Hi everyone,

It's already 9/20 and so far no /cgl/ santa thread. Is any gull out there interested in spreading the salt again this year? Personally I have no experience in these things, but if someone wants to be Santa, I'd gladly become a helper. Just seeing how much interest this drums up.

I was just about to make a thread, so good timing!

I have talked with 2018 Santa and she says she is down to help this year as well. If there are no further requests or anyone opposed to this, we will begin setting up and preparing the documents and forms.

I was actually pretty shocked seeing how many USA participants picked domestic only last time, I think receiving gifts from around the world is really neat. I've had Euro and Oceania gulls send some cool foods or locally made goods that really made it feel special.

I get that international shipping costs a tonne and there's some intricacies of customs and tax, etc. but I'd really encourage other American gulls to be open to international matches. If you pick multiple gifts/tiers you'll likely get someone from your own country anyway.

As for needing to post the gift to be on the White List this year, I’m personally fine with it, but I remember last year there was a bit of bitching about White List. If mostly everyone agrees, I would write it in this year’s rules.

A total of 70 cards and 81 gifts were sent. (There were 2 more gifts sent than originally signed up for due to people changing choices or changing to accommodate country requests.)

One interesting thing about the handmade vs artist alley categories, even though the numbers are the exact same, it wasn't the same people who said 'No', 'Yes', etc.

Angelic Pretty was the most popular brand, followed by Innocent World and BTSSB. The most popular anime was My Hero Academia, followed by Love Live.

If I had to guess given current trends, I’d suspect Moi Meme Moitie and general gothic will be more popular this year.

Yay! I'm so glad this is back, I love this - I have some saved photos of last year's gifts and art also that I can compile this week.

I have a general question for gulls - my main jfash interest is gyaru. I used to be into cosplay and dipped my toes into lolita but now it's just gyaru and general kawaii. I have participated for the last 4 years maybe? and I feel like each year the organisers have a little difficulty to match me. I lurk and I do my research, I've never had any complaints about my gifts and I've adored all of my gifts I've received, but I wonder if it'd be better to sit out so everyone gets a match into their own style?

Agreed, though it still depends on how much effort people put into filling in the forms. I'm pretty sure some people were commenting last year that their match hadn't been really informative or put in some broad interests. There were a lot of people asking for clarification etc or more info, I think more than other years.

Please people, try to not to be too vague or broad with what you'd like to receive! Take your time in filling out the form in its entirety. This both for things you would really like and things you hate, with everything in between. Example links or descriptions are never too many!

Though sometimes even filling in the form properly doesn't help and you get paired with a crossboarder who sends you 20 bows and some cash cause 'I thought lolitas liked bows??'

Suggestion maybe to not allow crossboarders unless they've already entered/are on the white list? Just to make sure they do in fact know what lolita fashion/cosplay is...

You’re right, the girl’s form did include a variety of interests, including stuff that normies could easy shop for (I believe she liked Transformers, so that could’ve been one idea to go from). Ultimately they were matched because of within- region shipping requests, and they had both mentioned cosplay and some of the same characters. We didn’t really have any reason to think anything would go wrong, as we’ve previously had men who are into cosplay join the exchange and give a good gift.

We have talked about implementing various kinds of vetting, but this board has such a wide range of styles and many foreign visitors. Additionally, a crossboarder could easily lie or make something up when asked about their personal style or what they cosplay, etc. Previous year’s (2017?) matching used a program that not only paired people based on keywords, but also on the length of their application (people who wrote more about themselves got matched with someone who did the same, people who wrote barely anything got matched together).

As >>10263166 points out, these are rare instances. Yeah it sucks when it happens, but I am confident that most people go into it with good intentions. Last year, Santa and I read through applications and saw a few ‘red flags’, and did our best to mitigate any potential disasters while still allowing the people to participate. This is one of the reasons why we will be matching by hand, and not using a program like Elfster, just to answer >>10263185. Of course feel free to send any feedback or suggestions for improvement in matches. Not everyone is going to have a perfect match, but we will try our best!
One of my favourite matches were the two anons who both loved Yu-Gi-Oh, and one of the gifts was entirely themed around a Kaiba Corp welcome box. It was very wholesome!

