It's that time of year again.
www animemidwest com
When: July 6-8
Where: Donald E Stephens Convention Center, Rosemont Illinois
Guests:
Aya Ikeda, Hiroaki Inoue, Takashi Otsuka, Terumi Nishii, NaSka,
and the group of English VAs Kopf has every year

Cosplans? Panels? Guests you're hoping to see?

Also a discord for midwestern cons: discord.gg/bYqRE3j

I would just like more anime/game related guests in general, be it western VAs or industry guests from Japan. I really hate that the guest lineup seems to be appealing to a general pop culture kinda crowd. Idk who in their right mind thought to make the two headlining guests youtube channels that are barely relevant anymore, but it sucks big time. (Also bringing back SPG for whatever goddamn reason)

>> No.9911006

Guestlist might not be as great as last year but still bretty good. Inoue, Ohtsuka, and Terumi Nishii should all be cool to see assuming they have panels on animation/design.

Also, Kopf did nothing wrong.

Ryan keeps falling short every year. How do you continually run a con that used to be good, into a downward spiral. Worked last year, never doing it again. No organization, treat staff and congoers like shit, and the raves have even lacked a lot of shit. When will we let Midwest die and start a better con

Lolita tea party was actually good last year. Shame that the hotel policy requires uneaten food to be thrown out because there were so many good sandwiches left over. I wish they had provided a menu beforehand and that we weren't short on time, but it was still lovely.

>>9910041
No, apparently they're taking a break from official Lolita programming. Idk if that's an excuse to do less work or they had trouble booking Lolita guests, or thought Lolita programming doesn't bring in bigger crowds.

Apparently someone submitted a Lolita party in the panels scheduling. No idea what that's about, but I can already see an awkward hour of a cosplay lolita trying to host a bunch of other itas and babbylitas, a group of well dressed out of towners being let down by lack of good Lolita programming, and morbidly curious locals trying to get out without appearing rude

I'm not going this year, but for everyone else's sake, I hope the local comm will attempt to put together something like that one year they couldn't get a Lolita guest

>> No.9911221

But they do?

idk if this is bait, but thing is, there are some lolitas in Kopf's con staff, and they have managed to bring lolita guests and vendors over the years, so that's why some folks are disappointed in how lackluster this year seems by comparison.

There are lolitas in the area who also cosplay, so they've generally decided to go to this con since ACen no longer does J-Fashion events.
And we've been getting Baby for some time
- hoping that they'll consider opening a shop here some day. Chicago's a pretty well off comm and so far away from the other U.S. boutiques, so I don't see how they wouldn't support brands here. Even last year everyone seemed to look forward to Lolita Collective, but they decided not to show up for some reason or other.

>> No.9911223

>>9911154

I don't get this logic. To see Misako last year, I had to pay $50 on top of a $30 pass. They were getting money from me. In addition, I spent the first few hours wandering AA and buying pins and art, and I saw quite a few other tea party goers do the same.

It's not like I paid ONLY for the tea and none of that money from the pass was going to the con organizers. If the pass doesn't cover overhead for being at the con, then what the hell are they doing with the money.

>> No.9911237

what I'm saying is every kopf con I've gone to, lolitas have shut themselves in their own little corner and we've never seen anything from them. I never see them in the panels or Artist alley. Even the meetups for the chicago area cons, you never see a lolita. It honestly seems like they stay to only lolita events and only go to cons for it, like the people who show up to lock themselves in the game room every year only they like to look down at cosplayers.
Also, we had a period of time with CAD this year where it was the exact opposite and we were asking where the anime content and guests were at an anime con because they were just announcing lolita brands and deadlift lolita as guests, but pretty bare on new VA guests.

Fact is they can't cater to the 250 lolitas that want to sit in a tea party and have a bunch if guests or they get salty. They'd rather put money into something the 15k anime fans there would rather have.

