We haven't had one of these in a while but we're practically overrun with unpopular opinion threads so here goes

I didn't get a proper blouse until 7-8 or so years into being a lolita because I'd just do OPs, jsk+cardigan like pic related, or cutsew+skirt for casual. It's only been in the past 5 years or so that I've found blouses that I like enough to buy and coordinate with JSKs, but I still heavily internalize that "dress over shirt = bad" and think it looks dumb 75% of the time, especially if the blouse doesn't "blend" with the JSK to look like it's one piece instead of two.

If the blouse and JSK don't look like they belong together then it's probably just bad coordination. Not all blouses work with all JSKs, after all.

Sort of adding onto your confession: I've been into lolita for nearly a decade and I only recently got some good, proper petticoats. I did own and wear petticoats before that, but the ones I've used before were terrible and cheap. Oops.

no it's more personal taste, like my lolita sensibilities tell me that pic related is a solid old school coord, but my personal taste is horrified by the look of "dress over top"

i can tell the difference between when a coord is "correct" or well-done but *i* just don't like it, and when a coord is outright poor

I have a blouse that fits me perfectly in the arms and waist, but which has big gaps between the buttons in the bust area when I wear it. Like you I'm probably cgl's textbook ita because I don't match every shade of every colour like a cartoon character, nor do I care about matching themes. Thing is that outside of lolita, literally no one cares if you wear solid tights or your shoes don't match your skirt etc. Even people who wear other alt fashions only care that you look coordinated overall. I feel like those guidelines were made for people who can't dress themselves (even outside of the fashion) to save their lives.

I also tend to prefer longer skirt lengths than the most popular knee length silhouettes, so it's not like my coords particularly read as attempted lolita anyway. More than often it's just a black dress with a few frills and the occasional border print.

Look, if you don't like lolita that's perfectly fine and I'm not trying to convince you otherwise, but if this is based on your view that lolita = OTT and perfect at all times, and you think that cgl's opinion, the place full of anonymous posters whom you can't even be sure are lolitas at all, is the end all be all, I'm sorry but you're delusional.
It's entirely possible to wear super simple coords and still be perfectly lolita. >OTT, everything-has-to-match-100%-or-you're-ita meme

i think most people are aware that's an online problem, not an irl problem. but a lot of the time, the look i prefer simply does not fall under the lolita umbrella, whether due to shape, simplicity, or something else.

that said, sometimes i can still call those casual outfits lolita--pic related is a formula I use pretty often: cute but normie hair, OP, sandals. this picture i would call lolita, but not every OP has this shape or versatility to be worn so simply. and that's fine! "not lolita" doesn't mean "ita," it just means "not lolita."

No, cgl ruined them after spreading these websites in the first place. I still remember when barely anyone knew about fril and mercari and the ones who knew about them were either too lazy to search for a proper SS who'd be willing to buy on there or to lazy to learn how to navigate their websites. Then the spoonfeeders ran their course and more people talked about it which resulted in more people asking the same damn questions without any research in an endless circle. Same goes for Wunderwelt when they still were so cheap people thought it was a scam. Yes, I'm still salty about it, that's my confession.

>> No.9936560

They do mention that "full coords are too much" though. What's "too much" about wearing a simple OP with some nice accessories, socks, shoes and a modest petticoat? It's not too much at all and actually not very different in intricacy from other girly styles; unless their concept of lolita is focused on OTT all perfectly matching everything which is, again, not what the fashion is about.

i'll just say this and then i'll stop responding because you seem hellbent on nitpicking people's words and being obnoxiously literal

i have lots of lolita pieces. rarely do i put them together with an idea of assembling a lolita coordinate. if i put together an outfit and i'm able to call the end result lolita, cool. if i'm not, cool. what i mean is that the intent when getting dressed most days is not "i'm going to put together a lolita coordinate today!" like it is at meetups, even though at meetups i still tend to keep it pretty simple and lowkey. rarely do i wear socks, though i wear tights in the winter. rarely do i wear lolita shoes or "lolita accessories" like wristcuffs or headbows. i don't always wear a petticoat, and if i do it's not always a cupcake shape, i also use A-line retro-shape ones (and you'd be surprised how much a retro shape can change the vibe of some pieces)

a lot of my outfits can be called lolita, sure. a lot of them can't. a lot of them would probably be like some of fannyrosie's coords, where people are like "is this lolita or is this retrovintage or is this otome or is this just a pretty outfit that happens to incorporate a jane marple skirt?"

it's not about "perfectly matching" or OTT or anything like that. i don't post photos online so i don't get up in arms about how to tag things or whether my outfits are appropriate for CoF or not. i just put clothes together that look good together and don't care how "lolita" the end result is.

