Hi everyone,

It's already 9/20 and so far no /cgl/ santa thread. Is any gull out there interested in spreading the salt again this year? Personally I have no experience in these things, but if someone wants to be Santa, I'd gladly become a helper. Just seeing how much interest this drums up.

Thanks, everyone.

I was just about to make a thread, so good timing!

I have talked with 2018 Santa and she says she is down to help this year as well. If there are no further requests or anyone opposed to this, we will begin setting up and preparing the documents and forms.

If anyone else I’m interested in helping, feel free to contact me at the old email HelperGull2018@yahoo.com

I’ll also be posting last year’s statistics and some pictures later tonight!

Is it possible to both help and participate? Also this year, would it be possible to have a clause that if you want to be on next year’s white list, then you have to post the gift you’ve received in the threads (except if you get grinched).

>> No.10261980

>>10261947
I was actually pretty shocked seeing how many USA participants picked domestic only last time, I think receiving gifts from around the world is really neat. I've had Euro and Oceania gulls send some cool foods or locally made goods that really made it feel special.

I get that international shipping costs a tonne and there's some intricacies of customs and tax, etc. but I'd really encourage other American gulls to be open to international matches. If you pick multiple gifts/tiers you'll likely get someone from your own country anyway.

Yes, it’s is definitely possible to both help and participate. I think having previously participated in last year’s exchange as well as being on the White List would be preferable, but email me and we can work something out!
As for needing to post the gift to be on the White List this year, I’m personally fine with it, but I remember last year there was a bit of bitching about White List. If mostly everyone agrees, I would write it in this year’s rules.

>>10261726
Participants can provide LM or other site feedback as >>10261947 mentioned, as well as a few other things. If a participant is on the White List, they can request to only be matched with another participant on the White List. Additionally, we have the Grinch Squad, which consists of volunteers who will send a gift to any gull who does not receive one from their designated Santa.

>>10261761
>>10261969 got it pretty much spot on. You can request to be matched with someone from your own country, but we can’t guarantee anything. Historically, the most popular places after USA were the UK, Canada, and Australia.
Personally, I think having an international partner is part of the fun, but I can understand that some people may not have the budget for the international shipping. I also encourage more American gulls to try an international gift!

A word cloud showing the popularity of certain tags. These were taken from information given in the form and what people requested or listed as interests.
For those of you who haven't this kind of thing before, the most popular words with the highest instances of mentions are shown the largest.
Angelic Pretty was the most popular brand, followed by Innocent World and BTSSB. The most popular anime was My Hero Academia, followed by Love Live.

Yay! I'm so glad this is back, I love this - I have some saved photos of last year's gifts and art also that I can compile this week.

I have a general question for gulls - my main jfash interest is gyaru. I used to be into cosplay and dipped my toes into lolita but now it's just gyaru and general kawaii. I have participated for the last 4 years maybe? and I feel like each year the organisers have a little difficulty to match me. I lurk and I do my research, I've never had any complaints about my gifts and I've adored all of my gifts I've received, but I wonder if it'd be better to sit out so everyone gets a match into their own style?

I really liked the form from last year, I thought it covered everything and there were less "idk wtf to get my santa" in my opinion?

>> No.10262977

Are anons who get grinched compensated?

>> No.10263118

>>10262973
Agreed, though it still depends on how much effort people put into filling in the forms. I'm pretty sure some people were commenting last year that their match hadn't been really informative or put in some broad interests. There were a lot of people asking for clarification etc or more info, I think more than other years.

Please people, try to not to be too vague or broad with what you'd like to receive! Take your time in filling out the form in its entirety. This both for things you would really like and things you hate, with everything in between. Example links or descriptions are never too many!

Though sometimes even filling in the form properly doesn't help and you get paired with a crossboarder who sends you 20 bows and some cash cause 'I thought lolitas liked bows??'

Suggestion maybe to not allow crossboarders unless they've already entered/are on the white list? Just to make sure they do in fact know what lolita fashion/cosplay is...

>>10262977
There are absolute angels among us who each year volunteer to send a gift to someone who got grinched. People who get no gift at all or in case of plain bad gifts get a gift from a volunteer as such.

