I'm applying to some very competitive programs, and I'm already at a slight disadvantage because of my undergrad course's grade deflation policy and my relative lack of publications. My practice test scores are already above average, but I want to make certain that nothing else in my application could hurt me. To make matters worse, a couple programs on my list also require the subject test, which at least in my field is sweepingly broad. I've had to go back and review concepts I haven't thought about in years because I dove into a couple fairly specialized areas as soon as I finished my basic coursework. I also haven't really done math in years because very few aspects of my field require anything more than basic algebra.

Guilty admission here too on that. I own petticoats for pictures/meets and either don't wear a petti at all when going day to day or I have a deflating CP daily that I wear with some dresses. They're such a hassle and don't make me feel princess-y or special at all like some girls say they do for them - the dresses and all that goes into an outfit does that for me, the petti just makes me feel huge.

Same, A lot of girls talk about how they love the big poof and knocking things off shelves and feeling princessy and the like but personally I just feel kinda retarded taking up that much space for no actual occasion. I have a petticoat on the off chance I go to a lolita event, but in my daily life I just think it's obnoxious and like >>9790383 it's not the petticoat that really makes an outfit for me. It's all the other stuff.

I don't care if my outfits technically aren't lolita because I'm not after the hashtag, I just like to wear the pretty clothes. I guess I just love the brand clothing but I can't get 100% into lolita itself with the silhouette being a part of that. Same. I'm not e-famous but I'm very active in my comm. I really do like most of them and they're my only opportunity for likeminded female social interaction. If I stopped going to lolita meetups my social life would consist of two middle aged ladies who only talk about their kids and a bunch of condescending male nerds who nitpick female celebrities but are completely unaware of their own BO.
I still like my own little niche of lolita but all the rest of it has lost its appeal to the point where I find myself cringing a bit whenever I scroll through COF or find myself hanging out with certain members of my comm. I wish I could transport my mind back to 2008-2009 when everything Japanese with frills on it felt magical and amazing as opposed to tacky and childish. >borderline normie clothes
Why would you show up in borderline normie clothes to a meetup? Do you mean casual lolita? Because that's not normie by any stretch of the imagination, and I don't see why you can't wear something casual to a meetup. Maybe I'm just old fashioned in lolita terms, I don't know, I just don't see the big deal about dressing up to the nines just to meet up with some friends; then again my comm's meets aren't super fancy in the first place.

>> No.9790655

>>9790642
Obviously I wouldn't wear T shirts and jeans to a lolita meetup (I hardly own any), however my comm does get pretty fancy and OTT for meetups so even when I show up in a basic, non-casual lolita coord I feel underdressed in comparison. I've never seen someone wear casual lolita to a meet and I've heard people complain about ETC and JM not being lolita enough. I'm at a point where I feel more comfortable in "otome" or a kind of very toned down classic lolita that overlaps with vintage and I know my comm would look at me strangely if I showed up wearing that instead of "pure" lolita. I know I just said that they're not very strict on dress codes and officially they're not, it's not like they would ban me or anything, but they'd definitely shove me to the back of group pictures so I don't ruin them with my lack of poof and the thought of that is giving me anxiety. I want to blend in.

Huh. Well in that case I'm sorry for your shit comm. Have you made any close friends? I mean girls you can meet up with for some tea and macarons etc. just for fun, so you can wear coords you feel comfortable in without feeling underdressed. Small get togethers like this are the best imo.

For the sake of this fashion, I hope you're not in the minority. I don't wear wigs either, never have, I wear lolita daily and don't bother taking pics of my coords nor be active on COF; supposedly many daily lolitas are the same so for all we know, we might be a silent majority.

I love taking pics but usually keep them myself or post on facebook alongside my other outfit snaps. I find it weird that people kind of parade it around.

>> No.9790828

>>9790760
Nah, this isn't a really uncommon thing to think anymore, wigs seem to be very slowly on their way out, which I believe is being indicated in how most coords with wigs are now in more natural or muted tones, and some even resemble natural hair as opposed to the pastel twintail era we once had.

Personally I'm really hoping that wigs phase out completely, imo they only make lolita look like more of a costume unless they're very natural looking, but at that point you're better off just using your natural hair unless it's super short or in bad shape.

but it struck me today that I've been following this fashion for a year and have never seen an actual lolita IRL, and it seems like it would be weird to get into it and start showing up to meets without actually having seen or met any lolitas. new situations set off my anxiety pretty bad, and I am worried about making an ass of myself as I often do. I contemplated just showing up at the same place and time as a public meet and low-key watching them to see if it looks like something I would like to participate in, but that seems weird and stalky. You're going on about it the wrong way. Start wearing the fashion for yourself, even if it's just at home at first.
Does your local comm have a facebook page? When you have your first coord at least, contact them there and ask to join. Tell the mods that their comm is the closest to where you live, even if it's still a couple of hours away, and ask to attend the upcoming meetup. No stalking necessary.
Might be premature but when you do attend your first meetup, be sure to actually try to be social. If you go and don't find it fun then that's fine, you can continue wearing the fashion on your own; but the best way to know whether meetups are fun or not are to attend them, and the easiest way to be able to attend meetups is to wear the fashion.

