And a quick heads up, Lidl currently has their airbrush kit on sale for €50. The compressor is good, the airbrush itself a bit meh but functional. However you can easily buy a decent airbrush for €15~€30 which still makes this a dirt cheap way to get into airbrushing.

It's not all that surprising really. Tomo simply does a lot more advertising, both online and at their many events. They're also way cheaper and mostly host their events at more central locations. Especially the latter makes it more tempting for the younger audience as they simply have less money to spend on conventions and traveling.
Nishi unfortunately is the opposite of this. Their con is more expensive due to the hotel costs and more troublesome to get to. Their reach on social media is ridiculously small and their stands at other cons are mostly Diana selling stuff instead of actually advertising Nishicon. It also doesn't help the last memory people have is the 2016 wasteland and so far this year doesn't seem to be any more promising.

As much as I want Nishi to survive, they really need to step up their game. One man can only do so much and organising a three day con is clearly too much to ask. Get some staff members in, let them help you organise your con and turn the con into so much more than it is right now. Either that or you might as well give in to the rumours and pull the plug after this edition.

>> No.9767970

>>9767781
Like how >>9767808 said, Tomo is much more interesting for the newer peeps, folks with not a whole lot to spend and people living far away from Nishi.

Also, to the dealers, Tomo is a much wiser choice, last year dealers had a rough time selling stuff at Nishi and many of them didn't make profit.
They'd rather go to Tomo and sell stuff to the newer community as they tend to spend money much faster on series they've just seen a week ago and are total trash of since then. New visitors always buy stuff since it's their first con and they want to begin/expand their collection, when reaching a certain point in which they know what dealers sell and what items are on their wishlist, they tend to spend less and are at that point that they've already visited cons for a while now. So as a dealer it's much smarter to invest in the location with "fresh meat" instead of veterans.

The fact that Nishi moved to Almelo isn't very wise either, I think they are trying to imitate Animecon's succes by following their old location and even though it's attractive for older visitors, it's a no-go for new visitors
First of all, back then there were not a whole lot of cons in the year so Animecon was the more popular choice by default, nowadays, we've gotten to the point that two cons are on the same day, so even though the more experienced visitors recommend it more to new visitors, they're still new so in their eyes all the cons are an equal fun experience and Nishi is just a more expensive version.
The second thing is advertising as previously stated, new visitors want to know what it has to offer and most of Nishi's activities and such are targeted to the older audience that already visit cons for a while now, while Tomo has activities more focused on children and tries to push it a lot.

Personally I'm going to Nishi, and even though there's a bit of drama, I don't totally dislike Tomo being on the same day, it means that Nishi won't be filled with new visitors and normies.

Not to sound rude, but most Dutch cosplay photographers seem to be completely incompetent, like they've only started fiddling around with a camera 2 months ago and haven't developed the technical aspects yet, and their references for visuals and their eye are completely formed by PS3 game graphics AKA they think about what's objectively in the frame (e.g. The person in the costume) and try to make it look like some plastic tacky stuff (artistically, not the craftsmanship of the cosplay), instead of feeling the end product that is the photograph. That Devon guy does nothing but use ridiculous backlights (go watch Days of Heaven, Devon, THAT's backlight) and kitsch particles. I understand that the client wants to show of their costume and themselves, but there is no artistic value or appreciation of aesthetics.
>How do cosplay photographers get their start (I got into fashion photography through working as an assistant)? Just go to cons and post pics on their social media page until they build a following? (I'm not a cosplayer myself, and have never been to a con, I just look at costumes online.)

I was just wondering. Do you also have the balls or she-balls to show your fashion photos to back up your claims or are you just trying to take cheap shots while no-one can see your own level. Because big talk without anything to back it up is worth as you know. Let me add my skill is a millin time better than yours and your work sucks ass compared to mine. You'll have to take my word for it though because I don't have anything to show for my claims.

I was just wondering. Do you also have the balls or she-balls to show your fashion photos to back up your claims or are you just trying to take cheap shots while no-one can see your own level. Because big talk without anything to back it up is pretty much worthless. Let me add my skill is a million times better than yours and your work sucks ass compared to mine, which is probably the reason why you can’t get jobs in the fashion circle. Good fashion photographers are still getting work right? You'll have to take my word for it though because I don't have anything to show for my claims.

