>> No.9712072

>>9711987
If you’re trying to figure out popularity as a prediction exercise, I use the following metrics:

- How similar is the design to previous bloodbaths?
- How aesthetically pleasing is the design overall?
- Are the available cuts typically popular based on previous releases?
- Are the available colors standard issues that usually sell or are they off the beaten path?
- What’s the buzz around the release been like?

The last point is pretty iffy because I only have access to western groups, so if you can read other languages you’d probably have a better gauge based on that. There have been enough releases where buzz was high here and lolita updates and the release essentially flopped. All the other points are dependent on your existing knowledge of a given brand, and a reasonable amount of subjective taste.

>> No.9712113

Why are so many lolitas so quick to jump and talk about how high quality brand is? Or even lolita items in general (taobao etc). What does “quality” mean to you?

>What does “quality” mean to you?
-Soft, sturdy, comfortable fabric: You can generally tell what is and isn't good based on appearance and how the fabric drapes, and by touch, of course.
-Attention to details and construction: Well sewn ruffles, lace, pintucks, etc. Baby's ruffles from 2005-2008 for example own my heart, they're done perfectly. Extra buttons fall under here too; not having them doesn't necessarily mean the garment is badly made but having an extra button sewn on the tag inside is the kind of detail I appreciate. Meta do this often.
-Good designs: Not just overall appearance of the garment, though that counts too; I mean things like having enough fabric in the skirt portion to fit a petticoat nicely. I noticed this difference when I tried on my first IW dress after years of wearing Bodyline - The petticoat fit perfectly and I didn't have to adjust and readjust it or layer it with more petticoats to make the silhouette look good.
No comment on prints because I don't own any, but obviously if the print doesn't endure being cleaned (either by wash or dry cleaning) then it's terrible quality. There were a few examples of this happening to prints by Chinese brands posted in quality threads, they should be in the archive.

I primarily collect solids like >>9712121 and agree with many of the points made. I really appreciate detailed work like pintucks and fine ruffles, and the use of high quality notions (buttons, clasps, etc).

Fabric matters as well. It's difficult to gauge the weight of materials online, but established brands tend to use the same materials in many of their clothes so you can expect consistency. Consider AATP's baniran cotton prints and VM's chiffon... anything.

>>9712117
Definitely try Lacemarket. As a buyer I love the "watch" option and it's easy to search for items. As a seller, the platform makes it simple to organize my listings. I would love to see some brand printed socks on fat/chubby legs. People are always talking about how tall they are when talking about socks but how fat do you have to be until the print gets distorted? I'm not chubby but have thick af calves, 15 inches around. Normal seems to be 13-14 based on boot sizes. Meta socks look very distorted, IW also look pretty distorted, Baby are close to being okay but still distorted, Pirates are pretty good, and AP depends on new or old. New AP socks fit me perfectly. Early 2000s AP socks don't fit me, I damaged one of my sets by stretching out the intarsia, creating holes all over the print. Depends on the material also, I have another old pair of AP socks that fits okay. I have yet to find a good source for printed tights and socks for my calf size. Sock dreams have the ugliest, most ita designs. They should not be so commonly recommended. I have found some good stretchy print socks on Ali but I think they were replicas so I'm hesitant to post pictures wearing them online

Quality to me ends up being a number of things all rolled together. Things I look for are:

-Material. Is it soft, is it at least slightly wrinkle resistant, how does it drape? Good material, even cotton, will be at least somewhat wrinkle resistant with rare exceptions. Another important thing is material choice, and if it's appropriate for what they're trying to do. For example are they trying to put boning directly into an unlined cotton dress?
-Print quality. Can it hold up to cleaning of some kind? Not everything has to be machine washable but I hate being afraid of having prints cleaned. Baby is the worst offender of this, and I do think less kindly of them for it.
-Detailing (lace, pintucks, ruffles, corset lacing, etc). I don't need it to use a lot of any of these, but I want what's used to be good, and I want it to be appropriate and make sense as a design choice. Custom lace is a weakness of mine as well.
-Construction. This includes tailoring, as well as general stuff. Are the seams straight, ruffles evenly gathered, corset loops well inserted? Are the bodices well shaped? Is it fully or partially lined?
-Consistency. Can you predict how a dress style is going to fit you, what the material will be like, how it will wash and wear?

