Just got around to finishing all the Christmas cards for my penpals, and I didn't want to write while I was coughing up a lung. I'll hopefully have these sent out tomorrow, and most will be received before 12th Night and the end of Christmas.

A few of us put out emails a while back, and swapped addresses.

The actual content of the letters varies, as at least for now, I have only made one exchange (IE, we each sent each and received one letter each) from the half dozen people on my list. Most of them so far is just pleasantries and sundry info about ourselves. I write with one lady who does historic recreation and historic influenced elegant lolita, as an "in the moment in character" dialogue of ourselves as if in the 18thC. She's using it for a creative writing class. Another gentleman is asking general advice on being agreeable to women, while being potato shaped (a skill I am well versed in). Requirements are only that it be hand written, and that you have fun with it.

For dogs, poodles for sure. I think corgi's need to make an appearance in lolita prints at some point. What's more lolita than the queen's dog of choice?

Also, what other specific breeds do you think are most lifestyle, both for cats and dogs? I'm trying to kind of make a list of them. I think it's just interesting what lolita brands determine as "lolita breeds".

Hey, folks, I'm recently come across some macaron assortments in a few grocery stores in my area. iirc, the brand I see is called Looka, and I've seen them in the frozen dessert aisle at my local Walmart (for about $6), Kroger's & Jewel Osco (about $8-9). I believe Costco have had these for some time (I don't shop there myself)

Kinda bummed that Aldi's no longer sells macarons. They were so affordable.

Obviously, not everyone lives near these groceries, but have anyone seen/tried macarons being sold in bulk at their local grocery?

Also, what did you bake for the holidays?

>>9736103
Kinda? I try to at least wear things that fit. It's all T-shirts and pants (mix of jeans and chino type/legging pants). Pretty dull.

For me, it's more so that I've invested in lolita clothes so much that my normie clothes have taken a backseat. It doesn't really help that normie women's clothing is cheaply made and meant to be on-trend, so it's hard to stock pile on decent quality basics. If I had the means, I would love to have a street goth type of wardrobe for every day wear, mixed in some Kate Spade pieces to wear for work/dates.

A little. With the exception of my hiking boots, all my shoes were bought to go with lolita. It feels weird to wear dainty heels or Mary Jane platforms with jeans so unless I’m going somewhere boots are okay, I usually end up wearing a skirt or dress and tights. And most of my skirts/dresses are pretty girly, even the ones I bought at normal stores, so this all adds up to me having a difficult time looking ‘professional’. Luckily no one has cared so far but if I ever get a job where this is important, I’m going to have to go shopping for an entirely new wardrobe.

Mostly the latter, but I feel like there is a lot of overlap. I.E. pretty much anything you can learn would apply to lolita lifestyle even if the reverse isn't true with wearing full coord. God knows there are plenty of venues to get to sort of thing, not that it would be disallowed unless we are in severe ita/trashy/unwashed territory.

Mostly it would be nice to focus on dining, social aspects, ect while providing a comfortable and attractive lounge, bar, and dining parlor open to members and invitees only and revocable on unsavory behavior. A country club for ladies interested in anachronisms of dress and manners without the "country" side.

>is it considered rude to reject alcohol being served
Not him but you have to understand classical manners pertaining to individual preference is not like it is today. Individuality and personal taste was not considered as important until very recently in history and so the classical answer to your question is, short of medical necessity "yes, it is rude to refuse anything your host provides" whether you are vegan or a teetotaler.

But there is always another side to this issue, and that is that a proper host is aware of their guests preferences and if you were a known vegan teetotaler a proper host should never invite you to a dinner of mixed company, perhaps only a tea that is accommodating to you.

And yet another side of the coin is that sometimes people have no choice but to do the "rude" thing if its the lesser of two evils.

oh I should mentions there is an exception to this, a cheese platter that comes at the end of the large menu is considered option and not rude to decline, and you may also refuse seconds of ANYTHING you have already eaten or drinken. So if you have a considerate host they might instruct for you only to have a splash of alcohol tasted that you can then decline more of.

Also if you are under drinking age your host is obligated not to break the law, obviously.

I full agree with >>9739716/>>9739719. Modernly speaking, while the host should be aware and cater to their chosen guest's needs, there is not shame in politely declining based on religion, dietary needs or legality. If I was a guest at a dinner that was not aware, I would decline in being served a peanut gazpacho, for example, as I am allergic. Someone who is not able to drink for personal or religious reasons would have no need to explain themselves, and moreso, I do not know a single modern formal meal that does not have the option of a nonalcoholic beverage.

yeah I think its important to understand we can't escape from modern sensibilities. obviously you can decline whatever for any reason and "rudeness" has become completely subjective and unenforceable compared to the olden days of coded social conduct and consequences.

