I’ve done most methods (lemon, Oxyclean, vodka, etc) and as long as it’s within the garment’s washing restrictions (no bleach on colors) it’s worked okay. There’s no perfect fix. The difference is the peeling, falling-apart stuff was definitely stored in a room which got really hot during the day -- it's a store room that faces the sun, heat builds up. The non-peeling, still-perfect after 3 years was stored in a depressingly dim room that rarely gets any sunlight so it's always cool.

Actually I already posted this several years ago, keeping it away from heat is the key to keeping pleather good. If you're buying secondhand you run a risk because you don't know how that particular owner stored their items. But taobaolitas always gonna keep yelling about their burando shoes falling apart and burandolitas always gonna keep yelling about their burando shoes not falling apart, I guess it's more fun that way, idk.

I was asking myself since there is a lot of people who debate over modyfing brand or not ( as it would lower it's value and not make it original anymore ), does brand have an archive of they dresses ( in physical form )? Or at least a temporary one for copyright. The question also hited me because it's a debate that appear in the vintage car community but car company have an archive ( or at least some museum have archive of their model ) so there is at least one model that stay original.

I've also owned both and never had any severe issues with peeling from either. For me, it's just the price difference. Since I've had my offbrand ones stay in just as good condition as brand shoes, I tend to buy offbrand because they're significantly cheaper.

The point about secondhand pleather is really important, though. How someone cares for something is sometimes impossible to tell based on a couple of photos.

Hot glue will just fall off as soon as you brush against anything. If your shoes are fabric, you can just attach stuff on with safety pins, and that won't damage the base shoe and lets you swap out decorations whenever you like. Sewing them on is a bit more permanent. If they're pleather, any holes will remain so you can't just take off the decorations, but you can still change decorations with safety pins as long as they cover pin holes. Turning them from open to closed toe will be a pain though, I wouldn't recommend trying.

Normally, if it's a simple rectangle cut, it has an exclusive print, usually a border print. The money went into paying the illustrators and getting the custom fabric printed.

Taobao generally goes the route of surface printing, on a lot of dresses, if you pick at the top of the skirt, the underneath is white. If you so much as snag one line of thread on a black dress, it'll be really obvious as the white fabric underneath the print will be exposed.

Burando goes for the type of printing where the ink sinks deeper into the fabric. So it's common to find dresses that are 5+ years old, it may be damaged, fading, or pilling, but the print will still be there. Even modern AP that anons like to complain about the cheapness is still printed this way, the delicate fabric may snag but from a distance it won't ruin the entire dress.

If it's not a custom exclusive print, then generally the dress will have a lot more detailing -- that's when the money went into producing the detailing rather than the print.

Considering no lolita item I ever saw uses real natural velvet or anything like that, just trow it inside out in the wash machine on hand-wash/delicate cycle and hand it to dry (not inside out) without wringing it carefully and without clothespins and it should be fine. All you need to worry is not squash the tiny hairs, but for this, not folding or pressing tends to be enough. Even easier because they to be iron-free. Do note that they often run like hell the first time, so wash the dress separate first time (which you should do with any new clothing item anyways). I was referring to that. But even for velvet it doesn't always count, it depends on what the velvet is made from. Most velvet and velveteen nowadays is synthetic and can be washed easily.

I've never seen the actual high quality "don't get this shit wet and just take it to the dry cleaner" type of fabric no matter if people call it velvet or velveteen. Lolita tends to use cheaper (not necessarily cheap, just cheaper) versions you can easily wash at home.

This is very misguided. Velveteen describes a weave. Cotton is a fiber. While velveteen is very commonly made from cotton there's nothing in the definition of velveteen that states it must be made of cotton. Velvet is also a type of weave.

Isn't velvet is cut pile? I guess it could be woven and then cut. Still, that's missing the point.

If something like velveteen is almost always made from cotton, velveteen can be shorthand referred to as something that is cotton. And if velvet is almost always a mostly poly or synthetic blend, we can refer to velvet as something usually majority synthetic fabrics right?

No need to get into particulars if the question is about whether the fibers are natural are not. They're usually natural for one and mostly or partly synthetic for the other.

I have never found non cotton velveteen based on my experience buying fabric online and in store, which is why I assumed all velveteen is typically cotton.

Nayrt but regular antiperspirants with aluminum won't discolor your clothes if you put your deodorant on at night before you go to bed only rather than in the morning, and it actually works better this way. Antiperspirant works by blocking your pores so you don't sweat, putting it on at night = more time to get into your pores, and no sticky residue left in the morning to discolor your clothes. Natural and non-aluminum deodorants can still discolor clothes if applied in the morning depending on what's in them, because you still have a residue coming in contact with the fabric.

they're not traditionally a fashion item. men wore them to protect their hair during strenuous activity. maids also wore them to sleep so they wouldn't have to do their hair up again the next day since it was common for maids to have all their hair up in braids or buns. chun li probably just has them because she is a fighter and needs to make sure her hair doesn't fall, and it just stuck because the bun covers look pretty cute.