>> No.10263128

>>10263118
I don’t know how it’d be possible to eliminate crossboarders if they don’t say it upfront...maybe before they get matched with a lolita they have to answer a little quiz about lolita? But iirc bow dude last year was matched with a lolita who was also a cosplayer and he just went with bows rather than anything else???

Please if you’re a crossboarder just don’t. Spoil a family member or donate to a kickstarter but don’t sign up here because experience shows you will just ruin a gull’s experience.

>> No.10263133

>>10263128
I figure it can't really be strictly done, there's no foolproof way to exclude people who don't know and -more importantly show no interest in learning- what this boards actual subjects are.

I just hope people that really don't have any business joining a cgl Secret Santa indeed just don't.

I remember also that the girl had a form with both lolita and cosplay interests. She literally posted her form in the thread at some point iirc. To be fair in the end it was him (with Santa's help I think?) who did in the end sent the girl a new and better gift so let's not drag that particular guy back through the mud. He was just the example I took.

>> No.10263138

A quiz won't do anything, like they can just google the answers? its also ok for someone to join just being a cosplayer, matching with another cosplayer. So they'd also not know much about lolita

>> No.10263166

out of 55 participants from 17 countries, one was a crossboarder who messed up. year before that or maybe a couple years before idk there was one other guy.

that's two instances over several years and there's anons to help the duped gulls along with those that got grinched. does this really need measures taken

>> No.10263185

When will the form be up? Also are we gonna be using a program like elfster or no?

>> No.10263245

>>10263133
You’re right, the girl’s form did include a variety of interests, including stuff that normies could easy shop for (I believe she liked Transformers, so that could’ve been one idea to go from). Ultimately they were matched because of within- region shipping requests, and they had both mentioned cosplay and some of the same characters. We didn’t really have any reason to think anything would go wrong, as we’ve previously had men who are into cosplay join the exchange and give a good gift.

We have talked about implementing various kinds of vetting, but this board has such a wide range of styles and many foreign visitors. Additionally, a crossboarder could easily lie or make something up when asked about their personal style or what they cosplay, etc. Previous year’s (2017?) matching used a program that not only paired people based on keywords, but also on the length of their application (people who wrote more about themselves got matched with someone who did the same, people who wrote barely anything got matched together).

As >>10263166 points out, these are rare instances. Yeah it sucks when it happens, but I am confident that most people go into it with good intentions. Last year, Santa and I read through applications and saw a few ‘red flags’, and did our best to mitigate any potential disasters while still allowing the people to participate. This is one of the reasons why we will be matching by hand, and not using a program like Elfster, just to answer >>10263185. Of course feel free to send any feedback or suggestions for improvement in matches. Not everyone is going to have a perfect match, but we will try our best!
One of my favourite matches were the two anons who both loved Yu-Gi-Oh, and one of the gifts was entirely themed around a Kaiba Corp welcome box. It was very wholesome!

Not entirely sure when the form will go up, but hopefully within a week or less!

So the rules state you can't ask for only brand, but is it allowed to specify no Taobao? I'm fine with any indie or western brand or gifts for other interests than lolita but all my experiences with Taobao have been god awful and I hate their general aesthetic and fabric choices.

>> No.10267885

>>10267878
Only brand I think means you cannot ask to receive literally only brand items, so if you specify other interests than lolita and say what you've said above that should be fine. It's generally because as much as the organisers try to match lolitas with other lolitas there might be the odd cosplayer to lolita match and they need to have a fair chance, as well as brand not being realistic for every tier. I'd probably say as well whether you mind getting non-lolita items bought from taobao or just taobao lolita brands.

Should normally manage if I order the moment I get to see my match's forms. I don't want to order a bunch of kawaii stationery and then spot a 'none of exactly that, please' on their forms. Even as just an extra lil something it'd still be at the least weird to get something you don't really want in your gift.

Anyone else not really link to anything they wanted? I put down one thing I really wanted, but I would prefer to see what someone comes up with. I typically have the money to buy what ever I want so I never really have wants.

Also I was worried that if I had an international match they might now be able to even get what was in the links.

Now I am worried that if my match has a lot of links that they will be disappointed if I do not get them what they want. I know the form says that it is no guarantee you get what you want, but they put it down for a reason.

