I agree it's important to focus on the topic at hand, but presentation is about the whole picture. Wearing an outfit crafted to the nines but having shitty make up would still make it a bad cosplay. This on the other hand is bad all around. There are big women who know how to work their bodies, without hiding their weight, to the camera's best angle. This isn't it chief.

It's bad because you can tell that they didn't do anything to alter their wigs or costumes out of the package. Those are the cheap store bought costumes you can get on aliexpress - Serenity and Small Lady excluded. Mercury's shoes are crumpling like a soda can.

No, these atrocities look like they were made using the Simplicity pattern. I HATE how it has the top as a type of bolero that goes over the dress. I’ve never seen anyone make that pattern look good. I follow the serenity because she does make some great cosplays, but I was cringing at how some of the other senshi look. Plus sized cosplayers need to know that you have to choose your patterns and materials carefully and make adjustments.

People do it as a "bolero" over the dress because they canonically have a seam under the bust, which could also be interpreted as the top being a separate piece. The live action show also did this method, which lends it some credibility.
Not saying the Simplicity pattern is good, but there is a reason for that construction.

I'm planning to do this. As far as I can tell, I will be the first to attempt it. What really sucks though is figuring out the material to make the suit out of. Thin foam could work for the skirt, but it'll have to be covered in green drab then stitched for the waist. There's so much to plan that I feel like i'm really in over my head.

The worst is when they think it is deserving of praise because it is big. Bad wig, wires showing, creasing foam from weight, adding LEDs to distract from crappy craftsmanship when they just make it worse.

I've never seen an UmbranWitch wig that isn't an over-teased, frizzy disaster. She's learned how to create huge volume but doesn't take the time to smooth back out the wig so that it looks like hair again. Look at the frizz on both of these. Plus she's got a terrible attitude about wigwork and accuses people of "copying" her awful style if they have teased wigs.

I’m gonna disagree with this here. I find that fat cosplayers make the same shit as skinny cosplayers. The problem is that they start at a disadvantage because they have to learn to fit things to their body. Skinny cosplayers making mediocre cosplays get praised to all heaven, whereas fat cosplayers get posted to this thread just because they are fat. And yes I am super salty because yes I am a fat cosplayer. But I am also a masters division award winning cosplayer. Sometimes you just need to swallow your pride and admit something looks bad.
After seeing photos of myself in my first cosplay I was like “wow that looks terrible” and vowed to never put myself through that again. The second cosplay I made looked terrible too so I scrapped all but one part. That was almost 6 years ago and I finally decided to remake that cosplay after finding the one part I kept. The problem is that new cosplayers overestimate their entry level abilities and pick designs that are way too complicated. I’m glad I could admit to myself that something looked bad at the time, so that I can try to make again years later with much more knowledge/skill so I don’t fucking embarrass myself in public