There's more of course, but this is a rough idea of what I look for. Plenty of brands fall short in some of these areas, I won't ever say they're perfect. They all have their quirks. But in general brands manage to hit most of these.

I have some printed tights but I don't wear them much because yeah, they get a bit distorted on my legs. It's mostly the reason why I only ever wear plain tights. There's enough interesting basic pattern or lace, etc. tights out there to look interesting but I definitely wish there was a better solution for cool printed tights.

Teja Jamilla is another commonly reccomended one but they only have a few pattern choices and most of them lean towards gothy and not really sweet (not sure which styles you're looking for). I’d say this depends a lot on your context/wardrobe “story”.

Like if your wardrobe aim was all about thrifting and homemade, then loliables might make up a pretty substantial part of the “story”, in which case I’d include them as a vital part of the wardrobe.

Or, if you wanted to show how your wardrobe was all pink x black, I’d arrange the pics to show everything in pink and black, and not bother excluding at all.

Or, if your thing was about collecting novelties and you’ve got a pretty substantial collection of things from all sorts of brands, it’d be pretty impressive to see them all in a few photos, and you can spotlight the weirder, more interesting pieces.

Or, if your thing was multtiple colourways and sets, I’d do the photos as sets of things, instead of putting all the dresses in one photos, accessories in another and legwear in yet another.

I guess if you can’t figure out a good angle to your wardrobe, or maybe you just have too much stuff to photograph, then just do the main pieces and the lolita-brand things. Loliables and accesories are great if they’re cool, but I would definite try to avoid photos that look like 50% normie kei and not much lolita.

Really? There are a few 100+ and 60+ that post every year. My wardrobe is in that 50+ ballpark and although it's larger than average I don't feel like it's anything exceptional...most girls I know that have been in lolita 4+ years have similar amounts.

I've always photographed everything except plain tights, but I'm wondering if I might hit Livejournal's limit this year...I still want to include detail of blouses and cardigans so I might collage them together into sets of 3 or something. I include offbrand if it's something I wear really often but not otherwise.

I actually dislike seeing wardrobe posts that are just main pieces with nothing else...you can't really see their personal style or whether their wardrobe is well-rounded and wearable, and unless they have rare pieces with no stock photos photos of dresses alone aren't that interesting. A wardrobe with the same main pieces can have a completely different personality with different accessories, so I love to see them.

I'm honestly only interested in wardrobe posts that include everything and not only the main pieces (brand and indie brand that is, see below for offbrand). Because that is what makes the wardrobe cohesive and complete and I really like how the personal style shines through the matching pieces or unique accessories and I like to imagine the coords that are possible. Without that most wardrobes are pretty boring desu.

About adding offbrand stuff...I personally wouldn't include offbrand main pieces unless they are selfmade. Also things like the generic frilly blouse you found at H&M unless it is something really stellar & unique. Small offbrand items like hair accessoires or jewelry are ok if they match your wardrobe and are not ita tier. Always ask youself if you'd be interested to discover that offbrand item in another persons wardrobe post and make your decision to include it or not based on that. Group unimportant items in 1 photo. There are also some widely accepted offbrand brands like Fluevog that I'm always interested to see included.

I think 30 hours or more, mine took over that last year and my wardrobe isn't a 100+ monster. A lot of stuff needs ironing or steaming too because it got wrinkled on the hanger - ironing takes forever and you can't steam batches of more than 10 or 15 items at once without running out of places to hang them to dry. Plus a lot of Northern Hemisphere people only have natural light for a few hours a day now, so if you work 9-5 you can only take photos at weekends. Are there any nail colours or styles that'd look good in non-OTT lolita? I'm trying to quit biting and grow mine out and I figured I'd be less likely to bite them if they had polish on, but I can't think of anything that'd look right in oldschool/classic beside a clear coat or a French tip. I have really short nail beds as well - dark colours make them look shorter and there isn't much real estate for nail art. It's hard to find inspo pics that aren't on super long nails and desu I'm kind of insecure about drawing attention to them at all. They're not ridged or brittle, just really fucking stubby. I'd just match the nail colour to the dress colour, eg- pink with pink jsk, light blue with sax jsk, etc.

