As mori girl, dolly kei and the like haven't been popular enough lately to keep own threads alive, why not a general thread for all those natural vintage styles that often overlap to begin with.

hi newfag here. ive never been interested in buying lolita before but i have always wanted to have a ghostly, white aesthetic. ive never been able to achieve it because i cant seem to find what im picturing in my head, like functional flowy nightgown or muslin dress.
can you guys point me to what i might be looking for if this exists in Lolita fashion?
i might be into vintage-style sailor suits as well.
thanks in advance

I also think mori that borders on natural kei or lolita like >>10452954 and >>10453742
would look nice on curvy women. If you like the straighter silhouettes though, It can be really helpful to either do an empire waist look (ideally that shows some extra skin) in floaty/flowy fabrics. You can also avoid your waist altogether if you're sticking to structured fabrics that follow the lines of your body. Basically, your clothes don't have to emphasize your waist to look good, but they do have to acknowledge your figure. I'll post a mini-dump with some examples.

Not to sound like every unfashionable girl online, but maybe check out Kibbe types for a general idea of what will work for you.

you can get a pretty mori-inspired look with overalls, but you're right about the layering. i'd like to see a skirt salopette styled in a mori way. i think you could get more success that way.

I love overalls, they're so comfy and you can just coord them like a jumper skirt. Pic related is an outfit I wear a lot, but I love mixing and matching vintage + pink house sweaters and blouses with it.
The thrift stores where I live aren't that great, but they are mostly open, which is nice.

I like the loose and flowy feeling of fabric in mori, but how to avoid looking like a huge blob? It seems every time I'm wearing mori I'm scared to get my garments stuck in door handles or pointy stuff around or something.

Do you have specific areas of your outfit you're worried about? I've never had a scarf or bag get caught, but once every few years I'll somehow get a beltloop caught. If anything, getting my hair caught is the 'most common' problem.
Lolita's have much more potential for getting caught on something with all those ruffles and poof but seem to be more concerned with knocking things over. The mori style has less volume in comparison.
If something does get caught and rips, you could always embrace Wabi-Sabi.

I've always loved Mori but I'm having a hard time finding shops that aren't taobao (there's already a spreadsheet). Any more suggestions would be great!

It really wasn't, I finished and while it was a challenge, I didn't find it too difficult and learned lots along the way. Of course being my first completed piece it's a little bumpy, but I plan on trying again. I think what helped was practicing ahead of time before jumping in, watching videos to make sure I was doing it correctly, and being patient with the time it took for holding needles to feel comfortable in my hands. It's a fantastic couch hobby though I highly recommend it.

That pattern itself was just okay, the tapering around the shoulders weren't as ideal as I would have liked and the draping was stiff on the back with the centre taper pushing out, but I still need to block it. I found another pattern that I've had much better luck with that drapes much more beautifully, feels a bit more natural, and with wool yarn is crazy warm.

Why do people say that dolly kei is comparatively hard to pull off? I'd think that a fashion that's as nebulous as dolly would be best to find a style that flatters your face and body type. Is it just because the pieces are so busy and intricate?

A lot of it is vintage secondhand stuff that's mashed together in an interesting look. You kind of need an eye for colour and fashion and knowing what works on your body type (and general mashing) or else you really will look like you just rolled around in goodwill and wore whatever stuck to you.

Like the dude on the right and the girl in the middle left in this collage would look like a homeless woman and a beer-stained hippie respectively, if they weren't good-looking, well groomed and skinny.

>> No.10497119

>>10496743

Well-groomed and clean is dubious, cgl has its share of basement dwellers. Particularly since a lot of folks seem to have gotten lazy after lockdown.

Anyway I was going to point out there's still a lot of room for mistakes in coordinating random secondhand things, since a lot of pieces were made for different styles and don't necessarily look good together.

To be really fair though, almost anything will look harder next to lolita, lolita has so many rules and guidelines that practically teaches you how to dress up, matching sets if you still can't into coordinating, and community if you need feedback before you buy something.

On the upside, since a lot of it is vintage western clothes, so with covid messing up international shipping if you have a decent secondhand shop in your area, it's probably one of the more accessible jfashions right now.

>> No.10497195

>>10497119
I wish it was more accessible, haha. I live in bumfuck nowhere, USA, and none of the stores in my area have any good vintage clothes, so I've been poking around the secondhand Japanese market and at some modern j-fashion brands for pieces that fit the aesthetic. I've found some really cool accessories in secondhand stores in my area, but not really any main pieces that I like. It's definitely way more effort than building up my lolita wardrobe when I first started that, but also really fun scouring through antique stores.