Well now that they can move backwards people that run into them will cause them to swing backwards instead of breaking them. Although the wings itself are probably the most sturdy props I ever built, it's the attachment to the middle that has the weak points.
The weight is comparable with a medium weight backpack(4-5kg), but when the wings are backwards like in the picture there, they do weigh you down (to the sides is much more weight divided)

By the way I entered the winged demon hunter into Epiccon's contest today and won the category best armor cosplay! Very proud of this accomplishment.
The wings held up, but one of the rotational joints broke down and I could no longer rotate them. Next prototype will fix that.

I sometimes wonder how many of the people from way back when (still) post here since those SEF guys (MK and Superdash Zero X and more or whatever they were called) had some pretty overt 4chan references in their shows. I never said you did. I just gave a general warning. Because people say the same thing about camera's.
>I bought a DSLR camera, now I'm a better photographer!!!
>blurry shots all the time

The tools don't always make you better, you have to learn how to use the tools to become better. Hence why I gave a general warning about not expecting instant results.

I can't speak for her of course, but I think she was more worried about the general invasion of privacy, considering she also got some stalkers and general creepers at that time (when Metal Gear Solid V came out). Some guys on /v/ or reddit found her on a page that listed Animecon guests or something.
By the way, not to veer too much into gossip here, but from what I understand Karima and Stefanie had a falling out at some point. Do you know what happened? I only knew them as friends and it's hard to imagine them not getting along.

So, let me get this straight. Tomo had banned Lychee Tea from their events after Tomo stopped turning a blind eye to bootlegs. As a big fuck you Lychee Tea then bootlegged their way into TomoFair Amsterdam by renting some store space directly from the World Fashion Forum. To piss off Tomo even further on Sunday Lychee Tea moved some of their stuff outside their store and onto convention grounds. And now, after all this, Tomo is actively promoting a taiyaki stand that's operated by the Lychee Tea guy?

Does anyone here have any proof Fame Monster is just another rebrand by the Lychee Tea bloke, because if so I do feel an email to Tomo about this matter is in order.

Nevermind, I did my own research. After checking the KVK number listed on Lychee Tea's website (65144058) it turns out they have officially changed their name to Fame Monster. It's still the same shady owners selling the same shady bootlegs as before. I guess they believe that changing their name again will make them welcome at all the cons that banned them for selling bootlegs or something. Yeah, good luck with that!

Speaking of bootlegs, when you check their site's terms and conditions you'll find even those were bootlegged. They simply copypasted H&M's terms and conditions and didn't even bother to replace every mention of H&M! What's next, taiyaki made from pancake batter?

Earlier this week a German anon joined our Discord and made a bunch of thirsty remarks. Nothing out of the ordinary until last Friday, when I received a card send to me from Germany. It was send to my home address, had my full name on it and was signed by that very same Anon. At first I thought it was a prank, but not even after making it clear that this joke had gone too far did anyone admit they were the one who had send me that card. Needless to say I'm a bit creeped out from this right now especially as I've had to deal with a stalker in the past.

Now normally I would give newcomers way longer to mingle in with the rest, especially during slow days. However given the recent circumstances, you only speaking in German until another mod kicked you, and you going offline so quickly after rejoining wasn't exactly giving off any good vibes. The only thing we expect from those wishing to join our Discord is for them to be active and play nice, the first being something we weren't confident you would do.

Now if your intentions were good and you just wanted to get to know us and maybe hang out, then I do sincerely apologize for kicking you. Do note that the circumstances were a bit extraordinary hence the rash decision, but you are always welcome to rejoin and I do hope this incident won't prevent you from doing so. If you have any further questions you can always ask them to me.

