is it horrible for me as a newlita to start out with taobao to start building up a wardrobe/understand basic coording, or should i just save up for AP and other burando and have less of a wardrobe?

>> No.10691433

>>10691431
When I first started, my main pieces were taobao, and they were "whatever." Once I got my first AP dress it blew my mind. I'd say make a small brand capsule wardrobe. If you end up not liking/not fitting them or your tastes change, you'll have a much easier time selling them also.

>> No.10691436

>>10691431
It’s better to have 1 good coord that you can wear instead of a big wardrobe of crap that you’ll end up throwing out eventually, because it’s crap.
You won’t be able to tell what is decent taobao and you’ll look horrible or end up getting ripped off if you don’t know how to use taobao. And don’t buy from taobao resellers, because it ends up being the same price as secondhand brand, and you will get ripped off and/or wait 8 months to receive stuff.
Secondhand brand is cheap and you can basically resell it for what you paid for, if you end up not liking it.

>> No.10691439

>>10691431
I’d say buy what you actually like instead of trying to fill your wardrobe quickly with mediocre items. Accessories and shoes from taobao are fine imo if chosen thoughtfully. But if you own brand you really see the difference and it’s hard to settle for less after that. Even taobao costs add up after SS and shipping fees. If you’re smart about hunting secondhand sites you can actually get brand affordably.

>> No.10691440

>>10691431
I'd start out with a few brand pieces and use taobao for your accessories, blouses, shoes etc. There's a lot of shit taobao main pieces out there and sometimes it's hard for newbies to find the good stuff. I started with a tiny wardrobe and I still love the burando newlita me picked out but I kind of regret all the taobao I bought because it seems so cheap/ugly in comparison.

I think it depends on your fashion 'skills'. (ex; do you have a lot of practice buying clothes online, and evaluating how those pieces will fit YOU based on model pics and listed measurements? do you already participate in some other alt fashion or j-fash? how well can you judge quality of construction and materials looking at shooped taobao stock pics? etc. etc.)

I bought a lot of taobao and western indie basics when I first started out, with the plan that I would invest in brand pieces later. But it wound up being mostly junk. I don't regret wasting the money bc I learned a lot from it, but it was a major waste that not everyone can afford. After SS fees taobao isn't much cheaper than brand, AND it's much slower to arrive. By the time I'd get things like a crappy taobao blouse order, I could have found better items on LM or just buying new from a brand.

Another aspect that I realized was that because brand is better quality, it is also easier to wear in normie outfits. Like you can 100% style most brand in a normie fashion and it comes across as a quirky designer clothes. This is vs taobao which usually looks more cheap or costumey.

I think the best approach for beginners is to stick to brand but start with a small capsule. Only buy what you really love, and build a wardrobe gradually over time. And don't fall into the trap of spending lots of $$$ on cheap accessories like socks or jewelry, because those items will drag down your whole outfit and also fall apart more easily.

does anyone else feel they look frumpy in lolita compared to their normie clothing? I love my coords, but my motivation is waning because I look so much better in lacy normie dresses with no poof. When I’m wearing lolita, it looks like I’m a child wearing my mom’s dresses? Like there’s too much cloth and my body gets drowned beneath it all. The few dresses that look good are long sleeve, low frill, button down OPs. Is there a certain body type for lolita? I’m a short, thin rectangle and feel like crap in a JSK+blouse

>> No.10691742

If you are too short lolita makes you look stumpy. This is my personal opinion and aesthetic, but it sounds like you agree with it in general. I think 5'4" is the sweet spot and the shorter you are the more you have to fight not to look childlike.

>> No.10691777

>>10691758
>>10691740

Hard agree. Once you're very short you'll never have the issue of being too tall for a specific piece of course, but many items start hitting at not quiiiite the right spot at this point. Since the lolita silhouette is already quite fussy in itself small mismatches in proportions throw the whole look off. I'm 5' tall and look pretty decent in OPs but the jsk + blouse combo makes me look like I'm drowning in fabric (I'm a normal weight for my height, not super thin either).
>>10691740 if I were you I would look out for jsks that are shorter than normal. What style do you usually wear? I can tell you what I found out looks good on me through trial and error.

>> No.10691788

Unless they're intentionally longer cuts from brands much lolita is totally fine on shorter girls. Its a fashion made primarily for young women in Japan where average height for even adult women is around 5ft. Some cuts may be more flattering on some people's specific body types and long cuts can be overwhelming on shorter people depending on the style you prefer but to say lolita becomes unflattering if you're short is the dumbest newb shit I've ever heard in my life. Obviously you'll have an easier time in old school or older sweet finding good lengths on things if you're petite but to say that the fashion is somehow harder to wear when you're short is a ridiculous stretch.

