Let's have another capsule wardrobe thread! Post capsules, request capsules, talk about capsules and so on.

Starting question - do you have a capsule wardrobe for lolita or another j-fashion style? If so, what makes it distinctly a capsule and not just a smaller sized wardrobe?

>> No.10438815

Love a capsule wardrobe for an old school look that features pink, blue, and white. I’m looking to expand my collection of old school pieces.

Im very partial to JSKs in particular, but OPs are fine. I don’t like skirts, so I would omit those desu

>> No.10438819

how many main piece does a capsule have?

>> No.10438821

>>10438819
I've seen people make capsules with only one main piece (as a fun challenge), but I think the cutoff is generally 4-6. So anywhere from 1-6

>> No.10438825

>>10438807
I think what makes it a capsule vs. just a small wardrobe is maximum versatility, in a capsule almost every piece should be able to be paired with every other piece in the other categories.
It can be useful to have multiple capsules for different styles or color schemes that would otherwise clash with the rest of the wardrobe too.

>> No.10439025

>>10439009

She’s good with the “wardrobe guide” part, such as sticking to substyles if you haven't got the hang of mixing.

Not so much with the whole point of a capsule wardrobe. Right off the bat she assumes it’s supposed to be a daily wardrobe and proceeds to pull number of items out of thin air, including handwaving the outers you’ll need.

When you make a capsule wardrobe you want to start by asking why you need these clothes. Where are you going? What event is it, what functions do you need to perform? What is the weather, how do you need to be dressed for all these things? Then work backwards to figure out how many dresses and what type they need to be, if you need raincoats or winter coats or snow boots or larger bags, or if you need all the sleeves and socks to be short for hot weather, and so on.

So, say you want to wear lolita to weekly meetups, which is a pretty common scenario especially for those girls who have a uniform while working. In this case what you actually need is a wardrobe full of “weekend statement” pieces, rather than the 7 daily outfits and 1 statement outfit she prescribes.
If you’d gone by fyeah’s numbers, you’d end up looking too casual for 7 meetups and then dazzlingly beautiful for only one single meetup, which is pretty pointless.

So basically just use the guide on building wardrobe, but totally disregard all of her numbers and what items she prescribes.

Oh wow I like this one because I have a similar colour scheme and main pieces.
I often feel like my wardrobe is inconsistent since it doesn't fit one particular substyle but when everything matches like this it really works out just fine!

>> No.10439226

>>10439040

Honestly, I don't. I only started wearing lolita dresses daily once I hit over 30 main pieces and it seemed like a waste to "save" them up for special occasions instead of wearing them whenever I feel like it.

But, I feel like you can use some criteria to cut down on what kind of dresses would work for daily wear, eg:

- First, you’ll want something simple to put on and easy to move in, because for sure you’ll end up running errands in them. So that rules out a lot of OTT dresses.

- Next, you want items that are easy to wash and care for, and will hold up to repeated washing. So screenprints, glitter, flocking and print taobao/indies are out, dresses with certain trim are also bad candidates.

- You’ll also want to consider the weather and type of material, eg thicker dresses and long sleeves if you live somewhere cold, vice versa for warm weather.

- For max versatility I’d also suggest looking into what the dresses look like without petti, in case you have a lazy day you aren’t stuck looking ita. Old school, btssb and tea length often works with low poof, flared skirts looks good even without a petti. Chiffon with border pint often looks like limp lettuce, avoid.

- If your ‘daily’ and ‘meetup’ wardrobes overlap, I’d also consider dresses you can both tone down and up, for eg IW dresses look almost normie but can easily look like a classy princess with the right accessories. Or AP and Meta often make dresses with detachable bits so you can take everything off and have a colourful simple dress, or put everything back on and look like an OTT princess. Gives you more use out of limited dresses.

- Personally I’d also consider pockets to be really important, or maybe that’s just me. You’re not stuck with solely AP either, other brands sometimes put in fully functional pockets in their designs, so you could target something like btssb heart pockets jsk, momoko’s tartan jsk, some of the Meta’s sailor series, whatever.

I have a sort-of capsule lolita wardrobe but seriously wonder what's the point of these hypothetical wardrobe collages? There's no way you'd actually be able to find all those pieces within a reasonable timeframe anyway.