It's in case the person runs out of time and doesn't have time to pick a thoughtful gift, or if there's an uneven number of people and I get paired with someone who doesn't know where to shop for jfashion at all, or if I get paired with someone who is too nervous that whatever they come up with on their own won't be good enough. >> No.10268715

>>10268633
The only thing that concerns me is that unless you have given clear ideas for things you would actually want, this could be difficult. If you are prepared for questions then it should be okay. The links should just be ideas, my match last year gave a pinterest which was really helpful but I didn't feel the need to buy anything directly off it.

>> No.10268832

I put down a lot of links in my form, as inspiration and to give my match an idea of what kind of stuff I'd like. No 'buy me these' intention but in my form I wrote things like 'I love things to decorate with' and then a few links show examples like cute placemats, plant pots etc

Imo links are good for inspiration and to show your match your taste in things. As long as your form is clear and detailed enough on that aspect it doesn't need 20 links

41 Sign Ups so far! And we still have 1 week to go - so the event is already bigger this year which is great!

There were a few issues with the form not noting down peoples gift choices for the first few sign ups, so Santa or one of the Helpers will send out mail to those whose forms were effected!

> Heaps more EU sign ups!
Good news for EU gulls, there are many more people from the EU this years, so things will be easier and obviously cheaper all round! We will still do matching mostly by mutual interests, but it makes it much better for us and those who have selected EU only!

To note, I am last years Santa so I will trip in the thread but have not provided an email as I will be going away for the majority of November! But I will be watching the thread and help pass on any concerns to Santa and the Elves!

I would like feedback from others. I emailed my match last year about more info on stuff thet wanted in the 40$ tier. I got them 70$ worth of stuff. And I got them exactly what they asked for, sweet smelling perfume that smells like strawberries, sweet candies, makeup stencils, like Beth stencils, urban decay eyeshadow, a makeup bag, a cupcake necklace that was really cute and 18$ in itself, a bunch of vanilla and sweet themed bath soaps and salts, and I'm being told I grinched them because they didn't like their gift even tho I got them exactly what they told me in said email they wanted. Yes you will, we have whitelists back to 2015!

>>10271296
If you want to take this publicly to the thread, let me reiterate. Again.

>You emailed your match.
First of all, you were the ONLY participant last year who we gave direct contact to their giftee with (reluctantly). Your reasoning was that they didnt fill out their form in full detail and didnt know what to buy them. However, re-reading their form they specified they liked lolita fashion and fairy kei, as well as a full list of brands they liked. They included all the colours which make up their wardrobe as well as their favorite themes and anime.

>The form specified they did not want jewellery
You gifted jewellery

>After direct contact
The match still did not like the gift. You may have over spent, sure, however your match did not initially ask for any of the items in which you sent. And thought the gift felt cheap and not very relevant.

>Contact with helpers
You were also one of the only people we were in constant contact with as you seemed to have not properly read the form, such as asking your giftee directly about your gift which we noted multiple times was not the person sending your gift! When it came to sending the card, you came to us and said you didnt realise you had to send a card.. despite clicking you wanted to send a card?

>WE HAVE NOT BLACKLISTED YOU
We offered you a solution to cap you at the $25 tier to see if you could in fact, read a form and not have to be contacted multiple times. To which you have taken to the thread to kick up a fuss. The fact you are the ONLY person we have been in constant contact with both last year and apparently this year, was warning enough for us. It is in favor of the organisers and other participants that we cap you at a lower tier.

>> No.10271385

>>10271347
No I showed you guys an exact screen shot you keep ignoring of my match specifically telling me what other things they wanted as a gift, which I got them those exact items. They said they didn't want jewelry from Claire's to which I didn't get them jewelry from Claire's. Which you admin keep bringing up but ignoring they specifically mentioned not from Claire's. They listed lolita stuff which was not in that budget so I got them the specific stuff they asked for in the email so they got a lot of items instead of one skirt. I showed you admins and you are still saying I did not get them anything they asked for which isn't true. Urban decay makeup is not "cheap. " I also got makeup stencils from elf and Anastasia Beverly hills, one being 20$ and a brand name which is also not cheap and is brand name and you guys still are saying I basically gave my person dollar store items which isn't true at all. To which I am saying, how is this fair when I did exactly what they told me in the email they wanted? Because that's why you told me I couldn't participate normally this year and have to do the absolute lowest tier and when I showed the screen shot then you said the items were "cheap" and not quality when the brands I just mentioned are extremely high quality. So how is any of this fair?? Excuse my Grammer. I emailed a lot to try and make sure I spoiled this person and they unfortunately didn't like me getting them the exact kind of perfume and makeup items they like. It just seems sketchy and unfair. I spent all of December in the hospital and still made sure they got their item in time for Christmas and then my messages have been ignored and told that I basically gave them garbage. Like I don't know what else to say when I literally got them exactly what they wanted. I just don't get it and I know I'm repeating myself a lot here but I spent a lot of effort into those items and am being punished for getting them exactly what they asked for..

