Be careful when you crank the contrast and saturation. Contrast and saturation are kinda the easy way to make a photo look a lot better quickly, but it's also really common to overdo them. I don't mind the deep blacks in the ivy, but look at her hair. In the original, there's quite a bit of detail all throughout, but in the shopped version there are lots of chunks that have ended up as formless splotches of neon red. This is exacerbated by the fact that, due to the largely green tones and over-saturated colors, the hair is where your eye is most drawn in the photo.

Overall I like your choice to keep things simple! Since you're working with small changes, keeping an eye out for the details will really make your shops jump from good to great.

A couple tips for you guys I picked up while I was borrowing a Lynda.com subscription.

High-pass filter is in fact NOT useless. Make a copy of the main picture, apply high-pass (you usually don't need to go higher than 1.0), and then set the Blending Mode to Overlay. Shit sharpens like a pro. Use a mask to then keep it only on hair, eyes, eyebrows, lips and sometimes the nose.

Gaussian blur can be used in an incredible way for a healthy amount of contrast in the skin. Set your layer to a Smart Layer and then apply a Gaussian Blur. In your Layers panel, double click the lines next to the actual word Gaussian Blur, and you'll see a menu that isn't where you change the strength of the blur, but it's blending mode. Change it to the blending mode of your choosing (some work better than others in different situations), and voila, a healthy way to add life and contrast to your entire picture. Adjust strength with opacity or masks.

I'll post more tips (ask questions, if you'd like) if you want. A little sleep atm, so I might just continue in the morning (1:42 AM where I'm at).
