I'm 28. I just now have some extra money to blow and I want to start a bag. No other reason than it seems like a fun hobby to search for my rare husbando merch. Unless I go to a con, I don't think I'll ever wear it out. But it will look nice in my room cause I'm a creative hermit.

Anyone here around my age? I would think so, as an adult with a job and living alone, I can spend my money however I please. Or are there 16yos who have a part time job and show off their weeb at school? Or maybe your parents like your hobby and support it? I'm just curious.

I have a plan to insert lights in mine, I see most people use string fairy lights. Depending on the type of bag you have, it could be harder to hide the battery pack.
I plan on using a foam insert and carefully threading the LEDs through so the metal doesn't show and only the light bulb is visible. You could probably hide the battery back behind an insert. My bag has some space under the clear cutout covered up, so I can just hide it down there.

I'm pretty sure there's people who make a pretty profit putting together lots on yahoo auctions from these racks and selling them to gaijin and otaku who can't afford to travel to the big cities. So unless that lot had 150-200 there's not much a deal there. Those bags are somewhat rare but even $100 for both is pushing it. I saw the pink backpack in the heart of Akiba for 4000 yen.

Depends on the bootleg, I think only the swimmer knock off is considered decent quality (some anons seem to prefer the faux leather over canvas). Avoid heart windows unless you're going to heavily mod and the To Alice bootlegs are by far the worst quality (even their sales pics show broken bags). There's some really nice bags on taobao that are better quality than Japanese bags, for example I own a random taobao bag with a much nicer window than my Salus. Tldr you get what you pay for, never buy from English Amazon or eBay they're cheaper elsewhere.

I feel like this would be a lot of fun and I've been lurking here and looking at the FAQ a few times over. My husbando isn't technically anime and has zero merch which is the biggest thing stopping me. I'm going to have to create or commission everything for it. That in itself could be a really entertaining time though I suppose. There are plenty of Amalthea items but I have hardly if ever seen things with best wizard on them.

Those of you with obscure husbandos: Have you commissioned items of them? Any recommendations for artists?

>> No.9700742

I don't have a super obscure husbando, but I like supporting indie artists and having merch that other fans don't have (laughs awkwardly)

To answer your question, what kind of items are you looking for? Plush? Can Badge? Charm?

Any particular style? Budget?

Personally, I also like browsing the Artist Alley Network International (FB group) for styles that I may be interested in and then PM'ing the artist if they did commissions.

My least expensive bag was $120. My most expensive bag is about $500.

I think average for a "completed" standard sized bag is about $200~$300, but it varies widely depending on the fandom, character tax, availability of merchandise, and if you have any particularly expensive limited release "holy grail" items you're seeking which I usually see people mention snagging for around $30 - $60 each.

I have multiple tote bags that are all fan made merch, and for me personally it's more expensive than my official merch bags. I don't really keep track of of totals since its pretty bittersweet, but including merch, base bags, decorations/stuff to make inserts, I'm probably somewhere close to $1k.

When I started with baby's first bag before I was truly in this hell of a hobby, I filled my heart bag for probably ~$200.

It's not a lot of merch but imo it does show an impressive level of dedication and creativity to showcase your love for a certain character, so it might not be an itabag in the traditional sense but I think it still carries the idea of it, you know?

>> No.9701420

>>9701414
It's not an unpopular opinion.
It's actually a trend that tracks across cultural bounds - bags with a heavy focus on multiples are more common in japan, and bags with a heavy focus on unique product are more popular in other countries. A large part of it has to do with how merchandise is obtained, fans who have to handle proxies and importing and scalping are more likely to want to have different things to show for their efforts. Obtaining large sets of multiples is far easier for Japanese fans, too, and makes it an easier entry level method that levels up to super intense super easily.

>> No.9701425

>>9701414
It varies by culture I believe because in Japan if you go to one of those limited cafes or special events where you get blind packs there's usually an area for trading. The experience is a lot more social and having a bag like >>9691523 is more common. Also, a lot of series have to really take of before they get merch that isn't super cheap and easy to produce like can badges. Meanwhile in the west it's pretty hard to find huge sets of multiples without doing serious damage to your finances. Also, by the time a lot of merch reaches the US there's not a lot of money, if any, that's going towards the original creators. So I think in the west we gravitate towards collecting a variety since it's easier and emphasis is more on finding each type of merch rather than the social aspect of collecting.

>> No.9701430

>>9701419
That's a good way of looking at it! I might build one for one or two of my obscure comic waifus. It would be a nice alternative to no official merch, and I as a BJD person it's right up my alley!