I'm not sure why you are trying to spin this as if I hounded you guys. This was my email asking for their email. You guys gave it to me no questions asked so I don't know why you making it out to be more than it is. The whole thing is just really sketchy. I understand that I did not send you guys an email confirming I sent the item, I did however to my match, multiple emails that they never responded to, which were even more questions about things they wanted since they just said sweet smelling perfume like candy and makeup. idunno, >>10271347 also says they kept pestering their giftee and keep misreading forms. It sounds more like the fuss is that santa was also a bit troublesome and pestered the giftee to accept a bunch of things she didn't originally want. On top of not sending any legit jfash.

Though honestly the cherry for me is santa keeps saying they spent a lot of money on expensive things, got a bad experience, and still insist on spending a lot of money this year. Usually someone burnt that way would walk away instead of insisting they need to be allowed to spend even more money, or they'd pick a lower tier by themselves to avoid needing to spend that kind of money for nothing. It just sounds like they can get "expensive" makeup for cheap and are trying to make someone send them an expensive dress in return, actually.

I was sent multiple emails from your giftee showing you were asking her for a gift in return. I understand that this may be because you thought it was 1 to 1 matching, however this was explained multiple times in the threads that it was all matched by hand, as well as us telling you directly she was not your match.

While lolita branded stuff may not have been within budget, you can easily find cute and related fashion items which are within the budget on etsy, taobao, aliexpress or even lacemarket itself. You note you gave her ABH and UD items, but we did not see anything like that in the photos we were originally sent. If they were sent, then I of course apologise, but we have not seen them.

We also noted a few of the items were subscription box items and that made the gift feel quite thrown together and irrelevant to what was in the original form.

I did not wish there to be this kinda drama this year, but if you would like us to drop the picture of what we were sent so it can be discussed by other participants then let us know.

It is not just about how much money you spend, but how the money is used.
A previous participant blew double his budget on bows which could have been bought on AliExpress for 1/10000th of the price. Just because you spend your budget on overpriced goods, doesnt necessarily mean it is a good gift.

I have a kawaii subscription box coming every month, super cute things. Might put something cute in my giftee's gift if I find it matches their form and I have no use for it myself.

But actually putting in multiple items like that, items I already had and thus didn't specifically buy for my giftee going off on their form? That's iffy imo, those things are extras like if you put in candy or tea your giftee might like.

anon, do you count those items when you say you 'spent' 70$ on your giftee's gift?

Imo the only time complaining would be reasonable is if you put something on your form like you're a sweet pastel only lolita and they get you a black skirt, or if your bust is 90 cm and they get you an 80 cm blouse. If it's off by a few cm or the color doesn't match your dresses then just resell it. If you're really that worried just don't participate and buy something you know you want, your santa isn't a mind reader

make your form as detailed as possible, put in your measurements correctly and list colours you want and ones you absolutely don't want. The more info you give the less chance of getting something you really don't want.

If you still end up with something unsuited to your wardrobe, selling it off is indeed the norm I think.

