Mine was basically one of the last posts, so I’ll try again in a fresh thread. I didn’t see a suggestion thread in the catalog, so I’ll ask here.

I want my next project to be a hand-sewing nightmare. I’ve done big Armor builds and giant dresses but I really would love to do a ton of hand embroidery. Aside from ‘A Bride’s Story’ (pictured) can anyone recommend a series and character (preferably female) that I could incorporate a lot of hand-embroidery into? Many thanks!

For something similar I used upholstery foam for the filling, fabric sewn into a tube for for the detailing on the outside. A similar method worked for the harness too.

Styling my first wig, does anyone have any tips or tricks for making spikes look better? They're just extremely basic spikes that don't even need support, but this is my first time spending so much time to figure it out that I'm swamped.

The hairspray keeps sticking to my fingers, and it's making it a lot more difficult than it should be. It's really making the forming of the sharp spikes tough.

Also, the front spike is not holding together well (it's splintering into several "formed" sections). Should I just fabric glue to secure it or can I use superglue or something?

What is a good material that is 4 way stretch but see through?
I have been looking at things like cheese-cloth but its not stretchy from what I've found. I'll be using it over a thicker material that has small eye holes cut out for a pullover mask so it needs to have fairly good visibility.

Even just a recommendation for a type of fabric would be a big help as Im at a loss for names of fabrics like this.

You honestly don't really need much else than a wig and wig cap
When you receive the wig they usually come in a plastic bag with a really thin net around them, and I've found just storing them like that is the most convenient way since they take up very little space and don't tangle that much with the net

I'd recommend a brush like this: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Kemei-Professional-Anti-Static-Steel-Comb-Brush-For-Wig-Hair-Extensions-Training-Head-B118/32808247448.html?spm=2114.search0104.3.80.nCPKG2&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_4_10152_10065_10151_10344_10068_10345_10342_10343_10340_10341_10171_10541_10562_10084_10083_10307_10301_10303_10060_10155_5680017_10154_10056_10055_10539_10312_10059_10313_10314_10534_10533_100031_10103_10073_10102_10594_10557_10596_10142_10107,searchweb201603_25,ppcSwitch_5&btsid=69ddf97e-d3be-41ad-9b94-1583309f5eac&algo_expid=18cd7232-46d1-4727-89ca-056044caa5ca-10&algo_pvid=18cd7232-46d1-4727-89ca-056044caa5ca

If you're gonne be very active in the wig, it's a really good idea to sew a couple of these around the edges of the wig, it'll make it stay on much better and you won't have any problems with it slipping around: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/50pcs-2-3cm-hair-snap-clips-for-extensions-U-Shape-weave-toupee-wig-6-teeth-clips/32804920064.html?spm=2114.10010108.1000013.19.625a17c2NwpiM0&traffic_analysisId=recommend_2088_10_90158_shotall&scm=1007.13339.90158.0&pvid=3ae491a1-5df4-45eb-980f-5e7500e75a3c&tpp=1

Lastly, you might wanna get some hair cutting scissors (they don't have to be super expensive, but don't buy the cheapest ones either), because most wigs require a little bit of trimming, usually around the bangs
Check youtube if you need any help with cutting, there are so many great tutorials out there

Good luck anon!

No problems!
Hair clips really aren't super important, I just like them if I'm wearing the wig casually, because no matter what it won't come off, so it's a bit reassuring
If you're scared about cutting the wig, try getting a really cheap wig or two (like $5) and experimenting on them first
You don't have to be a pro, but being able to trim the bangs is really super useful, especially if you're going to get more wigs in the future

If you want to try cutting bangs, the most important things are to not just take a piece and chop it off, but do it like pic related
Also, kinda obvious, but go longer than you think you want it at first, and then adjust. Same goes for how wide you want the bangs to be, cut a really small section first and then go wider

Sorry for info bombing you anon haha, just felt like giving you some tips I find important
Also, that wig is really cute, good choice!

Thank you once again, all this is really useful.
Looking at the wigs I'm going to get, I don't think they will have any bangs to be cut, but I think I will use this advice once (if?) I decide to get a hime cut wig.
Looking through some wig listings on Taobao I have noticed few photos of packaged wigs with the nets you have mentioned, it really seems like a good way to store them.
And the clips sound like they could really be nice, if I got courage to ever go out in a wig.

