Anyone have a tutorial on making plushes in a style similar to this one?
I'm mostly stuck on how to make the head so round without having seams all over the place.
I've always wanted one, but the girl who makes them went backpacking and seems to have never returned, so I want to try to make one myself.

I'm guessing the head has a lot of seams, but they're hidden by the fluffiness of the fabric. If you look really closely at the top, you can see sort of an "x" mark.

Here's a non-fluffy one.
There aren't very many close-ups of them but the only seam i see is the one at the side of the head where the stripes fold in.

I made my own stuffed Gunter just for fun a while back. Of course, I didn't make a pattern because I was lazy.
But he's just a rounded cylinder with some accessories, so I made another one and actually made a pattern for you seagulls.
This is what he looks like finished. It could come out better or worse depending on how well you line up the eyes and nose, really.

I have a 2d drawing of what I want, but trying to get it into a 3d shape is performing to be quite difficult. I'm trying to make a 'muzzle' on my bear. Should I just make two pieces the same shape and stuff it?

I start off with sketches of all the parts I have to consider, so head, body, limbs, etc.

I tend to take basic patterns of balls (like 4 "leaves" or 2 parts of a baseball, which is a friggin godsend to me) and other shapes (ie. cubes, pyramids, etc.), and go off from there. Drafting and redrafting patterns till I get it right. It helps to have scrap fabric to test the pattern out so you know what to adjust for the final plushie.

I've seen a method with masking tape and newspaper, or lots of foam. I haven't tried that myself, so I wonder how easy it is to draft patterns that way. Also reminds me, there was that Japanese plushie pattern program a while back, I think it was still in works because there were some kinks. I really liked what they had going, is there anyone who uses/used it before?

>I'm trying to make a 'muzzle' on my bear. Should I just make two pieces the same shape and stuff it?
It's hard to tell how you want it to look like when we only see the front view of it. A sideview would be helpful, but otherwise try out your idea and see if it's close to your liking. Pattern making takes a bit of trial and error.

>>6467351
I wish there was a pattern for this or something close. I'll have to wait for Easter to come around again since I missed out on buying these very cute ram plushies. It reminded me of the alpacas except the rams had no "neck", smaller feet, and horns. Sometimes I consider buying plushies to seam-rip up so I can see how the patterns look...

Good luck on yours! Draw all the sides views, and I'm sure there are some patterns for teddy bears out there that you can look at that may have that 3 parts to the front.

If at all possible, look at the color of the fabric you are going to buy on two different display screens. A lot of the time, having a fabric's color differ from what you see on the website has to do with the display settings of the screen you've viewing from.

I posted in the artist alley thread but I guess it couldn't hurt to ask here :

"Should not have put off any planning for ALA artist alley at all.

I usually buy my fiberfill stuffing for my animals and dolls off amazon for $17-20 for a 5lb box but now they don't have it anymore. ;_;

I normally use a combination of the fairfield fiberfill for the smaller areas that are hard to stuff and morning glory for everywhere else. It turns out great but now I have no more morning glory and I think Walmart may no longer sell the 50 oz bags of Fairfields fiberfill for $9.

You guys wouldn't happen to know of any websites I can order off of would you?"

In return you can have this shitty shitty tutorial I made for a tiger and bunny doll I made a while ago.

probably something along those lines, I think I'd test it before hand to make sure the lights are bright enough to be seen trough the fabric. Also a possible velcro back or bottom so you can change the batteries.

Pros and cons of moveable arms for plushies?

>> No.6480929

You can pose it, making it more interesting depending on the original shape.

Of course, you have to worry about attaching the joints symmetrically, and they can behave oddly if too small or big.

I've heard people using attachable eyes as doll joints, but have yet to try it myself.

Hey I'm >>6467294 and I tried to follow on some of the advice I was given (thanks anon!!) but I'm stuck. Tried to do the masking tape/newspaper method but now I have no idea how to make a pattern from my 3d shape.

Pic related :( I've no idea how to do the lower half of the face. Any tips/tutorials on how to make patterns from 3d shapes?

>> No.6484633

>>6484604
I think with the masking tape/newspaper something method, you're supposed to draw lines of where you'd like the stitches to be, and cut along those lines. You'll end up with pieces that are not completely flat, so you start to cut straight into the parts till it spreads out like a dart. It's... pretty tricky to explain...

Here's another way you can try to get around your piece. Don't forget to include where the ears should go on your head.

I've never seen a separate pattern of this. Just use the one in the second row on the right-hand side as a guide. You have to enlarge it and trace it, or take extra steps to got to Photoshop and make clearer patterns based off the image.

It's only a couple of bucks, I might consider getting one from the shop next order

When I make my cubes I don't usually have 3d hair or the feet/hands, but really you jsut have to kind of poke at the seams from the inside if that makes sense? It makes them less rounded and actually, well, cube-like. You might still get some at the corners, but it looks cleaner than just sewing everything from the outside.

I'm not doing so well at describing this, but I hope that made some semblance of sense!

I've been trying to find a pattern for a semi-realistic bear plush. I mean to make a Shirokuma plush as a Christmas gift, but it's hard finding one that's both mildly realistic as well as upright (pic related.) Any idea what kind of patterns I should use, or should I just draft one myself?
>if a polar bear is impossible, I could try Panda as a last option, so patterns for either of them are awesome.
