I find this really interesting because it might be something to consider bringing up with new Lolitas. Of course there are people who feel fine with wearing replica items, but I think it's important to talk to new people coming into the fashion about how it could create a negative association with Lolita in their minds if they are not careful to pay attention to their feelings.

Does anyone have an organza petti and a hard tulle one? Which one is poofier, and what is the benefit of the organza one.

I have MeLikesTea's Hard Tulle poof monster which was massive poof but deflated over the years. Now I'm not sure which material to choose for the best giant poof. Organza doesn't seem like it gives that much, compared to hard tulle, but is popular, so I'm curious.

>> No.9905353

>>9905344
Tulle is crap, it relies on stiffness to achieve volume and is bound to lose its poof eventually, while organza is a soft fabric that relies on layers for volume.
I've had one tulle petti literally a decade ago when I was a dumb newbie, never bought another one since. The poofiest petti I own now is from Wunderwelt, it has two layers of organza with the fabric folded over, so technically they're four layers, and it's a poof monster. I don't foresee it losing its volume anytime soon.
TL;DR: Pick a petti made out of organza, organdy, or even chiffon if you can find one. The more layers it has, the more durable it is.

Hard tulle is amazing when you first get it because it's super light and super poofy. With wear and storage, it will flatten. It might take six months, it might take two years, it just depends on your lifestyle.
Organza relies on layers as well as it's natural volume. It will be a little heavier than tulle. Organza lasts a very long time with proper storage (don't crumple it up and shove it in a tiny space!) and is very comfortable to wear. I expect you can get a few years out of an organza petti.
Voile is the fabric that will last longer than the nail polish on your toes. It doesn't quit, ever, because all it is is layers of amazingly soft fabric creating volume. It is heavy, tough, and well suited for velvets and thick cottons.
I have had all three, and I adore organza for how light it is, but for the interest of budgeting and a long lasting petticoat, I went for voile from MeLikesTea. I still recommend organza for comfort and shape.

If your skill level is zero, then this is unattainable. Many people don't have someone to teach them - not only how to sew, but also how to select the best fabric for each project. Yeah, some fabric stores offer classes, but that requires you to live near one.

If your comm meets monthly, how often would you expect to repeat a main piece in a year? 12 meets, 12 main pieces? 6? 3? How many are just enough? How many are ideal?
How many main pieces do you own?

>> No.9905637

>>9905630
You can coord a main piece different ways, so maybe 2-3 repeats a year if you have various blouses/accessories. Some main pieces are easier to coord in various ways. I think sweet lolita is easier to coord in lots of styles, since there are often several colors you can coordinate with different blouses and tights.

>How many are just enough? How many are ideal?
That's completely subjective and dependent upon your budget, your desire to collect/wear more pieces, and your financial ability to expand your number of main pieces.

>> No.9905675

>>9905630
I'd say absolute minimum of 3 main pieces so I was not just trading 1-2, 1-2 each time. 6 is good, only using each 2x. 12 is ideal, no repeats of a main piece in a year. I have not counted my main pieces, its more than 12 though. One thing I really notice is shoes and how people neglect them, and have way too few pairs and many are just not good for lolita.

I've tried the AP and Qpot ones. It's usually the thumbs that are really narrow, but I'm not sure if I just have wide thumbs (am an Asian so you'd think they'd fit lol). The difference is not a lot though, usually you can just see like a tiny strip of your nail outside the nail foil on either side, so it still looks pretty good.

Adding to >>9905695. If you find pattern drafting somewhat daunting, there's a few places like patternlab.london where you can buy a custom pattern for yourself. Just plug in numbers and then let someone else draft the pattern for you.

If you get a basic sloper, you can learn how to modify the patterns into dress patterns and blouse patterns. Take the GLB and OnS patterns as inspiration for how to put together things, but use your own custom-size patterns and modify them instead of using the pattern sheet that comes with the GLB and OnS.

Honestly because making actual clothes is fucking hard and very expensive in the west. I am a novice and I only use Otome no Sewing for accessories, or smaller easier items.

