What is the average time you can wear actual full plate armor at a con before giving up and taking it off or collapsing from exhaustion?

>> No.10682178

I’ve done a 6 hour session in Monster Hunter Gear and a full 8 hours in tactical / military garbs from rainbow six siege before passing out in the hotel room.

I've seen larpers in chainmail and larpers in plate get their kit on at 8am and not take it off until 3am only to go to bed and do it again the next day.

If you're having trouble because it's your first time, skimp on padding. You're not fighting anyway, and it's the insulation that kills you. Just wear something to make sure you don't scratch your skin up too much or get your hair caught in the chain. Try to get a helmet that allows for proper breathing.

Depends on the temperature

Depends on if you've built up sweat at any point since putting the thing on. If you're inside an air-conditioned con center the entire time you could feasibly wear it the entire day provided you vent high contact areas for a few seconds every hour or so, I've done it without issue. However if you spend more than a couple of minutes outside and it's not winter then you'll need to swap out your inner wear and let some pieces rest for an hour or else your shirt will probably take on one or two pounds from accumulated sweat alone or you'll dehydrate.

Also depends on the armor. Plastic plate armor is light, but in insulates heat. Actual steel armor is much heavier, but it also works as a heatsink.
Also, it's usually not that heavy. Modern bodyarmor usually weighs the same.

If you mean actual steel, all day? It's not that bad, just takes some getting used to

This anon is right, Actual metal will work as a heat sink allowing you to wear chain mail all day without overheating. EVA foam armor (or any thermoplastic for that matter) doesn't breathe and will cause a problem with extended wear. Treat it like a fursuit. 30 mins on your first trial, if you're feeling OK, keep going. I have an armor set that I can wear for 6 hours no problem but another that has a 60 minute time cap before I start sweating like a faucet.

Wandered in from the larp thread, but my max is around five hours in plate, fighting, with no water.

At a con? You should be able to wear it until you need to take it off to sleep/shower/ECT. If you can't, something is probably wrong.