If you want to get a little more fancy, These kinds of nail stickers with white lacey designs are pretty common, and they'd echo the cotton lace + solid colour aesthetic pretty well. If you're doing old school with black x black you could do silver or gold polish with black lace sticker instead.

No do not wash it. It will bleed. Especially in red. Don't take anons advice. Cotton can fade and bleed when washed in water so it's best to be careful when washing cottons. But red is known to be limited in it's ability to be color fast. I hope you see this before you attempt. If you're ever worried about a print bleeding take a wet white cloth and gently rub it over the fabric in an inconspicuous area to see if any color comes off onto the cloth. Generally speaking polyester will hold it's dyes and cotton will not. But consider that all a parts of a dress may not be the Sam material. Always read the tags and use your best judgement.

We need a real elitist phase again, where taobao is seen like bodyline compared to brand. Too bad brand quality itself isn't that great anymore.

>> No.9715000

>>9714952

Brand quality is still pretty far above taobao and Bodyline. A lot of the comments on quality come from people who are comparing burando vs burando, as in last year's/last decade's burando vs this year's/this decade's burando.

When you actually try and compare even current burando to current taobao, burando generally wins. Just the guarantee that the print won't flake off is already giving it a headstart over anything printed from taobao. As for the trim and everything else, burando again has a headstart with actual custom embroidered lace or custome real metal pendant charms. You generally have to cherry pick the worst of burando and compare it to top tier taobao to even get them to a comparable level.

I'm going to stick with newbs are dumb. That, and taobao resellers making a lot of noise trying to push their products. The devilinspired campaign was probably transparent to seagulls, but I bet dumb noobs out there swallowed it hook, line and sinker, and are probably browsing for their first disposable taobao outfit, rather than focusing on buying quality dresses.

>> No.9715044

>>9715000
A lot of newbs I know also like to jump on gimmicks and care about that more than quality and durability. I know several girls who will buy anything with certain animals on it even if the print is poorly designed, the cut is awkward or unflattering, and the quality is so low that the dress starts to degrade after a few washes. B-but it has an axolotl/doge/birb/dragon/blobfish on it so OMG MUST HAV.

Personally I’m a sucker for certain themes and motifs too, but that doesn’t mean I’ll just throw my money at anything featuring that motif, no matter how rare. It needs to be well designed and decent quality above everything else. In the end it should be a piece of clothing I get years of wear out of, not a novelty item I wear to a con once or twice and then shove to the back of the closet. But many newbs and Taobaolitas are still in that con phase and therefore have different priorities than us.

>But many newbs and Taobaolitas are still in that con phase and therefore have different priorities than us

It doesn't help that Taobao pieces tend to be made to look good in photos, but not in person. The few taobao pieces I have photograph great, but look cheap in real life. I'd never wear them out and about, as they look like costume wear in person (quality costume, but costume none-the-less). It's a perfect storm for grabbing the con/meet-lita who cares about looking great in a few pictures but not much else.

I've actually had good luck with shoes from Taobao, though. You need to do your research, and there are occasionally quality errors like there would be elsewhere, but I think Taobao is the easiest way to find shoes.
I also like AP, VM, and JM. My Baby shoes broke quickly, and I haven't owned other "good" jfashion brands. The only pairs of Bodyline shoes I really liked and want more of have been sold out for ages.
I will say that I hate most fast fashion footwear with lolita. I see a lot of girls wear pumps or cheap Japanese shoes, and they just don't work most of the time. Also those shoes are generally so poorly made.

The taobao JSK and blouse she got looked really off, so she quit lolita. Few months later she met me and some other lolitas, saw how nice brand is, and became interested in lolita again. The gimmicks annoy me so much. I don't mind the straight up meme dresses because obviously people are buying them for that reason, but when people whine about how AP, Baby etc. are 'boring' because they don't have bizarre shit on their dresses it really grinds my gears. Obviously they aren't going to make weird risky designs with blobfishes and trolls on them because they won't sell well and they (mostly) don't cheap out on designs and cut corners the way taobao brands do.

I get that people who buy taobao stuff have different priorities to people who buy brand and I don't really care what meme dresses conlitas want to wear. But brand is still leagues above and probably always will be, solely because brand is made to last. I don't care when AP puts out another chocolate or berry print because I don't have to buy it. I don't care that it's 'boring' because I know it's what sells and that many actual lolitas want to build a cohesive wardrobe that will last them years. Rather than a collection of 'interesting' meme tier dresses with mismatched lace and the print flaking off.