I'm the other anon they replied to, you summed it up perfectly.

Generally speaking, simple things like the petticoat, headwear, wristcuffs are the things that cross the line between lolita fashion and just wearing a dress. I don't want to wear those things on a daily basis, and I'm perfectly happy to fit into the 'just a dress' category. Like you, if I want to intentionally wear a lolita coordinate, I will.

It also has nothing to do with OTT. I just want to wear my wardrobe in a more casual, versatile way. I guess if I had to put a label on it related to lolita, it would be 'A la mode', but I don't think that term ever really took off. By 'not perfectly matched' I was referring to stuff like wearing neutral coloured shoes, bags and so on, rather than having the exact colour of shoes, thematic accessories, and novelty bag to match my main piece which is a big part of coordinating in lolita.

I'm glad that AP spammed the holy lantern re-releases and oversaturated the market with it.

I can't stand scalpers and people who only wear dresses that are expensive because they somehow think expensive = better than others.

Everyone who truly loved and wanted that dress got to buy it, and got to support the brand directly instead of some scalping re-seller. Anyone who paid $400 for it learned a lesson that lolita is not an investment, it's clothes, and that maybe you should buy dresses you actually love and want to wear, instead of getting them for status and re-selling them.

I'm an oldfag. While *obtaining* lolita pieces is significantly easier, especially for a good price, than it was ten years ago, I think that finding your place in lolita, learning the rules, and being able to participate in discussion and make mistakes is probably more difficult.

When we were all on egl it was a central hub and a community. We had tons of "guides" and "what is lolita" and would parrot things like "check the sidebar" and "check the memories." These days there is no such community and there aren't really those same resources anymore. Also, since there aren't really discussion forums now, it's all through social media, everything that you do is attached to your name and your face.

There was always getoffegl, and /cgl/ has been around for like 12 years or something now, but it still seems like there was so much more space for newbies to figure things out and learn from global discussion and reliable sources.

Why do we as a community even pay attention to her? Her stuff doesn't look remotely lolita. I wish there were another fashion name for the kind of OTT pseudo-historical things she, goatspell, and indrolita make. It's not lolita but it is a genuinely western style with a unifying aesthetic that's nothing like what's trendy in Japanese brands. It deserves recognition as its own thing, adjacent to lolita but not under the same label.

Tbh you don’t sound like you actually used lj much. There were 30 other lj comms available and then your area may also have its own lj comm, so the idea that lj was more together is false. There was even stuff like a place for moms, brand focused, drug users, etc. Egl promoted making your own lj comm because they didn’t want to deal with different groups. Rc serves the same purpose as the main egl lj in function and is only worse because it has more normies from fb. Guides were just old links to sites or posts, most of them outdated because it’s lj so if the person abandoned it, you couldn’t keep up resources without reposting it yourself and gaining traction. We were lucky that some members were dedicated in this but it’s the same idea as who keeps lolibrary running and really Lolita tips on tumblr is better than any newbie guide on lj even if the person behind it is that great themselves.

Research the different styles of j-fash, you may not like decora (I don't like it at all) but it's quite distinct from OTT sweet. It's like the difference between himekaji and lolita, newfags try to call himekaji type looks "casual lolita," but any lolita can easily spot the difference. Not an angry anon -- and this isn't the right thread to make a dump anyway. I just find it ironic that the difference is exactly that -- "random cute things clinging from hair/wig".

If you really want to see the difference, simply track down AP ads, probably prints from 2008-2013 would give you OTT pastel sweet. Another clue is to track down the full sets, or girls who are wearing the matching sets and nothing else -- you'll see they're woefully short on "cute things clinging to hair"

Third clue is to look at outfit rundowns. When you get to the cute crap on their head it will often take a drastic break and literally becomes crap, ie-- "plastic toys" or "DIY" or "Claire's children section" -- sometimes it won't even be something that was meant to be worn at all.

OTT pastel sweet was mainly OTT because it's so darn pastel -- everything is like a soft pink or a fluffy lavender or a baby blue from head to toe, topped with a large oversized headbow, and then the dress itself is usually some cutesy print. Remember that it came out in 2006-2008, put it next to old school sweet, you can see the drastic difference, that's why it's OTT. It looks pretty tame today because we're so used to it now.

As I said before, I find almost every sweet coord very stupid, so yeah it's hard to fully comprehend the aesthetics of something one finds ugly - but I'd gladly study the sweet substyles if any texts are suggested.

I wonder if being colorblind has anything to do with me disliking sweet lolita in general... Most pastel colors look messy to me, the colorful prints are especially terrible to recognize.

