Friday: nomi
Saturday: ?? depends on guests.
Sunday: tea party

Don't really know if I'm going to cosplay this year. I haven't been watching anime at all lately, and no design particularly interests me.

this is my first year going hopefully! (still not 100% on the travel part). i've wanted to go since i started cosplaying when i was young teen so i'm excited to see other cosplays, shop, and i'll probably go to some events (which i never do at cons). hopefully it's fun and not disappointing.

Its going to be another year of bad guests, uninteresting panels, garbage dealers room and mediocre cosplays. I am mainly going to lobby, party and to contribute to the mediocre cosplay but Im looking forward to it all the same.

Also, another year of me saying that I am going to cosplay kars and end up not cosplaying kars.

Here's a clean 2018 cosplay lineup image for peeps to use. Sorry it's a little plain, busy at work.

>> No.9777488

I've always been a bit curious about this con but at the same time I kind of don't understand what the appeal is. They had a booth set up at a con I was at somewhat recently and I looked through the past guests in the materials on the table and didn't find anything that made me go 'omg they had them???'
So tell me, anons. Why do you go to AN? Because it's the biggest con in Canada? Is the cosplay scene awesome? Do they get cool premieres? I'm not trying to be a dick here, looking for honest answers.

>> No.9777538

>>9777488
personally
1. it's close
2. it's a large con for showing off/ checking out cool cosplays
3. I've been going for 14 years now and I kinda feel a brand loyalty to go?
4. It's a great con to make a lot of dosh in the Artist Alley

I've never gone to see any guests in the 14 years I've been going so I could care less about that. It's just a good con for seeing lots of cosplay and friends.

I started going 12 years ago when I was a weeby teenager and still lived in Toronto. I live up in Northern Ontario now but I still make it a point to go every year. It's more or less a yearly tradition now where I get to see friends. The guests usually don't interest me since I don't watch dubbed anime.

This is the usual corporate BS about Identification. If you show up with old Govt Photo ID which does not match how you look at the moment, and the convention has not been warned in advance, there's gonna be registration problems.

It's definitely coasting on previous success. Guests mostly aren't anywhere as notable as they were 10 years ago but every year there is still one or two good ones. Hard to tell if the management is just not giving as much of a shit or if theres funny business going on wirh finances. Panels have skewed heavily towards progressive politics and social justice in the yaoi North section. By virtue of its size its still a good venue for hanging out with friends or making new ones if youre not too autistic. Some say the cosplay has declined in quality but I still see some impressive stuff every year.

I went there last year expecting a fun con since i was told it's was the biggest con around in canada, except it's was pretty disappointing apart from the vidya area and the amount of cosplayers.

Otakuthon is the place you want to go instead if you want to have fun. Lots of events, lots of special guests holding panels that aren't just simple Q&As, barely up to no SJW shit since Frenchies knows how to focus on what makes the con good, lots of other fun shit you can do. Plus they have a china town just next to the con so you can eat like a weeb, and take up some nice pictures of cosplayers

Anime North is the place to go if you're more of a cosplayer, or want to take up pictures of cosplayers. There's also a little /tg/ community that assembles there but i had no time to partake with them because i was with some pals

>> No.9789367

Not going this year. I might actually stop going altogether. There's at least three other cons to see friends at now in Toronto alone and it's not like we don't all have each other on FB or Twitter or w/e. About the only reason to go was to hook up and go to the rave, and even that sucks these days. Just hook up anyway and go to an actual club or rave if you care.

NAYRT but I'm a staffer at AN from another department and I can see what the other anon is trying to insinuate with that post. The execs at AN are really left leaning, especially the head of programming Eileen. Which is why a lot of the programming have shifted to obscure non anime and Japanese related topics, such as climate change and the rapid growth and expansion of Yaoi North programming. Like for instance a 3 hour panel on gay sex. So it wouldn't surprise me if there's any sort of favoritism for those who check off and register as trans.

The chick who runs the Cafe Nocturne crap is a genuine pedophile (she's 45 or something and had a 13 year old BF at one point) and everyone knows it, but no one will fire her.

