How can I make my bag less lifeless? I have the whole window filled but I'm not overlapping everything so there's gaps where the insert shows through, and the acrylics are transparent. I've got a subtle pattern to make it pop more but I'm wondering what kind of trimmings do people use? I don't think lace or flowers would suit my boy.

>> No.9846540

You can washi tape the back of your charms. If lace or flowers aren't suitable, you could just go to a crafts store or browse aliexpress and look at scrapbooking notations until you see something a bit more fitting maybe? Or if he has any motif items or something from his series that could be useful

You can print out a background you like for the charms instead and encase it along with the charm between two sheets of vinyl. Carefully heat seal the edges with an iron/flat-iron and trim off the excess. Very similar effect, no risk of damage. If anything, it's extra protected against scratching/items dangling against eachother.

Are their any items or symbol that your boy is known for? Or maybe a favorite food? Like my boy is known to have a pet bird so I try to find little bird charms to fill in the gaps. You can also try making/buying rosettes if you have badges. I'd say try walking around a craft store to see if anything sticks out to you. I've done it a couple of times when I got stuck with my own bag and I was surprise to find some of the stuff I did.

Alright gulls how do we liven this bag up? I nabbed all this stuff at a local con yesterday and since I had the bag figured may as well. Since it’s a small window, not sure what else to do with it apart from an insert and a ribbon or rosette on the badge up top. Question is what color to go with. They’ve all got reddish hair tones so maybe that?

So, I'm currently trying to bid on a badge on YJA and each time I place a bid (using FJ), as soon as the "processing bid" page is done loading I'm instantly outbid? I've tried about 4 times now, and even while attempting to process my bid, it said that my current offer had been outbid. However, checking my past bids I was the lowest and the new highest bid somehow managed to beat FJ's loading screen?

Am I stupid and missing something, or is someone actually actively bidding against me? I've been watching this listing for about two weeks now, and it had to be relisted at a lower price since it didn't sell the first time. Because they're usually a way for people to bypass spending big money on official merchandise. I mean why hunt for weeks and pay proxies for that rare item when you can just grab some poorly drawn fanart charms from your local con's artist alley, fill your bag with those and get instant attention for "supporting the series you love" lol.

There's exceptions to the fan rule eg your series has a ton of official merch (love live, utapri, dangan, tourabu, pokemon, YOI, sailor moon, CCS, any flavor of the month I could name a load). But if you're bagging a western show like Voltron or Korra you have next to no choice.

It's about buying official when it's there and not using fanmerch as a way of cutting corners. You can use fan as a filler until more official comes out, but your main bag should always be more official. Japanese baggers, who invented this god damn hobby, frown HARSHLY on bags with more fan than official. They're just polite enough to shit on you in private instead

Like a lot of other anons have said, we've been over this quite a bit on the thread. General consensus for the most part is that fanmerch isn't always a bad thing/looked down upon.

What is looked down upon is when you use fanmerch as the bandwagon/cheap option. People often don't/won't import merch because of how pricey it can be. Others are just scared of doing it for some reason. When you fill a whole bag with stolen art of Ali/eBay knockoffs, that's looked down upon. When you go to a con and buy an overpriced knockoff Wego heart bag and buy all your charms at the con, that's looked down upon. Some people like to mix the two because sometimes people find the official merch ugly. It honestly comes down to the bag in question, as well as the person's opinion on official vs fanmade.

For me, my husbando has very limited official merch. I'm personally not a fan of screen shot buttons, so I chose to go the fanart route with my fan art bags. That being said, I also have two bags that are all of his official merch to date. He has a decent amount of official Reaper merch, but zero official Gabe merch. Pic related is my Valentine's day shrine.

Sorry for blogpost.

Sure thing! The bag is pretty flimsy so you'll def need a strong enough insert to help support the bag itself. Here's a picture of my insert next to the bag! There's a little piece of velcro that keeps the insert pocket separate from the big part of the bag on the inside, and I just decided to use that to help support the weight. I only have two thin layers of foam and it's not enough to support it. Though, the two guns I have pinned at the bottom are quite heavy.