Not entirely sure when the form will go up, but hopefully within a week or less!

In the form last year you could choose if you wanted to send to a domestic or international option. I personally chose domestic because funds weren't the greatest but I could still spend enough for my match. The one who sent to me though was from New Zealand.

Yeah, agree with this. I'm gonna assume few if any other people from my country will sign up, so picking domestic isn't gonna work. A EU option for EU gulls is also nice to avoid having to pay customs on what you receive. Officially, gifts are exempt but you never know with the government.

List every little thing you like or dislike, it can't be too long. Write a goddamn novel. And don't sign up if you can't check the thread at least once a week for questions from your Santa.

Only brand I think means you cannot ask to receive literally only brand items, so if you specify other interests than lolita and say what you've said above that should be fine. It's generally because as much as the organisers try to match lolitas with other lolitas there might be the odd cosplayer to lolita match and they need to have a fair chance, as well as brand not being realistic for every tier. I'd probably say as well whether you mind getting non-lolita items bought from taobao or just taobao lolita brands.

Imo links are good for inspiration and to show your match your taste in things. As long as your form is clear and detailed enough on that aspect it doesn't need 20 links

41 Sign Ups so far! And we still have 1 week to go - so the event is already bigger this year which is great!

There were a few issues with the form not noting down peoples gift choices for the first few sign ups, so Santa or one of the Helpers will send out mail to those whose forms were effected!

Good news for EU gulls, there are many more people from the EU this years, so things will be easier and obviously cheaper all round! We will still do matching mostly by mutual interests, but it makes it much better for us and those who have selected EU only!

I would like feedback from others. I emailed my match last year about more info on stuff thet wanted in the 40$ tier. I got them 70$ worth of stuff. And I got them exactly what they asked for, sweet smelling perfume that smells like strawberries, sweet candies, makeup stencils, like Beth stencils, urban decay eyeshadow, a makeup bag, a cupcake necklace that was really cute and 18$ in itself, a bunch of vanilla and sweet themed bath soaps and salts, and I'm being told I grinched them because they didn't like their gift even tho I got them exactly what they told me in said email they wanted. I showed the email as well. How is that fair that I'm being disqualified for that? It's not like the bow incident last year, I literally got them what they told me thet wanted. Admins how is this fair? I'm sorry they didn't like the stuff but I got them exactly what they asked for.

I was sent multiple emails from your giftee showing you were asking her for a gift in return. I understand that this may be because you thought it was 1 to 1 matching, however this was explained multiple times in the threads that it was all matched by hand, as well as us telling you directly she was not your match.

While lolita branded stuff may not have been within budget, you can easily find cute and related fashion items which are within the budget on etsy, taobao, aliexpress or even lacemarket itself. You note you gave her ABH and UD items, but we did not see anything like that in the photos we were originally sent. If they were sent, then I of course apologise, but we have not seen them.

We also noted a few of the items were subscription box items and that made the gift feel quite thrown together and irrelevant to what was in the original form.

I did not wish there to be this kinda drama this year, but if you would like us to drop the picture of what we were sent so it can be discussed by other participants then let us know.

It is not just about how much money you spend, but how the money is used.
A previous participant blew double his budget on bows which could have been bought on AliExpress for 1/10000th of the price. Just because you spend your budget on overpriced goods, doesnt necessarily mean it is a good gift.

I’m not actually talking about the girl above. I just got irritated by topics which occurred within the conversation. 57 participants this year! Again, we have gone with IDs for this year (which were done by hand not by the autofill on Sheets, so hopefully no repeats of last years incident)

Not really. A lot of guys unload a lot of dumb shit onto you, like my last one did. We do the normal sheet fill, and then you buy accordingly. I have pierced ears, just the standard lobe piercing at the moment. Preference is hot chocolate because I only drink iced coffee (I'm a heathen).

As for the maid cafes, I'm not a big fan of the overly kawaii acting/accents and some of the more cutesy routines but I love maid cafe aesthetics (like the cute food!) and I love maid fashion.
