I guess this belongs here, but I've been struggling with the concept of filters on cosplay photos. I think it's cheating to a certain extent because you're modifying a photo of yourself and the area around you, but at the same time you're not actually photoshopping yourself or your body. I guess what I'm asking is do y'all consider filters cheating or do you think it's fine for pictures?

>cheating
Cheating against what anon? Genuinely curious what you mean by this.

There’s nothing wrong with modest shoop or filters because every competent IRL photog does this, so you can look your best. You’re not “hiding flaws” or any of that bullshit unless you’re sculpting off your nose and ten pounds of leg

>> No.9801177

>>9801160
I mainly mean cheating against yourself. It's this weird mentality I have where I feel if you're using filters as a crutch for your cosplay then it probably isn't that good. And I can't say I haven't done it either, but I feel so dirty using it even if it's to make the light look just a LITTLE darker/lighter

Even without ever editing a photo, it can't ever be an exact image of whatever you took the pic of. The camera itself changes the image, sometimes pretty drastically. So changing things like brightness, saturation or white balance isn't doing anything that the camera itself doesn't do.
Even if you do some additional edits like touching up eyebags, just keep in mind that even supermodels can look like shit if the light or the angle is bad. In the end, every step of your cosplay from the research to the finished piece contributes to making it look good, including taking good pictures, even if it requires alteration. As long as you don't look like the people in the bad photoshop thread you're good.

Repeating my question from last thread as it's a DD and ending in two days, an answer would be super appreciated.

Asked in DD thread, should probably ask here - what exactly are AP sample dresses? Were they test models/initial ones made? The dresses used on display in store? Ones used in shows? Also, is the quality any different than the regular release? One I'm looking at also has a care tag that says do not wash basically, can you not wash sample dresses?

Is there some way to contact the mods about this and get an explanation? I'm genuinely so confused. I just wanna sell this god damn dress.

We're talking sweet-styled, pastel salopettes, right? In that case imo sneakers are fine as long as you get ones that match your overall look. AP's sneakers are just clunky and silly enough to look super cute with salopettes and casual lolita, and pic related is fine too, again given that they match your coord.
Other options that you have are other large clunky shoes and platforms - Not heels, mind you. There are plenty of sweet styled shoes like this and they'll look just as cute (if not cuter) than sneakers.

Thought I'd explain why so few SS deal with Fril - I can't remember off the top of my head if it's Fril itself or just the people who sell stuff on Fril, but they're very "no SS allowed" there and a lot of Japanese people don't want to sell to foreigners, unfortunately. It's not all because they don't like foreigners, but I'm pretty sure they're very big on making sure their items are going to good people who will take care of their stuff (even if it isn't theirs anymore) and don't trust shopping services since they buy for anyone. I do know that FJ can do Fril but I'm unsure if it would set off gaijin alarms with the sellers and they'd cancel. That's why most people use smaller/personal SS like Tenshi and Japonica because the sellers think they're selling to other Japanese people. And plus then you can also use them to buy from Mercari at the same time which no one but these SS can buy from, not even FJ. There's a few others, I just mention Japonica and Tenshi as they're the most popular.

Anything that doesent burn/melt under an iron or give off colour: i have a literal large scrap of fabric, but a regular white (white is best) bedsheet, t-shirt, etc, should work. To make sure the extra fabric doesent melt when ironed, just test the fabric by ironing it beforehand and seeing how it reacts. If OK, wet the fabric slightly, place it over you AP, and iron. If you hear sizzling sounds when you begin to iron, don't wory: that's just the water turning into steam.

The two methods I've mostly been seeing are silicone or latex prosthetics and plushies. I don't like the prosthetics personally, but some people dig them so whatever. Plushies could be nice, if you get a vinyl fabric (kind of like her top) you can have it look very shiny like in the game.
This tutorial lays out the basics:
http://mandisawesomecosplay.tumblr.com/post/165104065619/splatoon-1-cosplay-tentacle-tutorial
You'll need to pattern out the suction cups yourself but they're basically really flat cylinders so it's not too difficult. If the vinyl doesn't work for the gradient you can also try clear PVC fabric and either paint the inside or layer it over fabric or foam with the gradient.

Petticoats, in general, should be about 2" shorter than the skirt. >Did I fuck up trying to coord a mainly white skirt with black?
Bluntly put, yes. I think I understand what you were trying to do but the wines dont match eachother at all and it looks really incohesive/mismatched. I see you tried to balance it with that white bow but it doesnt quite work and just draws attention to how cheaply made the bow in question is; if you're gonna use it in a coord, clip it to a hairbow or something where it's less central.
You'd be more successful pairing that skirt with more white and that same colour of wine/bordeaux, or pairing the top part with just more black until you get the hang of things. Also please lose whatever bright red that is sticking out from the bodice top, it really doesnt match and kind of just looks like you're trying to show off some cheap red lingerie
>Is it too sweet for a gothic coord?
If anything that skirt's old school classic. It's cute but there's no conceivable way for you to coord that gothic.

If you take my advice and keep at it though, I know you can improve anon! We all struggled starting off and understanding balance: it just takes research and practice. Look at coords you like and dont copy them exactly but figure out what makes them work, the formula of sorts for colour repetition and cohesiveness, and copy that. Eventually it'll start to click!

I like to think this can be improved with an actual bustier that has a much higher neckline and less flimsy material; the red cami does look a lot like lingerie. Not gonna lie though, this is like one of the best advertisement not to get that particular overdress, the shirred waist and underbust is just so messy. Maybe you can get a black velvet bustier and put it over the overdress instead of under it, would solve a lot of problems, and then add wine red accents to the outfit.

Or you may be better off just getting a proper lolita blouse, then add a black bolero or cardi to bring the black back in.

Washing brand thread is dead, so.

Bought the Jane Marple Twinkle Logotype JSK recently, it's a polyester dress with glitter screen print on it. It stinks of sweat and storage so I want to wash it. Normally I just handwash 90% of my stuff but I'm afraid to damage the glitter. Tag suggested care is dry clean with petroleum, no perchloroethylene, but I recall in Lolita General months ago people were discussing Moitie screen prints and how you shouldn't get them dry cleaned as it would melt and damage the screen print. I don't know enough about dry cleaning to know if it's because of perchloroethylene or just the process in general.

How should I go about cleaning this to maintain the print? Would dry cleaning be safe?

Thread is saging but oh well, thought I'd reply and say thanks for the replies! I had completely forgotten the conclusion of the thread so this brought me some relief. Dropped it off at the dry cleaners early and emphasized 100% that they better use a petroleum based solution and that it's a very expensive dress and I've seen dresses ruined before, so hopefully they handle it well.

Honestly it can probably be handwashed, it's 100% polyester and not red, but I'm concerned I wouldn't be able to give it a good wash as I'm worried I'd damage or scrape up the glitter print trying to wash it. I don't mind having one dress I always have to dry clean, most of my stuff I either hand or machine wash, I'd just rather be safe than sorry.

If you get an A line you can pin it up into a sort of bell shape should you need one. But I don't think there is any trick to make a bell look A line.
I'd get an A line personally.

I know some people say that getting a petticoat is first priority but I'm in the camp where I think it's kind of pointless to buy one until you know the shape of your dress. Pick a dress then a petticoat

A line it is, then. How do you pin it up? Thanks!
>>9819585
That, too, makes sense. How do you make sure which one the dress is? Thanks!

The best way is to look at the shape of the dress. For cupcake-shaped skirts, go with a bell. For a skirt that flares out with straight sides, use an A-line.