These are not very good excuses... It just sounds like you don't know anything about lolita at all. honestly anon, please just look at lolita more. there are many classic coords in pastel colors, and many sweet coords in jewel tones, and sweet-classic coords that could go either way for substyles. Don't ignore coords and pay attention to what does and doesn't get attention- that's usually a good indicator.

Sweet is still sweet. OTT simply stands for Over The Top, what the young ones nowadays call being "extra".

It's the same candy pastel dresses, but when you start adding "extra extra" things like candy pastel wigs and huge bunny ears or some other eye-catching stuff, then it becomes OTT. OTT simply means a coord is "extra extra". Does that make sense?

Here's the same Cherry Berrry Bunny, normal sweet coord. Nothing a lot different except she's using her own hair, so it looks a lot less extra than the models wearing wigs styled as giant bunny ears.

LJ's static blog format was much better for writing long paragraphs and laying things out in tables and stuff, though. So it was much better suited to host guides on. Even when guides were abandoned they don't get deleted and can be found again fairly easily even if folks forgot to save it to memories or link it in the sidebar. Meanwhile if you write up any kind of FAQ on a microblogging platform like Facebook, you had better save the link ASAP because FB's search function is seriously pants on head retarded.

FB as a platform has its own drawbacks anyway. That algorithm doesn't always work to show you want you want to see, sometimes it shows you a post because a handful of your FB friends are having a convo in the middle of it and it thinks you absolutely must feel a soul-crushing need to read and join in this convo. Meanwhile a bunch of other posts probably got hidden from you because FB's AI thinks you're not interested. At least with LJ it showed you every single thing and you got exposed to every viewpoint from every other lolita, even if it was one you didn't want to see or didn't agree with. Not to mention FB chucking out chronological order fucked up the usefulness of lolitaupdates entirely. You'd really only like FB because it only shows you the echo chamber FB's AI thinks you want to see, instead of actual everything that's going on.

Thank you, anons. My confusion was mostly about whether sweet coords nowadays are usually OTT (like the one posted by >>9939053, once considered OTT, but now is pretty commonplace) or if the meaning of OTT now addresses exclusively to super extravagant coords with wigs and stuff clinging from hair (like the ones on >>9938985 and >>9938995).

>>9939053
>OTT pastel sweet was mainly OTT because it's so darn pastel
>It looks pretty tame today because we're so used to it now.

These made me curious if there were some other OTT specific substyles, being >>9939053 the regular OTT coord and the more extravagant ones being labed something else. Basically a nomenclature issue.

>>9939293
Oh I expressed myself badly, I love pastel classic coords (with beige/white/brown/grey as main colors), my problem is just "colorful pastel" tones. Like, I can't tell if one is wearing lilac and pink/green and sax or if it's a monochromatic coord with a greyish print as I see it. Coordination of different pastel colors looks messy to me, while old school sweet with solid dresses and white shirts look pretty cute. Bittersweet is especially weird, since I know the prints are 100% pastel colors, but all I see is white and grey over a black background (lol).

Well, thank you all for your time. My heart is relieved after confessing this secret. I'll get my sweet lolita homework done by myself, since no specific blogs were mentioned (I'd rather read articles than just scroll over random pics, but this is fine as well).

I think hijab and especially long pants in lolita look pretty bad, but I can’t help but be happy for them that they’re allowed to wear lolita with their hijab at all. There are a lot of Muslim families on my street and the little girls like to follow me around and look at my dresses. A few of them once told me that they would like to dress like me when they are older but can’t, because it’s haram and they would be expected to wear full body hijab instead. Most of the women in this area wear not just the headscarf but also long baggy dresses that cover their arms and legs, almost like a burqa but with their full face showing.
Kind of a confession, because I know that if I told anyone in my comm about this I would probably end up on BtB for “Islamophobia”. They’re kind of SJW and insist that all women who wear hijab in our country do so 100% for themselves and are never ever pressured into it, and anyone who thinks they are is just concern trolling.

Another reason I disliked hijab lolitas is that the Islam religion is really bad imo. Its ideology suppresses people, especially women. I didn’t think those who wear lolita with a hijab can see that in their religion.
However, your reply has granted me another aspect of this issue. I wonder why I didn’t look from their point of view earlier. You’re totally correct, it is already luxurious for them to be allowed to dress up in lolita, so probably I should view them more open mindedly.

Do gulls say this? I've seen them say that the fashion isn't for you if you care what people think about you, not that you're "not a true lolita"; and I can kind of see why that is, assuming the person in question is burdened by the stress of caring about outsiders' opinions of them. Why would you willingly involve yourself in something that doesn't make you happy?
Having said that, if you wear the fashion, love wearing it AND struggle with anxiety and feeling self conscious, while continuing to wear it despite the struggle, you're completely valid. I'd say you should be celebrated and encouraged far more than girls who wear lolita in "safe" spaces like meetups or cons, because they're too scared to wear it otherwise.

generally the sentiment is "if you're overly concerned/anxious about the opinions of others and don't want to stand out, maybe an outlandish fashion isn't right for you".