I mostly think it is important how you decline the offer/food. Along with most hosts, I am more than happy to come up with an alternative as long as you give me advance notice, and I really don't care if you don't drink or eat one or two things. If you are at a restaurant or catered event, just decline the food/drink politely and you should be fine.
With that said, I am definitely biased against very picky or "rude" eaters, and few things will make me instantly dislike a person more than an entitled and aggressive attitude about food. Like the vegan who moves to Japan and complains at every restaurant, outing, and event that they can't eat anything. Or the girl who waits until she's at my tea party to tell me she's gluten intolerant and then guilts me for not being "inclusive."
If you have dietary restrictions, please let your host know whenever applicable.

What you started is the slippery slope that necessitates the "rule" for ignoring your individual preferences for the sake of social cohesiveness and ease. I tried to make my own yule log cake this year and it wasn't as painstaking as I thought. I just used an old recipe from my grandma's cookbook and tried to make as much as possible from scratch so it felt pretty cozy. Moving on, Happy New Years, everyone! What changes are you all hoping to make?

I had a rough 2017, so I'm hoping to add a bit more romanticism and lifestyle to my every day. I think it helps when you change your daily rituals. I'm going to try having a daily tea with a nice teaset at a set time so I can force myself to stop working and just sit down and relax. I'm also going to get into tea collecting and tea tins and to try to buy some really ones. >Study and apply etiquette to my daily life (no burping!)
>Be more graceful (such a klutz)
>Learn to use my above-average vocabulary without sounding pompous
>Try more teas instead of religiously sticking to gunpowder green and rooibos
>Write more letters and improve handwriting
>Quit my addiction to sugar and pizza (which will clear my skin)
>Use my cooking skills for once and actually make food at home instead of microwaving frozen chicken pot pies
>Practice piano and stop putting off learning to read sheet music
>Start learning Spanish and Japanese (maybe French too)

Borzois would also be good for gothic. The German Schipperke might be good for gothic or kuro- they kinda look like little bats, but they're more on the spritely and small side, not long and regal.

It depends on which groups you look into.

Sport fencing is right out. Its also not as interesting in my opinion.

HEMA (historic european martial arts), runs the gamut from alpha-nerd sword jocks in motor cross gear, to people who actually are interested in the history as much as the sport. Shop around and find the latter, and express that you are interested in 19th/20thC fencing, and want to learn based on the concept of ladies fencing clubs- the majority who wore dresses, or even special fencing skirts, much shorter than was typically acceptable at the time (pic related).

Your other option depends on how into history you are. Recreation groups like the Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA Rennissance/Medieval) and a few of the 18thC groups (Like the Society for Baroque Amusements) are also options. Pic related.

Most groups shouldn't have a problem if you legit want to learn to fence in skirts. There is plenty of historic reason.

Hoooooonestly? I haven't used Laduree. But from what I've heard? Performance doesn't live up to the price, it's really more about the pretty packaging and the luxury feel. Although granted a lot of the complaints were about a lack of pigmentation and that's YMMV.

I still want their rose blush because it's just so beautiful, even though I never use powder products, and maybe a cream blush and a lipstick even though I've got a dozen cream blushes and lipsticks already. I'm a sucker for gorgeous packaging.

Seconding Schmanners. My parents never taught me etiquette except for having a “no elbows on the table” rule so Schmanners has been very eye-opening (Thank-You notes are important!). My only complaint is that I find Travis (Schmanners’ co-host) to be occasionally forceful with his views and I hate that attitude even if I agree with his views.

After being reminded of Schmanners’ existence here, I listened to their episode on hankerchiefs, and it got me thinking: how many hankerchiefs do the people here own? What designs appeal to you? Where do you get them, or do you make them yourself?

I currently have none, as Amazon doesn’t return me any appealing designs in my searches and I’ve yet to really look elsewhere. I was looking into embroidering my own before being sidetracked by somethig else, and it promptly skipped my mind.

I have probably well over 100 handkerchiefs. The ones I have are almost always embroidered in some way, although I have a few that are printed or have lace trim. Some of them are passed down from my grandma and great grandma, but the bulk of my collection is from the antique stores near me. One time, I bought 80 dollars in hankies. The lady asked me if I was sure and I just smiled and said yes. I love all my hankies.

>Also some of my hankerchiefs are actually made from the same fabric as a towel. What do people do with those?
Those aren't handkerchiefs, those are hand towels. Japanese public restrooms don't always have towels or air dryers to dry your hands as its bad for the environment and costly. People carry around a hand towel in their purse or bag for this reason. It's better for everyone really.

they are also referred to as hankachi in japan, that's why. a lot of them are like a mix; thinner and softer than a hand towel/washcloth but thicker than a handkerchief. "tenugui" hand towels are not the kind you keep in your purse.