From white dot to white dot, it's around 8.75 in.
Blue to blue is around 8.25 in.
Width of the heart is 10.25 in.

My insert is 12 inches by 14 inches. I didn't make it as wide as the pocket but it's about as tall. You can kind of see the heart shape on my insert - sorry for such the crap quality picture. If you need anymore of the inside of the bag, I'd be happy to help!

Concrit:

Don't use grosgrain ribbon for the tales because it'll frey easily when cut. You could seal the edges but really you should use a more silky type of ribbon that doesnt mind being cut against the grain.

Why do have polka dot tails when your main body doesn't contain polka ribbon?

The ribbon for the bow is way too tiny. You could use a curling iron and curl it though that'd be cute deco.

You don't have a solid base in the middle so it looks cheap and will fall apart easily. Consider pleating a circle first then attaching bows around the outside. You need the basis of the rosette first. Also the same ribbon layered twice looks a bit weird swap one for the estranged polka

If you've been lurking for a long time, you should have already come to a conclusion yourself, since this topic gets brought up frequently in many threads.

I've tried finding them but so far no luck. I can find plenty that use the rounded star ones(I think they're WEGO but I'm not 100% sure) but not these. Last week I took a friend of mine to a meet up, she barely gets to socialize due to her workschedule, it was a mixed group, mostly lolitas, some 'normal' weebs and cosplayers. When we showed up several people started bitching and insulting her because her bag (which is beautiful by the way) consists of buttons designed by her and a handmade doll. She owns every single piece of official merch of this singer, every cd, clothing, etc. ... you name it, she has it. People are ridiculous, what if the pins that exist are cute, but don't fit the whole theme you're going for?

Personally I would LOVE to be able to make my own merch for a bag! One thing I would worry about is it all looking the same though.

Also, as was mentioned previously, it depends on the person. One thing you need to keep in mind is you're not making this itabag for anyone else. It's for YOU, anon, and your love of your character! A lot of people make bags and just post them to get a lot of likes and validation. At the end of the day, all that matters is the fact that you're proud of your bag. Nobody is off limits to making a bag just because their character isn't from an anime or doesn't have official merch. But another thing to keep in mind is that if there is official merch of your character, it's great to buy it so you can support the series!

If its a canvas bag you might be able to, cotton dyes well but you gotta be careful with the plastic. Look for cold dyes for non-synthetic fabrics, it's your best bet to keep the window safe. I'd still test on a piece of vinyl of same/similar grade to make sure it'll be okay (and on a similar canvas if possible).
Or just commission a bag with the color you want.

When the straps came out I tried looking for my character but nobody sold him. The one time I did find him for sale it was the same price as a box. I resorted to buying the whole box and luckily found someone who was ok with taking my extras. Ironically, now that the set has been out a while I've passed by the strap for sale and for good prices! It starts with one bag. Then it splits into a bigger bag for that character, so you can fit more items. Then you get the need for a bag for another character you love, and then another. Maybe you have the willpower to only make one bag at a time, so as not to spend all your money at once, but the thought is always there with you. You see great deals for some pieces you really want, and you think 'well, I'm not making that bag -yet-, but grabbing that merch now when its cheap will save me money in the long run, so its totally ok'. And then boom, you have 6 bags planned, all in varying states of creation, checking sites every other day for things, eyeing your 'modest' budget, hating it for being inadequate, and trying to bulk it up a skimming a few corners on actual necessities.

Not that I'd know or anything. This is all just conjecture.

Hey /cgl/ can I get some opinions/advice? I bought the wego fake leather tote in S for the crossbody strap. I'm sick of totes right now bc I have about 4 planned. I also needed something deep seeing how I have the SDC tsum things on preorder (will add pics in reply). However I already think the bag is too small T^T. The tsums would take up the bottom 1/3rd of the bag. Are there any crossbody bags with deep windows or should I stop panicking and see how I can rearrange this stuff?