I really want a Roland for a particular coord, but they just don't come in the colour I need. I could sew one using the two I already have to make a pattern, but I don't want to be labelled a replica-chan. I was thinking I could use a different material and decorate it heavily, but everyone will still be able to tell that the base is copied off a Roland.

I could also change the coord to use one of the Rolands I already have, but I do want to decorate the coat and I don't want to ruin my actual brand ones.

What should I do?

For those of you with boyfriends:

How does he dress when you wear lolita? Sometimes I feel awkward "outdressing" him in my nicer coords, even though he doesn't mind. Would a blazer be nice?

And how frowned upon would it be to bring him to a meet or even more formal event? He's personable and polite so I know he wouldn't be awkward. I've gone to every meet alone without him, so I certainly don't need him to be there or anything. But it would be nice to be able to give him a better glimpse into my hobbies!

My bf wears normie clothes, but it's a bit put-together since it's vaguely skater style. So it's not like he's in scuffed Sketchers and basketball shorts and an old, free t-shirt from college. I have him wear something like Vans, Levis, and a brand-name graphic tee, especially if it has some nice nostalgic game/cartoon art. A plaid button-up for nice dinners. He's usually the one who feels underdressed next to me, whereas I don't care at all.

I think if you want to bring yours to a meet, then you should specifically organize a non-jfash-friends-welcome meet so everyone who attends is comfortable with non-lolitas being present.

>reverse image search
this isn't especially helpful nowadays for replicas, but it will weed out obvious milanoo-type situations

>learn to use lolibrary
use the tags function, like if the taobao piece has regimental stripes and teddy bears you can input that and narrow your search down a bit.

>learn what brand clothes look like
even though each brand releases a variety of stuff, they generally have a fairly distinct aesthetics and features that you can spot. ex: btssb is often reminiscent of rococo, folk costumes, and frilly old-school pieces. They use a lot of mismatched bows, and often striped or text bows. modern AP has lots of higher-waist pieces in airy fabrics with soft dreamy prints. Meta uses bolder colors, almost always have partial shirring, does lots of wa-loli and other "weird" and experimental stuff like unusual print topics.

>learn to look for quality markers in photographs
this is VERY difficult sometimes bc taobao manufactures will photoshop pictures and do tricks to hide flaws and cheapness. (like putting too-large dresses on a tiny model to hide problems like pulling across the back/shoulders) (taking pretty dynamic fantasy photos rather than close-ups in normal lighting)

if you're new, taobao can be great but you run the risk of wasting lots of money on trash quality pieces when you could buy used brand for the same price. Kera often posts high quality close-ups of new brand releases, so you can learn to see details like custom lace and buttons, glitter fabrics, neatness of seams, pintucks and ruffles, etc.

If you have the money, the simplest answer is buy burando (not random brands, y'know, the main "brands" -- AP, btssb, VM, MM, MmM, Meta, etc). They don't make replicas -- they're the ones being copied. Safest bet of all.

If you can't buy direct firsthand, you can buy secondhand, aim for the less popular pieces as those will be the ones less likely to be copied, and request to see the dress label. You can try to search the seller's name and see if it's someone who really wears lolita, less chances of it being someone who is scamming replicas as the real thing.

If you really do not want to do brand, then stick to a reliable shop. Don't go buying random stuff off Aliexpress, and don't rely on posting the photos -- on Aliexpress there's no real lolita shops, period. So the store photos are probably lifted straight from taobao and you simply can't tell whether they're real or not. So, no wish, no aliexpress, no amazon sellers.

A couple of resellers like Clobba or My Lolita Dress will straight up mention in the listing whether or not an item is a replica or not, so that's a good option to stick with, even if they're more expensive.

If you really, really want to directly buy it off taobao, you can use the info from Clobba/MLD to find the brand names, then find the taobao shops. Then buy it directly from the taobao shops. Don't buy it secondhand or off other random taobao shops -- taobao replicates other taobao brands as well, except they really give no fucks and the replicas are generally about ten times worse.

Hope this makes sense. It's easier to make sure you're buying the real thing by going to a reliable source, rather than starting with a photo (that may have even been stolen, so it's useless still) and then running all over the place hoping to find someone who has seen the same dress *and* knows more about it than you *and* they happen to see your post asking about it.

I don't think bringing your SO to a meet is a good idea if it's a larger group or a formal event. If it's a cheap non-brand piece maybe try converting it to a 2 way apron (removing the bib part and then reattaching it with buttons, snaps, or hooks)? Then you can remove that part completely and not worry about folding it under anything.

If it's brand or something you don't feel comfortable adjusting though I'd stick with being neat and careful folding it or just buying a half apron when you come across one you like.
