Considering conventions are really the only few spots where freaks, weirdos, geeks, and outcasts can hang out in and enjoy themselves, I doubt it. And it just seems to me no gunman has ever -not- fit the bill of any of those things.
Therefore, why would they?
It would be like a comic book nerd blowing up the only comic bookstore in town.
No benefit for him, oh and he spends the rest of his life either living in fear of being caught, being in jail, or dead.

if you really wanted to make a mass casualty event a convention is a great place. tightly packed areas, zero security. you could drop shit into garbage cans or just leave bags all over the place and blow up as much shit as you wanted. go to a panel room, put your stuff down, say you're going to the bathroom. if you're in costume, no one can really see what you look like. there's no cameras in bathrooms (privacy and all) so you could take off your mask/costume and stash it and just walk out.

A coward would, yes. Especially someone who would question his ability to carry out such an act and risk getting caught. Not every criminal is crazy. Some of them are rational killers that just want to see some people get hurt either for their own amusement or for some motive.

I thought about it during a previous thread where attacks were brought up. It was probably the batman shooting since that was kind of similar for an event.

Not like guerrilla bombings haven't been done before. There's a lot of ways to do things. I'm surprised there weren't multiple explosions set up with a delay to kill the first responders which is a classic tactic.

What's surprising about this? Lots of places and events have tons of people in once place and lax security.
Could it happen? Yes.
Has it happened? No.
I mean it's pretty straightforward, anything else is just speculation. It could happen anywhere.

oh and speaking of batman, movie theaters are very vulnerable. it's dark as fuck inside so detecting the bombs in a theater is hard, there's zero security. the only limiter is the size of the bombs and that you'd probably have to rig something flexible so you could hide it amongst your clothes while still making it big enough to do damage if you were going for taking out a large chunk of the theater. although to be honest i've come from school with my backpack and they took a quick look inside that wasn't very strict. sports events too. i know the local ballpark allows you to bring in softsided coolers, camera bags, backpacks, and while they do check inside they aren't very thorough.

Nobody actually gives enough of a shit about cons for one to be a plausible target unless it's one of the highly publicized cons like SDCC or something. Back on topic, I'm honestly not going to AB this year just because of what happened at the marathon. It might just be me, but for a few weeks after something like this I just get so jumpy. >Considering conventions are really the only few spots where freaks, weirdos, geeks, and outcasts can hang out in and enjoy themselves, I doubt it.

Pretty much this. Cons have a very varied and very accepting crowds that are united by thier not-so-common interests.
Forming groups to shit on eachother is part of american school culture and the less conformist you are the more people will shit on you. On the other hand the range of fetishes people are open about at conventions is so broad that it's hard NOT to find people like yourself.

At the same time I know a few people who use anime/games/cosplay as an escape from some pretty grim shit at home/school and the hobby and community is what kept them sane through it all. Not having anyone at all to turn to is what pushes people over the edge, either into suicide or homicide.

Conventions are basically gigantic group therapy sessions.

Not really.

Why would they target a convention about comic books, anime or any sort of pop culture?

Most of these people are freaks or considered low lives, most mass murders want to target families, respectible citizens that are more bland to the harsh realities of the world or of their agenda or pain.

Fact is, cons really don't have anything of value to the political world and since cons are known for creeps and weridos no one would really be that surprised hearing that some crazy was trying to shoot a bunch of other weirdos in pony costumes.

>> No.6777081

If you just want to kill or injure, a convention is a great target. Packed with people (oftentimes in very close quarters), low security, easy access. If you really wanted to you could kill and injure hundreds of people easily with a few devices set up. It's even got lots of kids if you really want to tug on people's heartstrings. "Please, someone, think of our nerdy children! They didn't do no wrong to no one!" If you remember what a couple of classrooms' worth of kids did for emotional appeals, how would hundreds fare? Just thinking about AX and SDCC there are tons of vulnerable places that are going to be wall to wall with attendees.

You don't need political value if you're just out to kill people.