On the other hand I think they really helped the Chinese market take off. Many Taobao dress patterns can be found in OnS and GLB or resemble AP cuts. It's much easier and cheaper to get nice fabric and trim there. Notice that pretty much all Western brands severely lack in trim, lace and detail, yet charge $200-300 while Taobao dresses can have a lot of trim, lace and dangly details for only like $100.

>> No.9906108

>>9906022

I don't think taobao is using GLB/OnS patterns -- the funky ones are using designs you don't even see in GLB/OnS, meanwhile the shitty shops are so shitty I've seen one that's on Yumi King level bad, definitely not using GLB/OnS either.

Agree with you on why it's easier to just buy a dress rather than invest time and money into learning how to sew (assuming you're standard size and fit into most clothes easily), but.

I don't think that's what OP is asking, though. People can and do take up sewing clothes as a hobby, so regardless of how easy it is to throw $100 at a taobao store it has nothing to do someone sitting at home cutting and running fabric through a sewing machine to turn into a dress, the same way you can buy a poster but some people still put paint on paper and draw decent art. Yet with all the GLB and OnS patterns out there, people still kind of make really ugly dresses when it comes to lolita.

I'm with the anons who said half the battle is finding decent fabric, but also I think some people just have bad taste. Somehow there's always that person who thinks if she's making a three-tiered dress it would be awesome if each tier was a different colour that didn't go with any of the other tiers, or that purple is wonderful with khaki, or if they're already fat then they don't need a petticoat, a billion other incredibly tasteless design decisions.

I actually don't think they're any more handicapped or worse than normal people, but rather with normal clothes you only make a small tiny body-fitted dress instead of using 3 metres of eye-blinding fabric. You'd also wear a bright normie dress with some minimal shoes and accessories, minimising the impact, but with lolita you would a head-eating bow out of the same eyesore fabric, rings and jewellery, fart some wristcuffs out of whatever junk is left over, a "matching" bag, and then a frilly blouse. The lack of taste just adds up really quickly.

They've been using scrap/leftovers for things. So far I've seen Rose Cross (2007), Cross Arch (2011), Holy Cross (2010), and St Peter's Cross (2006). If you look, Neo Gothic Arch has different lace on the OP and JSK, which is an odd choice. Same goes for the NGA headdress, could have had a variety of laces. My girlfriend wears lolita on a regular basis, usually classic or gothic, and I'd like to coordinate with her a LITTLE, since we go out on dates and tea sometimes. However, when I try to find male equivalents, it's all super fucking cringey steampunk garbage or "four hundred year old homosexual vampire" apparel. It's pretty niche, you'll need to be creative to put together something that's subtly different and not outright alternative.
Take the dude on the right in this pic as an example: >>9906247 If it's too much for you, you can leave the bowler hat out and switch the bowtie with something else like a ribbon tied into a nice bow. It is gatekeeping. A lot of Japanese lolitas don't want the burando circulating outside of glorious nippon. Japanese people are notoriously xenophobic so this shouldn't come as a surprise to you.

I'm glad that the designers of all the major brands love that their life's work is bought and enjoyed by people all around the world. >> No.9908628

>>9908545

Seems a little bit of both. Way back when the discussion was about yja and mbok, on egl some anons living in Japan said that some shopping services ignore seller's terms of sales, which often required an introduction, and then the sellers started banning shopping services because they couldn't be sure who they were selling clothes to.

Think of it this way. If you were selling on lacemarket and had a clause that said "please message me so I can quote you shipping", not only did the buyer not message you and you had no idea what shipping to put down, then you click their profile find out that they're a 40-year-old dude. Would you cancel the sale and then block this guy from all future sales? Then he tells you it's not for him, he's buying it for his chinese lolita friend but can't tell you who this lolita friend is, can't introduce her, can't provide her facebook, can't provide photos (I mean, no SS is going to ask you for all that to show the seller... probably???). How hard are you gonna block his ass now? And maybe let your friends know there's a potential sissy trying to buy used clothes from girls?

Then the shopping service comes back and gently lets you know the seller refused to sell to you and uhh, maybe in future they won't do these phone auction sites as they're less safe than yja and the sellers seem much pickier, or something.