>> No.10439278

>>10439271
>There's no way you'd actually be able to find all those pieces within a reasonable timeframe anyway.
What would you consider a reasonable timeframe?
I think it's a bit useless to add pieces that are extremely rare but in theory it's actually possible to work with these collages if you're strong-willed enough.
They're mostly made for inspiration though (+ they're fun to make).

>> No.10439279

>>10439271
They're just for fun, and to provide a reference point for you could buy. If I have a specific long-sleeve pink high neck sweet blouse in a capsule for example, I'm not going to pass on a similar one just because it isn't the exact one. It's just to provide an idea on what I should be shopping for.

>> No.10439331

>>10439271

You can pretty much set the parameter however you want, though. One of the previous threads someone made one where the items were available to buy at the time they made the collage, and I've seen other challenges which were "only currently available items on Wunderwelt".

You do have to flexible with these things, though, keep in mind there's things like clothes not fitting properly, or not sitting on you the way they do on the mannequin or not layering the way you imagined. I had a (nonlolita) wardrobe I planned out this way where all the tops didn't sit right and I had to replace them all with other similar tops, and I ended up with 3 pairs of shoes because I worried that the colour-matching would be off for two of them.

It's just a good way to see at a glance how cohesive the wardrobe is, or sometimes you start out with main pieces you already have and start thinking about what other items you can add to make even more versatile coords out of dresses you already own.

>> No.10439333

can someone share capsule wardrobe posts?

I do think it's nice to see what other people would add to pieces you already own. Of course it's not about the exact items in the collage but I've had black x black UTKs on my to buy list for like a year and still haven't found any when I was putting together orders, and that's a very generic item.

It's probably the under-knees part that's difficult to find. I feel like most of lolita has moved on to wearing overknee socks since like the last decade or so, so UTKs, especially lolita-specific lace-topped ones, would be much harder to find than OTKs.

If you're up for it it might be easier altogether to DIY them with some lace and normie UTKs.

I agree with >>10459196. Ankle socks are the most flatteringly on me. The key is to wear sheer nylons/stockings under them so your legs are smooth (old school photo shop). The ankle socks draw the eye to your ankles which is the smallest part of your legs. Crochet/knit solids are also good.

A capsule for late summer/early fall. Aka, 80% of my wardrobe is florals, but I want in on the autumnal mood... lower right shoes are aspirational at the moment but I'm strongly considering getting them.

>>10476655
Thank you! It's been a work in progress, but finally coming together :')

>>10476665
honestly, it works for me because my taste is pretty boring/subdued. I have a lot of patterned dresses, but otherwise am pretty conservative in terms of styling. This means I can mix and match pretty well as my bases tend to be a mix of solid colors (mostly white/off whites & ivorys/black, plus a small amount of red-pink range), with details on textures like lace or fabric types rather than prints or patterns, so most of them fit no matter what floral pattern I'm putting on top of it. And then just vintage or nice jewelry and a nice versatile bag rather than 15 different accessories.

But these capsules are all subsections of my larger wardrobe, I absolutely have a lot of random stuff that doesn't perfectly fit in with my main style. What worked for me in terms of directing myself was to ask myself 1) what do I love looking at/seeing other people wear 2) what of that do I think I would actually wear myself in a practical sense 3) what of the remainder I will look good in/pull off well. For me that's toned down classic. And then what I love of that is VM florals, so I started collecting those. I have a lot of colors & prints within that umbrella, but because my bases are more plain, I can take a handful of staple items + a couple dresses and usually be able to get several different outfits out of them. It also makes packing easier because I'm not planning entire coords days in advance.

>> No.10476747

>>10476665
this is >>10476744 continued. If you have a lot of prints that feel hard to match with each other, then a good way to start is to open your closet and think about what colors you see in your main pieces. Lavender? Navy? Pink? Pick 3 dresses that use a lot of that color. Then, pick a base color you have on hand (black, white, ivory, pink, whatever), and pull out all your blouses, legwear, accessories, and what have you in that color + the main piece color to test with the capsule. Every item should work with 2/3 dresses, and narrow it down to your favorite 2-3 of each (blouses, legs, headwear) + 1-2 bags and 2-3 pairs of shoes + a handful of other accessories. Next pick an accent color. If you can pick one that's present in your dresses as well (like lots of sweet uses sax or lavender, gothic might have red/blue/white), that's easiest. Add one item of the accent color to each category so you can mix & match it in.

