2008- First "homemade" costume (except for the sweater), still no wig and got a decent photo
2012- One of my favourite costumes, completely handmade with very minimal help, then touched up again earlier this year. Lost some weight, put on some makeup. And I learned how to use wigs.

The suits on the cape? I used print out Iron on transfers, which I would NOT RECOMMEND because the backs of them heat up and then they stick to whatever surface you're ironing on.

What I would recommend are freezer paper stencils and fabric paint! VERY crisp results, and it's super easy to do.

I feel like that's part of the improvement, since actual sewing/prop skills are much harder to detect from just a picture. Unless you were to re-do the same costume, then you can see improvement in shape, color choices, finished edges, and fit. But since not everyone re-makes old costumes that they've already done, most people just go with pictures that have other elements like you mentioned.

I found a Yomi that year, which was awesome. We gushed at each other, but didn't find any other YYHers.

I want pictures of your Touya! Team Mashou has always been one of my favorites (though Team Rokuyokai beats them out cause of Chuu and Rinku).

2009: VK store bought, Sakura...first thing I've ever made. I have no idea why I decided to try to make that as my first handmade cosplay. No makeup, first time trying a wig.

2011/12: Made with sweat and tears and just a little blood. Still have a long way to go, but I'm excited to do it! Learned to makeup, sew a bit better, fabric paint, those wings, etc.

The only improvement I've made is in how well I can put two pieces of fabric together and keep them together. I guess I'm getting more adventurous with what I do. I'm curently working on Terra Branford, and am going all out with trying new things, like emboidery and beading.
First image is not my first cosplay, but the first one I put in a large contribution for. My mum did a lot of the sewing when I first started, but I did about 80% of this one. Used my own hair and edited clothes.
Second image is the recent cosplay I'm most proud of and took the most effort. I've lost a bit of weight since then, have started using (and styling) good wigs, and am branching out with tools and techniques.

I think the only improvement have is better posing and going to photoshoots. I knew how to sew when I was younger, I was just lazy and bought my cosplays.

Comparison of 2008 when I first started sewing/cosplaying and earlier this year.

2008:
Had no idea how to sew anything other than a straight line, thought bias tape was the best way to fudge seams that I didn't how how to really sew, didn't know how to modify patterns for accuracy, not very good with posing, make up or finding a photographer.

2012: embroidery, beading, gradient dyeing, modifying and creating my own patterns, not using my real hair for a costume, and learning how to do better make up, actually getting decent photos of my costumes.

First con in 2007 I went as Chii, no make up, bad wig, first time ever using a sewing machine and making something

In 2011 I made my Princess Serenade, styled the wig myself, made everything from scratch, ended up winning a prize in the competition

I'm still nowhere near as good as I'd like to be but I'm pretty pleased with my progress over the past few years!

2005: Unstyled hair, horrible choice of cosplay, unflattering costume, not well made no make-up, sewed together in a hurry, pink and white are actually dyed bedsheets.
2012: Took 550 hours of time into the costume, used a corset to flatter better, still my real hair for this costume since the dress sapped my funds, but styled. Discovered the world of fake lashes, spent more time picking out quality fabrics and lace. Overall better sewing and construction of the garment.

No wigs, all store bought costumes with no effort, lots of closet cosplay. Only thing close to good is Zoey. I tried sewing all of Sawyers stuff and failed miserably.

2010: Poison Ivy from Batman, Emily from air Gear, Rena from Higurashi, Noodle from Gorillaz, Meryl from Metal Gear Solid
Began using wigs and makeup, finally started sewing more. Noodle was my first time fully making a cosplay [aside from the stockings] and I bought Rena but took it in majorly. Meryl was a quick closet cosplay to complete a group, but I do love her character.

2011: Heather from Silent Hill 3, Gumi from the Matryoshka video.
Finally started sewing more, heavily modified both the skirt and vest for heather as well as modifying the boots. Hoodie was bought and altered for Gumi as well as sewing the skirt and making the headband. Got caught up in school and barely did any cosplay things.

2012: Rainbow Dash from MLP and Korra from Legend of Korra
Never really watched MLP, did it for a friend since they needed a dash. Hand dyed the wig and created the shirt by sewing on the symbol. Used a pair of biking shorts for the bottoms.
Korra is the first costume I did absolutely everything for. Sewed it all and styled the wig on my own. Need to remake a bunch of things but overall proud of it. [Also did not brownface before anyone says anything. Italian and turn pretty dark in the summer. It's just my natural skin color along with some contouring with bronzer.]

I'm really excited to get better with the new costumes I'm doing.
