I'm probably in a small minority but I don't really give a shit if they Photoshop their professional photoshoot pics or not. I can appreciate fanart for the same aesthetic reasons. I'd rather see shots of my favorites characters that look good; they don't have to be a perfect representation of the cosplayers actual looks.

I only have a problem with the ones that are like IT'S NOT PHOTOSHOP and ALL THE HATURZ ARE JUST JEALOUS. But from what I understand, it's pretty accepted in Asia that most online models and cosplayers Photoshop themselves hard, so whatever.

I knew about the ridiculous levels of shooping but the funny thing I never specifically caught before was look at all their chins- all of them. They've all shaved their chins down to points, some of them to freakish impossible levels. It's kinda funny to see it all in one thread together.

I'll take the bait. I think that the point of contention is not that cosplayers photoshop but rather the extent to which a cosplayer digitally alters their images. Most would agree that photoshopping images in post production is essential to delivering a polished finished product (because even with the best shooting conditions a shot will not be flawless). Speaking for myself, I don't really care all that much if a cosplayer retouches their images (ex: colour correction, cropping, improving skin texture and tone via frequency separation, deleting distracting items in the background, adding special effects), even a few nips and tucks here and there are okay in my opinion (other anons in this thread have already acknowledged that it is all part an parcel of a professional shoot).

Where I tend to draw the line is when a subject is altered so much that you cannot even recognize them or if the result crashes straight into the uncanny valley. It's also shitty to digitally "correct" your costume to better match the source material and then receive heaps of praise for for accuracy and your "mad craftsmanship skills". As a rule, we should strive to have our cosplay looking as good as possible for a photoshoot (well applied makeup, neatly styles wig, accurate costume) so as to minimize the amount of editing required in post production.

Good photoshop is like good plastic surgery: the alterations made are enough to enhance the overall aesthetic quality but the end result is not so far removed from the original that if the two versions were to be placed side by side onlookers would go "wtf?".