I was a maid in cafe at both cad and MidWest and I worked 1 MN Café with Caleb’s wife. He can be a huge dick at times but he always had the cafes back when we’d get tons of creeps and stalkers that Kopf never did anything about. Like I’m talking if no one had the balls to kick them out, he’d just do it himself. From what one of the other maids said was he quit because he wanted stricter underage drinking rules+have it apply to staff. Also wanted to not have the con run it’s own parties for legal reasons. Ryan wasn’t hearing it. They clashed at the shitty smaller con they do somewhere in Iowa. Ryan was still mad ended up saying something fucked up to his wife and a volunteer. Caleb got in his face. After the con I guess Ryan tried to suspend him for 1 con and he told him to go fuck himself and quit.

I asked her about this like a month ago in a group chat a few maids are in. I guess for the sake of their friends still volunteering they kept quiet about it.

Sucks cause his wife made bomb ass cupcakes.

Ps/Kopf creeps everyone in the cafe out myself included.

He had a decent team but he let his "fame" if you can call it that, get to his head and he has pretty much pushed out, fired, or aggravated his staff to the point of quitting and walking out. He underpays his staff and volunteers, sets up subpar panels, lies about ticket sales/attendee rates so it boosts actual sales, and brings in the same acts over and over again and expects everyone to praise him for running a half functioning con that literally panders to 13 year olds who get into their mommys liquor cabinet. He won't even watch after his own underage staff, I knew workers of his running around on acid and who knows what other drugs last year. Expect about 1/3 to 1/2 the size of ACEN and slightly looser focus on animation in general as opposed to strictly anime. Panels are a bit more informal and it doesn't have the same party scene either.

You may be underestimating or not even knowing about some of the costs of a lolita guest.

* They and all their staff each get their own hotel room. It's very Japanese that you don't share a room with co workers.

Exactly it's not just the appearance fee they have to pay, theres the cost of translators, rooms, travel, shipping merch, and everything. It adds up pretty quick and spending that much for a relatively small group that doesn't spend much money and doesn't interact with other guests very much means it can get hard for cons to justify it.

>> No.9912960

ActuallyRyan here. A staff member linked this to me. I haven't posted in this thread before, and I generally don't come to this place not since like... 5 years ago IDK.

Let's see ummm, I'm gonna stick to trying to provide info and answers and just avoid as much drama in what I'm writing as best I can. And then I'm probably going to nope out of this thread and not come back, apologies but that's probably just... for the best.

Thank you to the people saying good things, I appreciate it. We personally met those Japanese guests that we do have in Japan, so our trip this year was pretty succesful in that regard. We're still working on building up relationships; business in Japan takes a lot of time. You have to build trust with people and companies. A few companies have just come to the US without much relationship and often they have said that they wound up not getting paid or something was not handled well, so they are often cautious.

Regarding lolita stuff, the biggest issue is not only Anime Expo but also Japan Expo in Paris which is 300,000 people they say. I would not miss 300k people to come sell to 15k people in Chicago, so it makes sense. We plan to invite lolita guests sparingly now too though. The tea party has not always sold out right away, sometimes it took a while, and that is worrying about the level of interest. For refence, at the tea parties the hotel takes I believe $42 of that ticket. That may seem high for what they provide, which certainly could be more, and we've pushed them for more, but it's a hotel. You pay hotel prices. If you want to verify call them and say you want to host a lunch gathering, prices will be similar or much higher.

A lot of hotel pricing is due to labor - they have to pay the required number of servers that the union contract says, so like 1 person per 20 guests, and then that person must get a minimum of 4 hours of paid time at like $25 an hour. Then they have to pay for their overhead, pay all the chefs, et cetera.

>> No.9912963

The remaining like $8 goes towards the costs, and certainly doesn't cover it much; flights, hotel rooms, shipping merchandise, food for the guests (they're in Rosemont which is expensive already and we're certainly not taking them to McDonalds.) But we have a lolitas on staff and so even if we loose a little money we still plan to try to support lolitas when we can; it's okay to lose a little money if we're supporting Japanese culture, but we can't lose our shirts over it.

(A note, Deadlift Lolita I don't consider a lolita guest at all, they're a music guest.)