>> No.10691795

>>10691788
It's fine yeah, but I would honestly say that being a little bit above 5' looks better with most dresses. I'm guessing that what anon was trying to say is that you always hear from girls despairing over being too tall for things so it makes you think that there's no way to be "too short" for a specific piece or coord.

>> No.10691797

>>10691742
I mainly wear sweet. Closet has AP sweet prints from early-mid 2010s, and Meta. The meta prints are very toned-down, and I think they look good on me. The AP OPs with rectangle necklines can be kinda hidden by a cardigan and look ok. But the JSKs just make me look frumpy. It’s like there’s too much going on in the neck area with the lace from the blouses and lace from the dress. I look exceptionally bad in a jsk + low Peter Pan collar + short or puffed sleeves. It makes me look like a living doll, in a dangerous sense. I’ll get a cutsew and see if that’s any better

>>10691758
I’m inclined to agree with you. I’m 5’0” and thought my height would be a boon, but it’s been a constant struggle to strike a balance between the sweet elegance that drew me to the fashion, and the fact I kinda look like a child. I hear tall lolitas have it rougher, though

The sad part is I really like sweet motifs.

Agree with everything here! OPs look pretty decent, but it’s the JSK blouse combo that make the neck and bodice area look overwhelming, I guess? The jsk by itself is a little overwhelming at times if it’s an all-over print, but border prints are a little more manageable. It’s weird because I can wear tealength floral prints in normie fashion. It might be the double whammy of poof and loud patterns

I suffer from this too. I’m glad I’m not the only one, everyone seems to prefer jsks. I think because I have really narrow shoulders and a small head? I’m not particularly skinny anymore, I just have small bone structure. The jsk blouse combo eats me alive. Peter Pan collar/puff sleeves is particularly bad for me too, my head looks too small or something.

Just got my pair in, following up on this. So the color is actually more of an ivory (which I needed, and it's nice) and I ordered these through clobba because I had another order open at the time. My pair was made with 0.5cm added to all straps because I have high arches and I wanted enough room to wear a range of socks with it.

Good points:
- The pleather used is pretty soft and it's not stiff on the leg at all
- Zipper is extremely solid
- Relatively comfortable for its height, could probably be better with a comfort insole
- Fits my somewhat wide feet nicely at my normal shoe size
- Construction's somewhere between sosic and iris corolla

Could be better:
- The middle two straps are bigger on my leg because of the extra cm. Not a dealbreaker, but I did try to ask if the additional cm could only be applied to one or two straps but it's an all or nothing situation.

The additional cm is great for my foot and for the top strap being comfortable but yeah, it's otherwise made for a foot and leg that doesn't really have much change in overall width. I don't regret getting them but I'd highly recommend carefully measuring your foot and leg to determine if extra length is needed on the straps or not for your foot size.

do a spot test in water first. But it shouldn’t bleed or give you issues unless you have red in the print (red can bleed easily for older prints)

Am I about to get scammed?
I just sold a jsk on lacemarket. Everything was going well until the buyer paid the invoice. They're located in China and the address they gave me is different from name and address on their paypal, the invoice was also paid by an email which was not the email I sent the invoice to. The buyer also asked me to mark the cost of the item down to avoid customs.
I haven't shipped out the package yet. Am I just reading too much into this or is something fishy?

Only ship to the address on the paypal or they can file a claim saying you never shipped the item. Read the LM rules anon. Refund the buyer and tell them it needs to be the same paypal address.
For international shipping sometimes the address doesn’t show up on paypal, but it shouldn’t be a different address.

you can wear them for sweet lolita just fine. OTT is a different story. if you're going for OTT then you probably need more over the top shoes with more elements.

But seriously, there's nothing wrong with these for sweet lolita. I'm tired of the distortion from what the genre is. Sweet lolita and classic are relatively close in the ball park. (Innocent World comes to mind) OTT is something entirely different.

Old school is just sweet lolita with you guys slapping a hype label on it.

It's definitely not a replica from Oojia, as I used to own a few back when she was active. The seller I bought CBB from said she got it secondhand from Mercari. The bows are crisp, the various lace details are correct in their proper areas, and the built in petticoat and overall shape of the jsk feels right. I wasn't sure if there's a possibility that they made and sold sample pieces back in 2009 that might've used leftover tags (and not have a care tag). I haven't had any experiences with AP's sample pieces.. only seen a few sample tags from Japanese secondhand sites.

Usually the zipper may be getting caught in the fabric of the zipper tape where you can't see. This has happened to me a lot with invisible zippers on things that definitely fit. I hate how flimsy and fucky invisible zips are but if your item is well cared for and you are gentle with it it should be okay. Having to pull the zip at an angle (like you may be doing when you don't have help) can worsen it since the pointy bit getting caught is turned sideways into the fabric and stabbing into it or scratching at it, rather than straight down the tubes of fabric around it. If it's already sticking and it is that issue, try to have the zipper replaced.