I gave her a bunch of makeup tools and small things that were wrapped in the makeup bag along with the snacks I got. I did go to a etsy marketplace meet upwhich is where I got her the sweet smelling bath stuff she said she liked.
I did throw in some subscription stuff I got because my match did not give me much I do on what she liked besides candy smelling perfumes and makeup and fairy kei and cats. So I threw in stuff that she told me in the email. I asked her for more info but she never responded. The subscription stuff I added was all extra I don't count that as the budget I spent at all as that makes no sense. I also only messages the admins once by myself to fix something on the application and twice asking if I could email my match, the picture posted above. I'm not sure why you guys are saying I "hounded you" when it was you asking me questions and me responding. Or me pleading for my matches email when I literally just said "hey x is my match may I have their email" as shown in the screen shot and you guys gave it to me right away. I don't get why it's being spun into some drama that it never was. Im sorry my match did not like their item, if they did not want the stuff I got them I wish they would have been more specific instead of just cats and candy perfume. I get I did not properly inform you guys when I sent my package as I told her when it was sent instead. also did think she was my gift giver as well so I gave her info about myself but realized literally the next day by questions people asked in the Santa thread last year that that wasn't the case. I had major surgery that December and was really sick the prior months and doing this was one of the things that helped distract me that winter so I'm sorry I did not do well enough to my Match, but I really enjoyed it. may I please be able to participate in the 50$ - $90 range so I can please make someone's Christmas a bit nicer. I unironically think this should be part of the form. Last year I got a Lolita, and I am pretty sure she disliked her gifts. Like a true Lolita she showed a lot of grace in the face of disappointment. I am worried that Lolita or not I will not do well again if I get a girl.

>> No.10272769

I’m so pissed off with people bragging about how you should be getting JFASH as a main gift ITT. Like what the actual heck? If you want jfash only say so in your freaking form. Not everyone will hit the budget with listed items/find you a really good item in a period of time/etc. For me, an item from general wishlist that I really want > a lolita-related item that’s not quite it/shitty quality/etc. I know that in the drama above anon-chan can’t proof getting her match branded cosmetics etc but people saying she should had got her jfash only as a main are ridiculous.

>> No.10272774

It's a /cgl/ secret santa though, it's only logical that a major part of the gift should be /cgl/-related, whether the anon in question likes cosplay or jfashion.

>> No.10272792

>>10272774
And how can you say if something is related to /cgl/ or not?
Example: anon X writes in their form that they like larme kei, and anon Y gets them pompom earrings. This considered larme?
Anon X says they like classic lolita, so anon Y gets them say a rocking horse necklace. This considered jfash?
Anon X says they like sweet lolita and perfume, so anon Y gets them chocolate-smelling perfume. This considered jfash item?
Anon X says they like cosplay and lenses, so anon Y gets them lenses. This gift /cgl/ related? Like WHAT is considered /cgl/ related? Does it NEED to be an exact wishlist item? Have a brand tag attached? What if instead a Listen Flavor tee I send my match a really cute offbrand tee?
I always thought participating in /cgl/ SS is about interaction with people who share the same interests. Sure it has to have a special approach, and getting matches gifts as close to their /cgl/ wishlist as possible, BUT if for some reason they aren’t satisfied with a related gift and don’t consider it related, I don’t think that anyone should be judged, moreso have to ship additional items or whatever.

I’m not actually talking about the girl above. I just got irritated by topics which occurred within the conversation. First, if my match would, for example, note jfash-related items which were impossible to get because they’re higher-tier/expensive/rare/whatever I’d just get them whatever else is there on the list. And I don’t think it’s fair to judge for that in general. I participated last years and I was always positive receiving non-lolita as a main myself.
Second, I got a bit bewildered by the policy of reacting to the gifts which were related, but a bit of a miss for the giftee, and the topic of gifts’ cgl-relation itself because in my opinion it’s all very subjective. I think it should be simple - what you get, it’s either on your wishlist or not. If you want jfash as a main only, state it in your form. If you get whatever else was there initially in your form, don’t complain.

Be disappointed is one thing, demanding blacklisting someone/sending additional gifts is the other. You can get unlucky, this happens, but this is generally within the rules. I’d be very happy to receive a top premium and rare tea blend myself as a fellow tea-lover, so this is still subjective. >> No.10273277