The guy who runs panels has demonstrated over and over again that he's a moron who thinks he's smarter than everyone and doesn't communicate properly. Somehow he wound up with competent staff, but he's a complete douche.

Don't even get me started on how shitty the concert and event people are. Drug problem at the rave? Let the cops handle it. People duking it out? Don't try to separate the crowd, wait until someone's hurt and then call the medics. A guest is being an asshole? OH WELL THEY'RE A GUEST.

The number one reason why Anime North is more recognized is because Otakuthon is held in Quebec. A lot of people doesn't give a shit about it because they think it's held entirely in French and believe the people there will shit on them for not speaking the language, but the con itself is for the most part in English and the people who goes there usually knows both languages even if they are Frenchies.

So If you care more about events, panels, and general fun, you'd love Otakuthon more. every hours you'll find a bunch of events/panels/video/tg/games going on, just choose what you like more and you'll be off to go. You'll even find voice actors doing their own panels instead of just simple q&a. You can even try and make your own panel there and the staff will be more willing to receive you compared to AN's no fun allowed demands unless you're a transexual. Last year a bunch of anons held a gachimuchi panel at Otakuthon and they got rejected at AN's.

Hell, doing some sight seeing around Montreal is pretty nice when you got some time to kill or if you want to eat. You got a china town right next to Otakuthon, fireworks by La Ronde which isn't too far from the con, and a bunch of other shit to do compared to AN. The con itself may seem small compared to AN's five hotels, but the wide variety of rooms on each floors makes it more than ideal especially when you compare how much is going on between Otakuthon's and AN's.

Also take note that Anime North is right next to a airport. You'll have a shit ton of planes passing on top of the con every six minutes, which can get pretty annoying

Proves transgender and intersex people, who I never denied exist. Doesn't prove anything about the people who demand special pronouns because they are "neither".

All I see is people who are not traditionally masculine or feminine looking for some special way to stand out, even though there are no rules on what falls "outside" of either. 10 years ago, they would have just been tomboys or "girly guys" and would have felt no need to identify themselves as anything else.

It's almost as if they are looking for a fast answer to why they've had difficult lives, want to fit into a subculture, or are so lacking in personality that they need a to create new genders to feel like they are "unique".

Unfortunately, we aren't allowed to actually talk about this because anyone who disagrees is just thrown ad hominem attacks or called a "bigot" without any sort of discussion.

Not Anime North related, but there's another Next Music from Tokyo show/concert happening in May the weekend before Anime North. I'm not associated with the organizers, but I feel it's a really great show worth mentioning.

Advance tickets are $14, or $20 at the door.

I vaguely remember seeing in past years that you needed at least [insert number] of people or something interested either through an FB event or AN forum posts to apply. If one person organizes a big enough group they can have a photoshoot just to themselves. They also could've figured that the slots are never 100% full and the less popular series can be bumped out to shittier shoot spots if needed.

Really, I wonder if some of these tiny shoots are just from people who don't realize that just booking a private photo shoot with someone is an option.

I think that rule only applied to "large" shoots that wanted to access the photoshoot booking doc first. Like if you knew 100 cosplayers were gonna show up for Pokemon, cause they do every year, you had first dibs on the best/biggest spots.

But it's kinda funny at this point because none of these locations are that great. Large photoshoots are fun to be a part of to see all the different costumes but I feel like the majority of shoots I've attended have had awkward classroom style setups and shoot runners don't really know how to direct people and have fun. Or maybe I'm just old now and the Bleach photoshoots from 10 years ago were only fun because they were new. Oops, rambling.

Do you have any pointers or ideas regarding this? I'm running one of the shoots again this year and have been trying to think of ways to spruce things up ahead of time so it's not just "everyone cosplaying X and X character pose in a big group" shots, but also giving everyone a chance to get in some of the shots in the limited time

>> No.9798198

>>9798139
The big shoots that I had the most fun at had some creativity with the shot setups. So the shoot planner had some ideas setup beforehand with in-jokes from the series itself. Like I was saying before, I had a lot of fun at the old Bleach shoots because dumb stuff happened. Giant group of Bleach cosplayers all yelling BOHAHAHAHA and doing the dumb pose at the top of their lungs, that's fun. Recreating scenes from the manga after the classroom style shoots are done is also fun. Try to think of things that would be fun for the whole group to take part in, bonus points if it's related to your series.

