girls that cosplay girls - do you ever deal with people calling you a trap or telling you that you look like a guy? never in my life before entering the cosplay community have I ever been called a guy. i want to say that I’m fairly attractive, work hard daily to stay fit and have a curvy body and butt though i’ll admit my tits can be considered smallish at a size C I guess. anyways, ever since I started cosplaying I keep having people comment on my photos that I must be a trap and that I look like a guy. I get so confused by this every time trying to figure out what it is that makes people think I’m a guy/look like one? I even stopped cosplaying girls and started crossplaying as male characters for a while because it started making me feel insecure. Now I finally gained confidence again to try and cosplay a female character, and bam. I get some nice comments, but here come the “trap lul” comments and I’ve even had some comments telling me I look like fucking Dwayne Johnson when he’s a whole completely different shade and race than me. I honestly can’t tell whether they’re just trolling and this is a common thing to call someone cosplaying an anime girl a trap or if I legitimately look like a guy? I don’t know what to do. It’s bumming me out. I’ve learned and practiced different makeup styles for my female characters, but no I still get the guy comments. I feel really depressed over this and am tempted to just sell all my female cosplays and never cosplay a female character again. It’s messing with me so much that I’m even starting to wonder if I look like a guy out of cosplay too. My friends and people who know who I look like also get confused and tell me I look nothing like a guy. Anyways yeah just wondering if anyone else has dealt with this and/or can anyone give me advice on how not to let comments like this get to me. I’d really appreciate it.

I mean you describe how feminine and curvy your body is, but any trap can watch rupaul’s dragrace and learn how to make a curvy body. It’s probably something to do with your facial features. You say people tell you that you look like the rock, then the only thing you say to deny it is that you don’t have the same skin tone. Like honey that had nothing to do with skin tone and everything to do with facial features

Also what types of characters are you usually cosplaying? Maybe you can’t do cutesy type anime girls, but you’d be better suited for more mature/refined female characters? You could also lean into it and just cosplay more butch/masc women

I'm not reading all that but here are some of the things that might contribute to making you look like a troon:

1. Straight eyebrows with no arch. Yes, it's a current trend in Asia, but men naturally have straight brows far more than women. As such, arched, natural-looking eyebrows are proven to be seen as more feminine.
2. Makeup overkill. This includes eyebrows. Don't go overboard with the contouring or you'll look like you're trying too hard to be a woman.
3. Wigs, especially bad wigs. Traps and drag queens rarely have naturally long hair. If you go without a wig, fewer people will assume you're male.
4. Obviously fake boobs. For obvious reasons.
5. Being really muscular, or really fat.

None of these will necessarily make you look male on their own, and maybe not together either. BUT they can definitely contribute to it and if your goal is to appear undoubtedly female, I'd avoid them.

This is absolutely shit advice. A wig will always look better in cosplay unless the character is bald/shaved head/undercut

stop sperging. this isn't about the ideal cosplay, it's about toning down the troon look which OP is concerned about. there are plenty of characters who have generic long straight hair with bangs, which don't require a wig. if you know how to style hair even halfway decently, a wig would not at all be necessary for that hairstyle.

90% of con wigs look like shit anyway, so if you're a poorfag then your actual hair can often look better for characters with natural hairstyles. just look at picrel. mars, venus, and jupiter would look way better if they had naturally long hair in the correct color instead of that garbage on their heads.

It's a classic thing for cosplay women to call someone they're jealous of a man.
But also, if you learned your makeup from watching youtube tutorials or tiktok you might be inadvertently emulating the drag queen styles of makeup.

Also I would say avoid posting selfies. phone cameras are NOT good enough to adjust for lens distortion and so it might make some features look strange, and not like yourself. If you only have a phone, use a selfie stick, and crop it later. The closer to the camera you are, the stranger you will look.

In person, try focusing on your posture. Keep your spine upright, neck elongated, and when you stand still, make sure your feet are splayed outward.

We live in a society that really hated on women if they weren't extremely feminine, or extremely anti-feminine for the last 20 years, so it's unfortunate but a lot of young girls never really learned what makes them girly in the way previous generations did.
They were either supposed to be like Kim Kardashian or Miley Cyrus and not much between

Hard to say because I don't know what you look like but alongside anime coomers just memeing, MtF trannies are known to actively claim cutesy, non-curvy biological women are trans as a psyop tactic, so I wouldn't feel too bad about it. They did it to Anzujaamu and Tsuruko and there's nothing masculine about either of them.

Thank you anon, this is actually great advice and I definitely do notice that my features do look unlike me when I take selfies versus if the picture is taken a bit further. I notice the closer I take pictures the longer my face looks which might make it look masculine. I have had people tell me that I’m not photogenic and look better in person. I never thought much about lens distortion. And I definitely do pose very awkwardly when I cosplay females so I need to do some studying on posing for sure. I’ll try my best to try again and if I just can’t seem to pull cute anime girls off then at least I know I can pull guys off lol…

if we're just talking /cgl/, it's like a past time here to call people a trap. Idk if it's mostly people trolling, or genuinely thinking any woman that doesn't have 100% super soft adorable features must be a man, or a mix. I wear jfash more often than I cosplay, but saying someone is a man is a go to insult/favoured rumour mongering tactic. It's not even like people are calling only women with sharper features or broader shoulders a man, perfectly normal feminine women get called that too.

I'm fairly flat chested and have muscular calves, so you can bet I've been called a man here multiple times. At first it was jarring but I've stopped paying attention to it, it's really obvious I am not in fact a man if you meet me in person. ffs, I've seen people call Fanny Rosie and Enji Night "a man", it that isn't trolling and/or jealously idk what is. Don't even worry about it, just ignore the comments.

Honestly you have a point, I used to look at all the shooped women so much and once I started paying attention to real women I noticed that a good 90% of them could be considered “guys” or not womanly enough compared to how shooped girls tend to get online. It’s not bad to use filters but it’d be a lie to say that filters don’t distort people’s perception on things, I mean there are actual studies out there about how shooping affects people. I’m not talking about just some skin smoothing and touch ups either, I’m talking about the full on shooping we see a lot in the cosplay community where the person almost completely changes their features.

Except photoshop is a big reason why people develop, for example, eating disorders and such. General public, models, celebrities being edited to have tiny illogical waists and even celebrities with plastic surgery still use photoshop too, like the Kardashians, to make their body even more unattainable in reality. It affects other people too. For you to say photoshop doesn’t affect other people means you’re far too down the rabbit hole. Does everyone use some form of it? Probably. Is it bad to use it? No, but you have to acknowledge the effects it can have. There are tons of studies out there that you can check out.

Lol wtf kind of logic is this? If I wanted or needed to photoshop my pictures there's nothing stopping me from doing that. I'm not "reeing" about photoshop either by stating that this girl in question is using minimal filters (looks like some skin smoothing going on) compared to most cosplayers and social media influencers in general. And yes, doctoring photos has always existed to varying degrees, but the technology has advanced significantly in the past 10 years or so and many people are only just now realizing that body/face warping filters can be used on video as well. The problem is that people are addicted to social media and as a result their brain becomes accustomed to these overly perfect, uncanny representations of women. But way to shift the conversation from "It's pretty cringe to make fun of a perfectly normal looking 13 year old girl's appearance as an adult" to strawmanning about photoshop or whatever the hell you're going on about.
