong, or having the feet being basically vertical.

I think plain black or grey socks or ballet slippers would work best. They'd make the feet look as small and smooth as possible. Stuffed blob feet would look bizarre and draw too much attention, and anthropomorphizing the feet would look bad and fall into the same pitfalls most anthro aquatics fall into. There's no reason for a fish to have claws. You can't not have feet, but a small and discreet footwear at least isn't shoehorning your feet into the design in a way that compromises the design.

By blob feet I meant indistinct and without defined detail, as opposed to having the toes being separate, detailed and a part of the costume. So effectively more or less what you suggested.
Not that I probably would in the end, but if it were to go on the anthropomorphize the feet route, not having it clawed would be inconsistent with the hands, which would be. Webbed hands without claws doesn't look right, unless it's supposed to be integrated into a full arm fin in such a way that the hand's supposed to be lost into the fin, which usually looks kinda goofy.

That's what I was thinking of, but that brings a couple more issues. But for this hypothetical costume specifically, on a major note, as it is right now the front shark fins are the legs of the wearer, and the arms are there in a kinda taur-like fashion. Moving those fins to the arms makes the leg problem even more of a problem, with the dinky hind fins these sharks have, it'd be even worse to try to hide / not draw attention to a entire leg instead of a foot. On a minor note, arm fins make me think of a normie meme from a year or so ago involving sharks that I'd never be able to shake the reminder of.

It's a thought, but personally I prefer to make costumes that look good in motion, even if I'm well aware people take more still images than video. Coral feet would both look awkward to walk with, and because most if not all species of not dead coral are rather brightly coloured, they'd draw attention away from the borderline greyscale (mild pun intended) of the rest of the costume.
Mermaid rock works for mermaids, because other than literally having your legs tied together in a wheel chair, there aren't many other options. But again, for the shark it comes back to the "What looks good in motion" thing.
>>9676350
Agreed. Although just about every foot option isn't optimal, the thing nearly all anthro sharks, costume or not, completely miss about sharks is the living torpedo shape with no unflowing irregularities along the body that they're so characteristically known for. Of course you're going to loose some of that grafting it to the human body, but it's doable to still have some of that sleekness when anthropomorphized. Sleek foot jives the best with that.

Personally, was thinking of a harp seal costume, done like small Santa ( Body in sack hands and arms become feet legs and torso of character.) But you are right. That would work well in a wheelchair.

What our original poster is talking about here, is a variation on a mermaid costume. vaguely humanoid torso and shark tail.

I'd like to, (wouldn't of gone past the "what if" stage if I didn't) but if I ever were to, it'd be a long way off from now, between the lack of funds and the other costumes that need refurbishing or complete start overs first.

Can I ask what you think will happen if people find out you have a fursuit? I was really anxious about my family finding out for a while but eventually I just told them because it let me store my suit way easier than trying to hide it. They asked what it was about and I just explained that I enjoyed the performing aspect of it (probably helped that they've both helped the local drama society in recent years) and they were fine with it.
Like that other anon said, if you want to wear it out to a convention or a meetup people are gonna at least see your face during the periods you don't have your mask on.
Normies are generally pretty receptive when they see a group of costumers out and about, especially if they're with kids who aren't afraid of mascot costumes (funnily enough I was when I was very young). The mentality that furries are widely despised is echoed a lot on 4chan but it doesn't carry over to real life since most people either don't know or care about the sexual side of the fandom which is what gets pushed the most online.
My favorite example of internet blowhards amounting to nothing was back in 2008-2009 on /b/ when there were a number of continuous threads on /b/ organising a protest and blockade at some furry con, threads full of people all organising when and where to meet, what they were going to bring, signs to make and all that razz. THREE people turned up, and they took shelter inside the convention when it started to rain.
I should try and dig those screencaps up from my /b/ folder at some point, I will never not love that rich example of internet vitriol amounting to jack shit.

Short answer: no.
For any costumery, the only real limiter is whether you can achieve the look of the costume that you're wearing well. With cosplay, any exposed body parts account for how good said cosplay is, so a wrinkly guy trying to cosplay a 16 year old isn't going to work. That's not really a problem with fursuiting, 'cause your completely covered up. If you're physically fit enough for it, anyone should go for it regardless of age.
Now being a anthropomorphic blob trying to fursuit on the other hand...

No idea how heavy they are, but that looks like it'll be prone to pulling you backwards, having all of that extra weight sitting so far above your center of gravity.
Do they swivel back? 'cause I can guarantee you that even at that folded size it'll be nigh on impossible to walk about anywhere that isn't the middle of a open field if they don't.
Good on you though for having both wings on one actuator. Even after seeing this I know I'd never go about doing that, I like excessively fine control of body parts too much, even at the expense of practicality.

Yeah I noticed it was swinging a little bit on the highest point, I will probably slide some joints to make them sit a little lower (everything is not attached solid yet). I can see I would have to stand extremely straight when they are unfolded at the height theyre sitting now.
Atleast the frame is holding up very well even when i'm holding it horizontal.
The frame itself is 3KG in total atm.

