Can we have a lolita-inspired but more subdued clothes thread? I wear lolita on weekends but I'm looking for more toned down clothes for everyday, preferably in classic style. I was hoping to find some cute A-line skirts in the shops where I live, but this season it's all either too short (over the knee) or pencil shape. I'm a pear shape with small chest, defined waist but fat hips, so I'm looking for something more flattering. I like IW skirts especially, but I'm average to chubby with a 28" waist so a ot of their skirts would be too tight on me. Any recommendations from any of you who wear classic / loli-inspired everyday styles? It could be lolita, non-lolita, offbrand, taobao, anything!

Otome isn't classic, I had a slip of the keyboard there. This is indeed about style, and that style is classic. It's really not a difficult concept. The style she was describing is EXACTLY classic. Adding another term instead of using established terms merely serves to obfuscate what we're talking about. (And although it's certainly not necessary, most lolitas do specialize somewhat. I can't imagine the closet you'd need to be able to switch between gothic, classic, sweet, etc.)

Not really. There's nothing 'simple' about dolly kei, which is supposed to be elaborate with lots of jewelry and odd, vintage pieces layered on top of each other. Otome isn't poofy. Old school lolita isn't about modern headpieces; it's big and frilly and almost gaudy by current standards.
The only thing that actually fits her description is classic. What she is describing is classic lolita. It's really not that catastrophic to admit.

Having been in lolita for about a decade. Sorry, lolita has rules -- fairly rigid ones. Its styles are defined; its designs have a uniformity to them. Lolita is a very structured fashion. That's part of its whole appeal. Not that you can't explore within the rules, but it's their presence that makes the exploration so interesting.

It's true I didn't know how far back straw hats went, I think of menswear hats for women as a very modern phenomena, something that has nothing to do with the ultra-frilly, feminine, and older (chronologically) look of old school lolita. But this is really moot, because if you assume I'm saying all of these things that I'm not saying, there's no discussion; you're having both sides of the debate with yourself. But if you're trying to argue that berets, straw hats, and felted hats, you're on a fool's errand, because we both (hopefully) know that it was completely dominated by headdresses and bonnets. Probably because most of us realize now that country is just classic or sweet with a straw hat, and maybe a woven purse. and I mean, its still that way. if you go through the country tag on DL you're still gonna see alot of just classic and sweet with a straw hat, but I think most realize that a straw hat does not a brand new categorization make (or at least here in the west?), so we just call it sweet or classic, with or without the straw hat, because honestly it really is.

specially since straw hats hit the mainstream, its no longer seen a a "country girl" accessory in anyone eyes, its just a nice look for summer.