Some complaints here are so generic that I can't help but assume that person just works for another con. People wouldn't keep coming back if we weren't doing a lot right. We take feedback forms every year and we spend hours on them. After the con is when we have the most free time, and figuring out what to improve on is a big deal to me. I can't possibly tell you how we're going to fix the con if "the raves sucked". Well what sucked about them? We have more or equal speakers and subs compared to 99% of cons. Lights too. If you don't like the DJs' music, that's a real complaint that I could actually act on, but just that they "suck", that doesn't tell me anything and sounds like you're just being a jerk. Regarding DJs, what do you want? Because I'm not going to please everyone. Sometimes we've had requests for Anisong remix music and DJs focused on stuff like that. Then we've had other people tell us please god don't bring that kind of music. Can't make everyone happy.

Regarding Youtube guests; we're still sticking to our core of anime focus and free autographs, but each year we try to try one new big thing. I still want to keep people entertained even if all the anime-guests will be at Anime Expo. It's fine if you're not interested in them, but their show will be incredible and a lot of people will be really happy.

>> No.9912966

A convention is not only for YOU, it's for EVERYONE. That's why there are five to ten different things going on at the same time all weekend. But I too have noticed that we had a few fewer voice actors this year, and we're planning to change that for next year. 14 voice actors this year is not that many.

>I asked him why he won't bring jpop guest and his answer was "too expensive ".

Regarding this, you're really oversimplifying this answer, which I would have given you in length, X. A Jpop band from Japan consisting of 4 to 6 people will be a minimum of 6 to 8 flights, for about $10,000 in flights total if we book only nonstop and on reputable airlines. Then a hotel room for each of them so $3000 there. Then feeding them in Rosemont which is probably $100 a day per person so $3000 there. And that's $16,000 for a jpop band that doesn't charge an appearance fee and won't bring in many attendees - then add an appearance fee for a band that people will be excited for, and it gets much higher. To note, we have offered a few bands large appearance fees from Japan - but scheduling conflicts are common. You also can't offer to like 6 bands at once and hope one accepts and then cancel the others as that's very not Japanese business, because they may have spent hours on preparing to answer you with a Yes coordinating with other departments, staff, managers, et cetera.

That's why when we can get individual singers who have done anisongs, we absolutely say yes.

>> No.9912975

Regarding underage drinking, we absolutely do NOT allow it, even for staff. Heck, especially for staff. If you're not staff sneak into one of our staff meetings they're usually held in the open. One of the rules we have to remind people is not to drink while working and not to drink underage, and that we'll take them off staff forever if they do. This is probably where someone's going to come and say "Oh but I saw it", but in every case that I've found out about I've had that person fired. People can wait until they're 21 to drink. I did.

Regarding the person talking about ticket sales and lower the price for 12 year old weeaboos.... I've never "got my ass kicked" by a lolita, or in fact ever have I had my ass kicked, nor any of that other stuff. But you're not hurting my feelings, the crazier the stories you make about me the less anyone will believe that nonsense. The other possibility is that someone lied to YOU to make themselves seem cool or whatever, also possible. I don't even think you know what Anime Midwest is if you're saying we "lower the price" and need "real panelists" and "real game rooms". This year the game room is in the Exhibit Hall and will have 3 arcade gaming providers. We specially invite a few select panelists every year who have done great panels. A tip about panels: The lower the panel room number, typically the better the panel. Returning panelists, etc, will usually get the priority rooms. And it doesn't matter to me if a couple of panels are boring or only serve the people that attend - as long as they had fun running it and maybe some congoers had fun. You might not be into "Super Ouran Tea Talk" or whatever, but some people are, stop hating on others man just let them have a good con.

>> No.9912978

To whoever said I cursed them out for staring at me, well if that happened I'm sorry. Maybe I was having a bad day. Or I could have been joking, it doesn't always come across as obvious. If you really feel that way then come talk to me about it. I've never in my life fired someone for bringing up a problem to me. The people I like the most are those who can be honest even when we disagree.

So often people just really jump to assumptions or assume the worst thing and the whole community needs to stop doing that. (It's infected the whole world though; Twitter and Reddit are good examples.) Just, like, talk to people, if you feel something is shit actually talk to them in person. Don't do it screaming like "Why the fuck is this shit such shit" you're not going to get anywhere with that, but like "Hey this thing could be improved can we do something about it" is great even if the answer is no.

