Nah, I feel like the early 2000’s was the tail end of ‘old school’ and the embryonic stages of ‘modern’ lolita. 2006 is just around when I first found out about lolita and I remember there being kind of a mishmash of the old school vibe and the beginnings of the “print” era where there was way less focus on the lace and more on what was printed on the fabric, of that makes sense.

I don't know why but coords like these are what Lolita really is to me. I just love it's simplicity, instead of having cupcakes on your head, star clips, other kind of busy accessories and a busy print dress.

I’ve been to meet ups where a lot of us incidentally wore old school and we were able to take some old school pictures. An old school meet sounds fun and I’d definitely attend, but I don’t think that even in a comm as large as mine there would be many people who’d be able to do true old school. You’d have people showing up in 2011 AP because “it’s old, too!” and lots of anachronistic materials e.g. chiffon blouses, modern embroidered tulle lace etc. because those are so ubiquitous now and I don’t think many people would be willing to buy an extra set of accessories or a new blouse in a colour they already have just because the lace isn’t old school enough. I only know maybe three people who would be able to put a truly old school coord together, and excluding everyone else from the meet isn’t really an option. So I think it can be done if the bar isn’t held too high.

If I had an old school meet this weekend I’d be wearing red tartan with white blouse/leg wear and black accessories. Tartan is the best.

Baby's Karami JSK is probably the classic example, the Hem Scallop JSK would also be a decent start.

Look at enough old school pieces and magazines until you understand old school, then find an old school b&w dress you like instead of going for one of Baby's re-releases. Everyone who wants to try old school uses fucking hem scallop or babydoll jsk and there is nothing that says Baby's First Old School like it. There are plenty of old, easy to coord dresses b&w from Meta, Baby, AP, MAM, Cornet and other brands you could be doing instead, and then you won't look like you're jumping on the trend train.

I get almost all of my pieces from secondhand japanese sites (mercari, fril, auctions etc) and having a small understanding of japanese is extremely useful.
Usually what I do is use keywords like brand names or acronyms, then set the search parameters to things like "ladies" "onepiece" and then sort by price. With mercari and fril, its difficult to figure out some things, (like filtering out sold items) without knowing /some/ kanji but you can probably do it with google translate.
Also, sometimes adding in colours to searches helps too. Like searching "btssb 黒" and just looking at the cheap stuff usually comes up with some good results.

Can't save you from your foolish love of white, as I almost exclusively own black. However, I feel your velveteen pain. I have dresses I'd wear all the damn time if they weren't old enough to drive themselves to a meet.

My velvets are hardy, but replacing almost any item (main piece or otherwise) in my closet would be hell, which is the worst part of liking old school.

>> No.9716245

>>9716241
I'm still really upset because an OP I really love started disintegrating shortly after I bought it, and I think would be too fragile for more than very gentle, infrequent use even after an expensive repair. Why does oldschool do this to us. I've seen the same OP up for sale a couple of times and always have to stop myself buying another, since I don't know if the first one I bought was just stored badly or if the material and age make it inherently fragile. The other velvets I've had have thankfully been fine.

>> No.9716253

>>9716245
Oh that would be awful. I've heard stories of that happening, but I guess I've been stupid lucky with velvet thus far. Velveteen ribbons are what have been awful to me. Gotten one dress where the ribbon is half bald, and another where the ends were fraying because the finishing wore out. But that's much more fixable than velvet disentigrating.

>> No.9716257

I'm so sad, I recently wore one of my older meta jsks [2004] out and the hem got stuck on something as I was walking and ripped. That's the worst part about wearing old school imo [and I wear it all the time]... it's pretty hard to replace most of them if they get damaged. :( luckily it was just the back them and the rip was pretty clean, but I don't like having damaged clohing. :( I'm going to patch it up and do what I can, but even then, I have to live knowing it's damaged.

Where's doing good aprons these days? I especially love ones with lots of pintucks, embroidery and heirloom details, but I don't have a sewing machine so I can't make one. The only one I found was Excentrique and it's way too long for oldschool. Anyone know anything about dating old school items other than looking in the GLB and street snaps to find similar? Are tags (on the clothing) helpful at all, and is there anywhere that mentions different iterations of tags certain brands have gone through? I have found a couple of my really old skirts in the GLB and lolibrary, and occasionally I notice that the items in GLB ads differ from the page in lolibrary, such as the skirt shown here. I actually have it in black and it matches the listing on lolibrary, but the one in this ad is clearly different. Was this one rereleased? Maybe the final production turned out different?

Never bought from taobao so I can't help you there, but re: bloomer length, it depends on how tall you are, how long your dress is, and how much you want your bloomers to peek.
Peeking bloomers look the best when it's not obvious that they're bloomers; if the peeking lace makes your plain OTKs look like they have lace at the top, it's a good length imo.

I grabbed this skirt off of Tokyo Alice this morning and am so excited for it! It's probably going to be a little tight on my waist, so I may have to have it altered, but it has a bustle made out of faux fur and is an early JetJ velveteen piece, so it's probably super plush and heavy (and ridiculous). How much should I worry about matching off white trim for an old school coord?

I'm thinking of getting pic related and Lolibrary says the trim is ivory. Should I go for an ivory blouse/socks? Or should I go for white? I think I'll have a lot easier time finding white shoes/bag than off white.

>> No.9755714

Are you thinking of coordinating this with all white? You can do that but I'm not sure how nice the end result will look.
Anyway, stark white looks odd paired with off white or beige/ivory, especially for a skirt like this; if it makes you feel better, brand pieces that are listed as "white" are actually off white more often than not, and I don't think the shades have to match perfectly unless the difference is very obvious.

A lot of Japanese sellers will list off brand stuff or pieces from small brands as being from a similar more popular brand, just so it shows up in more searches. Adding to this that some oldschool bell-shaped skirts with inbuilt petticoats actually need an A-line petti to look good, because the tulle inside is shaped to compensate and turn an A-line into a bell. Triple Frill? OP, missing one of the detachable arm bows but in good condition, especially for it's age. Comes with underskirt. I'd give it a B rating for having a slight used feeling.

Velveteen JSK is in really great condition, A~B rating cause it looks like new.

Skirt is also in good condition, also a B rating for slight used feeling, comes with underskirt.

Headbow in blue, matches the OP, JSK & skirt, has wire in it, also in good shape, b rating.

Princess Pinafore op, lace needs ironing and the velvet has a used feeling, good condition, b rating.

Same velveteen headbow, but in black, has wire, b rating.