So I'm new to the itabag scene but is this really the way people see reselling of merch someone doesn't want anymore? Because I have had times where I was convinced I wanted all the cute things from a series ever, but then the shiny wore off and I just realized I wasn't into it anymore. I'm not sure my incidences of this happening will change just because I feel like displaying my gear on a bag, if I get tired of something then I'm tired of it. Selling it or trading it is better than letting it collect dust. I've never bought things just for attention.

I think it depends how long you've liked the character/series. There's lots of series that I liked and had lots of fun talking to others about when they were showing, but then a season or two later I'd mostly moved onto something else. I think its the same way for a lot of itabaggers, at least the ones that you see selling tons of merch all at once, they got crazy into something, but then the glitz wore off and they found something else. I've only got a few bags I'm working on, but they are all for characters I have loved for many years, and that I know I will always come back to, so I'm not too afraid of falling into a money pit.

Those plush are adorable. Consider me jelly.
As for your question, are you going to put all the tsums in the bag, or just the Jotaro and Kak ones? Looking at pic, it looks like you should still have plenty of room for badges and things in the bag once you put the tsum tsums in, they would probably only take up the corners I'm thinking. A little rearranging might be necessary, but I think you could fit in everything with only a bit of overlap. Unless you are planning to take your bag to an upcoming con, you can always just buy a bigger bag if they don't.

Aside from the ones listed, I don't like when people decorate their bag with shit that doesn't fit the character. A lot of base bags have cute bows, scallops, lace, heart shapes, flowers, etc. which looks really weird with certain characters.
I mean, there is a way to make it work (like a lot of the cute Reaper stuff), but you have to make it look intentional.
Most of the time it's just a serious/dark/cool character in a cutesy dolled-up base bag and it's just a bit jarring to me.

People who whine about being "too poor" to make an itabag and behave like you MUST be rich if you have one.
I wore my first ever itabag to a con a couple years ago, I was so happy to get compliments from fellow fans of the series only to get someone knock down my mood by telling me how much they wish they could get one too but that merch was soooo expensive and they couldn't afford it at all. They completely disregard me when I tried to explain I had a small budget myself and that I had managed to make it by making the base bag myself, buying second hand items for cheaper and having been collecting for several months, a bit at the time, until I had enough.
Nowadays I don't give a crap but that one time, their unwillingness to even hear me out left me honestly kinda upset, considering it was my first bag, I had been gathering all my merch for ages and how excited I was to wear it out.

>> No.9859888

>>9859877
I don't get the the "too poor" mentality for two reasons:

1. Secondhand merch from Japan is dirt cheap depending on series and character. I mean 50-100 yen cheap and if you're lucky you can get cheap lot auctions for under $50.
2. This is a luxury thing. Bags started to showcase your collection on the go. Implying to have a bag you had a collection to begin with. If you're not willing to put out the cash, don't have a bag.

In the end it comes down to people being too lazy to get good deals and too cheap to buy merch and passing it off as being "too poor".

Too poor before meant "I can't spend 50% of my paycheck on merch.." but now too poor means "I don't want to spend $50 to make this bag. Can't I just get a handful of badges from the Hot Topic bin?"

http://crosspistols.com/review-to-alice-itabag there's a really good review of the original bag! The biggest giveaway is usually the fact the merchandise can slide behind the white part at the front, I've never seen a knockoff that has the fabric separation like the original. Sometimes it can be hard to tell from just the bow, but this pic has stitching around the edge which is probably the easiest giveaway. They're usually the lowest quality ones from my experience too unfortunately.

I'm not a richfag by any means my salary barely reaches $1k a month (I'm part time because of health) but you know what I do? I save. I buy a little each month and I build it up slowly. I keep track of what's rarer to get and if I'm tight that month I'll pass a common item incase that grail comes up. I hate that people feel like they're constantly entitled to be a part of a hobby, especially a luxury hobby like this. Anon you were originally replying to and I know, I completely agree with all you said.
That's exactly what always try to explain to people when they tell me they cannot afford to make one but really want one. That specific person at the con I mentioned simply wasn't even interested in listening, simply put on the "boohoo I can't afford something so expensive" and quite literally turned away as I began to explain I budgeted and collected over a long period of time.