Like staff hotel rooms, those are incredibly expensive when it comes to the whole budget, and I know we're not below average when it comes to con staff hotel rooms. Some cons make people sleep in shifts of six people - meaning a total of 12 people in a room it's crazy. We don't have anywhere near that. Five or six would be the absolute maximum. If it's been more, then it's an oversight.

>> No.9912983

To anyone else with a problem, either talk to me about it or please save yourself the misery and quit, I won't be holding either against you. If you're doing staff work and not having fun, just stop man. This is supposed to be fun stuff. And I'm not saying that quitting is your only option, I mean it if you wanna talk. The contact at animecon.org email is usually stuff I read. Honestly though, why are you mad at me? There are department heads and division heads; they're supposed to know what's going on and tell you what you need to be doing. That's they're job, to be there for you. If they're not, heck, tell me about that too. Communicating is hard what if the time you had a bad time maybe someone was ill or having some kind of trouble? You're going to be salty about it forever? That's no way to live.

I hope some of that felt like I actually answered your questions. I do care about your opinions.

But now I'm going to nope out of this thread and not return, because it's just likely to get anons repeat-posting hate and people making multiple posts with more made up nonsense. I have other stuff to do, I don't need to be here all day. I think I'll take a bath, mow the lawn, play Civ 6, answer some emails, and after that work on your suggestions for improving next year's schedule.

Feel free to reach out at contact at animecon.org anytime.

Just figured I'd post this as a warning, but if any anons were wanting to go to autograph sessions of any JP guests, if they have a panel right before, don't attend it. Last year there were huge issues with Studio Trigger where they scheduled their autograph sessions about an hour after the panels, and anyone who went to the panels got to the autograph area to learn that the lines had already capped at 50 people. Even then, because they scheduled it close to when the convention center closed, not everyone in the line got through.

>>9931038
Yeah I feel you. I went to the LWA panel the first day and there was a whole group of us that got to the signings and were pissed about how they handled it. The next day I went to the industry panel long enough for the Inferno Cop news, and then booked it to the signing area. I plan to do the same thing with Terumi Nishii, since her Friday session is so late in the day.

And as someone who runs late night panels, I don't like being jammed in the same slot as every other late night panel, both because we steal each others' audiences and because I want to check them out before or after I finish with mine.

Fucking "out by 12:30" bullshit.

That's alright! Thanks for sharing. These are pretty cool. Really a step up from last year.

I said 5 AM. People are getting out of the rave or still looking for things to do at 2 AM. There really isn't much else to do late night at a con. Most people are usually asleep around 5 AM.

As far as people being rude, the entire rhythm game community isn't like that. It's understandable to be a little impatient in a line at a con. Some people are just a little more vocal about things than others. As far as people hogging the game they are either being assholes or they don't know that you have intention to play. It can be a bit difficult to keep track of lines at cons if people aren't lined up directly behind the game.

My biggest thing is that why would so many people who are completely unrelated come through and say the same stuff? Like I ran a rape victim advocacy group for a long time and was a victim myself and it personally took me years to come forward about it. Like I understand people want to enjoy their con but it's kind of gross and irresponsible to not talk about this behavior from a con that a lot of kids go to. And the fact that there are multiple stories with girls ages from 14-16 should be enough to be like "hey maybe we can enjoy this con but we need to make changes to how it's being operated". It's not hard honestly. I know many cosplayers and lolitas alike who hate R and know the stuff he's done. He behavior itself is typical of someone who is guilty so why does OP need to be so defensive against and delete any comments made against him unless they're friends????

At least that's how it comes off to me, and I've seen more than three or four people come through and try to discuss this who are being silenced. No wonder no one wants to actually file police reports, y'all think he's an innocent child or some shit. These poor kids I feel really bad for them

>there are some lolitas in Kopf's con staff, and they have managed to bring lolita guests and vendors over the years
they are better off organising a big lolita tea-party that's unrelated to the con. tons of lolitas hate cons.

Absolutely this. and the fact that he personally shows up in these threads and has the balls to talk about his conventions and NEVER address the allegations.