>>9715000
I'm so sick of seeing devilinspired posts by lolitas that obviously only wear brand and would never pay for that stuff themselves. I can attest to this. When I first heard of the fashion it was back when taobao wasn't a thing and the only options were brand and bodyline. I never liked bodyline designs so I just never wore the fashion for years, just admired it from afar. I finally felt comfortable spending the money on brand once I went to Japan and saw the stuff in person, then I knew straight away that I wanted to commit to the fashion.

I think if i had bought taobao and/or bodyline back in the day I probably would've fallen out of love with the fashion quickly the way your friend did. The first time seeing brand stuff in person is always really exciting because of the quality and the amount of detail that goes into it. Cheaper alternatives are great for those that just want to try out new styles and take instagram pictures, but nothing is quite like the moment of getting your first brand dress or even seeing brand in person for the first time.

>>9715121
I think they want to wear it, but they have too high expectations and taobao stuff just doesn't fulfil them. It can be a case of 'what you ordered vs what you actually got' being completely different and for some people that can scare them away from the fashion.

I had loved the fashion since the early 2000s but for whatever reason didn't get into it until... maybe 2005? anyway, my first lolita was bodyline and it was truly horrible. the lace was gross and itchy and I just felt horribly disillusioned with it. Lolita, to me, was supposed to feel opulent and exquisite, and this felt like some trashy costume... not what I wanted at all. It wasn't until I got a brand piece that I actually fell in love with wearing lolita myself. before it was more like something I admired that was better in theory than reality.

December is a fairly good time to sell IMO as all the teens get their Christmas money and go off to buy their first piece, and some people want stuff as presents. Lots of students and retail workers working extra shifts or hired as temporary workers over the holiday season as well, so they have more money to spend. True, most working adults are broke after Christmas (or prioritising the January sales) but there are still some that spent less than expected and have money to spare, so it's not too bad.

January is an awful time to sell though. Pretty much everyone is spent up by then, and a lot of people make a ton of sales posts after making their wardrobe post so the market gets flooded with second-hand stuff and is slow for months. Usually doesn't pick up again until spring when people start looking for warm-weather stuff and aren't worrying about the cost of the heating bill each month.

I both buy more at Christmas because it's cold and I'm bored, and I used to ask for secondhand brand as Christmas gifts. No one ever bothered to make a LM account but one of my relatives actually did get me a legit Baby dress from eBay.

On another note, how often do you guys buy new releases? Don't answer if you don't, no one cares that you're poor. I finally have disposable income enough that I can buy as often as I'd like and still save for retirement, but there haven't been a lot of releases I liked this year, I only got two dresses and they were both AATP. Normally I buy AP and Meta, but they released literally nothing I liked this year

Maybe once or twice a season I reserve a main piece from baby/aatp but I usually tend to wait for end of season sales to buy stuff from other brands. AP has been hit or miss for me this season. there are a few designs I like but they aren’t selling that well so I figure to just wait until the winter sales and get them for cheaper. Lately there’s been nothing from AP that I want enough to have it straight on release day. Same with moitie, there’s stuff I want but nothing has really stuck out to me that I want as soon as it comes out, besides maybe the phone cases.

Not counting Taobao releases since they're cheaper anyway, maybe two or three times a year. I've only bought once from Baby, once from AatP and three times from AP in the past two years. There were three other releases I wanted to buy but missed out on.

That makes me feel better, I want to support the brands since I love them and want to keep lolita alive, but this year has been so meh- usually if I like the print, I hate the cut and vice versa. >how often do you guys buy new releases
Maybe two or three times a year. In the past two years I've bought new brand dresses once from Baby, once from AatP, and three times from AP. I also bought full-price dresses from Atelier Pierrot and Antique Beast but I wouldn't really classify it as a "new release" since they re-release so often and hold stock for so long... There were also three other releases I wanted that sold out while I was dithering or were just bloodbaths (Baby/Moitie/AP) that I'd pick up second-hand if I saw them at retail.