Well, there’s krad lanrete who seems to be good enough that they even did a collab with moi meme moitie. And wunderwelt stocks them. I just bought something from them so we’ll see if they’re truly up to par. But i do think it’s just them for possibly being a good brand from china

>> No.10697723

is there any reason why moi meme moitie is so expensive compared to other brands? i would love to own something of theirs but i can't justify the sky high price for something so relatively plain. other brands at least have unique prints that can't be easily replicated. is it just because it's founded by a celebrity? or do they just do it because they know some people are crazy/rich enough to go for it?

>> No.10697725

>>10697723
Kinda.
New moi meme moitie is kind of ass and they’re coasting (the brand got acquired by another company who is running the quality to shit) and the musician part of the brand always appeals to people. They know there isn’t competition, plus the nostalgia part of it. so they make it so expensive when it kinda looks like baggy shit.
Old mmm if you can find it, is sturdy and the cuts look amazing in real life when you put them on. Yes they are plain. but there isn’t an equivalent for that kind of cut and style. If you like it, then be prepared to pay out the ass.
Black peace now has some similar pieces though for much cheaper secondhand and sometimes miho matsuda has things too, both cheaper than current mmm

Are you a sweet lolita? Prints arent the only thing that is in a dress that makes it worth a price. Its the fabric, the design and the details. Things like tailoring arent flashy but is costly.

The base price is higher, usually the quality of the poly is much higher. I know ppl hate on poly here but what ap use and what moitie use is very different. They do make custom lace for all their things, its one of their main points.

Obviously some people are in for it because its mana, you cant divorce him from the brand's look but the idea of you are paying for just the name is overstated a lot by people who just dont know fashion enough to get the subtle things.

That genuinely LOOKS like clolita. Those bottom ruffles have never looked good and along with it being like a trademark of clolita. Also having those lazy poof sleeves or shoulderless tops. Like what really makes this brand stand out? Look at japanese brands, they all have a trademark style. All clolita copies each other, does the same patterns, they all look the same and the prints and patterns are usually cluster fucked. Bad color palette choice, etc.

>> No.10697742

>>10697736
yeah it's the washed out colors, off the shoulder sleeves, boring as fuck bodice, and ugly bottom lace for me. look at this and tell me you could coord it with anything else except what's in this set? it's just hideous. all clolita feels like shitty halloween costumes, and this one is no different.

>> No.10697747

>>10697742
Yeah, I will never understand why they always do these ugly colors. Like it's pretty obviously not cute and could be easily changed

Thanks guys it helps me with my taste radar. It makes sense and i always did think the gloves look like shit. And the sleeves are strange too.
So i actually already bought picrel for casual wear . and i don’t think this one looks bad IF i toss the waist ribbon, replace with a black one and the straps with black ones too.
I like the goth jesus print that’s all. Or is my taste still bad even with those changes haha

WW and MMM are under Tanaqro, a Chinese owned company. Of course they stock some Chinese brands.

i wouldn't say so, i'm just a beginner lolita lol. i like looking at a lot of ap's sweet prints but i don't think i'll ever own or wear any myself if that makes any sense. i can only justify spending hundreds of dollars on a dress that i can actually see myself wearing and enjoying. personally i would like to wear classic or gothic the most

i don't know if i'm just not well versed enough in fashion to tell how well made something is through the typical stock photos that brands provide, and i've never been able to see or feel something from mmm in real life yet. i really wish i could actually go to their stores and see their products irl.

Every single krad lanrete dress I've seen has been lazily constructed, busy, fugly, textbook clolita.

>> No.10697852

>>10697849
Goes to show that the majority of people defending clolita on here are probably just newbs or strictly only buy clolita.

I don't know why we ever really slacked on quality like this, because even in the early days of clolita becoming available people were praising the quality and they all still had SERIOUS QA issues. But there were some 'good' things and it was cheap.

Now it's not cheap.

Krad Lanrete has several prints I love and own, but they'd all be better as like wall posters or something. The actual garments are crap and the prints are too busy to look good, just like most clolita.

Something black with pastel pink or lavender i think?

why not just look for any ap sweet print in black? obviously it wont match perfectly but if you're only looking for a black headpiece with pastels mixed in, i can only imagine headbows for that. Unless ur fine with some cheap accessorized headband from taobao or aliexpress, though im sure its still okay as long as it color matches

when wearing a graphic t-shirt with a pleated skirt.

larger shirt or smaller?

>> No.10698795

>>10698735
usually I’d go with larger. most pleated skirts are short and fitted at the waist so it “balances out” the outfit to wear a looser fitting top. or if i wear a tight top then i wear a loose fitting cardigan or hoodie over.