You can tell the Viencon staff is inexperienced, yet highly motivated. While their idea is good and there certainly being a demand for a con like this, their lack of experience and (past) mismanagement is what’s currently holding them back. Their staff also seems to lack critical thinkers or appreciation thereof, which is crippling their ability to improve themselves. For instance, it’s blatantly obvious they never evaluated their first attempt after rescheduling their convention to Q3 2018. Doing so would had given them plenty of items to focus on and could had prevented them from making the same mistakes twice. It also didn’t help that feedback given to them by both friends and strangers went ignored, or even labelled as salty hate. Eventually they did realize there was a core of truth in those words and worked hard to change course which is what brought them where they are today.

If their efforts to turn Viencon into a great convention will be enough only time can tell. Personally, I would love for them to succeed although I just hope they aren’t too blinded by making their baby happen to throw in the towel if necessary before suffering any more (severe) financial damages. No matter what the outcome, let's hope that if they decide to organise a 2019 edition they will by then have learned from their mistakes and make it even better.

Abunai also sells out about a month before the date, and dokomi is the same. Expecting most of your visitors to book 5 months in advanced is presumptuous.

Plus no one expects them to sell out so people wait for the last posible moment. You have the Abunai hunger games coming up and god knows what rules the hotel will have this year.
Also too many people are afraid it will fail and that they'll lose their reservation fee.
Plus being right after abunai and gamescon, right at the start of the school year (both for middle and high school) and having zero content for non cosplayers.

So a bunch of stuff stacked up against them.
Organizing a con ain't easy, and they tought too lightly about the whole matter.

I don't know but seeing them fight so hard, even when they only started the fight a few months ago, kind of makes me want to see them succeed. They could be decent competition for Abunai and maybe replace their convention in their weekend at some point. I'm a little sceptical but I'm willing to give it a try especially since a lot of cons are giving up because of tomo. Tsunacon stopped and I heard this year is Nishicon's last year.

I do agree that replacing their date to... let's say... the spring break, would be a great thing. Let's hope they consider this.

>> No.9787085

IDK about nishicon. But Tsunacon stopped beacause tgey renovated the school and now there isn't a suitable place at the Erasmus to house them.
Tsunacon didn't have the budget to organize something outside of the school. This has nothing to do with Tomo. This was known as soon as the Erasmus inforned them about the renovation.

Why should Viencon have to replace Abunai? One peek at the con agenda is enough to realize there is plenty of room for them all to exist alongside one another. Even if good weather is a must, July only has campzone, August Castlefest and Abunai, and September Viencon and (likely) ACC.

Also Tomo didn't have anything to do with Tsunacon pulling the plug nor the rumoured end of Nishicon. As other anons already pointed out Tsunacon had a shit-tier staff and simply lost their location. And don't forget, Tomo was only around for a year and a half at that point and only active in the other side of the country. As for Nishi, Erik does 95% of all the work himself next to working a full-time job. This worked out okay back when Nishi was a one day event, but as a three day event it's just too much work for one man to handle. I still don't get why they won't just take in new staff members and distribute their workload more evenly. Even having just a single person doing PR would make a major change for them considering all the heavily outdated information on their website, marketing and lack of proper social media presence. So again, not Tomo's fault but their own.

It’s definitely not easy to find suitable candidates, but if you don’t ask you’ll never find them in the first place. There isn’t a single mention of them looking for people to reinforce their team on their site, only a page for gophers and stewards. Yet when you look at the “organisation” page you’ll find 5 functions with no names attached to them. I also don’t recall having ever seen a single post on Facebook of them asking for new staff members. So yes, it’s probably a combination of it both being hard to find and them being reluctant to ask for help.

Tomocon is trying really really hard to be a threat to Nishi though. I literally heard this story from a friend of a friend of Dian and Erik, but apparently Tomo picked the same date on purpose. Nishi had been advertising their event for months when Tomo suddenly announced their date. When Dian and Erik asked them why they didn't pick another date, Tomo claimed their venue was already booked for every other weekend that month.
Eventually Erik called Tomo's venue somewhere last year, pretending to be an interested client to check. The venue said they were totally free for every other date... Kinda a dick move if you ask me. Most vendors that were going to Nishi signed up for Tomo right away, because Tomo promises them many visitors.
Personally I think both Nishi and Tomo are shit, but I don't understand why the con world has to become so toxic. Again, not 100% sure if all of this is exactly true.