The most boring ones were "Okay, everyone stand in a line, do an action pose. Do a dramatic pose. Everyone "good" in a line. Everyone "bad" in a line. Ok thanks for the shoot". Or the ones where the organizer didn't know how to get people to do anything because they were too timid to yell. Be confident and loud.

This will be my second anime north cosplaying, but first time taking it seriously. I'm a single young guy, 19, and I think I'm reasonably attractive. Is there any "classy" way to hit on girls at a con? By classy I don't mean like fedora tier shit, I just don't want to come off as a typical neckbeard kind of thing. I guess my gameplan was to just treat the con as a regular social interaction like a big party filled with people I don't know, and use cosplay as a jumping off point to enter conversation etc, but is there anything I should specifically avoid doing? I just don't want to come off as a creep

>> No.9835483

Sounds about right. Just act normally like you would anywhere else. Use cosplay and mutual nerdy interests to spark conversations and if they seem into it keep on rolling. If they look uncomfortable, say they gotta go, don't invite you along etc. then don't insist and say your goodbyes. Also remember you are at an anime convention, the other party might be awkward as shit too.

Don't. Actually fucking don't.

>I just don't want to come off as a creep

Since you're a guy, you're a creep by default, you just have to prove that you're not.

Just talk to people and don't be a sperg. If you somehow befriend people, great, see where that goes down the line. But people don't actually hook up and date at cons unless you're drop dead gorgeous.

I'm Canadian and live about an hour away from Toronto. Only other con I've been to was a tiny crummy one in the downtown of my local city. So I can't really speak for how awful anything is compared to other cons, as you seem to be implying. Never been interested in much bigger and more corporate cons, though, especially because they would require me to cross the border.
The dealer's room is far bigger and better than anything else I imaginably have access to (outside of online shopping, of course), so it's really fun and the novelty of it hasn't worn off after 7 years of going. Tons of fun cosplays to see, and always at least a handful of panels that interest me.
It's really just a fun, easily-accessible vacation to go on with friends and enjoy a weekend with.

My rule of thumb is to just go out and try to make friends with who ever, be it guy or girl and see where you go from there. If you are there just to hook up it will show through your body language and most girls are pretty good at picking that up and think you are a creep. Also the only real difference between flirting with a girl you don't know and being a creep is if the girl finds you attractive or not and since you are asking this question, you are probably not as attractive as you think you are.

If Truffles party last year was considered SS teir, Nekkos apop part would be considered as god or legendary teir. For starters, being in cosplay isn't really necessary but it will probably help make you seem more approachable. Just remember that rooms can get quite packed so wearing something thats heavy could be a problem. I've never had this problem because my goal is always to wear as little as possible but we have this guy who always shows up in full armour cosplays and I don't know how he does it all night.

Bringing your own alcohol should be a no brainier but bring a bit extra to share is always nice. Doesn't have to be a full bathtub full of beer or a full majito set like vodka had but an extra shot for the host will go along way.

Probably the biggest turn off for most new people would be is when the initial walk by, they see people already formed into groups or cliques and find it hard to actually approach the meet up in general. Sure alot of us already know each other but if we didn't want talk to new comers, we wouldn't have these kind of events nor would post them on a public forum. I find that we usually have a few people who stand around not really interacting with anyone at first but by the time we get situated at the bar they are usually chatting with people in a group. Also I try my best to talk to everyone I can.

If you are going to throw up, at least try to make it to the toilet. And trust me, someone throws up ever year.

Uh and lastly, don't be that guy who thinks shouting out memes every chance they can is funny. Nobody likes that guy...