>> No.9701431

>>9701414
Well in Japan you have to actually go and blindbag/gashapon for stuff so you end up pulling a LOT of merch and you have to do something with it. Meanwhile over here in the West shit is so expensive you're not going to pay $10 per badge for identical badges when you can spend that other $10 on something else that a japanese fan put into a resale shop.

>I like supporting indie artists and having merch that other fans don't have
I like this too! It's nice owning something special and I love supporting artists.

It's hard to describe what style I like, and sometimes I can be picky but I'm looking for unique styles that are not overly Animu. More illustrative if that makes sense. I don't have a set budget. I would like acrylic charms, buttons, (if enamel pins existed of him I would die but there's no real way to commission those because of the minimum the artist would have to order right?) Etc. I make plush so I'm not looking for those and I'm unsure if I would want one for it. Getting a bag will be my first step I think. I found pic related on Etsy and might incorporate it somehow? I don't want too much that's not my main guy in there but since it's relevant and I like the style so I was toying with the idea.

I'll check out AANI as well! That's a good suggestion.

Right now I'd guess $200 for when I started buying items dedicated for an itabag.

Anyone have any more elegant dialovers bags? I'm making an azusa itabag, but it's not like pic related, the base bag is the swimmer knock off. Would love to see more of the series in general!

My proxy says I've spent 300 since April. Though some of that was holding fees

I have character tax on mine. It cost me $30 per strap and I own 9 of the same so you can imagine how much this has cost me.

People who think they can make a whole bag for $200 are either after unpopular chars with little merch or are buying bootlegs like that sad bag posted above.

Or an older series with lots of merch. Zelos from Tales of Symphonia had a shit ton of official merch available secondhand for 100-300 yen each.

I keep seeing this happen, is it really salty of me to think this is kinda rude? Like is it really too much trouble to make your own post?

Zelos is shit taste so I'm not surprised.

Zelos is a very sad man hiding behind a cheerful facade and I love him.

But actually the low price is because Zelos is always in the phone games and spin offs and crossovers because he's the regular in-character MC. Because of that he's been getting new merchandise consistently ever since Symphonia came out in 2003. The same is true for Lloyd, he's in most of the crossovers and keeps getting merch, so it's all cheap.

I never understood people who commented they were following? You can be subtle about it and just like the post and you'll get a notification if there's a comment.

But yeah, I think its rude/lazy.

Crappy pic and near-dead thread, but I feel like posting my Dunsparce wip anyways. I don't know whether I want to add more cards like on the right, or leave the bottom more open to fill with little resin sprite pieces like on the left. Also debating on whether or not I want to try and fit the little plush in.

What are you talking about? A base bag is at least $20. If you fill it with 10 items worth $10 each that's $130 off the bat. If you're making a small bag that's pretty reasonable, but if you're filling something A4 or A3 then $200+ is the complete norm, most bags you see cost at least $500. If you can't afford $200 get the hell out of this thread instead of bitching, you clearly don't belong here (I mean your bag proves that)

I was going to say, halfway through my bag had already cost me around $300...

Not at all, it's rude to piggyback off of someone else's request imo.

I wish you luck anon! I love seeing people dedicated enough to make bags for such niche characters. Maybe for some filller, you could make some little charms of the movie/book covers? Or if Schmendrick(sp?) has any lines that are really memorable or just really /him/ you could make a little piece with them in a really nice font? I'd love to be able to suggest some, but I haven't read the book and it's been years since I've seen the movie.

> Lots of discussion about cost of a bag, most anons agree that it can vary wildly depending on size, subject, etc.
>You waltz in, make shit generalizations, and say people don't belong here if they aren't willing to drop x amount
I'm sorry about your character tax, but having to deal with it gives you no goddamn right to lord over everyone else. Besides, acting like money is the only thing that matters in a good bag is dumb as hell.

Also,
>Shitting on someone for a wip bag
>Assuming this wip is my only bag
Good lord, it's a bag for and old and hardly loved pokemon. If Dunsparce had more official merch, you bet your ass I'd be buying it. Don't assume everyone loves and makes bags for hugeass things with loads of merch. And don't assume that everyone wants huge/multiple bags for everything. If you do, you clearly haven't been in these threads very long.

anon, i can appreciate your pain with character tax as someone who had to drop $50 on a single can badge recently, but you still need to relax. there are so many ways to get merch and fill bags these days you can't really put hard numbers on the price anymore.

I’ve spent near enough £600 on my bag but I bought an item every time I had spare money, it’s took me a good while to build it up but I’d rather take my time and have good quality items than splurge on trash. It’s the same with all the poor fags in the Lolita community, hobbies are expensive, either splurge on good items and and look good or don’t and look subpar, It’s really that simple.

Anyone ever try to make an italaptop? Like having a clear "case" for your laptop that you fill with badges or rubber straps.