Like the other anon said, usually the bangs look way better if you trim them, because they are usually made too long so that you can customize them yourself, since everyone face is different, and if they had pre-cut bangs they might be too short for some people
Trimming the bangs vs just swiping them to the side can make a huge difference, and make your wig look tons better
Not trying to be mean or anything, and this is just my opinion, if you think your wig looks great, why the heck should you cut the bangs just because someone on the internet said so haha

Lastly, since you mentioned going outside in wigs, something that I think helps make a wig look less like a wig is wearing hair accessories, like hairbands, hats and bows
Hope you have fun with your wigs anon!

Like pic related. Starts off as a long-ass rectangle of fabric. Hem gets scalloped. It's sewn into a tube maybe double the width of your hips, then gathered like a motherfucker and the waistband's added. Obviously, you'd want to wear some sort of petticoat underneath it to make sure it keeps its volume. Bonus points for having a high waistband to hide all the gathering wrinkles underneath the top dress.

What are some face paints that are easily appliable, for full body use?
And what are the best ways to seal those kinds of face paints?
sorry if this is a stupid question

>> No.9695523

>>9695499
Cheap: Snazaroo, Ruby Red
Pros: easy to apply, easy to obtain, cheap.
Cons: easily washes off, not as pigmented as other brands

Longlasting: alcohol based paints like ProAiir
Pros: long lasting, vibrant colors, water proof
Cons: best applied with an airbrush (expensive), harder to obtain, must be removed with alcohol

Most body paints are set with setting spray or powder (check out Ben Nye's Final Seal/Banana Powder or Mehron's Barrier Spray). Water based can be set with both, cream based should be set with only powder. Make sure you test how your powder will photograph (make sure there's no flashback) and apply only what you need. Even so, don't touch people/things if you don't need to, it will protect your paint and other people's stuff.

Highly recommend tights for your arms/legs.

Homestucks have been doing this for years, check out their tutorials. There's a pastebin with links in their general.

How can I get rid of the pits in a wand I'm making? I've tried sanding it down but it flakes again and makes more pits. Was it the materials I used? I used spackle because no one had plastor at the time. I sanded it as closely as I could and even have some primer on it but it's pretty noticeable.
Any recommendations?

It looks like a stretch faux-leather. There's a sort of waffle texture, and a slightly mottled colouring to it, though good luck finding the right fabric with both of those things.
There's also a lot of discussion here about it:

>>9696420
Water activated paints are definitely easier to apply. FAB and Graftobian (company that makes ProPaints) are both well respected in the face painting world, you'll be good with those. I merely recommended Snaz because its cheap and easy to find. If you decide on FAB, know that FAB, Wolfe FX, Diamond FX, TAG, and Global are are all literally the same paints, made in the same factory, branded differently. Get whichever one is cheaper. Graftobian, Cameleon, Mehron, Ben Nye, and Kryolan are also good professional brands that have different formulations.

You absolutely need to seal water based paints. They are the most likely to come off, because your sweat is water. When water based paints "set" they become dry to the touch (as opposed to cream based paints like Mehron's Clown White, which will always remain tacky to the touch). However, as an added layer of protection, use setting spray and powder. This is will greatly improve their longevity.

I want to go to AWA next year and I've got questions:

Is it possible to bring my dog? She and I go everywhere together (except to work but I'm working on changing that) and while she isn't my service dog we are working towards being a K9 SAR team. I looked at the FAQ and everything for AWA but it has absolutely nothing in there about dogs. She is up-to-date on everything and isn't trouble at all (since she has to be disciplined to be SAR in the first place and have the canine good citizen stuff and all that). I thought that even if it was allowed she would have to be extra good around people and their costumes and such and that was a concern because if she gets a good amount of attention she will lightly hop up on people and return affection straight to your face. Of course, she'd be on leash at all times.

I also thought of volunteering for their first-aid group and since she is trained to carry some of the equipment (she is also in the process of being trained as a comforting presence during SAR) like bandages, a blanket, and extra water. I highly doubt that'd be necessary there but yeah.

I was thinking of all that and if she can go I'd like to dress up as an Overseer from Dishonored and have her be one of the Wolfhounds that they use. I think it'd be pretty fun.

I ask here because I couldn't find a thread on AWA and was just wondering if anyone else might know anything.

That's what happens with zigzag, because it leaves space in the width between. If your machine has a stretch stitch, use that (it kinda looks like a zigzag but more shaped like a thunder symbol). If not there's not much you can do about it except for maybe use a smaller width stitch.

Would definitely build the wig like the boob tutorial: use upholstery foam to shape the wig then cover it in fabric such as pantyhose etc (use fabric close to the end color), try to hide the seams as much as possible. Then a layer of latex and paint.