Although newb lolitas who get the majority of their information off /cgl/ may have a skewed view on things. with all the bait posts about lolita being ageplay or fetish-y, and the occasional lolita horror story thread, you often see posts where someone thinks the second they walk down the street in a coord they're going to be assaulted, verbally or otherwise. and that's just not true. most people won't give a fuck and the sooner people realise that, the sooner they'll feel the freedom of being able to wear what you like.

Even if they think poorly of me I'm not going to stop wearing lolita; it's just that I'm scared of them thinking poorly of me. >>9940918

I actually find lolita helps with my anxiety. When im wearing normie clothes and i catch someone staring at me, it freaks me out because I know they're looking at me. In lolita, when people stare, it's the clothes they are looking at. Having people talk to me in public is way less scary when im in clothes like lolita because it's like they aren't even talking to me.

Lolita can be scary in public though, there are some people who genuinely seem to get mad at me for my clothes, and when theres some old guy just staring, and not even looking away when i look...those things are frightening. I swear if you even dress somewhat different in my city, people judge you. I wore a light blue candy stripper dress and this man on the train just stared at me for like 10 minutes until i got off, and a couple kept looking at me and whispering to one another. Normies suck.

it's important to remind yourself that people judge you always, no matter what you do. Just like how you judge people, it's impossible not to. Getting judged based on clothes or pissing off normies is just... its honestly kinda funny. Plus it makes for great stories . You do you, provoke society, and remember if you feel anxious you can always stop wearing an outfit and go home and change.

Consider this: Not washing your dresses makes them build up bacteria, filth and odor, even if at first it's not noticeable. At some point it does become obvious and it's unhealthy and gross.
I'm convinced that one of the girls in my comm doesn't wash her brand because some of her garments have the same stains they did years ago, as if she never even tried removing them. She's a lovely girl but that shit isn't cute.

There is a difference between washing it every 2-4 wears and anon being scared to wash shit, and others not washing their stuff at all. I'm the anon you're talking about. I should have been more specific and I see how my post may have come across. Blouses, socks, petticoats, etc. All get washed. Solids and cotton items I've also washed with no problem. I know my fancier dresses need to be washed at some point but I'm just afraid of damaging them. I'm not against washing, I just don't want to fuck up and I don't trust dry cleaning. Should I be very gentle and handwash and see how that goes?

>> No.9948022

There are extensive guides on the topic you can find by googling. A super quick rundown: check the tags, you can find guides to translate them. They will tell you if you can't dry clean. Spot wash part of the fabric to see if it bleeds, if it doesn't run cold wash gentle cycle. Air dry flat. You can also search for other lolitas that own your dress and ask them how they've cleaned it.

I agree. From a purely materialistic point of view they are ugly as fuck. But also their reasoning most likely makes no sense. Muslim women are supposed to dress modestly, so that both means not to show off, literally and figurally. Meaning don't show bare skin except the face and hands, but also don't be too flashy. Actually alot of muslim women go bad there, wearing makeup is vanity so...

point being; wearing flashy fashion is contradictory to their religion.

I respect all hes done for the fashion, and I think he's a really good face for the brand, but I swear theres tons of ppl who wear moitie that just wear it as glorified mana merch. It was especially bad years ago. I felt like most ppl didnt give a shit about the clothes or anything else related, they just wanted moitie because it was mana's brand. depends on the item and the context. i live in the american south, so if i go out in the summer for even a few minutes, anything that gets worn will have sweat and sunscreen on it, which i will want to wash. flu season, everything gets washed. t-shirts i will wash after a single wear regardless of time of year, because even if i don't sweat, they've had full contact with my body all day. skirts i will wear a handful of times before washing since they touch very little of my skin. same with hoodies and jackets. etc.

My efame friend literally gets her rent paid by ad revenue just because she posts dumb shit. She lives with her boyfriend, and because she covers the rent he pretty much let's her have free reign of his (way higher) salary. You guys make me think of the expression "wear the clothes - don't let the clothes wear you", in other words, stop trying to look at yourself through other people's eyes or drawing your self-worth from other people's feedback (likes, comments, etc.). There will always be someone prettier, richer, more famous, etc. that doesn't mean that you aren't likeable or worthy because you're not like them. Wear the fashion because you love it and it makes you happy and screw everyone else. If you think your coords look worse on you, either find your style / learn to corrdinate for your body type / height / etc., or work on those self-esteem issues. It's just clothes, clothes are meant to be worn.
