the silho is wrong, the bodice sags both vertically and horizontally, and the upper sleeve is also baggy. The jacket length might look better if the skirt had structured poof but the ill-fitting outer, insufficient poof, horrible wig, and costumey styling makes this ita buddy.

I think it's less handmade =/= ita, and more bad sewing taking a co-ord from passable to looking homemade very quickly. When I was a novice seamstress, I spliced a generic Simplicity bodice with some bits from an issue of ONS, and that worked alright for me - never wore the lace monster I created but it was an important learning experience. Handmade becomes ita because of either time constraints or the inability to critique one's work. It's hard when you've spent time, money and effort creating a dress which looks like shit, but you have to make the shit dresses to make the pretty ones. The problem is these autists lack the ability to critically reflect on their work and wear handmade garbage that looks like Milanoo precum, rather than just recycle the crap dress and wear a different outfit.

Just a little heads-up for anyone else who wants to make their own dresses, all of Simplicity's "lolita" patterns have huge design flaws. All of them are guaranteed ita-makers if you sew up the patterns as they were written. Every time a Simplicity design came out the homemade/sewing thread collectively slapped their heads and groaned.

If you need sewing patterns, I'd suggest any issue of otome no sewing, or learn how to draft your own patterns. Just avoid anything Simplicity, they're like the Milano of sewing patterns, the base is kinda shit and needs a lot of mods to look halfway decent, let alone non-ita.

Something that short with peeking bloomers might look adorable on someone with a very petite build, but on a larger lady it looks like an adult baby fetish.

I think this is an accumulation of small problems that just make a big mess. The dress, apart from being too short for her, is also just generally ill fitting - it probably DOES have a small petti under it, but it looks more like a mumu on her figure than something being artificially puffed out. Her boobs look loafed, and the under-bust seam is looking stretched. Her wig needs styled - the curls need loosened out of those costumey ringlets, and the fringe needs trimmed into a nice fringe. I like the darker bloomers because while they aren't an exact match to the darker purple details on the print, they do help balance it. The parasol/brolly might be there for practical weather reasons, so I don't want to crit it too much, but she should have left it out of the coord photo as it doesn't match. The socks are stretched out on her and look really uncomfortable. White shoes unbalance this - she should have gone for navy. She's not the worst ita, really, but it's more how her outfit doesn't flatter her figure that tips this over the edge. It's not that the clothes don't go with each other that's the worst thing, it's that they really don't fit her.

The dress is frumpy and ill-fitting on her. The outer 'jacket' layer, especially is baggy in the wrong places, and would have worked better if the sleeves were two sections rather than three. Personally, I'd ditch the long sleeves entirely, and turn it into a cap-sleeve OP. The outer jacket layer is also too flared for the underneath skirt layer. I think it could actually be fixed as a dress if someone could take it in and alter it. Wig looks really cheap and the style doesn't suit her, plus it needs bangs. The hair flower doesn't match her outfit. She could probably use the extra fabric from removing the sleeves to make a matching headdress. I wonder if she takes sewing concrit, because she could learn from the mistakes in this and either a) re-make the dress or b) make a better dress next time.

Mainly I was trying to say avoid Simplicity’s “lolita” patterns, McCall’s has some lolita patterns that aren’t quite as special snowflakey, so they aren’t as bad as Simplicity’s.

Otome no sewing is still the safest option by far. Comes from people who previously made gosurori, does brand collabs, they “get” what lolita is, and whatever isn’t lolita is another jfashion, not a clown costume. The biggest problems I’ve seen are that it’s written in Japanese, so while the diagrams make it easy to follow, it probably shouldn’t be the first dress you put together. The other common problem is anons complaining the sizes don’t fit right on them, which is the point where you have to learn either how to draft patterns for yourself, or how to alter patterns to fit you better.

I have made a few jacket coords but I didn't use the simplicity pattern in question--I used a vintage 90s business casual pattern and increased the flare in the sleeves and the lower part of the jacket. I believe it's because the sleeves are a little less wide than normal. I had the mini sleeve JSK of this print at one point. The sleeve coverage is a little less than a normal OP. But it's perfectly wearable as an OP, but may not be as flattering depending on your arms.

1)Research research research.
2)Don’t try to go into it an not expect to spend hundreds on items. Being cheap will result in a cheap coord that will 98% of the time look bad and be posted here.
3)look at brands models and even CoF and see what people are liking. That’s a good way to start learning what is acceptable and what isn’t. Reading the comments on CoF will also help you know what in a coordinate needs to be fixed.
4)full sets do help you get a decent coord of your new and help you get a feel for color understanding.
5) take your coord and place if next to someone either a model or someone who is good on coordinates and see what makes their cordinate better then yours and make adjustments where you see obvious issues in yourself. You will find a lot of the time it’s your headdress socks or shoes that need to be changed. Sometimes it’s just your face and lack of makeup, put a sticker over your face and use that to see what’s wrong with your coordinate.
6) don’t make some cringy persona and don’t use the fashion to ego boost you above others. Don’t use it for attention grabbing and don’t think you will be YouTube famous because you post about your blog everywhere. It’s annoying and no one likes an attention whore.
7) try out many styles and cuts of dresses, blouses, wigs, shoes and petticoats. You do this to learn what cuts flatter your body and what cuts to avoid.
8) just stay away from replicas. Only aspies buy replicas. If you want a print, and it doesn’t fit, there is nothing wrong with getting it and using it as a goal piece, or even keeping it because you like it. Many lolitas feel the dresses are community property, your money not theirs.
9)and finally, it’s not the end of the world to be posted in the ita thread. We all make mistakes. It’s about how you handle the crit you get in an ita thread and how you improve over time. Don’t be scared to make a mistake since you learn from them if you are not stubborn.