A seifuku is just a modified blouse and a pleated skirt. I'd imagine you could buy a cheap yet nice-fitting blouse and tear it down to get the basic pattern. Make the neckline rectangular and the collar is just a big rectangular piece with one half patterned around the neckline. Pleated skirt patterns should be pretty common since it's such a common piece of clothing.

I'm planning on making an FMA uniform and i'm not exactly sure what to do about the trim. I'm going to use either piping or bias tape. My concern with piping is that it might look too thin. My issue with bias tape is that im not exactly sure how to apply it here. I would like to line the jacket for comfort and to hide the interfacing which means that the edges will be two layers of fabric. if I sew it like id normally sew a jacket and apply the trim over a turned seam i feel like ill have trouble with the thickness even if i trim the seam allowance pretty close. would it make sense to just not add a seam allowance or sew the seam but to baste it wrong sides together and then apply the tape on the raw edges? sorry if this is badly worded. thanks in advance

My advice would be to trim your seam allowances before turning right-side-out to make sure they're narrower than the edge of the bias tape. So that if you wanted 1/2" bias tape on each side, you'd trim the seam allowances to be 1/4", for example. Added bonus there of enclosing the seam allowances and making them even less likely to fray. It shouldn't look very bulky, you can look up images of jackets with bound lapels to set your mind at ease on that score.

Having never worked with wigs before, I can see two ways to approach it from a construction standpoint.

The first is to buy a wig with long enough hair, and then use shapes of cardboard or foam to hold things into position in combination with glue and hairspray to keep the hair in place on those shapes.

The second, and I'm not sure if this even really works or not, is to have the wig actually be in two pieces: a short cut traditional wig, and then a second piece that is the wavy 'horns' bit that wraps around your head on three sides, probably held in place with a headband or balanced on your ears like glasses.

Again, not an expert. Just spitballing how I would attempt this if I had to try.

Pepakura is software that takes 3D models and 'unfolds' them into a set of flat patterns. You print off the patterns, cut them out and fold them into the 3d shapes to make paper models.
What a lot of people do these days is use the paper patterns as templates to cut foams, then make the models out of foam. Loads of great videos out there, they will hold your hand. It's intimidating at first, but once you're doing it you see it's not so bad.

What characters would work for someone that wants to show off their guns, I'm on the leaner ripped side with wider abdomen from powerlifting.

I find that a good base for close-fitting Jojo cosplay is to get a set of thermal underwear in the desired desired color so you have consistent material. Modify the top, using the excess material from the sleeves/chest to make the straps and collar.

It won't be as shiny, but you're not gonna get that sheen anyways unless you make everything from scratch with metallic stretch vinyl/spandex. And if you use a thermal set you won't have to worry about matching material/color for just the leggings.

>> No.9716561

>>9714674
You're over-complicating things, that's a close-fitting jumpsuit (search for just "men's jumpsuit", not boiler suits). Even if it's a little loose the straps and whatnot will draw it in closer, and you can get it tailored or make modifications if need be.

Friend and I decided to cosplay from the same series together. I got invited to be a group photoshoot for that same series (same character/cosplay, obviously) at the same con. My friend wouldn't be able to join as he's planning on a different cosplay for the day that the photoshoot is planned (I'll wear the same cosplay two days) and the group already has somebody else cosplaying "his character".

Would it be rude of me to go ahead and join this other group? I was thinking that I shouldn't have to be getting his permission or anything but maybe it would seem like a dick move.

I want to work on dark colored fabrics, the idea is to airbrush over the fabric with a lighter color example - fabric is a very dark blue and I want to airbrush details in a lighter tone. I've been experimenting a lot with Kazuma's cape and still nothing seems to work. In a lot of scenes it's just a straight semicircle with the division between the collar and the rest of the Cape being basically puckering, but some also have this corner like it's a diamond with most of one half cut off, but the proportions don't work in real life. I've also tried a sort of jellybean shape to get the curve at the front, but that didn't work either. The few examples of Kazuma cosplays I've seen around all do the wrong style for the cape too.

Cutaway capes are awkward buggers, I've been trying to work one out for myself recently.
The best I can do you is something like pic related. If you had that, with width equal to your bust measure (maybe a bit less for style's sake), and wrapped it around yourself, you should have the cape. The dotted line shows where the collar break is.
It may wrinkle a little bit at the end of your shoulder, though. Obviously, to a muslin first to see if you like it.