They'd like to think that having a lot of attendees = quality, but I can count the number of well-run departments on one hand. The guests suck. Yaoi North is mostly SJW politics. General panels track lacks diversity for a con this size. Shuttle buses to far-off hotels are a joke. Line-up for gaming events are poorly managed. Half of the staff and volunteers are power hungry, inexperienced, and childish. Dealers' Room is full of bootlegs, and they have many known bootleg booths come back year after year. Nothing ever changes because the events director is a bitch and staff are afraid to speak up, so they just keep their mouths shut hope their departments run well.
So, no. AN is far from the best con in Canada.

ok I've stayed quiet for long enough.

2015 FE, Nekko was really nice and offered his hotel for free. I'm a poor university student and I wasn't down to commute from out of the city every day so of course I took up his offer. It was only him and me, I was to sleep on the couch. Friday night I got drunk. I changed into my sleepwear and he made a sexual remark about how I was seducing him by wearing spats (it was just black shorts). It was really late and iirc he heard me sniffling quietly on the couch (I was having a really rough patch with my boyfriend at the time) and insisted that I go sleep with him in the bed, saying that it's more comfortable. I agreed. Later he started spooning me. I don't remember if i reciprocated (was also half asleep) but I might have been comforted by it. But he started grinding against me and (I don't remember how much time has passed, keep in mind I was drunk and half asleep) kissed me. That part really threw me off and grossed me out. I woke up with immense guilt because I was really committed to and in love with -my boyfriend at the time and would never dream of cheating on him.

Anyways after that I tried to keep my distance from Nekko. I didn't want to be lynched by rumors or start drama. I could get over it, I wasn't traumatized/hurt/whatever, so I didn't care enough.

2016 and 2017 cons passed without much incident. I did my own thing and didn't see him much. I try to be friendly and greet him if I see him.

2017 I posted pic related and Nekko (blue) straight up said I should be flattered that someone called me a sex worker. This might seem benign to guys idk but it really crossed the line for me, and I'm sure femanons can agree with me that this is some unacceptable shit. After this point I no longer wanted to be associated with him. I don't have much to explain here.

Also, at my party last year we kind of talked about Nekko and multiple people agreed with me that they felt Nekko was predatory, and 2 different gulls said that felt Nekko preyed on them (yes, they used the word prey). afaik he hasn't outright assaulted people, but he doesn't need to have done so to make me feel really uncomfortable around him. I don't trust Nekko and idc what he thinks, but I'm genuinely worried about naive girls who go to nekko party & his crew of people who can tolerate him.

Are you fucking serious? Anon literally said that they've felt uncomfortable with comments he has made.
This kind of incident is always going to be a he said she said scenario. We don't keep receipts and chat logs of everything, especially if it's offline.

Ngl the sex worker joke was in bad taste and after fe I felt awkward around you thus why i haven't really talked to you since but I feel as you are leaving out a few points in that.
1. I didn't insist on you sleeping in the same bed, I simply offered. I also offered to call down to reception to get an extra blanket if you wanted to sleep on the couch
2. We were discussing the hard ships that we were both going, we talk about the break ups that we both just went through, although I guess now you were broken up at the time? And you were crying and I tried comforting you, which yes you did reciprocate to. I even tried turning away from you during the night and you grabbed my arm.
3. I booked a second hotel room because I decided to stay a second night and I made sure to get two beds yet you still decided to sleep in the same bed as me.
Actually I went to bed before you got back to the hotel room because you were out with your friends and I was already pretty drunk.
4. I don't recall actually grinding unless I was asleep but I probably got a boner because you know being a guy and all but yeah I think that's about the time when you said that you shouldn't be doing this because you still loved you ex
5. I ended up getting out of that bed and sleeping in the other one because you know, that's the proper thing to do in that situation.
But like I said, it got awkward after that I left you alone but I highly doubt people will believe my side of the story.