I'll do that when I have another actuator since that means I have to redesign my parts that attach to the actuator, and i'm swapping it out for a faster one first.
I don't intend on wearing this on a con floor, that would call for extreme problems.

Even at where you red lined, yea, probably not the best for cramped convention halls. (Possibly doable if careful and folded, but the hassle being worth it is purely subjective.) But there's still doorways and furniture to be navigated. I've knocked my fair share of table items and heads with even kinda undersized wings to know that you'll never get away from the space they take up.
When you do redesign to account for swivel, would it be possible to flip the lift actuator around so most of the weight sits in the dip of the back, instead of right below and behind the head, or would that muck up the mechanics / intended design too much?

I'd like someone's opinion on makers. I want to get a Kemono style suit, but my character has no eyes. I want to make sure I get a maker that is really polished with bodysuits and muzzles, because the eyes won't be the center piece. I've had a look around, but does anyone have a recommendation?

That's exactly why it's annoying. There's hundreds of kemono suits but people feel that rufen is the default and they copy it. That’s far from what I wanted to do.
I made the discord because of how these threads usually go. Eventually some anons bitch about how it’s either furry related or not cosplay/costume related, then janitors start deleting the threads; then discussion ceases. I like seeing people be interested in fursuits as a craft.

I myself refrain from posting links or just handing them out unless people ask. The discord was a made as a precaution around this time last year actually.

While wigs on fursuits isn't unheard of, it can be hard to pull off. The biggest issue is the wig being too small for a fursuit head shape/size. The fursuits that do it well seem to take more than one wig and reconstruct it.

>> No.9691739

>>9691200
For me it's been people either not respecting my suit (pulling on the ears, the back bow/wings or otherwise) or they get aggressive with physical affection. Unfortunately I do have to get one of my suit's "ears" resewn on because someone yanked really hard and I couldn't react fast enough (They were taller and came from behind so I couldn't see haha). My suit handler told them to back off.

I get the whole "people are gonna wanna hug the giant stuffed animal" thing but there's been times where I'm trying to rush to the lounge or to leave and someone forces me into a hug or something. Like, I get pulled into it or they assume a hug is fine. It's normally the socially retarded types but then you of course get the normies or the people who think a suit means you're a free for all.

If you guys need advice, here's my top three-
1. Don't suit alone in public. If you're at a con, you should still have someone to have your back.
2. Beware of drunks. They will appear, especially at cons. They will not respect you or your costume.
3. If you need to take the head off, do it. Tell them to fuck off. You're still a person and you need to take care of your needs first. If a person makes you uncomfortable, just say no. Breaking the magic is less for the people around you (except maybe kids) and more for your personal privacy as a performer and person.

after everything that's gone on with anw in the past couple days, i imagine it's on purpose to try to sabotage RF 2.0 even more
the cons fucked up almost every aspect of a con to begin with
i doubt there will be an anw 2018

aw man that sucks, we recently had someone grabbed by a member of the public during a fursuit walk at a meet as a "hey come be in a photo with me" thing. I don't think the person was being malicious, just socially retarded like you said. So far in my short time in the community I've been lucky enough to only have positive interactions and I hope it stays that way

On a different note: I just got commissioned to make a flammie plush! Very much looking forward to make this.

Some people just don't realize there's an actual human being in a suit or cosplay, so they get unnecessarily aggressive or affectionate.. It happens to all who don't not look like a regular dressed person.
I've had a drunk person break my costume before, I learned to be very wary of drunk people now and not rely on con security to throw them out.
Other than that not so much, maybe the occassional socially lacking person going batshit affectionate over my suit or on how much they love the character.
I prefer to build all my outfits sturdy enough now to handle most of this without breaking, and I tend to sacrifice looks more for comfortability and visibility rather than before.

The proportions are really wonky (head width, for one) and the markings on the thighs are unflattering and makes it look more like someone carrying massive pouchs on their chaps than a digigrade suit.

I think it's a really cool look, I don't think the suit owner is one of the peoples w a fetish for it, just aesthetic. could be wrong though!! (its yami's suit)
I have a character with hypno eyes but I'm not 'into' it.

>> No.9693602

>>9693586
It's hit or miss imo, it can create a very unique look for your character instead of all the generic toony eyes, or be completely missing the ball and look off. For hyenas and suits with more softer color design I think it works very well, but if you already have a very busy pattern or a very bright color palette, it's going to be too much. Your colors are quite muted, so I think it goes very well!

For fabric, the faux fur was about 20usd a yard and the minky for the spikes was 13usd a yard.

But I made the insides are made of upholstery foam which I paid $16 a roll, yoga mat 15$-20$, and floor foam, which is like $20 for a four pack.

But honestly I wouldn't be able to tell you how much I spent just on the tail. Its my first fursuit and ive messed up a lot, so I have had a bunch of wasted materials.

The base is 3d printed, the back of the head and ears are there for patterns so it's not as detailed. Will post my progress in the threads (next thread)