Exactly. If your Santa has gone on in detail about how they wear gothic lolita, like xyz brand, collect jewellery with crosses on, need wrist cuffs etc. and then offhandedly throw in “oh and I like tea” and you send a box stuffed with tea, that is a bad gift. I highly doubt many people have signed up for this cgl secret Santa to get things not related to their cgl interest like this? I’m not saying it has to be brand, this goes same for cosplayers interests. I’m not talking about cosplayers matched with lolitas (though if possible they should try and get lolita gifts) who then buy gifts related to their other interests, husbandos etc. I’m not talking about the $15 tier where it’s not unrealistic to get all filler gifts. It’s a douche move when you’re in the $30 tier and your giftee has raved about fairy kei, mentioned sheet masks once and you get $30 worth of sheet masks and not one fairy kei item, even if it’s loosely related or not exactly the giftees taste or second hand or whatever. In that case you have not bothered to include the cgl interest in a cgl secret Santa and therefore what are you doing here? If that person collects tea or whatever they will say so and that ISN’T then a filler gift, but really everyone here signed up because they have a cgl interest. That should get the most emphasis in the gift because that is why they are here. Who are these imaginary tea collectors who have no interest in lolita or cosplay and have signed up for a lolita and cosplay based secret Santa? It’s generally a bad idea to give a gift that’s all just the same thing anyway, it’s pretty boring.

Sorry, Gulls! We're getting ourselves organised, everyone is in different time zones so the communication can take longer if we aren't all online!

I am emailing what I can, but its a suuuper tedious task and you get over it quickly (its just taken me around an hour and a half to send out less than 10 emails)! But as the others wake up more emails will start going out!

Thing is compared to everyone else I spoiled my card match last year so now I'm obligated to go super hard on this one.

Not really. A lot of guys unload a lot of dumb shit onto you, like my last one did. We do the normal sheet fill, and then you buy accordingly. Most kommandos put a lot of thought into their gifts, and a small minority dont and are just wanting free milsurp to fleece other people\ while off loading shit they bought on accident or stuff theyve never used.

I don't share any interests with my match for my higher gift tier and I'm really worried I'm not going to be able to get them a gift they like. I'm a lolita who isn't into anime but their main interest is anime and I only know one of the series they mentioned. I'm gonna try my best but I don't know, I'm really worried about shopping for them. Pray for me gulls.

I found my giftee’s dream dress for a good price, but its above the spending limit. Do i get the dress and maybe one small something or get things i know she listed as needs/several smaller items and fit in the spending limit?

I know the excitement of getting a dream item and i want to gift that feeling but i dont want my person feeling bad i spent over the limit?

>> No.10276195

>>10276188
If I was in your situation, I would buy the dress if I could afford it. Going over the limit is not really seen as rude or anything, and I would sob if my Santa found one of my dream dresses.

I mentioned Jace in my favorite characters section, but I only play sealed, so I can't really use anything besides land. Also, even though he's my favorite plainswalker, my favorite color combo to play is Black/White.

Look through previous year's pictures. Anons have done just that - sent a single item gift that was their giftee's dd - and it was totally fine. Maybe they added a sticker sheet for variety but that's it.
Good job in finding your gift so early!

Hello 7458! I just wanted to pop you a few questions before I start shopping, I hope that's alright?

Do you have pierced ears? Do you have a preference for hot chocolate, tea or coffee at all? And finally do you like maid cafes in general, or only cosplaying maids yourself?

Your form was excellent and I'm so excited to be your Santa!

I have pierced ears, just the standard lobe piercing at the moment. Preference is hot chocolate because I only drink iced coffee (I'm a heathen).

As for the maid cafes, I'm not a big fan of the overly kawaii acting/accents and some of the more cutesy routines but I love maid cafe aesthetics (like the cute food!) and I love maid fashion.

I'm so excited now!

Dear 4264,

I think I managed to find the main part of your gift already! Quite excited, as I am a sweet lolita and shopping for a gothic/old school lolita is a bit of a challenge. I really hope you'll like it! I will start looking around for some cute fillers now. Just wanted to ask if you'd enjoy receiving anything related to skincare (you mentioned you like makeup but not specifically skincare) and if you have any preference regarding tea. Also what's your favorite and least favourite colour?

>> No.10276453

ID 5297 - it'd be great to have a collage of your fairy kei wardrobe if that's okay, to get an idea of what you have and like! Maybe you could send it on to Santa to forward it to me?

Also: as an idea for the large/medium sized portion of the gift and not just smaller fillers, would you be happy with fairy kei clothing in general i.e. hoodies/jackets, skirts, dresses? And general lolita accessories? If I can't find suitable tops.
I'm kind of scared to look for Milklim as I can't determine if it's pre-2015 or not haha.

I can also see you don't want any makeup, but would skincare e.g. masks be okay?