I understand if you are young, still in school and don't have a way to pay for your own hobbies but it's pretty much what other anons said: you don't HAVE to participate in a hobby if you can't afford it? It's not a necessity and you aren't entitled to it.
I personally adore lolita and would love to have a gorgeous wardrobe but I don't earn enough to pay for it atm (I mean, I could by saving up and budgeting, I just wouldn't wear them out enough to justify the money), so I just sit back and appreciate it on other people. I certainly don't whine to my lolita friends how I'm oh too poor to be in the fashion and imply they must be be rich for wearing it.

Good God this. I check the FB sales page pretty often, as most people have very reasonable prices, but on every single WTB/ISO post there's always the same three people with the same three 'check out my etsy I make custom badges!' posts of just the crappiest drawings imaginable. If you are actually a good enough artist, people will come to you, ther is no reason to spam up the page with your overpriced crayon-tier drawings.

My biggest pet peeve right now is the sudden wave of people who are just lazy as shit. 'WTB -insert extremely popular character here-' Like bitch did you even attempt to look for them? The part of this that bothers me most is defacing fan merch. Like I get that once you buy it it’s yours to do with what you will but if I saw someone had drawn a dumb meme over a charm I worked really hard on I would feel pretty insulted and hurt. Official merch is another thing. You’re not likely to run into the original creator at a con or on the net, so drawing on it just ruins the resale value.

Ive always been heavy into collecting type hobbies, regardless of whether its in a bag or not. So its not really new to me. I have thousands of dollar worth of plastic and dresses in my house. Ive never been bothered by it because it brings me joy and I'm responsible with my money. Its not just the material item that I enjoy either. I love searching for the item, "the hunt" of it. I enjoy setting up nice displays in my house for my collectibles. And of course being a part of the niche communities for them.

I got into itabagging because I thought it's a good way to store, organize, and display the items I have and collect.

but why not go on the amiami website and see for yourself?
I don't understand this mindset, I had a girl ask me about how pre-orders on amiami work and then went on and on about how she can't afford some merch and it was just ridiculous.
All this just because I set up a sales post for a pre-order split, it's like inviting people to talk to you about their unrelated problems.

Theres a lot of 'hey I'm looking for a blue bag, someone sell it to me for $10' and 'I'm selling my handmade charms which I advertise in every fucking post and no one buys them but I'll continue to keep spamming them' posts, which are very annoying, but theres still a lot of pretty good deals. Its also a good place to find box splits.

>>9861850
In the vein of bootlegs, I recently bought some things, and the girl I bought from included a strap from a completely different fandom in my order as a 'gift'. The items I bought were authentic, but the random strap has no print on the back and I'm 100% sure is a bootleg. Since its a gift, and her prices for the things I bought were good, I'm not exactly mad or anything, and simply thanked her for shipping so quickly but I have no idea what to do with this now. I have the feeling she must have also gotten it randomly, and was just getting rid of it by passing it along to me. I wouldn't feel right trying to pass it off as legit and sell it, but what do? Should I just toss it? Do I give it away to someone as a gift, continuing the tradition?

>> No.9862091

>>9862083
I'd say do some research into the strap if you can? I know the trademark on the back is usually a good tell for legit/bootleg but iirc there are some official straps without the stamp on the back.

it's upsetting seeing swimmer bags being sold for like $50 (plus shipping~)on the fb group, but most weebs are too cheap to spend that much money on a base bag (at least), even on japanese listings they're raising their prices.

In what bizarro world does this logic make sense?
Why do so many people forget that itabagging (and lolita and cosplaying, etc etc) are luxury hobbies? Sure, they are doable on a budget, and theres good bags that were made with <$200, but holy shit how does it attract so many broke-ass bitches? These are the only hobbies (except videogames) I've seen where people are so proud of buying bootlegs and ripping the original artists and companies off. Yet these are the same people who wail up a storm if a tumblr artist gets their work stolen by some chinese company.