Once you get the hang of tiny capsules it's easier to widen them by adding to what you've already figured out. Just keep repeating the process for different sets of dresses within your wardrobe and you'll begin to get a feel for where the holes are in terms of versatile items. For me I put together this one and was like wow, I have no bags that work with this. So that's next on the purchase list now. This is all subjective of course, just what works best for me.

More serious concrit, the oldschool Baby dress feels shoehorned since none of the legwear goes with it and the colour is so creamy. As well as the texture being so different from the more satiny drapey pieces. I would take it out and also replace the cotton blouse with something chiffon.

Lmao neither is twinkle sky tbf, I was trying to challenge myself a bit! I appreciate your advice about the colour of the baby dress though, potentially something like moitie’s juliet op would make more sense! The idea was just that I wanted the option to style iron cross in more oldschool styles (hence the rectangle headdress and cotton blouse) but then wanted to add another purely oldschool piece to the mix to make it make sense?

>tons of stuff that only go with certain parts of my wardrobe
well, yeah, then that's not a capsule. Having lots of versatile things that go with many items is a capsule, and when you get a lot of them, a full cohesive wardrobe, which was what the question was also about. I don't think having "only" one capsule of 5-6 dresses is really what most lolitas want. But, if you're struggling with liking a lot of different styles, having a capsule of each can help. Like, my wardrobe is 80% classic, but I have a small gothic capsule within it too, and the odd sweeter dress. If I really want a gothic dress but it doesn't fit with what else is in my capsule for it? Probably not a good investment, and something I should pass on. And capsules don't have to be end all be all goal of your wardrobe, they're a good way to think about what you own and wear.

I kind of get this, because I have a hanfu sub-sub-wardrobe.

- My main wardrobe consists of normie, lolita, hanfu, kimono and even a couple of specific ethnic outfits. It can't be a small capsule because I don't have the lifestyle that allows 24/7 lolita-kimono-hanfu lyfe (whatever that looks like), however, a lot of accessories can cross between them.

- My hanfu sub-wardrobe is almost entire BL fan-based and therefore is seperated into 3 distinct seperate sub-sub-wardrobes.

- The WWX sub-sub-wardrobe, in particular, consists of 4 tops, 2 pants, 1 skirt, 1 overskirt, 2 coats, accessories, 1 bag, 1 pair of shoes. Now here is where I start calling this a capsule, because this wardrobe is almost entirely self-contained and already has no space, so it needs to remain small. Not touching any other part of the rest of my wardrobe, I can easily pull 5-10 coords from this capsule, ranging from normal hanfu to fancy casual to overdressed fantasy person.

- To contrast with this, I also buy lolita sets, and by that i don't mean "kc+jsk". For Musee du Chocolat I have the dress, the skirt, the headbow and the minihat, the socks and the tights, the matching jewellery set, the bear bags. However, I can really only pull incomplete coords from this set, and furthermore they all look the same. So I never really acknowledge this as an actual capsule.

- If you really want a contrast with a non-capsule, my kimono wardrobe is mess as I only bought whatever was discounted/on sale and most of it only has one coord.

I think when it comes to lolita it's not really strange if someone wants to make an old-school sub-wardrobe capsule, and then have a seperate modern poly AP sub-wardrobe capsule, since the two styles look so different.

Anyway, the person who makes a lot of sub capsules probably means they have experience with making mistakes planning their wardrobe, so why not include their input, can't be worse than those making collages for the fun of it.

Has anyone ever gone from a bigger wardrobe to a capsule wardrobe? I own about 30 dresses and the biggest issue is I really love them all (mostly AP and some baby 2010-2016 releases, mix of prints and solids, but a lot are hard to find now). I used to own around 45 and sold a lot of them in the last year however I struggle to reduce further.

I wear sweet so for the most part my blouses/socks/accessories can be used interchangeably but I love the idea of having a smaller wardrobe... I just don't know how to further reduce when I am attached to the prints and solids I love. Am I just doomed unless I can finally part with more?
