10433016 No.10433016 [Reply] [Original]

There was a time when brolitas were accepted in the communities as long as they actually participated in the fashion properly. I'd like to start a thread that takes us back to the time before. It was a short time but it was okay for boys to wear dresses just because they wanted to be pretty and not have some agenda behind it. I only have this one guy as an example but if there are others post them as well.

On one side, I want to encourage men to enjoy feminity if they want to without them believing they are trans or sissy or at risk of being beat up by other men. I’ve always been curious about this logic as I’ve heard it a lot from brolitas. I just find it difficult to understand how can one want to dress up in super girly clothing and not want to look like a woman while doing so. Not trying to attack, I’m just genuinely curious.

I really wish I had a better answer, but i just wear the clothes because I like it? Im not actively going out of my way NOT to look like a woman, It's just not my primary goal. Personally, I appreciate the fashion, find it (it took my a while to think of the word) elegant, but I divorce the idea of "feminine" from it. At least no more feminine than a pair of pants are masculine, or how hosiery and bows used to be very masculine clothing, but are not anymore.
When I wear lolita, I am modeling a classical idea of fine fashion, not so much the people who wore it. I am mildly bemused that women who wear lolita find so much consternation by the men who do so.
In short, I am mostly in the mind of >>10433505. I am not a cute girl, never will be nor desire to be one. I do, however, love fine dress, and lolita falls squarely in that.

The gender issue is a social thing that has been ingrained into us for so long, it's hard to accept anything outside it. I admit I have a hard time accepting as well but I try to keep an open mind about things as long as 1. It works and looks good 2. There's no underlying sexual reason for doing it, unless the thing is already sexual (like I'm not going to get upset over someone in bondage wearing bondage or w/e. )3. Not using it for ulterior motives (to gain access to certain groups just so you can take advantage of them.)

Boys can be pretty and girls can be handsome without needing to think they are the opposite sex.

I would think it's the opposite in the western world at least. It's generally okay for a girl to dress and do masculine things now. The only ones I can think of are masculine looking or musclar women are looked down on by both men and women. Actually though, in some groups too much feminity is looked down on as well. For instance black women are taught to be strong, sexy and dominant. Dressing girly and having a "submissive" appearance is seen as weak and "trying to be white." On the flip side, it's expected for white women to be more feminine as a way to be submissive to a man because "it's her place." rather than she just enjoys it. They get the tradfem hounds on them. It's all a mess really.

Men displaying feminine qualities though are likely to have the shit beat out of them or even killed by other men so I feel sorry for you guys on that part.

Yeeeaa it comes from a history of black people being taken advantage of, especially black women, so we've been brought up to be able to fight and defend ourselves. Not only that, but since in the past black women were also expected to do physical labor as well almost as much as the men were so you had to be tough. So nowadays a black woman not presenting herself as a "bad bitch" is looked down on by the black community but the opposite is looked down on by other communities. Thankfully this was slowly changing, but thanks to recent events I feel it may come up again.

Doesn't make it right that she was a bitch though. Hard-headed attitudes isn't good on anyone.

It's more about the history behind it and the overall. There's this sense of needing to be strong and powerful which is something that's not seen as much in other women of different races. It was calming down too, being a bit more normalized for black women not needing to be as agressive as before, but with recent happenings, this may change.

This shitty attitude is why genuine brolitas aren't accepted, not by virtue of simply being men. You look down on women in a woman dominated hobby. You think you're above it and that misogyny is why you're rejected.

I accept brolitas except these:
1. Ones with the above thought process
2. Ones who dress bad but expect praise just by virtue of being a man (ties in to the above)
3. Ones who do it to be edgy. Basically those who flaunt the shock value of having a beard and wearing a pink dress. It makes no sense to be in a feminine fashion and not look feminine. That doesn't mean "look like a woman" because there are masculine women. Feminine and woman are not synonymous. If you're not capturing a feminine aesthetic, you're doing it wrong. See point 2. >>10433466 is a good example of this

Basically, I hate anyone who thinks they get to play by different rules or get asspats for having a dick while wearing a dress.

>>10451319
lolita isn't empowering anyway. just because it's from a different time period and was attractive to men from a different time period doesn't mean it goes against gender roles or patriarchal standards of beauty, it just takes them from another time. hair removal has always been a part of beauty standards around the world anyways, be it eyebrows, legs, armpits whatever. leg hair removal became more widespread during ww2 because razors were cheaper than nylons which were meant to conceal the hair anyway, but it's not as if it was a new concept.

>> No.10451336

>>10451333
But what you said are patriarchal reasons. Men all over the world for ages want women with hairless skin and shame women who don't. Stockings create a smooth apperance. A woman having body hair is seen as unsexy, gross and even "not a real woman" when it shouldn't be. I mean, I still find it unappealing as well but I, like others, are culturally conditioned to think this.