Nayrt but same. I have one very natural blonde wig for when I want to be blonde, but otherwise I always use my own hair. It feels more satisfying somehow and more like I’m wearing an alternative fashion and not a costume. However I also don’t post to COF and rarely bother to take pictures of my coords before leaving the house.

>I just think it's funny that girls in full OTT and ridiculous, obvious wigs bitch about normies who compliment them on their costumes
I’ve noticed this too. It’s always the OTT girls in obvious unnatural wigs, heavy makeup, shoes they can’t walk in etc. who get disproportionally upset about people thinking lolita is a costume whereas the more casual girls usually just shrug their shoulders and move on. Maybe it’s because these girls only wear lolita like once a month or less so they never get used to the comments while those of us who wear it regularly have learned not to care as much. It’s actually kind of embarrassing when a girl who honestly does look like she’s in costume freaks out at some poor little old lady who was just trying to say something nice. IMO if there’s no malice behind someone’s comment it’s dumb to get so upset about it. Maybe it’s because it touched a nerve?

Another one that is made of pearl chiffon. This one I wasn't so sure about, as I try to stay away from polyester-made Taobao dresses, but it turned out to feel really great.
http://www.shellolita.com/ has been a great resource for me, when looking up second-hand Taobao, as it lists original price and material the items are made out of.

As for non-main pieces, there are stores that make 100% cotton shirts. I don't see any issues with headpieces and accessories.
For shoes, the Chinese measurements do not translate directly to EU shoe size system. Crossing fingers, as I have a package with a pair, that I'm not 100% sure anymore to fit me.

I'm actually half Indonesian (and have Northwest European melting pot). People confuse for half Japanese all the time. In my country especially the people that know I'm interested in Japan ("Oh you like Japan, so you must be half Japanese!!!"), or Japanese because ("Omg you are half, and of course the only type of half Asians that exist are half Japanese!!!). I do have to say that being light skinned, there's not much difference between me and other people that I know who are half Japanese (the same way there is not much difference between White people of different ethnicities lol). But I always tell people I'm half Indonesian, and not Japanese.

Agree about the first part, I don't really get people who think you need to wear shorts under skirts. I mean, unless you're going commando or wearing a small thong, your underwear should be enough to cover your butt. I've been asked to wear a pair of tight tiny shorts that only covered a bit more of leg skin than the panties I had on. The *only* difference is the social understanding of what panties and shorts are, which is really dumb to be.

That's my sin, I guess. No bloomers or shorts, not ever.

I only wear tights, never knee highs or short socks. It seems silly to have to wear spats or bloomers when I'm already wearing underwear and opaque tights. Plus if it's that windy outside I'm going to be wearing a jacket which prevents the skirt from lifting in the first place.

That's your assumption. Bait threads certainly are made out of boredom and just to stir shit up. Does this apply to posts in "confess your sins" or "feels" threads though? I would say that they reflect the average mindset of a person posting here in an unfiltered way, since posts in threads like this don't get the exposure normal threads do and people feel comfortable being genuine and honest when posting there.
>>9796156
This board isn't overrun by non-cosplayers. Contrary to what you said earlier, this board is very obscure and not that well known on 4chan as a whole. We have threads that are more than 5 years old. Even /ck/, which deals with a topic most shut-in neets can't relate to at all, is much faster than this. This board is frequented almost solely by members of the cosplay community.

I understand your sentiment that you shouldn't judge a group of people based on a small sample of 4chan posters, and you do have a point. However, if you take a stroll through the catalog, you will see people sharing their instagram profiles and pics they took while going to anime cons. The people posting here are involved in the community very much and I think that they reflect it quite well too.

In early March of 2017, someone new decided to post in the group I'm part of. She talked about how she got to be invited to be in an elegant goth community in Japan and went there to do so. It made me really angry because I felt like her quality and brand was not up to par to the point where she got funded to be in Japan like this... So I pointed out every little flaw I could find with her both with her dress and life in general when I found her blog and went through old posts she had.

Everyone but about 2 people joined in with me, and it didn't take long to get the girl to stop posting in our group and never show her face again.

I think everyone forgot about her now, but not me. I still try to bring her up every chance I get, even of someone says, shows, or sounds slightly similar to her, I will bring her name up and try to make it seem like the other person is her just because I still feel so much jealousy that a borderline ita got to be in a comm in Japan...

They said
>bc I don't want to stress about stretching out my socks, getting random stains or someone stepping on my brand shoes on the bus
I rarely go to meet but I get this. Certain types of clothes and accessories are less durable or more fragile than others, so it's not that unreasonable to save these for occasions where you'll meet other people who appreciate them, especially if they were expensive. My favorite accessory is a big ass Edwardian hat that is prone to damage, flying off and getting grabbed at by normies who can't keep their hands to themselves. If I wore it every day I'd have to replace it after a few months, so instead I save it for special occasions. This doesn't mean that I'm only into lolita for these special occasions, it just means that I make do with slightly less fabulous headwear for daily wear. Even most normies treat their nicer clothes this way. You've heard of the concept of a Sunday dress, right? My guess is that anon doesn't have the budget to replace their brand accessories on a regular basis. Or maybe she just doesn't want to, idk.
