So we have this genius who thinks that the Coronavirus is not a big deal.

>>10355010

I honestly wonder if they have ever been to a con. You have ten's if not hundreds of thousands of people there who don't even follow the basic hygiene regiment. Then you throw in a virus that at this moment has infected 15x more people than SARS ever did. Take those two and then put it into a convention center that has everyone rubbing against each other because the convention center is at max capacity. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if the CDC just firebombed the convention center.

So to all anon out there who are annoyed that the 2020 con season is not going to happen, DEAL WITH IT. It is better to be cautious and just wait until next year instead of using con's as a way to spread a highly contagious, deadly disease because you had to go and spend 3x as much for a figure instead of just buying it online. Seriously, you can wait another year.

The main difference is that cons are events, not jobs. Contracted employees are still employees of a company so they retain certain rights and benefits. Most airlines are being pretty accommodating with allowing you to cancel without fees. It's definitely worth a try to call up customer service and state that while you understand the fare is marked nonrefundable, these are extenuating circumstances. Emphasize that it is officially classified as a pandemic by WHO and you are concerned for your and others' health. If your customer service agent doesn't budge, hang up and call again to try another. In the long run....yes? Because bigger businesses get bailed out, they’ll get tax relief and other ways to help them.

I’m a different anon.

Also I think some anons are getting job and income confused. Someone can have one job (or business) but multiple paths of income for it. Rule of thumb is that it’s a good idea to have 3 paths of income, for some that’s conventions, online sales and commissions. For others it’s conventions, in store sales, and online sales.

Even with other paths of income, losing out on guaranteed money is terrible and it’s not like anyone expected this to happen, these are very random circumstances nobody could’ve expected before last month.

There’s cons being cancelled that are a week or less out, those vendors/artists have already invested in travel, badge/booth costs, temporary sales licensing if its out of state for them, not even mentioning money spent on replenishing our getting new stock. No amount of “just list of online!” is going to help someone who was expecting to make $1k+ in a weekend, when it might take them weeks to make that equivalent in online sales.

Just a lurker, but while I sympathize with their situation, bitching on cgl isn't going to change anything. Right now it's a pandemic trying to be contained. You either got careless idiots or people unnecessarily buying out toilet paper. I don't see how limiting interaction with large groups is a bad thing? You can have and spread it without showing any symptoms in the early stages.
I get it fucking sucks, but literally being in this industry, or any really, means having to deal with unprecedented events and adapting.

in >>10356008 you(or whoever) said it's their only job as well and don't seem to realize that dealers (who aren't artists) have successful online or physical stores and just bring stock from them to cons.

I’m a vendor, many of your generic anime or plushie vendors do not have online or physical stores. Many of them make all of their income during summer con season and attend as much as possible.

Besides, if everyone is on lockdown it’s not like online sales or in person sales wont also be affected. It’s a hit to ALL sources of income.

>> No.10356259

I'm not that anon, but I have literally never ever seen any vendor that didn't have a storefront of some kind. Vendors are usually the most eager to throw business cards or stickers with their site plastered all over it at you.

Why is everyone ITT so insistent on larping as artists or vendors?

>> No.10356263

>>10356259
I'm assuming no storefront applies to small time artist who only go to conventions? Or maybe they don't want to deal with fees? But at that point, if small shop fees and shipping are "too expensive" then this type of thing doesn't seem like a good source of income for you anyways.

>> No.10356270

That makes ense but even small artists usually have something online. I am really laughing at the idea that "many vendors" don't have online stores or physical shops when most vendors are comprised of local city shops (many bootleg riddled chinatown shops) or big name online ones. Especially considering these vendors have tons of stock left at the end of season, the implication that they simply don't sell it ANYWHERE after is really stupid.

Lmao. The death rate of a lot of diseases would knock both covid19 and the flu out of the park. The truth is that the flu has a lot more cases, despite the lower death rate. Either way, it’s not like we need more deaths on top of the flu so hopefully the people will be cautious against covid19 and take measures (handwashing, socially distancing). It’ll help with lessening flu death toll to so win-win.

Viral diseases with high death tolls are rare outside of tropical regions. Rarer still with this level of transmissibility.

Yes--obviously--given that it's been present in the population for thousands of years. A simple thing called math can show you the potential spread of covid without serious intervention like in China.

That goes without saying? Obviously infectious diseases propagate like crazy when the masses are uninformed. The current flu statistics are the numbers with some interventions; surely the potential spread would be a lot worse if not. The hard-handed approach of cancelling gatherings and such is necessary because better to nip the problem in the bud, but it doesn’t mean that this coronavirus is more dangerous than sars or the other pandemic viruses before it. My point is that people should be cautious, but it’s not like covid19 will evolve into the Spanish flu.

Yes, that much is true. The main issue is its relative difficulty in containment. While it's not as individually deadly as sars-1 (or god forbid mers) it could end up having a significantly higher death toll simply because it's much harder to contain. Worst case scenario is it becomes seasonal.

You are aware that the Spanish Flu had an estimated death rate of a bit above 2.5%? Covid19 so far isn't that far off, and that's with plenty of intervention and modern medicine. It's dangerous mainly in how fast it spreads and how many people are unable to get treatment due to overloaded health systems.

The idea behind social distancing and cancelling large events is to slow the spread of the disease so the medical system doesn't get overwhelmed the way it has in Italy. There's not going to be a vaccine for this for another year, so right now most people will end up getting this in one way or another - but if that catching it gets spread out over a few months instead of a few weeks it means hospitals etc don't get overwhelmed. See "flattening the curve".

Postponed events are hoping we will be on the other side of the peak by the time the new event happens and it'll be "safe" because most people will have been exposed already

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST

>> No.10357952

>>10357633
They didn't learn from 2008 though
The 2008 crisis was caused by risky speculation on mortgage backed securities that were rated AAA but were actually subprime. The problem was that they became subprime before anybody noticed, then everybody suddenly realized that all these securities they held were actually totally worthless and freaked out.
Currently, corporate debt is at higher levels than 2008. A lower percentage of bonds held by banks are corporate junk bonds compared to how many mortgage junk bonds were held by banks in 2008, but corporate junk bonds are at higher levels than 2008. However, this doesn't account for the fact that many of those non junk corporate bonds are suddenly going to become junk as companies on already shaky ground are downgraded.
So instead of having mortgage bonds you think are AAA but are actually subprime, you have corporate bonds that were AAA that suddenly become subprime.
So it's like 2008 but with corporate debt instead of mortgage debt.
Add into the mix that a lot of debt to US banks, trillions of it, is held overseas, from other countries that are having the same problems everybody else is having. The suddenly injection of $1.5 trillion by the feds is a desperate attempt to keep the global system afloat. These problems became visible in September 2019 already, coronavirus is just making a bad situation worse. I think that's probably the biggest issue, but I admit I don't fully understand it and it's easier to envision the problem as it relates to something like domestic retail, or anything that will be hit hard for 1-2 quarters. Imagine something like Macy's which currently owes $5b in corporate debt that it already has little hope of paying back. They will go under, and they will take some local real estate and malls down with them. But that's just the start.
They did learn that they can't really let major banks fail and that letting Lehman fail was a big mistake, so they might not do that again. They did learn that.