As for lolita not being empowering, I beg to differ. It's hyper feminity that isn't sexualized in a age where sexualized fashion is the norm.

>>10451355
No, I'm basing it on biology. Women grow body hair naturally. We dislike it because of the cultural standard set up that attributes to attractiveness in our society. Women also can have strong jawlines, large muscles, even facial hair, all things that we would label as something only men should have when really both men and women have these features. This comes from what men desire and want in women despite these things being natural to them. It goes both ways. Patriarchy also demands men be a certain way as well and shame or even kill other men who don't follow these standards that have been set up by them. That's just how things are.

Back to the point, shaving body hair is is considered feminine because throughout the world, men say it is.

Shaving body hair is something that razor brands made up to sell more razors, but it isn’t representative of all markers of femininity.
Many so-called “girly” things, like needlework, fashion, cooking, and so on, were for centuries the only ways women had to express themselves and the only things they were allowed to create without fear of repercussions. For example, in some times and places women weren’t taught to read or write, but they could tell stories through weaving — hence the relationship between the words “text” and “textile.” Women have been allowed to create so little from at least the Bronze Age onwards, so I think it’s important to cherish and preserve everything they were able to make for themselves and I reflect that in my lifestyle, though I can also create and express myself pretty much however I want now. Besides, if it’s men who decided some things are “feminine,” it’s also men who decided that feminine things are weak and unworthy of attention, and I don’t care about their opinion.

>> No.10451402

>>10451399
this exactly. a lot of beauty standards were self imposed. upper class women made the trends and everyone else followed. whether those trends are based on patriarchy or male gaze isn't the point necessarily. women's fashion and male standards have so much overlap it's ridiculous to pick and choose.

>> No.10451440

You should make a proper poll for the body hair thing. I've seen it said countless times that women would prefer men also shave their leg hair. Opinions on bearded dudes seems to be split though.

imo, the thing I've noticed is the more high maintenance you look, it seems to be associated with being higher class, because these are all inconvenient things that lower/common people just don't have time for. So for eg:

- high heels: difficult to walk in, death on uneven ground. Means you always walk in well-maintained areas with flat ground

- Manicure: someone has to do your hands for you, and it's easy to damage your manicure if you do rough chores

So it follows that shaving your legs to look unnatural despite naturally growing body hair means you have the time and leisure to tend to your body hair. Similarly with dresses, the more ruffles, poof and the more effort it takes to create the fabric, the more time and labour that went into it, the more intricate it is, it looks more expensive and more high-maintenance, therefore you're a lady of luxury who has time to spend on things like this rather than toiling the fields or chopping chicken for dinner.

Similarly, on the other side, if you're a common person who has no time for this shit, it can be pretty nice to go for a massage or a manicure where someone bends themselves over to tend to *your* body, your needs, instead of having to care for yourself. Or to buy yourself an expensive dress full of ruffles because you worked hard and you want it.

I mean, if we go by "natural body produces hair so that's the natural beauty standard" then most of us wouldn't even bother with hair salons and nail parlours, we'd just walk around looking like (clean) shaggy monkeys with naturally broken long nails.

I agree that society views women breaking traditional gender roles as more acceptable than men doing so, but you are divorcing women from society there.
If you go hard against the norm, as in, crossdress, I'm sure you get shit from men for it, but if you step out of line in more slight, less (willingly or accidentally) provocative ways, my personal experience is that women take offence but men dont. For me, I can't remember a single time when a man has given me shit for having longer hair, which I saw as the only socially accepted avenue for self expression because I never had the balls to wear skirts and stuff, but women (or when I was a teen, girls and women) have been nagging me about it forever. It's really hard to say if one gender is more or less tolerant of breaking the rules, because we all like to imagine ourselves as openminded and like to project that onto our entire gender.
The danger that other men pose is vastly overstated and most women are not as open minded as we like to think. "Women are so tolerant and nice and let you do whatever" is itself a sexist stereotype.
Also I'd argue that we've largely done away with the idea of things being "masculine" at all, seeing it as sexist. Nobody in the west sees a girl in trousers and thinks "masculine".
And the "men are the oppressors by default" mindset get some women weirdly territorial about what they consider to be women's domain, and they don't want us encroaching on their space, regardless of whether that is even anywhere near our intention.

You sure have a lot of opinions for someone who hasn't even worn a skirt in public.

From my personal experience, women/girls are WAAAY more accepting of people subverting gender roles than men/boys. I've always been pretty effeminate, and I've worn girly clothes in public, and 99% of the shit I've gotten from childhood till now have been from men/boys. Most of women/girls are either indifferent or supportive. In fact I've made a lot of female friends because they found out that I was into makeup/sewing/kawaii stuff/shoujo manga/etc.