>> No.9715287

>>9715240
A couple times a year, maybe? I've bought more brand blouses and accessories this year than actual prints though. Everything's been pretty underwhelming. Maybe that'll change next year what with Moitie coming back from the dead.

Anyway, what to do about unresponsive sellers on LM? I got the automatic email to leave feedback on Friday, but figured I'd wait the weekend to see if it arrived. No package, so I messaged the seller on Monday asking for any details (she never sent a tracking number after payment, but I've been super guilty of taking days to unearth the receipt from my bag so I didn't really think much of it). It's still on unread and it's been nearly three weeks since I bought it. I'm just nervous. I don't want to file a claim, I'd rather she just tell me if she got too busy to ship it!

You made me curious, Anon, so I had to look. I only counted main pieces I bought on release day:
2017 - AP: 4, BTSSB: 1, Meta: 1, Miho Matsuda: 1
2016 - AP: 7, BTSSB: 1, Meta: 1, Atelier Boz: 1
2015 - AP: 5, BTSSB: 1

I only started buying new releases in 2015 as opposed to just second hand. I only buy things I like that match my wardrobe. I agree this year's releases were pretty meh. I hope that they'll be better next year, but I don't have much hope based on the previews. I might start going deeper in the non-print dresses since AP hasn't been doing too poorly there.

Anyone have an idea on what the max bust is for either cut of little bear's cafe? Its really cheap on CC right now and I wouldn't mind adding such a cute piece to my wardrobe!

nayrt, but is there any way to follow a twitter account without needing to open up twitter to check it?

I'm only waiting for that one equine dress they previewed like a year ago and still haven't released.

Not sure but I aint complaining. IW doesn't seem to ever have much resale value, much like MILK or ETC probably because its simplicity and lower-profile releases, bar a few (rabbit letter, etc.). IW dresses also retail cheaper than other brands, a new dress is usually around the 23k yen mark whereas AP and BABY are 27k plus

Not sure where to ask so I'll just try asking here
How do you deal with finding blouses in more unusual colors?
Specifically more muted colors, like pinks.
I feel like it's really rare to find, and I'm not sure if I should try to reconsider what colors to use (I'm trying to build up my wardrobe so I'm planning a bit in advance)

Taobao or non-Lolita-specific shit desu. Most cute blouses I’ve seen in colors other than the standard palette are offbrand.

For classic dusty pink, brown, navy and wine I like IW and for sweet pink, sax or even mint or yellow there’s AP. AP sometimes does navy and wine, too. You can also try Taobao/offbrand but I don’t trust non-Japanese brands to match their lace properly, so in those cases I’d look for ruffle detailing or purposefully contrasting lace instead.

Oh also you can commission chiffon blouses in a huge array of colours from indie brands like Lady Sloth.

I checked taobao a bit earlier today, but I didn't really find that much other than brown red navy and the regular black, white and ivory
I might check some offbrand stuff though, thanks for the tip!
>>9718111
Not really, this looks like a more common pink
Thanks anyways though!
>>9718119
Yeah, dusty pink is one of the colors I'm looking for. I prefer to buy second-hand, because of the price, how often do those pop up on the second-hand market?
I've found some blouses from VM, but I'll look through IW as well, thank you
>>9718123
Would prefer to avoid that because I'm guessing that would be pretty pricey, haha. But its good to know that it's an option, in case I can't find anything else

I already have an account, which I never check. Much like my FB which I made to join my local comm, which I also never check.

Was kinda hoping there's an RSS feed somewhere, which I use an RSS reader for and actually do check pretty regularly. Guess not, huh.

Thanks for the answer though. Always nice to have it confirmed and know I wasn't technologicaly stunted for not being able to find it.

No, they were trying to do a "darker sweet" and ouji thing. I did not like them at all when they first came out but over the years they have produced some beautiful things

Then what do you expect? If you never check their updates, you'll never hear about new releases. You can't expect someone to hand deliver the ones you like.

there's someone selling Melty Ribbon Chocolate in my preferred colorway on LM, but i've noticed NO ONE had bid on it twice. I didn't place bids because I would forget to, but this is starting to raise suspicions for me. I've seen auctions go stupidly high for this dress, so am I missing something?

If it's the low waist cut it looks like a sack. The other listings look like the sellers don't have much feedback so I guess a bit of distrust (?)