It was a king size bed, he said he had no intention, and I kept to the very edge, facing away from him. (which he eventually came to my side)

For clarity I've literally never spoken to Nekko but there's nothing to lose so I'll give my 2 cents I guess. In terms of the comments online, yeah they're kind of shady and I can totally understand why you'd be uncomfortable, that's completely fair. As for the situation in the hotel room, I don't think I would consider that a predatory action. You seemed emotional and he offered you to sleep his bed to which you agreed to of your own free will, and then you cuddled with him and might have reciprocated? I don't know the exact situation obviously but for him to try and kiss someone who got willingly into his bed and reciprocated cuddling doesn't seem like a predatory action, it seems like a reasonable next step if any physical intimacy were to happen. As for other people stories, I don't know them so I won't comment on them, but to hear multiple people make accusations like that does mean something in general. Regardless, thank you for giving your story, I'll make sure to keep it in mind and advise female friends I know who are going.

Actually I wish I still had my old phone because I remember I had some gulls over drinking and one of the guys you don't like was laying on the bed you were originally going to sleep in and I sent you a text laughing and you replied back with something along the lines of "That's alright, I'll just sleep in your bed."

NO. I had my bed, and yours was the window bed. You came to my bed and eventually I had to be like yeah sorry I don't want to cuddle, iirc I did say that it was making me feel uncomfortable and guilty so you backed off.
Also you were grinding the first night.

If we're talking about Nekko stories, im going to come clean as well. This was 2016 we had a meet up and I thought it was gonna be a cool idea to meet up with /cgl/ peeps! I was lurking through the thread since im more of a lurker than a poster. Im not gonna say who I cosplayed as because I would rather this be a warning just like >>9839741
has stated. But...my boyfriend at the time was could only make con one day and I decided to chill with with my meet up and there it was Nekko and from what I saw he was fairly built and seemed to attract the other lesser guys here to him. At first impression he was rather quite friendly! we had similar humor and we got along well since he wasnt awkward! Later he started getting a little friendly and like...I mean way too friendly he started massaging my shoulders and I admit felt nice at first but I started getting creeped out...I laughed it off and sat on the bed to just watch everyone talk and I started asking my friends what to do! They said to leave but I was having too much fun. So I toughed it out and then I got a bit buzzed and he grabbed my butt and thats when I decided to bolt! Everytime I see him now I just try to avoid him and I never told my boyfriend about it when he came by to pick me up...well we aren't together anymore so no point in rubbing salt in wounds! Ladies be wary of Nekko he thinks lifting gave him confidence

I'm not justifying his behaviour, but don't act like you are innocent. He made a sexual comment that bothered you, and then agreed to cuddle with him instead of saying no? The only reason I didnt say that I was 100% sure about this incident is because I could not recall the entirety of that weekend but after thinking it back over I can break down both meet ups and what happened each night.

Friday: Meet up was small, anon who hosted the year befores party said we could drink in his room, not much was going on, we ordered a pizza and headed out shortly after, another anon knew of party, we went there but Me, and my friends ended up dipping because coke got busted out, we went back to my room to play some sdvx and I posted on cgl, those two parties that I mentioned earlier came, after my wig was knocked over and fixed someone started throwing up so they ended up leaving to take care of him and i pretty much packed it up.

Saturday: Meet up was big, we went to the bar, same anon hosted another party, way too many people, we all said we were going to the bathroom meet, mostly everyone cleared out, except a handful of us, it was pretty chill and a lot better than the night before, my friend ended up drinking all my beer so we dipped, to go to the rave, the rave was lame so we went back to my hotel, ended up running into a cgl guy in the parking lot and chilled with him for a bit, night was over at like 3 am

Oh plus I just finished losing a shit ton of weight after pretty much not drinking for 6 months so I was sipping on molson 67 both nights and wasn't overly drunk.

Someone asked about Neko and parties somehow it came up that Neko is creepy or predatory, anons asked for proof, one confession came out saying Neko grinded against another anon after he insisted she sleep in his bed, another anon also came out saying Neko grabbed her ass at a party, Neko didn't really deny that saying he had no recollection of it but didn't outright deny it, truffle (I still don't know who this is) also apparently disliked Neko for similar reasons but didn't want to bring it up or expose him for some reason.