(This story being partly true. I looked up my SS's account on yja once. Like for real, it clearly states that he's a 40-year-old dude. And I've been buying so many dolls, doll clothes and lolita dresses through "his" account....maybe he just tells yja sellers it's for his daughter, idk )

It happens quite often at their online shop that something is sold-out and a few days later it's back in stock, though only in a limited quantity. It's either that they update their online shop with the stock that is left over at their physical stores, or they have a small back-up stock in case too many people order at the same time and they don't want to cancel orders.

It's really weird though that this happens to an MTO item since MTO usually means they really have 0 items left but the demand for it was way bigger than they expected

I don't think Japanese SSs do this, but if you browse taobao and weibo, sometimes you see shops posting a sign with huge giant letters that seem very angry -- something to the effect of they don't bargain with buyers, please don't shoot if disagree with the price, etc etc. So I think it does happen, but with taobao SS, not Japanese.

Japanese SS I don't think they bother. It's not ingrained in their culture to dime every penny they can get, and they're kind of more indoctrined to follow the rules and not cause trouble for other people.

Lolita fashion is really not posted that much as a big street style in sites posting Harajuku street snaps anymore. What is your opinion on that? What does it mean for the style? Has lolita become a niche gentrified and more formulaic style and is it no longer a viable and evolving street fashion?

Just some things I’ve been wondering about.

>> No.9912977

>>9912742
No they're not? The original colours were light blue, some weird magenta, and blackxgold.

>> No.9912988

>>9912969
It's definitely seen as more formulaic, although I feel there's a lot more innovation and creativity in recent trends with the different cuts, accessories, and style hybrids like lolita/larme.
In a way it makes me sad to see the fashion become so... rigid, I guess? Rigid and delicate and too ethereal for real life; but at the same time, the general image of the style or what people (whether within the style or outsiders) perceive it to be doesn't stop me from doing what I want with it, so I don't really mind.
My coords are quite consistent aesthetically, even samey, but I wear them daily and do "allow" myself to loosen up on the "rules" so I can wear the fashion in a way that's comfortable to me. Meanwhile randos occasionally recognize my style as lolita and are impressed with the fact I wear it daily, so in a way I "promote" the street style nature of it on a micro scale, and I believe that every daily lolita also contributes to this.

TL;DR: Yeah lolita's becoming a bit rigid and seems to be leaning into being very specifically for special occasions, but it doesn't affect me directly and I do my share of showing a different image of the style, so I'm not completely bothered by this turn of events.

And now people trying to be BJDs and I have to explain all this shit to random normies because some idiot decided to be an even more special snowflake? Sod this shit, I'm out.

The only feasible way I can see myself attending a meetup with one is if the original Lulu herself came, **and** it was sponsored by an actual brand (and written up on their brand web page). I'd go to see the spectacle, maybe get myself into group photos for the event report. But some random no-name person decides to shove a kigu meetup into lolita, I'm rolling my eyes and noting her down as the most special of snowflakes, the kind that should be avoided because eventually they'll do something really dumb and I don't want to get caught up in their dumb drama.

That, and girls around here aren't that loaded anyway. Either the girl has a decent kigu but shitty lolita coords, or she has nice coords and a really creepy-looking kigu, or both of them are equally shitty. I don't want my face plastered next to her failure, thanks.

I think you are grossly overestimating how much Lulu is "trending". It only seems that way because you follow very niche interests. I guarantee she isn't trending that much in Japan, and this is just as creepy.

Also is it just me or does anyone else feel like most of the people in this image are most likely men?

I own BJDs, anon. I wear lolita to BJD meetups.

Rarely bring BJDs to lolita meets though. I only have burando for the 1/3 dolls and they're heavy to lug around. I might bring them if someone asks but apparently no one has any interest, so that's that.

This is probably one of the delusional anons in the animegao/kigu thread who are absolutely convinced that this shit is common in every lolita meet in Japan, lmao

I don't have that GLB but I'd say it's altered. A ~54 cm waist would be a JP size 5 and MmM size 2 is equivalent to JP size 9. Some older skirts have a 62 cm waist, a JP size 7, but 54 is drastically different from everything else they have released both prior and after, it would probably be unsellable to their demography as well. That is just what I think though.
